What a wonderful way to learn about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the issues they're tackling. Everyone working there was so friendly and welcoming. The exhibits are interactive and fun for both adults and children. I attended one of their scheduled talks on the toilets and it was eye opening to learn about the issue and also the prototypes that have been built. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area! Small visitor center that is free and open to the public. It is staffed by very knowledgeable personnel (take the tour) and offers interesting insight into the history and efforts of the foundation. It is interesting to see what causes they have chosen to focus on, and the strides that they've been able to make. There is some debate as to whether a private citizen should be dictating global policy, but there's a lot worse things that the Gates could be doing with all their money. I had a good visit to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Discovery Center. I visited on a Saturday early afternoon to catch the 2 PM tour. It was very cool to see the impact the foundation had on communities around the world and projects they were working on. For example the dangerous mosquitos problem in Africa. One of my favorite displays was the toilet in the back that only flushed when the lid was closed (amazing - I need one for my guests haha). I was also there when they had the "Designing Motherhood" exhibit, which I also found really interesting. They had this pregnancy detector for blind people on display. So cool. I'd highly recommend this exhibit to everyone. I think the tour was pretty Informative. There was only one other person on the tour with me. I think it was around 50 min long. The tour guide kind of highlights big things in the center and answers whatever questions you have. The center itself is not that big (I think around 3-4 rooms including the theater and a hallway of exhibitions), so it took me maybe about 1 hour to finish wandering on my own after the tour and I'm someone who enjoys reading everything and trying the exhibits. The parking garage on the website is really close to the discovery center. However, it is actually quite pricey (something like $20 if I remember correctly). If you're visiting on the weekend, I'd highly recommend parking at the Spheres and walking over. I'd recommend a stop by this discovery center for anyone. I thought the tour was worth checking out. The projects were pretty eye-opening in terms of scale of problem and what cool solutions currently exist out there. read more

Thanks to Yelp for telling us about this place. It's neat to go to a free museum (though we ended up paying $6 for parking). I'm glad there are people in this world who use their wealth to make a difference in the world. And instead of just boasting about all that they do, this museum was geared to inspiring visitors to think of ways they could make changes in the world. There were many activities in which visitors were encouraged to brainstorm ways to help those in need, make changes, etc. I would have loved to bring students here on a field trip because I can imagine elementary school students finding this fascinating (if they can read all the displays). They even have a section where you can make a fleece blanket for an animal shelter. If we had more time, I would have totally done that. We didn't take the tour though we were there around the 2pm tour time. Kinda glad we didn't because previous reviews had mentioned it not being worth the time. And when we walked by, I wasn't sure I could listen to the tour guide the entire time. If you're in the area, definitely check this place out. We had an event here last night and I was amazed with the space. All parts of the venue were accessible for guests with mobility aids and the exhibits were very creative and tactile. I liked that there were different options for seating. There were chairs and padded benches in the main space, and padded benches in the theatre which was mirroring the CART/live captions screen--great for folks that don't want to sit in the crowded area or want a closer view. For example, I get overheated easily, which makes me dizzy. The space was already feeling warm to me and crowds tend to add to the ambient temperature. My colleague is legally Blind. We decided to sit in the theatre and it was perfect for us since the screen was large/close enough so that she could actually read the captions and it was a comfortable temperature for me (and captions also help me understand what people are saying when I'm having brain fog). We were tabling and the venue staff were welcoming and and friendly during set up and clean up. They validated our parking since we were tabling. They even gave us thank you bags! I haven't opened mine yet but thought it was a nice gesture. We had to pack up and leave pretty quickly so I wasn't able to go through the exhibits but would definitely come back just to look through the space. I wasn't involved with coordinating the event or tabling but as a day-of participant, I was impressed by the venue and the service. The Seattle Center Garage is right next door. It's huge! It reminded me of an air hangar. I'd still be conscientious about parking if you're planning to drive since it appeared to get full pretty quickly. There were around five or so accessible parking spaces and some electric vehicle charging spaces too. To get to the venue, there are three stairs down or a ramp to the sidewalk. Life is about giving back and they have definitely done so. I really enjoyed reading about the contributions local individuals have made to Seattle. My boss and I were in the area for some meetings, so we opted to stop by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center and see what it was like. I was especially enticed after seeing the various sculptures on the sidewalk next to the Visitor Center, and I wanted to see more. The purpose of the Visitor Center is certainly to give folks a general idea of the work being done by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but also to make the efforts something that an individual can relate to, more easily understand, or see the impact of. There's a great attention to displaying the various exhibit portions in an eye-pleasing way, while also allowing for the video/sound components of exhibits to be appreciated - all without being too distracting to those viewing other portions of the space. The various portions of the Visitor Center also allow for a real creative, but streamlined, way to demonstrate the work being done by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. You feel inspired to consider how you as an individual can get more involved, and, for example, little topic cards placed all around the Visitor Center encourage you to volunteer, learn, use your voice, show kindness, donate, or raise money for your own causes. While we can't all contribute in the same way to bettering the world around us, that's truly a positive. Gorgeous visitor center. There are many stations that are informative and interactive to explain all of their worldwide projects for the greater good. I love their mission: To help the greater good. One of their projects that opened my eyes that I had no idea was a problem is the lack of toilets in third world countries. They are working on reinventing the toilet from better waste disposal and water usage to getting more to the people who need them. They focus on global health and review grant requests that flood in. A group of friends wanted to see this place, so I came along. But to my surprise it was very educational and enlightening. You are greeted when you first come in and told that there is a video presentation that shows every 10 mins or so and then you can go around at the different exhibits at your own pace. They happen to have the "Half the Sky" special exhibit featuring the work of women throughout the world. So many stories of women and their struggles and how people are helping to make a positive impact. I only skimmed most of the displays and did not read everything, but I did have time for some of the video stories featured. They are compelling and do inspire you to be part of the solutions. The last portion of the showcase was more interactive that allows you to take a brief quiz to find out what type of person you are and how you can contribute. They have cards where people brainstorm issues they care about and put them up. Overall I think it's a good place to go to see what the Foundation is doing to be part of making the world a better place, locally and globally. While it's small and only has a few rooms, the content is huge and the message inspiring. When I was eight, the song "Seattle" was etched into my brain in preparation for a gymnastics recital. Years later, I still think of that song every time I hear the name Seattle. The lyrics boast of the bluest skies and greenest grass, and even compare Seattle to a beautiful child, growing up free and wild, full of hopes, laughter, and dreams. That song was written long ago but it takes on a whole new meaning in the Seattle of 2015. If you are in Seattle for any length of time, you might notice the blue sky and the green grass among other things. You will probably notice the tall white Space Needle proudly reaching into the blue sky. It's hard to miss. If you look closely, you will probably notice that people sometimes sleep on the green grass below it when the temperature is an unseasonable 90 degrees Fahrenheit. That's hard to miss, also. You might even notice the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor's Center directly across the street from both the Space Needle and the people sleeping on the grass. It seems ironic. A structure built for people to see for miles on end. Another structure built to show work being done to help people in need around the world. And, a grassy area in between where you will see people who don't have a bed, let alone a room or home, to sleep in. However, the Gates Foundation is helping some of the more than 20,000 people who sleep in places not meant for human habitation in the state of Washington on any given night: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/What-We-Do/US-Program/Washington-State/Homelessness-and-Family-Stability. It's not a complete solution. The initiative focuses primarily on family homelessness. But, it's a start. And, it makes a difference to families facing homelessness including children who will hopefully grow up, as the song goes, full of hopes, laughter and dreams. And, not like the other lyrics in the song: full of fears and tears. Unfortunately, homelessness is not the only problem in the world. The Gates Foundation Visitor's Center highlights ways that human lives are improved or even saved by things like vaccinations in remote and impoverished areas, safe drinking water or toilets that don't require water and sewer lines or a power grid. One problem is finding real solutions. That requires people who care enough about others and think creatively enough to find solutions that aren't just temporary Band-Aids on a larger problem. The center does a wonderful job of encouraging people to find solutions and they offer to provide funding to implement those solutions. At the very least, the center raises awareness. Optimally, it can inspire people to think beyond themselves to make the world a better place and provide the resources to do so. Or, it can reveal some who have no interest in seeing lives improved, apart from their own. If that's you, then you can skip this free display of innovation and spend $20+ to visit the Space Needle where you can see Seattle for miles on end. I loved my visit to the BMGF Visitor Center! It was so interactive, educational and inspirational. The exhibits really educate you on what the Foundation does around the world. The statistics are great and educational. I loved the interactive activities to find out how I can personally help the community. The photo area was fun too, to see your face up on the visitor wall. Very cool. I took a lot of pictures during my visit because the decor was great and modern. I loved seeing the block quotes around the center, and reading the blocks with the years on them. When I flipped them, I felt like Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune because they turn automatically when you touch them. FUN! It was Saturday and the place looked close. However, the qoutes from the outside that we kept reading as we walked around the building were worth the walk. The architecture is wonderful. Seeing the exhibits at the Gates Foundation will give you an appreciation for the good fortune we enjoy. It will quickly inform you about people who struggle every day in other parts of the world. This place is very instructional. Videos and games helped visitors understand what the foundation is doing. It encourages each of us to learn about major problems in the world and then informs us as to how these problems are being dealt with by both large organizations as well as by individuals. I feel encouraged to try and make a difference in whatever small way that I can where ever I go. If you don't have time for the tour there are plenty of displays, videos and interactive kiosks to view. There is no charge for admission but you can make a donation if you choose. Desk staff were exceptional courteous. Public restrooms are available inside. Well worth taking time to visit. What an incredible legacy this family seeks to leave. read more

This place deserves more attention. Considering it's free to visit and only a quick walk from the Space Needle area, I really recommend a visit here to learn about the philanthropic contributions of Bill and Melinda Gates. The stories, innovations, and impacts presented at the exhibits are quite interesting and will make you feel a little bit better about humanity. Based on the exhibits and the level/depth of information presented, I would say that adults or maybe older teenagers would benefit from a visit, but when I visited, there was a group of elementary school age kids here (maybe in ~4/5/6th grade?) who seemed to mildly enjoy the place but obviously focused their attention on anything interactive such as the toilet challenge exhibit. read more

Lots of inspiring stories, cool inventions that helped change the world, some hands on stuff for the kids (and adults and teens) towards the back room (even for my 4 year old), and lots of questions and topics to get you really thinking how we can each make a difference! This visitor center can be summed up in one word: INSPIRATIONAL. I was in Seattle a few weeks ago and had very little time to explore the city in general, but I knew I had to make my way here to experience everything that the visitor center has to offer their visitors. The center is just a stones throw from the Seattle Center (Chihuly, Space Needle, etc), so the location is great for tourists and passersby alike! It's very beautifully designed, with walls of wood and glass. There are about 5-6 large rooms that you walk through each with a theme/overarching message and very unique and interactive displays/exhibits. I literally spent over 2 hours here interacting with everything because I wanted to get a grasp of what the foundation does and how I could help. The very last room is an interaction exhibit with many purposes. Here, you can create your advertising campaign, goals, and projects that you would initiate for a cause that you find important. Overall, I had a lovely experience and learned a lot of what the foundation is doing to better the world today. I am impressed and absolutely love this place. My review begins before I even arrived to the Gates Visitor Centre. I received an invitation to attend an event there so I emailed them to inquire about parking and accessibility. Since I use a cane more often than not, I need to check these things in advance so that I might make arrangements to lessen the stress of arrival. Connie Krause and Maria Reyna replied quickly and assuaged my fears. I received a PDF of the gallery guide to give me a sense of the Visitor Center's layout and even told me how far the closest garage was. The Gates Visitor Centre is located right across the street from Seattle Centre so if you are taking out-of-towners around the city, make this a definite stop on the sightseeing tour. All ages are welcome and there are plenty of interactive exhibits to keep everyone interested. I am proud to say that ALL exhibits and facilities are wheelchair accessible and meet ADA standards. The surfaces were clean and smooth, with wood and concrete throughout the Visitor Centre. The design was modern and unobtrusive, so you can focus on what the Gates Foundation is doing in the world from Seattle to South Africa. After I left, I felt educated and inspired to get involved. I highly recommend visiting either with a guided tour or just wander around on your own. read more

Well intentioned but grotesquely misleading, the Foundation should be able to put a more respectable face on the need to solve intractable problems with $37 billion in assets devoted to The Cause. Exhibits are stimulating for the uneducated, the simpletons, and the gullible amongst us, but fail to explain why the poverty and homelessness right outside the door are ignored in favor of feeding the overpopulated Indian subcontinent. Unfortunately, the issues are presented as though Mr. and Mrs. Gates are the great benefactors from above who are asking us all to put on our thinking caps and hold hands while we sing about buying the world a Coke. The whole experience is deeply depressing as one realizes the average visitor is being treated like a moronic child who will believe any tripe that is written on a chalk board (or computer monitor) by an elder. If you're in Seattle and you are in possession of your faculties, then enjoy a Seahawks game or the EMP Museum or even the Space Needle. You'll make some memories and help fight world problems the old fashioned way, through capitalism and democracy. read more

I am so, so, so glad I came here. And I'm going to keep coming! Bill Gates has always been one of my heroes, and this place is a wonderful reminder why. This center showcases all the philanthropic efforts of the Gates family in solving big problems, particularly in developing countries. The panels are all highly interactive - you can turn things around, press buttons to learn more, look at videos, pictures, touch and examine props from these places, it's great. My favourite panels included the ones about malaria research, helping out girls who were trafficked, and the best, about India becoming polio-free recently. How amazing is that! I had been feeling particularly bratty and disgruntled the day I came here, being fussy about something stupid. Looking at the exhibits made me quite emotional, as I remembered how *incredibly* privileged I am- despite being from India, one of the countries most highlighted on the panels, I personally never had to face even one of the problems described, thanks to my parents who shielded me from everything, and worked incredibly hard to enable to me to move to this country. Several million of my countrymen and women, however, are suffering, and I am so, so grateful to the Gates Foundation for their work. A very sobering experience, and a harsh reminder to honestly think about one's place in the world when feeling any negative emotion. read more

I first walked into the Foundation building, but was then told where the Discovery building was (the one with the revolving door!). Staff members were very friendly & welcoming. I came 30 minutes before the daily 2 o'clock tour, so I watched the introduction video & all other videos available in the entrance room and I'm glad I did--I think that was my favorite part of the center. At 2:00, I was part of a large tour group with staff member Romson. I have mixed feelings about the tour: some information was interesting, but most of it was not (& I could tell other visitors felt the same). Perhaps on a different day or with another worker, the tour would be more enjoyable. However, I would recommend going and reading the information available rather than taking the free tour. The center is not very big but there is plenty to do for an hour or so. Overall, a great experience. read more

I walked pass this visitor center on my way to the space needle, and I stopped in since I had time to kill. I was greeted by the door by a friendly worker who directed me to the front counter, so I could check in my coat to their storage bins. They offer free tours based on a daily schedule, but the whole exhibit area is open format where people can just walk around at their leisure. They not only have activities to read and watch, but they have activities such as making blankets that they donate to people in need. The whole experience you could spend at least a hour there, if not more. I would definitely stop in if you're around the area! It is a great way to learn about global issues and solutions that are being implemented! The parking situation is whatever parking you can find downtown, but it is close enough to the neighborhood areas, if you park for free there and don't mind walking ~15 minutes. read more

This was just incredible. The attention to detail, no matter how simple, was over the top. The surfaces were smooth, soft, and clean. Lots of wood, lots of concrete, and very all modern, hard lines. I appreciated that while to fixtures and the design were beautifully modern, they were also discreet and simple. The idea here is to focus on the details. Not the wall, not the floor, not the lighting... But the message. There are signs, walls, screens and posters everywhere. So, I never knew this visitor center existed before, but after taking one step through the doors, I can see how it could and should be an essential place to visit for both locals and tourists alike. Being located right across the street from Seattle Center makes it a must stop for anyone checking out all the sites in the area. The building itself is beautiful and looked like they had just opened the doors for the first time. I felt both educated and inspired having spent a short time here and I would hope everyone else who visits might come away feeling the same. If you're looking for a lot of physical exhibits this is not the right place for you. If you're looking for a place to be inspired and to get your mind thinking about what you can do to help, you've found the right place! Aside from a small display at the front showing a specially designed "toilet," the museum largely consists of text information and reading that text. True to Gates's roots, the information exhibits are designed beautifully with the use of technology. There are wooden panels on the wall that turn when you touch them to display the information behind them. There are sliding panels to show what the impact would be if we helped society in certain ways. There is even a display on the floor that can be manipulated by turning a globe. But my favorite parts by far were the interactive elements. There are several areas here that let you share your thoughts on certain topics (teaching, biotechnology, vaccines, etc.) and let you read submissions that other people have made. I liked these because they made me think about what goals we should be working towards and what I can do to make a difference. There is also a building station that lets you build a creation and take an image of it. Finally, there is an area where you can take a picture of yourself and attach a statement to it - putting your stamp on the Gates Foundation. I didn't leave with a great idea of what the Gates Foundation actually does, but I did leave feeling inspired to go out and do something! For the entry price of $0, I'll take it! It was a very serene environment and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the Seattle tourist scene. Come here and get inspired! read more

Located across the street from the Seattle Center, the visitor center gives visibility to the Gates' initiatives to solve major world problems. Their vision is to help improve people's lives through health and learning. Stop by to learn who they build partnerships with to bring together resources, expertise, and vision. All displays are well though out and some are interactive. Some prompt you to share your wish e.g. what do you wish to change in the world. Check out their theater schedule featuring how we can work together to effect change, issues facing women in developing countries today as well as new solutions. There is no fee to visit and tours are available on request. There are many staff members available to answer questions, which they do so with such passion. We are fortunate to have the Gates and everyone should take this opportunity to learn how they can contribute towards their future. read more
