Today I went in for a broken crown that was covering an implant I had done 10 years ago. Unfortunately the crown broke and he was able to offer me a great consultation and referral to the best Implant Dentist in the county to have the post removed so he can make a new crown with his great in house technology. By doing this it saves extra cost and time having an outside service do the crown that can often take many weeks. I would recommend Dr Joe Nguyen to anyone looking for professional honest Dentist!! I have NEVER been treated to feel so small, worthless, and bullied in a professional healthcare setting as I was today. I have been with this dentist office for about 20 years. My family has all gone here. Things weren't perfect but what really is. However the last couple years have been far from perfect and not even okay. Today was unacceptable. I was shamed, embarrassed, and frankly judged for my oral health and my financial hardships and not for the first time. When I would asked in the past what can I do at home daily to help keep things healthy in between my cleanings I was told "nothing". Again today I was told the same. I can do nothing at home to help. All I can do is an antibiotic laser cleaning (that my insurance will not cover) and when I decline I am then told that I will start to lose teeth if I don't do these cleanings, and at one appointment was told (because I'm an older women) you're probably in perimenopause and that is extremely hard on your gums and these cleanings are the only thing that will help you keep your teeth. It feels very much like they only care about the money. Like they get a commission for performing certain procedures and if you decline those procedures they don't get their bonus. They say it's about prevention but don't want to suggest things that can be done at home on a regular basis with regular cleanings to help keep things moving in a positive direction. Expensive every two month dental treatments are the only thing that can help me??? And when I was crying (yes I cried) in the chair because I felt so shamed. The dentist then had the audacity to tell me that maybe I should be saving money for these appointments and then proceeded to aggressively call out the rise in cost if I keep making excuses for not doing the treatments they are "suggesting". Today it felt very much like a demand. Not a suggestion. Needless to say I didn't get my cleaning. I will NEVER go back to that office. It was truly the worst experience I have ever had and frankly I'm humiliated. Please if you care about yourself you will do the extra work and find a dentist that actually cares about you.

I've suffered from TMJ/TMD for most of my adult life to the point where neck, shoulder and back…read moretension, tension headaches, jaw pain and tooth sensitivity were an everyday occurrence. Over the years I sought care from acupuncturist, chiropractors, massage therapists, dentists and TMJ/TMD specialists. A variety of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions (IM injections of muscle relaxants, oral muscle relaxers, antidepressants, ECT treatments, exercise, meditation, mindfulness) only provided temporary relief. Additionally, I wore through THREE different "night guards." One of which was an "at-home DIY" guard and the last two were professionally cast by dentists. A year ago I visited a dentist who sent me off with a night guard and a prescription for antidepressants. I was so confused about the relevance of the medication and was not sure how they were related to the TMJ/TMD. In about two months, the night guard was warped and all of the associated symptoms of muscle tension and headaches returned. After searching for a TMJ/TMD specialist in San Diego I came across Dr Cook. The treatment plan was extensive, detailed and meticulous. Dr Cook didn't just cast a piece of plastic and send me on my way a week later. There was an initial consultation, fees discussed, a sleep study (because for the first time Dr Cook explained that the anatomy of my airway and my sleep quality contributed to the grinding/clenching), imaging, in-office electromyogram (to measure muscle contractions at rest and while clenched) and dental work to correct the bite so that an orthodic could be made. Dr Cook was the first dentist to tie together sleep quality, anatomy and pathology and actually EXPLAIN how they contribute to TMJ/TMD. The road to recovery was long and Dr Cook and her staff were professional, courteous and accommodating the entire time. She was so meticulous that she made adjustments down to the very millimeter- and for someone who'd tried everything to no avail for years, I was relieved by her level of dedication. Thank you Dr Cook, Dawn, Maria and all of the staff. Since having the orthodic my sleep has improved, my energy level during the day is better, I'm not wearing my teeth down and I feel so much better!
