When fall hits, this place is a must visit. With not many German options in the Twin Cities, we're grateful for this place. Depending on where you live, this can be a little drive but the drive and the property are beautiful. With ample space for Oktoberfest and other events, Gasthaus is a treasured gem. This was a fun outing for me as I've never been to a German restaurant despite being of some German heritage. We had a group of 8. I ordered the cheese schnitzel...whatever it's actually called. It was rich and really delicious! I loved the potatoes that were pan fried but didnt love my spaetzle as it was the least of the shining stars for me. Ambiance is amazing, food is fine... wait staff is fun and the accordion player knows how to have fun. We had a party of ten, celebrating a 90"th birthday, they helped us celebrate with fun music. They don't provide anything special for the birthday person. The food is in the expensive side for what you get, it's bland at best. They also have a significant credit card surcharge, well beyond a normal credit card surcharge, for any restaurant we've been to. We went to celebrate my mother-in-law's 89th birthday. There were 7 of us. The Gasthaus has a very fun, authentic Bavarian vibe. An accordionist went from table to table playing classics like The Beer Barrel Polka and Edelweiss as well as some unexpected classic rock faves from the likes of Tom Petty, Queen and others. When they played happy birthday the entire restaurant sang along and enthusiastically chanted "Ziggy zaggy ziggy zaggy". It was a super fun time and my mother in law was happy. Most of us ordered one of the schnitzels. The portions are quite large. My wife and I split the jagerschnitzel. I don't really like to eat meat or fried foods, but there weren't a lot of other options. (Mob rule usually determines our restaurant choices when we go out with our in-laws). I felt it was kind of chewy and the mushroom sauce over salted and sadly lacking in actual mushrooms. That said, everyone else, including my wife, loved their food. My brother-in-law, raved about the roast beef with potatoes; however, he's not exactly a foodie. Bland, salty, overcooked foods are kind of his thing. My mother-in-law had the "pork knuckles". I don't know what exactly constitutes a pork knuckle, but the portion quite large. More like a pork leg, I'd say. She complained that it was way too much food, but somehow managed to put a pretty big dent in it, still saving enough for leftovers the next day. Fortunately, I was the only judgey food snob at our table and everyone else was more than happy with what they ordered. To drink, they had the usual German beers and wine. We ordered the Gluhwein, a spicy mulled red wine that is served hot. Very traditional and really good. I would definitely recommend it. If you want to experience fun, German night out, aren't concerned about your cardiovascular health and enjoy a hearty meat and potatoes type of meal, The Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter is worth a visit. read more

(We had a group of 6). It's just everything felted pressured and hurried. The food was... ok. No one's were particularly hot. It was all... fine. Overall, the vibe is good. Unfortunately, they just raised beer prices to $9 for a pint. It was $9.48 with tax for ONE beer!! That's crazy. The bartender completely ruins the experience. She is crabby and only friendly when trying to get tips. She creates a culture of fear. I witnessed a server scared to fill up her water cup. She also went back and forth with another server today. We stopped in for a late lunch after seeing the country side. Lovely atmosphere, waitress was attentive and friendly. Food was wonderful. We had the chef lunch special of schnitzel topped with an egg with potato salad. The rostbratin with potato's looked so gravy,plentiful was great too. We ate there tonight and it was amazing on all levels. The food was delicious. The beef was tender. All the food was well paired and well described on the menu, which helped everyone in our party make decisions. The owner was our waiter for the night, helping out his staff. Jimmy was personable and perfectly conversational. He answered our questions and made great suggestions that left my friends very satisfied. He was jovial and really seems to love his job. The ambiance fits the theme well. It isn't tacky and the table clothes are made in Austria and well protected from damage as they are 100 years or so old. The place was busy but not loud. And the service didn't reflect that they were busy, which is nice because it shows they know good service. we had a reservation for 12 on mother's day. the person who took my reservation did not tell me that it was a buffet. i would definitely have booked another day had i known. the food was subpar. buffet small and crowded. staff was trying hard but they couldn't keep the hot trays full or clean up the mess around the trays. cost was $32/person and did not even include coffee or soft drinks. way overpriced for quality of the meal. the only dish any of my party liked was the pork. other than that i feel like i paid $32. for cottage cheese and pickled beets! had we been able to order off the menu maybe we would have liked the gasthaus better but based on this i do not recommend it. read more

Great ambience. The food is good. I can see how it can get very busy on the weekends though, so come early if you don't have reservations. Great outdoor seating in the summertime. Good food portions. If there was a sixth star, I would give it. I was there for lunch a couple of days ago on Friday with a group of about 20. I watched the staff handle complete douche bags like professionals while also maintaining nearly perfect decorum. Their kids were running around like hellions. They were yelling, screaming, disrupting our dining experience on the deck, and interrupting our friends who were sitting out in the front of the restaurant on picnic tables drinking beer. I overheard this group demand the waitress provide food service to them about a hundred yards away from the building near where our friends were sitting. When that was not an option, they demanded that they be given "to-go" food so they can carry it all over the property. Our server told this group they do not offer to-go food and that they can sit anywhere in the dining area, be served, and eat. We were sitting out by our friends, came up, asked the same questions to the same waitress, and got the same answers. No big deal. We sat down, got excellant food and service, and have no complaints at all. But, this group didn't like that because (and I'm serious) their kids must be allowed to run amuck across a couple of acre property outside of their supervision. If I was them, I'd be too embarrassed to admit to someone that I can't keep my kids under control while they eat! They then asked, and this is a very nice way to put it, to speak to a manager. The manager came up, and told them exactly the same thing. He explained that he is not going to require the staff to provide food service outside of the dining area, nor will he require the staff to bus, what seems to be, about an acre of property for their dishes and left-over food. As they were too consumed with belittling the staff to the manager, their kids kept disturbing us while the server continually had to babysit their children. After about 10 minutes of listening to their unreasonable demands and watching what was going on, the manager told them they may sit down at a table if they want. After telling them one last time that they may eat anywhere in their dining areas, he walked away. This group stood there in disbelief that the manager wouldn't modify the entire operation of the restaurant by sacrificing the quality of the food and atmosphere just for them. This group of people clearly has no idea how to act in public. If someone came to my house and treated me and my visitors the way this group treated the restaurant staff and their guests, I would have called the cops. The sauerbraten and Keller beer was excellent as well. But, that's no surprise. If a restaurant staff cares enough to protect each other and the place they work, they obviously care a lot about the quality of the food they produce. read more

Terrible experience. Went to have lunch with my family and another family. They wouldn't allow us to eat in the picnic table area off the formally outdoor eating area where our little kids could run around. Asked for food to go and they said that wasn't an option. "The food wouldn't taste good by the time we got home." Chose to leave and not eat there. Very unimpressed with management. Will not go there and wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

So happy that they are back open. I'd say there isn't a more picturesque place around to have a beer in the summer. We love to take bike rides and stop there since it is just off the Browns Creek trail. Food is good and fairly traditional German. We tend to go for the ambience and stay for the great beer selection. A giant pretzel is a winner too. read more

Horrible non-authentic food and ambiance. I always try German restaurants whenever I visit a new area. This is by far the worst one I've been to out of all I've been to. The inside was dirty and didn't have that German feel most folks expect. Flies everywhere because they leave the windows open for beer going outside. The bland dinner salad was sliced cucumbers in a watery mayonnaise. Dinner rolls we're pre-frozen. Waitress was inattentive and hard to get to come by. I ordered the schweinshaxe which was horrendous. The skin, which is supposed to be about as crispy as a pork rind, was so soft and fatty. I took all the skin off (I could have rolled it around a pencil tightly 20 times no problem) and was left with little edible meat. I had maybe 3 bites before just eating my sides and giving up. My wife's schnitzel was good, so an extra star for that. I would not recommend this place to anybody. Might be a decent spot for a loud drinking crowd, but if you're looking for a nice authentic German meal, or a good meal in general, go elsewhere. read more
