I've suffered from TMJ/TMD for most of my adult life to the point where neck, shoulder and back tension, tension headaches, jaw pain and tooth sensitivity were an everyday occurrence. Over the years I sought care from acupuncturist, chiropractors, massage therapists, dentists and TMJ/TMD specialists. A variety of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions (IM injections of muscle relaxants, oral muscle relaxers, antidepressants, ECT treatments, exercise, meditation, mindfulness) only provided temporary relief. Additionally, I wore through THREE different "night guards." One of which was an "at-home DIY" guard and the last two were professionally cast by dentists. A year ago I visited a dentist who sent me off with a night guard and a prescription for antidepressants. I was so confused about the relevance of the medication and was not sure how they were related to the TMJ/TMD. In about two months, the night guard was warped and all of the associated symptoms of muscle tension and headaches returned. After searching for a TMJ/TMD specialist in San Diego I came across Dr Cook. The treatment plan was extensive, detailed and meticulous. Dr Cook didn't just cast a piece of plastic and send me on my way a week later. There was an initial consultation, fees discussed, a sleep study (because for the first time Dr Cook explained that the anatomy of my airway and my sleep quality contributed to the grinding/clenching), imaging, in-office electromyogram (to measure muscle contractions at rest and while clenched) and dental work to correct the bite so that an orthodic could be made. Dr Cook was the first dentist to tie together sleep quality, anatomy and pathology and actually EXPLAIN how they contribute to TMJ/TMD. The road to recovery was long and Dr Cook and her staff were professional, courteous and accommodating the entire time. She was so meticulous that she made adjustments down to the very millimeter- and for someone who'd tried everything to no avail for years, I was relieved by her level of dedication. Unfortunately, after 12 years with Dr Cook I have switched dentists. The new office staff is difficult to work with, emailing incorrect appointment dates/times, inflexible with fees for family emergencies (first missed appointment in 12 years!), and staff is generally unfriendly. Office manager did not seem bothered to be losing patients. The new location isn't great, building is old and parking lot is very small with no turnaround. No issues with Dr Cook but lots of choices for great dentists in San Diego with professional office staff! read more

Nicol was my previous Dentist, and without even advising me the entire office moved (she joined another dentist) and didn't even advise me. I drove to the old crappy location with the scary driveway to find a letter on the door advising of their new location, This is after she advised & pushed me to get a bunch of crowns, (I'm guessing the rush was so she can semi-retire & move. Dr. Cook has been our family dentist for just over a year when we relocated back to our home state. We've been pleased with her and the staff... friendly, accommodating, professional, excellent care. Do ask if you don't understand a procedure or why it's needed; sometimes professionals are so used to their field that they may forget we're novices- the patients. It's nice to receive gifts-an electronic tooth brush or water pic for referrals to other patients; even those within the same family. Ive had several cleanings-including the "deep cleaning" to start off well and a Night Guard made for my TMJ.My family has had a few fillings and cleanings as well. The splint Dr. Cook made to relieve my TMJ placed my jaw way off center of the condyle in an abnormal position. I was told I would get used to it and faithfully wore the splint for several weeks. Dr. Cook would "adjust my bite" by drilling down molars on one side of my jaw. Things did not seem right. My bite was now way off with no occlusion, My questions were going unanswered, there was no treatment plan or overview presented. When I requested to see the x rays of my jaw, my request was refused and I was told that if I didn't comply, my jaws would get worse. When I requested to get a full copy of all x rays, I was told my computer was not compatible with her software and it was not possible. Many of my questions went unanswered. I called McCormack, the imaging company and they instantly sent me via computer all pictures as well as a disc. Upon seeing the alignment of my jaw without splint as centered in the condyle and with splint hugely displacing jaw to rear of condyle, I knew irreversible damage had been done by drilling my molars to accommodate the misaligning splint. Though not a jaw expert, even I could tell the images were not right, reaffirming what my body was telling me. I'm pretty sure I was one of the first of Dr. Cook's clients in this new service. Both the receptionist and her assistant reported they had just done this training and had all worn a splint. When I asked the assistant what the final cost of treatment was, which I now intuited was to rebuild my entire mouth, she replied, "Like the cost of a new car!" I had spent over $6,000 for major damage to my molars and bite. Seeking remediation, I sought the assistance of a well known TMJ specialist and dentist. Upon showing him the X-rays and explaining Dr. Cook's approach, he was shocked and reported the jaw placement in the condyle was the worst he'd ever seen produced by a neuromuscular dentist. He sent me to his dentist for restorations and I spent over $7,000 to get back my occlusion. It took over a year to slowly rebuild and adjust the bite to be fully functional and comfortable. Needless to say, I would strongly suggest staying away from Dr. Cook. If I could have given minus score, I would have. Beware! read more

I have been going to my other dentist (will not be named) for a few years now and I was becoming more and more unhappy with them. Recently I went to them for a filling and was met with excruciating pain from it for weeks. They then proceeded to tell me that I had cracked an unrelated tooth and would need to pay for a crown. I had been searching for months and months throughout San Diego County for a dental office that made me not hate myself the whole time I was there. Far from that - and this is coming from someone who grew up a complete denti-phobe - I'm not just entirely comfortable when I'm there, but I look forward to it! It's a small, personal office. The staff is very friendly, personable and always upbeat. If you're bothered by noise (e.g dental tools), they have headphones you can wear while you're being worked on and shaded glasses so you don't have light glaring in your eyes.
