This was timed right, though, because the Wifey, Daughter, and SIL all went to daub losing bingo cards at the casino for 4 hours, and Daaaaaddy could curl up with warm blankets in the chilly RV while they did so. I just had the best burger ever at the Gateway Cafe, in little old Plummer, Idaho! I ordered the Gateway double patty burger and it was beyond delicious. 1.2.24: Recently moved to Idaho and this is the only restaurant in the closest town to me. This evening was my first time in for dinner. I ordered the soup of the day, which was broccoli cheddar, large shrimp basket, and the taco salad. The soup was good and had a decent amount of vegetables. The shrimp came out hot freshly out the fryer. The cocktail sauce was the best as it had a horseradish spice to it. The taco salad was really good and all the ingredients were fresh and crisp. The shell was freshly fried and had a great soft crunch to it. For dessert, I got the apple huckleberry pie. I've never had it before and it was pretty yummy. Our server was attentive and friendly and the ambience was quiet for dinner time. I was surprised how big the menu was and living so close, I'll be trying other things in the future. read more

Good food, surly service. WE stopped in for breakfast, mid-morning, on a Friday. The place wasn't crowded. We ordered our meal. My wife asked for ice water with lemon, and that seemed to torque the waitress. She was very curt after that. I don't know if that marked us as city folk or just what. Regardless the breakfast was great so we just let it ride. Tipped the obligatory 20% and were on our way. read more

This is a warm and inviting place to eat with an uncomplicated menu of classic favorites with nice local touches (like huckleberry topping on waffles and pancakes). Gateway gets only 2 stars this time. Have been a customer for several years. The last 4 visits have been totally unacceptable. The hashbrowns came drenched in oil when I have specially asked each time for no additional oil and butter for dietary reasons. The German sausage, was fine on top, flip it over it was burned to black charcoal. This is plain laziness, inattention, or just a bad cook. Cmon, wake up, the breakfast here 'used to be good,' but now I'm thinking of passing by and going straight to CDA rather than complain to a cook. first of all, this review is not a reflection of the servers or the aesthetics of the restaurant. This is solely about the food, sat down for lunch with my family of 4. two of us ordered the chicken fried steak. Being very hungry they tried to eat but we all noticed the "chicken fried steak" is actually ground beef with breading and pan fried, there was no flavor and sooooo much grease. The mashed potatoes were cold and flavorless, the other meal ordered was the reuben, this sandwich was disgusting and soggy and the "corned beef" was microwaved lunch meat. We were all very hungry so we tried our best to eat, but asked to level with them and pay for all but one of the chicken fried steaks, the waitress assured us that the chicken fried steak was not ground beef but ground chicken. Yikes....?! We reluctantly paid to do the right thing after the server called her owner and they told her she is not authorized to make any of those managerial calls. We will be going through our bank and disputing the charge. If my food tasted like theirs I would be making it right with the customer and offering my apologies. read more

The good: friendly service, patriotic atmosphere, multiple options of fry selection- tots, crinkle cut, or freshly cut shoestring, the house fry sauce is better than most places, the brown gravy absolutely delicious, the pies and their crusts YUM! Also the buns for the burgers were nice and moist. The bad: the gravy was so good we were wishing there was just a little more on the plate! The ice cream for the pie a la mode wasn't very creamy. Worth the drive from the nearby casino in Worley, ID! Great interior with wood tables, old farm equipment mounted on the walls, exposed industrial heating pipes and acoustic dampeners. Friendly and competent wait staff and great drip coffee in nice big mugs. We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning and my husband adored his meal (chicken-fried steak with sausage gravy, eggs over easy, bacon and hash browns). Generous portions! I had French toast with a side of hash browns, which was pretty solid but the hash browns definitely weren't as crispy as I like- so next time, I will order them extra crispy. I'm not sure if the location of this place is right on the accompanying map, but just drive through Plummer on 95 and you can't miss it. I stopped in for a big breakfast on my way up to Sandpoint to kayak for the day, and I was not disappointed. Though they have many "specials" for the smaller appetites of the older patrons that seem to frequent the stop, they know how to serve a large plate when one is ordered. I forget the name of the dish, but it was a base of hashbrowns fried up with ham, onion and peppers with some fried eggs on top. It wasn't anything special, but boy did it really hit the spot. It came with a side of pancakes, like any good breakfast does. They were very, very fluffy and large. I don't know if they just use a pancake mix or what, but they really know how to cook them so that they fluff up properly. I'm betting that my waitress was the owner and the cook was her husband, but I'm not sure on that. Either way, it's obviously a Mom and Pop joint that stays afloat by the local business. My only complaint is that the coffee kind of sucked. Other than that, I stuffed myself for less than $10 on a solid, country breakfast. I will likely return. read more

This place is basically the only descent restaurant between Cour D lean and Lewiston ID. The inside is very clean. The menu had a variety. My son who is 7 and I ordered a steak. It was somewhat visually disappointing as it looked like a slab of gray meat. No grill marks, and it was kind of thin. Our waitress who was young didn't seem to be interested in refilling drinks or taking care of our table. We did order a desert Sunday chocolate chip cookie which everyone devoured. read more

For a small, Mom n Pop restaurant, the food is pretty good. They keep the prices reasonable and will alter menu items for you if you have allergies, intolerance, etc. If you order gravy, make sure you tell them to go easy.
