My first night in Munich, starving after waking from a nap after about 20 hours of travel, I got on Yelp and found this spot and was so excited to come give it a try. High reviews, menu looked good, and it was about 15 minutes short walk from my hotel, Hilton Munich City. My mouth was watering as I walked across the bridge thinking of the German spaetzle I was about to try for the first time. I easily found it and saw several people sitting outside at tables on the patio and went inside and found them to be pretty busy. I walked up to the bar and, after waiting a bit and not being acknowledged by anyone who walked past, approached a somewhat large, blonde German woman asking if they could accommodate one (I was alone) for the night. She sighed heavily, looked at me hatefully and said, "No, we're busy". I saw some tables I could probably sit at, and I contemplated asking someone else after she rudely walked away, but decided I didn't want to spend my money here and went elsewhere for dinner. Not a good first impression. I told my fiancee when he arrived later that night we should come back later, but we found many other places to eat where we were treated better throughout the 9 days we stayed in Munich so I never made it back. We had a wonderful -- and filling!!-- lunch here. The place is charming inside and seems to be frequented by locals primarily. Definitely Bavarian fare is on feature. We had the pork with creamy mushroom sauce and spaetzle which was a huge portion with two pieces of pork. We also enjoyed their kasespaetzle. We had the pancake soup and liver spaetzle soup. We had an okay experience here. I think locals are treated much nicer than tourists here. The woman server was pretty gruff and seemed generally unhappy. The food was okay- my spetzle was pretty salty and I enjoyed the one from Hofbrau House better. The beer was pretty cheap. My husband and I stopped in on a Sunday night in December. It was super crowded and every table was reserved. But they were very gracious and were able to sit at the bar. It ended up being perfect because the bartender was great to talk to and we got to see him tap a new barrel of helles beer right in front it us. I think we were the only tourists in the whole place. Comfortable and authentic feeling Bavarian Restaurant. Our waitress did not speak English, which was fine but, of course we were unable to ask questions about the menu items and we did not receive the correct style beers. Indoor and outdoor dining, to accommodate a bustling crowds in this busy area. However, there was only 1 or 2 servers so service was understandably slow with the amount of patrons, under the circumstances the pace was fine. Went here while on a group vacation for Oktoberfest. Took about 30min to be seated but we were a group of 12 for dinner and it was a busy night. But because of the long wait, the host gave us each a glass of sparkling wine, automatic bonus points. We sat inside, but if it was warmer it would of been great to sit outside, the view of the surrounding buildings is gorgeous! Once we sat down the waiter was very nice and accommodating. The food was delicious and extremely filling. I had the Gnocchi w/ prawn, and although it was delicious my friends tortellini w/ ham was delicious in every part. The pizzas were big & delicious, the white pizza with red onions & some kind of pig on it, lol, was especially delicious. And the chocolate sufle was worth the over eating . Coming from NYC we were extremely surprised that for 12 people (and mostly big hungry guys) and for all we are, the bill was only 192 euros. Love this place! Next time I'm in Munich, I'll have to drop by for dinner. read more

On my never-ending journey to eat all the schnitzel humanly possible, my friends and I made a stop here based on the excellent reviews. Yelp Don't Lie. I got a glass of the Augustiner Edelstoff and it was perfect, exactly what I think of when I want a smooth, easydrinking German beer. The wiener schnitzel was off the chains, not quite the best I've had, but for sure a close second! The crisp exterior and juicy interior of the cutlet are all I could ever want. We also finished the meal was some delicious apfelstrudel that came with a side of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Absolutely divine. I've got no idea how to make a strudel, but whatever the hell Gasthaus Isarthor did is what it should be! There was also ample seating outside and an ashtray on each table. It started to rain so we moved on inside and the furniture and decorations on the inside felt like stepping into the 1800's (or what I think of a small German pub to look and feel like in the 1800's). Everyone was really friendly in there and the bartender was cracking jokes with all the patrons - in German so they could've been making 'Yo Momma' jokes for all I knew. read more

I had one last day in München, and my better half asked only for one thing: Käsespätzle. We'd pretty much exhausted the list of breweries and restaurants we'd earmarked earlier, and left it to a little Google-fu to find out where to have one last meal in the city. I literally googled "best Käsespätzle" and left it to chance to see what popped up. Gasthaus Isarthor's name came up more than once, which was more than enough for me to give this place a whirl. Their website was entirely in German, which was a sign of things to come, and I'm glad that I had the wherewithal to translate the page and screen cap it, so that I could have a clue to what I'd be ordering once we got there. Upon entering, the place was completely packed, and it was abundantly clear that it was very much a locals joint. Most everyone there were in uniforms of businesses nearby, and not a single person spoke a lick of anything other than German. It wasn't until a bunch of Englishmen rolled in, did we hear anything otherwise. Thankfully we were able to find a single two-top by the bar, and the bartender was quick to present us with menus, that thankfully matched what I saw on the internet. So my fiancee got her Käsespätzle, and I ordered this fantastic concoction that was a combination of dumplings, eggs, cheese and bacon. And of course, beer. This place was an Augustiner pub, which frankly means no difference to me, because I pretty much learned that I was a fan of all German beers. Overall, this place was a delight to visit, and I'm glad that I got to see one really local-only kind of place, and really soak in the atmosphere of a non-touristy German pub. The food was great, the beer too, the cost wasn't at all bad (25~ euros for food and beer for two), and I'd totally recommend this to any other traveler who wants to get a taste of local, while not venturing too far off the tourist path. read more

The setting is beautiful, classic Bavarian countryside style, with large wood table, boar heads on the walls and a clientele that was exclusively German. The spaetzle was the best yet, fresh caramelized onions on it, and the fried potatoes were wonderfully seasoned. It is not a fast food restaurant, we enjoyed sipping on our drinks for sometime before our order was taken but the ambiance made it a great place go spend time and the food was well worth it!! read more

My first meal in Munich on this trip. I decided to check out this spot. It had so many good reviews. For starter, I heard so much about their beer. I ordered the Weiss beer and it's damn good. I had to hold myself back from drinking it in one gulp (it would've been a big one since its a little). The atmosphere is loud and fun. There groups of men and women - equal in numbers. It definitely has that local feel, which I totally love. I built up a good appetite by working out at the hotel gym, walking about 1.5 miles to get here, and my last meal was 1pm. It's 10pm and they help the kitchen open for me. They close the kitchen at 10pm and the bar at 1am. I started with the beef noodle soup since its freezing cold outside (in the minus Celsius range). It was bland but I learned to welcome the simplicity of German soups. I also had the pretzel with my beer - a no brainier. My main course was the pork cutlets in mushroom sauce accompanied with spätzle - like Mac and cheese but hella better (yeah, I'm from Northern California, LOL). Yummy! Come for the ambience (loud and German), hang out for the food, and close out the night with a few beers. You can't go wrong. read more

Excellent place, not something you'd stumble on as it's across the split road near downtown, but take the time to get there, and enjoy the atmosphere and food. I had the Ochsenfetzen in Dijonsenfsauce mit hausgemachten Spätzle and it was delicious. The tourist couple I ate with from Maryland had eaten there before and I see why. The beer was good, the outside tables were clean. Service was OK but there was only one waitress that night. She was very nice, but working her tail off. I'd go again. We got lucky and snagged one of the small tables near the bar you can order food at. Came here with some local German friends who suggested the place. Located in in Isarthorplatz away from the touristy area, the restaurant had a very spirited atmosphere filled with mostly other locals. The company was fun, the food hearty, the portions large and the Augustine beer flowing. Great time was had by all. Very moderately priced (~100 Euros for five of us, although one only drank). Reservations definitely recommended as this place was jam-packed. Also, note that it's cash only. read more

I'm not a beer drinker but since I'm here I decided to ask waiters for a recommendation. He suggested a beer from the barrel, it was a lagger I believe... What I know for sure is that it was tasty and refreshing. Cash only and off the beaten path but not by much. Head outside of the Roman walls for truly authentic Bavarian food. You can tell as we were the only Americans over a phenomenal lunch. Pork and German noodles were mixed perfectly with the light mushroom gravy. Side salad of course. There is a pan fried dish of sausage, potatoes and cabbage that is on the return list. Augustine's is the beer served which is awesome as you cannot get this Weisbier in the states. Very cool. Very authentic and they could care less perhaps about social media reviews. Gasthaus Isarthor is by far one of the best German/Bavarian food restaurants in Munich. It's about as authentic as you can get from the decor, food, atmosphere, and clientele. This is not a place to come and be a loud American... as the locals eat here and do not appreciate touristy behavior. If you want to cause a ruckus, go to the Hofbräuhaus. If you want a fantastic German experience in a local restaurant come here. Pretty much every item on the menu is great and I keep going back to try different options. The Duck (Ente) and Roast Pork (Schweinebraten) are particularly great. Isarthor is Cash Only so make sure you hit the ATM before going there and also if you're headed there for dinner call ahead and make a reservation. read more
