A very knowledgeable and friendly gentlemen listen to our skill and comfort level and made us a route that would take us on a fun and scenic journey of the southern portion of the island. If you like being outdoors and are comfortable riding on sometimes hilly streets with very light vehicle traffic and courteous drivers, this is the place for you. We felt like we were riding through the forest with views of the bay. We enjoyed riding through the lovely neighborhoods as well. The bikes functioned well for us and are maintained. I like that this museum acknowledges various communities: LGBTQIA+, faith groups, and different cultures who lived on the island. Each got it's own spotlight. It also was fantastic about crediting locals who helped gather or supply information as well as trying to identify some of the people featured (e.g., in photos). There was a fun acrylic jigsaw puzzle of a map of Bainbridge in the main room that I put together. Overall, I think it's worth about 30-60 minutes of your time to swing by and learn about this island.

More than 120,000 Japanese individuals were forcibly moved from their homes and essentially imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II on the sole basis of their ethnicity. It is so meaningful to step in the same path as those who were removed and learn about their stories while reflecting on the Memorial Wall. It's a very solemn, yet beautiful place. I learned about the Japanese concentration camps when I was in high school, but I don't think the full extent of it really hit me until adulthood and I physically visited these places and imagined myself going through this. As I kid, I didn't really think that deep about what it would really be like to be uprooted. I hope more people will visit to learn about the unfair and unjust treatments of the Japanese people. We were met at their temporary visit center by a volunteer named Clay. He was so nice and gave us a brief history of the Japanese American exclusion experiences. We did not know that the Japanese Americans on Bainbridge Island were the first group to be taken from their homes. And they were only given 6 days to get their affairs in order. The memorial was very nice and there's a beautiful view of the bay at the end. How it most have been so hard to leave the beautiful island home.

The tour takes place in the Pioneer Square section and starts from a building that seriously looks underutilized. I'm sure it would make for a good restaurant or bar or speakeasy, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards for them at this point. When you come in to check in for your tour, you are shuffled into what was the bar and wait. When time comes you all head downstairs for a presentation. You are introduced to your tour guide. Keyon, I hope I spelt that right, was our tour guide. He was energetic and intriguing. Funny as all can be with a tinge of hatred for nearby Tacoma. He knew every little bit of information about the Underground Tour. It was an educational experience. I had no idea about the history of the young city. After going through the dirty history you understand why they raised up Seattle. And why when you are underground you are technically on the first or ground level. Understanding why they did this was a big portion of the tour. On a tidal basin and fighting sewage, you needed to raise up. While doing this, they had to raise the streets first and then build the sidewalks. You find out there were no deaths during the great fire, but during the raising up, you find out there were a few deaths as men that got drunk would fall off the ladders used to cross the street at the time. Then there are the purple pieces of sidewalk glass. This glass has manganese in it, which after making contact with sunlight, and some time, turned it a purple hue. The glass was used to bring sunlight to the underground. Most of the buildings that had their second floor become the first had an underground portion that ended up becoming mostly storage. This included what was once the sidewalks. You can also see a lot of where the first floor has settled being built on the tidal basin and all. You go up and down a few blocks, literally. Hearing more and more about the history of it all. Told a spooky story or two. See the tour guide play a trick or two. The best was the part where he turned off all the lights at one point to give it a bit more spook. Do it if you have the chance. It is another way to learn about a city and one few way to see a part of it legally.

I am always looking for low cost, less formal ways to learn about places I either live in or visit…read moreand have done many free tours both in Seattle and while traveling. I learned about this tour from a friend and I think it's fairly new. At any rate, interesting tour. Not your typical here's the city and these are some of the landmarks and here are some fun facts. The difference is this tour was focused around the public art that can be seen everyday along the streets and sidewalks, built into the infrastructure, in the form of manhole covers or hatches as they are referred to. The folks conducting the tour included information of the various artistic manhole covers, combining it with first hand information from the artists and discussed the history of the work and how it fits into the identity of Seattle. They also provide information on the history of the city and how Seattle became the city you see as you take the tour. Pretty neat concept exploring aspects of the city that folks often take for granted as they pass by. Another fun fact about this tour is that it evolved out of an art project. I thought that was particularly interesting. Some of the prints, etc are pretty cool and again not what you would typically expect or encounter from one of these free tours. I'd recommend this tour to anybody to who wants to learn more about the history of Seattle, who appreciates public art or art in general and who has a free hour or so on a Saturday morning.
