If the food itself weren't impressive (it is), I would still want to go in here for the atmosphere. The wood-fired stone leaves the places smelling amazing based on whatever they are using for the wood. Atmosphere is cozy in winter especially.

I have been eyeing Gasto Pub for quite some time; every time I pass by the parking lot seems full which is a good sign. Conveniently located with ample parking, the place is a vibe. The music sets the mood, and the slightly dim lights create the perfect ambiance to enjoy a nice meal. Opting for something different, I went for the Short Rib Grilled Cheese with a side of fries. The sandwich looked amazing when it was brought out, I couldn't wait to bite into it. Unfortunately, the garlic aioli overpowered it due to the excess amount on the sandwich. Despite the server's attempt to remedy the situation by offering an extra piece of toast, there was no saving the sandwich. I tried to salvage the meat, but it was too salty. However, once the server informed the Chef, he came right over and was so understanding. I explained what was going on and he apologized and offered to make me another dish. I declined as it was getting pretty late. The fries were good though. Despite the setback, the enticing menu offers tempt me to give them another chance. I would like to explore more dishes in the near future.

Found a hot spot in Waukee! We came out here on a Thursday night and it was packed!! We were able to get an outside table. If we didn't, it would have been a one hour wait for indoor seating. During COVID all patrons were unmasked. All Employees were masked. We were served by the manager of the store. He was great and took great care of us. Their patio area is a sweet spot once it's warmer. We ordered the Waygu burger, truffle fries, Buffalo chicken wantons, vegan brussel sprouts, and vegan burger. Two drinks. Total was. $71.xx before gratuity. Truffle fries are extra. I really appreciate the vegan options! So plant based eaters, vegans, and meat eaters have a great selection. I can't wait to get back out to Gastro when it's much warmer to enjoy the patio. We appreciated the service and the great food in our date night! Definitely recommend.

    Late night happy hour menu

Happy hour / late night happy hour situation was a bit confusing. I called before coming in to confirm that the late night happy hour includes food on the happy hour list. They said it does. We arrived and there's actually another menu (smaller) for late night happy hour. The bartender allowed us to order from the regular happy hour menu--which was nice. Also, the menu says late night happy hour Sunday: 7-9. Yelp shows they close at 8. Supposedly, they keep serving after they close. We ordered the fried Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, breaded & fried wings, and pork belly tostones. The fried Brussels sprouts were decent, nothing special--but, not bad. The first sip of the butternut squash was good but subsequent spoonfuls were too salty. We set the bowl aside because we were not in the mood for salt water today. The chicken underneath the breading was tasteless. The poutine also started out good until it became too salty to eat. Maybe smaller portions would be better. We ordered the bone marrow the last time and I would highly recommend this dish! It was delicious. I'll have to come back just for this dish.

Love this place! The french fries and garlic aioli are amazing and worth it alone, but the food is delicious and the atmosphere is good too!

We were driving through from Colorado back to Minnesota and did everything right: ordered online a full 30 minutes ahead so we could just swing in and pick up. We arrive, my sister (who also ordered ahead online) is already walking out with her food. My brother orders in-person right when we get there, and his sandwich--plus two other walk-in customers' orders--come out before ours even starts being made. We ended up waiting over another 30 minutes. More than an hour total from when we placed the order. What is the point of online ordering if the system doesn't hold your spot in line and just lets in-store orders and later arrivals jump ahead of you? It completely defeats the whole purpose. Still... those sandwiches really were exceptional. Almost worth the headache.

Ambience and customer service were just... there. Nothing offensive, nothing memorable. It's giving "get your order and go," which honestly works if the food's this good. If you're in it for the sandwich game, don't let the dry vibe throw you off -- the flavor makes up for the rest.

We were just here a few weeks ago and I am so bummed to see they permanently closed!! We came during lunch and took advantage of their weekday lunch combo (Tues-Fri, 11am-2pm), which includes soup and a half grilled cheese. You can choose from the OG, Kick in the Cheese, or Fancy grilled cheese, plus either tomato basil bisque or the soup of the day. Honestly? A dream setup. I ordered the tomato basil bisque with a half OG grilled cheese, and wow... just wow. The soup was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, and the grilled cheese delivered that classic, beautiful cheese pull moment you hope for (and rarely actually get). The cheese had the perfect amount of sharpness and subtle bitterness, balancing everything out so well without being overwhelming.. I seriously could go for one right now! Every bite was comforting and delicious, and I immediately wished I had ordered a full OG sandwich because it was that good. The combo was mouth‑watering, satisfying, and wildly exceeded expectations for a quick lunch stop.

I also enjoyed their homemade soup and their cookies.

Multiple tables, a record player area behind the barista setup, and a semi-open kitchen that makes it feel open and welcoming. SERVICE Our service was wonderful! Kennedy was extremely accommodating for our large group. DRINKS The cocktails lacked a bit for me: my gin fizz was just not it. Folks liked their Old Fashioneds, though. DINNER It sounds like they've just started dinner service, and are still working on getting the word out! With the name "luncheonette", that might be tricky - I'd recommend updating to "dinette". Some of the items on the menu felt more of a fit for lunch than dinner. I'd love to come back and try brunch here: it seems like that's where they shine most! FOOD I had the steak frites: the steak was cooked perfectly! The "frites" were amazing, but only three felt way too small a portion for the dinner plate. Some of the other plates were a touch sparse, like the chicken mole. The country ham byo-sandwich was one that didn't seem to translate well to dinner either. The wetburgers (called something different here) were great and so cheap - $5 a slider! The steak was the biggest hit for our group! I'd also love to see some homemade desserts for dinner. Presenting handpies and oatmeal cream pies in a plastic wrap just doesn't match the elevated vibe for dinner here. They put ice cream on them, but ran out so gave us snickers ice cream bars. I think to match the prices and ambiance, a level up is necessary here.
