I was fortunate to have my beautiful wife surprise me with an early birthday stay here in Downtown Middleburg at The Red Fox Inn.

From the moment you walk in, the warm lighting and calm, elegant setting create a true retreat feeling--relaxing, intimate, and perfectly set up for an unforgettable dinner. We started with the baked brie, and it was the perfect opener. Warm, creamy, and beautifully rich, it had that comforting, indulgent feel without being too heavy. It was the kind of appetizer that makes you pause after the first bite and think, "Okay, this is going to be special." We also shared a salad that was far better than any "starter salad" has a right to be. The greens were crisp and fresh, but the real surprise was the croutons--light, buttery, and so tender they practically melted in your mouth. Every bite felt balanced, simple in the best way, and clearly made with care. For the main course, we ordered the chicken under brick and the scallops risotto, and both were genuinely memorable. The chicken under brick had a beautifully crisp exterior, with juicy, tender meat underneath--full of flavor and cooked exactly right. The scallops were seared perfectly, with that delicate golden crust and soft, buttery center. Paired with the creamy risotto, it felt luxurious and comforting at the same time. It was the kind of dish you keep talking about afterward because it is that good. Dessert somehow raised the bar even more. The chocolate tart was rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying--pure indulgence. The fruit tart was fresh, bright, and perfectly balanced, with a delicate crust and vibrant flavors that made it feel light and refreshing after such an incredible meal. Both desserts were truly delicious and the perfect ending. The service matched the food and atmosphere: welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. Every interaction made the night feel even more special, and it never felt rushed--just warm and thoughtful from start to finish. And a special mention to our waitress, Rae--the most pleasant, kind, accommodating, and positive soul you can find. Her smiling welcome immediately put us at ease and made us feel so happy to be there. She truly elevated the entire experience. If I can give this place seven stars, I would!

The parking was easy to access and real close to the venue. The ceremony was nice, but the chairs were very close together and they didn't put any extra chairs out. They only had enough chairs for the number of people who attended. (I didn't appreciate this during COVID.) Furthermore, some people's view was blocked by pillars. This continued into the reception. We couldn't see some of the dancing and speeches because of the pillars. The Barn has one big room that is separated into by a partition for cocktail hour. I was surprised that all 100+ people easily fit in this smaller area. Part of the reason it worked was because they have a nice little loft where some people went for cocktail hour. As for the acoustics, I give this place 5 out of 5 stars. Granted it has a lot to do with the quality of the DJ's speakers, but it has good acoustics. The aesthetics of The Barn were okay. I feel like they were confused as to what they wanted to do when designing the space. They have 2 beautiful chandeliers that would be a perfect fit in a ball room, but don't work with the wood features. The last thing that I found a little distasteful was that you could see the tables that were going to be used for the reception during the ceremony.

The views alone are worth the trip. Rolling hills, open skies, and quiet moments that make you forget the pace of DC entirely. What made the experience unforgettable for me was exploring the grounds. The stables are absolutely beautiful, and getting to visit the horses added such a special, personal touch. And yes... I have to mention Cupcake --the sweetest pony who completely stole the show. The fire pits were another highlight. There's something about sitting by the fire, taking in the scenery, and just being present that felt grounding in the best way. It's the kind of place where time stretches a little longer and everything feels a bit softer. Whether you're going for a day trip or a full stay, this is luxury that feels warm, not distant--elevated, but still deeply welcoming. A perfect reminder that sometimes you don't have to go far to truly get away.

The high ceilings and architecture is lovely. I think one of my favorite areas was the dining area for breakfast. There are other gorgeous rooms to lounge in as well. The library is so rich with the dark wood. I loved that you can borrow/leave books! Our room had classic elegance. We had two queen beds and a balcony. If you're curious about pricing a little over $800 per night and that's in the off season. So be prepared to spend some money-- for a night or two, it's a fabulous experience. We had incredible service from the moment we walked up to the front door. The gentleman at the desk answered all our questions and told us about the car service that takes you to various place which is included in your stay, some were wineries and some were restaurants in town. We had marvelous service by Cayden while at the bar/restaurant. So gracious and so apologetic! We knew it was busy in there, but he made sure we were attended to! We spoiled ourselves with breakfast (my favorite space). The food was marvelous. We loved the pancakes and salmon platter. We split everything! Yet again, service was wonderful there too. The spa was gorgeous and incredibly relaxing for the mind body and soul! My friend took advantage of spa amenities. I think my favorite thing to do was sit on the heated stone lounge chair. The treatment room was beautiful. The massage chair could also be positioned in more of an upright position as well. Derek had some magical hands which helped ease a lot of tension I was carrying. He was also wonderful about checking in about pressure too. Some areas of my body can take more than others, he adjusted well to my needs. This is definitely a place to look at if you're up for spending some money. Your experience will be amazing!

Once I spoke with Jennifer she told me she does parties of all sizes. She told me that she once even planned a Thanksgiving dinner for a family. I started my planning with Jennifer about 4-6 weeks ahead of time and she was full of good ideas. We settled into the idea of a winery birthday for my boyfriend. She planned everything for me and the extra details of personalized napkins and wild flowers on the tables really made the party spectacular. First of all, I'll never have a party without consulting a planner again. They actually save you money in the long run by knowing where to purchase things at the best price. And secondly she is able to make the party unique by finding just the right location. For example I was going to have everyone meet at Bear Chase Brewery for the birthday and have a few beers. But Jennifer found a beautiful manner house at Greenhill Winery. The location was breathtakingly beautiful. (See pictures). Anyhow, the party was a huge success. Everyone had a lovely time and most of all-a memorable milestone event for my boyfriend's birthday. Jennifer Rooney comes highly recommended by me. We started at Greenhill Vineyard (still one of my absolute favorites), then had a phenomenal brunch at Salamander Middleburg, and wrapped everything up at Cana. And honestly? Ending here was the right choice. The views are stunning, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the wine made it easy to fully settle in and unwind. There's a relaxed elegance to Cana--it doesn't try too hard, but still delivers a really elevated experience. After a full day of good food, great wine, and even better company, this was exactly the reset we needed. It felt like luxury, but approachable. Intentional, but effortless. Simple questions about the wines were met with "I don't know, ask someone else," which took away from the experience. Later, family and friends joined us, bringing the group to around 14 people. Everyone continued purchasing wine, drinks, and food throughout the visit, but the manager told us we needed to move outside despite many open tables being available. We offered to split into smaller groups, but the situation quickly became confrontational and included threats to remove us from the property. Had there been policies for larger groups or additional fees, we would have completely understood if they had been communicated upfront. Instead, the interaction felt unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming. Beautiful property, but unfortunately the hospitality did not match the setting.

I must say, huge compliments to the wine maker who is trying something different and new with bold and delicate flavors. The remodeled horse stable presents a beautiful ambiance with a fireplace and windows all around to absorb the views.
