I was inspired to review the Father and Son fountain sculpture by Louise Bourgeois at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. This sculpture was commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum with funds from the estate of local philanthropist Stu Smailes, who left $1 million to the city with a stipulation that the money be used for a fountain featuring a nude male figure. It was interesting to learn about Stu Smailes and how the city eventually fulfilled his legacy through a commissioned sculpture - Father and Son by Louise Bourgeois.

This was unexpectedly one of my favorite tourist destinations around Seattle! It was quiet and peaceful on a Friday afternoon and the sculpture art was striking. It doesn't take more than 30 minutes to walk through with pausing to look at everything, so it's definitely worth checking out even if you don't have much time.

Olympic Sculpture Park is less a park, and more a waterfront trail with art sculptures along the path. By far the most captivating has to be the fountain, which switches heights, revealing another sculpture beneath the water. Sadly most of the other sculptures are a tad on the boring side, a bit too modern to evoke anything more than passing curiousity. With a bit more care to the plants or art style this park could be really gorgeous, but as it is, it's not too bad of a walk along the waterfront, and makes for a nice afternoon stroll.

The Olympic Sculpture Park is a great park to check out. The saddest thing is that you'll have to pay for parking if you want to get off a little closer. There is plenty of seating all around if you're tired and need to take a break, or if you want to have a picnic with friends and family. There aren't too many sculptures, but it is a nice walk.

Very nice park right by the water and it has some cultural activity center also. Lots of grass. Only issue nowhere to find any bathroom

Beautiful scenery along the shoreline of the puget sound. Full of life and laughter it's a great spot. The sculptures are unique and spread out over a large span of walking path. We walked the path and lime scootered back it's the best way to take in the scenery IMO. If you visit Seattle stop by you'll see some amazing sunsets and meet some wonderful people.

The stories behind these sculptures, were pretty awesome. A beautiful day for a stroll along the waterfront, I also was nicely surprised of the indoor, air conditioned area with restrooms and water fountains. A must see if you visit Seattle.

First time visiting Seattle and on my first day, I decided to walk from my hotel to the Waterfront then made my way towards Olympic Sculpture Park and I am so glad I did. The weather was gorgeous and I truly enjoyed the walk along the waterfront. I visited during an early afternoon and it was fairly quiet with some folks enjoying their lunch on the grass or chairs. This is truly a beautiful and free attraction that I highly recommend for first time visitors.

This is not a regular grassy park, but rather a park with gravel trails and interesting sculptures. The architecture is unique as the park is aboveground next to the sea. The sculptures are very quirky. I made a friend who told me this is his favourite park to walk his dog in.

This park is lovely. It has walking trails, seating, it's very clean, scenic, has great photo ops, & beautiful sculptures. I enjoyed coming here. I wish I would've had more time here to appreciate it.

Nice little park to walk through, with about a dozen outdoor sculptures and great views of the city.

Olympic Sculpture Park is right around the Seattle Center area making it an easy inclusion into a day out and/or a tour of the area. Walkable and enjoyable for a break with both indoor and outdoor parts. Described as a public park incorporating outdoor sculpture that may otherwise be seen in a museum that has pieces that could be a source of inspiration. The pieces all around the park are of modern and contemporary styles. Some are small and some are large with a monumental look. Because the park is sort of on a hill going down toward the piers area you can catch some very nice views of the water, the Olympic Mountains (on a clear day), as well as the Seattle skyline and port in general. Overall, Olympic Sculpture Park is a nice walkthrough area, it can be a place to relax take pictures and just as a way to make your way toward the pier. Why walk on a regular plain ol' sidewalk and when you can take a shortcut through Olympic Sculpture Park.

Why is this place not open at night when it's one of the only places to cross the train tracks... at night.

The first few halls were displaying artworks made out of glass. There were so many different sizes and shapes of colorful glass sculptures. It was so stunning, each photo seemed like a perfect shot for my phone's wallpaper. The hallway continues to a glass ceiling hall of the building with some more glass artwork. There was a cafe located in this area. Outside the building was a beautiful garden, with walkway all around. They were also doing a demo of making colorful vases from scratch using glass mold from furnace. On the other side was the entrance to the second building that had a theater playing a short movie about creating these glass art pieces. The exit was next to the theater that led to the gift shop. The gift shop was fascinating here. There were so products and artwork representing the glass sculptures inside the center. There were also many other souvenir items like stickers, magnets, apparels, cups, mugs, hats, books, stationery and so many more. We bought couple of magnets from here. Prices were decent. Staff members were really friendly here, both inside the exhibition and at the gift shop.

I believe each year the address for the market can change. This past year (2018) the address was at El Corazon. The Mourning Market is composed of dark themed... or Gothic styled merchandise that independent vendors and artists make and sell. This can include a variety of things from dolls, clothes, paintings, candy, cards, jewelry boxes, incense burners, necklaces and so much more! Many of the vendors do accept credit or debit cards but if there were any that did not there was an ATM at El Corazon where you could get cash. There is an entry fee to go to the market and the time we went it was only $2 which was very manageable. We bought several things here that we really enjoy! We got homemade chocolates from a vendor with a brilliant and refreshing mint flavor to it. I also got a bullet necklace where the bullet shell was carved in beautiful and elaborate designs. Steve got a David Bowie magnet which was awesome! The merchandise here is one of a kind and if it isn't then if there are duplicates of an item then it is very exclusive to that vendor or the market. In other words the likelihood of finding these items somewhere else are unlikely. Almost all of the vendors have their own business cards and I imagine you could place some orders for what they sell after the Mourning Market is held. The Mourning Market has about two dates out of the year as to when it is held. As I said location is bound to change year to year but it's definitely worth keeping track of. Their website is very straightforward and if you have the interest in becoming a vendor at the market there is even a link for that too at the website. The Mourning Market is a great way to support your local artists in the area!

Like it's still a work in progress with no guarantee of permanence. I want it to be so much more. I'd like to see this thrive and not just survive. It's a pastiche of ideas that doesn't seem to be fully realized. -There's a "figure drawing" area. That's only active with a live model once a month. Why? -Why is such a large space dedicated to making selfie's in front of a mirror? I like that it involves the public to participate but you could have a space for more art instead -The murderers row of paintings and sculpture is an uncurated hodgepodge of whatever fits on a wall, dysfunctional at best and crowded at worst. -The VR station, is sad low-poly jerkiness that you end up feeling bad that you disturbed someone from doomscrolling to run it for you -The Electronic Department could be so much more. Would it hurt to paint the area black to pull focus on the screens perhaps? -The place lacks ambiance. YET...the ambient noise from the HVAC System/Nudibranch Rodeo sculpture is so incessant that it becomes quite maddening before you get to the end of the presentation -The staff (at least two people we talked to) seemed to not know a lot about the space/events/activities UNSOLICITED IDEAS: *Run a regular life painting/drawing sessions with good lighting, several times a week. We could use more!!! *Have a 30-day artist in residence near the figure drawing session so people can see an artist at work through the windows and be drawn in *Put a lounge/coffee/station at the bottom floor near the escalators and gift shop to drive traffic and make a little money *Shrink up the self section expand wall space to hold more paintings/art that isn't so crowded *Paint the floors, finish them with purpose at least, you don't have to go full Meow Wolf but it'd tie the place together. *Invest in acoustic paneling or something to kill all that noise--would prefer some kind of ambient sound art over that *Spend less time marketing and more time creating a stronger schedule presence where people would really like to be and interact *Replace that storytelling campfire idea or whatever that is with something more useful, like a life-sized Electric Coffin sasquatch that people can take selfie's with. Maybe create like a wishing well of ideas that can be written and thrown in the firepit--currently it lacks the intimacy of a fire pit. Enclose that area, anything to cut it off from the bright lights and noise *Have once a month Maker's Mart upstairs near the dugout canoe area. Make it a lottery so that the same people aren't set up all the time to drive more traffic. Since it's a blocked off section you could charge a lower entry fee if at all *Curate Pop-Up art shows like flatstock, rock posters, pinstripers, soft sculpture, comic art, video game art, etc. *Hire a Creative Director to bring this place around and give it a presence PUTTING IT SUCCINCTLY: It's an embarrassment of space where I guess events happen and art is the backdrop. It could be so much more, a mainstay of the Seattle Art scene. There's really no need to go back as far as I can tell. =s=
