We ate here today for an early dinner!. Phils is a restaurant and Bar in Stillwater,MN built in 1928 as a log cabin style. The food is Greek Style with a bit of Midwest Cheeseburger theme. I had a chocolate martini and it was delicious! They drizzled my glass with chocolate syrup and poured it for me, Shaken not stirred. We ordered the Griiled Octopus for appetizer. It was pretty good, It My first taste of this sea fella, so my assessment may not be as fair as others who have had it, it wasn't chewy at all but I do love calamari better! I ordered the liver and onions and was pleasantly surprised at the heaping amount and the beautiful presentation. pretty tasty. The rest of the table ordered cheeseburgers! They have Lots of delicious ingredients , very good cheeseburgers and fries! It was my parent's Birthday! yep Juneteenth ! ! They each got a free piece of Baklava! I also ordered a piece of chocolate cake. It was very delicious. not too chocolaty, just right. Buttery frosting . Yummy. Ambiance was a little noisy, not too bad. seating is not super comfortable. The chairs are a little old and sticky , my body is particular and after 2 hours I was sore. The Waiter was not very friendly and did not seem to like his job. It makes such a difference when you're out celebrating and the server makes you feel unwelcome. It's part of the whole experience and part of what you paying for. Good food, mediocre experience all around . Id probably not come back. Perhaps id try the outdoor seating and give the Martini another go! read more

We had a very nice dinner at the Hideaway! Service was OK but the food more than made up for somewhat unenthusiastic server. What surprised me was the number of very authentic greek dishes on the menu. The Gyro dinner was super nice, and the other meals my companions ordered were also very nice. Log cabin...yes! Always a great meal at Phil's. Lots of great options on the menu from steaks to fish. I ordered the filet with mushroom buttons and garlic mashed potatoes as my side. Everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend adding the seasoning to any meat option. I also ordered an old fashioned that was just okay (whiskey version). My only cons with Phil's is that it's a very small space but very popular so definitely recommend making a reservation. The tables in there tight and close in proximity against other tables...like the back of my chair was right up against another chair from another party. Cool atmosphere with the log cabin feel and definitely check out the bathrooms (single stalls only). read more

This place was ok 5 years ago, tonight ! Crammed us in the corner amongst 2 other tables even tho there was plenty of seating elsewhere. Waitress barely gave us time to open the drink menu before trying to take our food order. Once she finally came back I ordered the ribeye only to be told they were out of ribeye......it's a steak house, how are you out of ribeye on a Sunday night at 7:00? Settled for the New York strip.... Very bland and overdone will not be returning to this place again. P.S. the 3 small, thumbnail sized, and wilted, pieces of lettuce garnish on the plate was comical. read more

Our waitress was AWESOME she was very friendly and open to substitutions. My boys had burger patties that were PHENOMENAL! The octopus appetizer was so tender! I didn't love the duck, the oysters weren't great and the steak was average. read more

I think this may have been the best meal I've had ever! Filet was huge and done perfectly! Garlic linguine was recomended and was fantastic. I hate that this place is 2 hours away. I received a gift certificate for my birthday and we came for dinner. The food was good. We did order oysters and I realize it was the wrong time of year but they were served at room temp on a bed of wilted greens. That was disappointing considering the cost. Oysters are served on ice. Phil's Tara Hideaway is great! The atmosphere has a Wisconsin supper club vibe (and plenty of parking unlike downtown Stillwater). We had a large group but we got a 5:00 pm reservation no problem. Our waitress was great! Very attentive, quick, and knowledgeable about the menu. Now for the food. Do yourself a favor and order the Athenian Fried Potatoes. They won't disappoint! My husband ordered the special which was a steak and mushroom risotto dish. PHENOMENAL! Please add this to your regular menu, Phil's! The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and the mushroom risotto was salty, creamy, and delicious. I ordered the Hazelnut Encrusted Walleye and was underwhelmed. This place gets crowded on weekend evenings, so would strongly suggest a reservation. Kitschy log place in Stillwater (not downtown, but rather up on hill off Hwy 36 frontage road), free ample parking. Hostess was fabulous as was the server. Tables are really tightly packed, and people had to shimmy between to get to their tables. Atmosphere was cozy, vibrant and bit of older crowd. Drinks are strong ;) Food was outstanding, we tried octopus appetizer and was very good, also Gyro dinner was gigantic portion and best gyro meat ever had. Another party member had the pan fried walleye and described as delicious. Tried the Greek potatoes (Atheos??) super yummy savory crispy with warm cheese crumbled on top. We would recommend and will return to Phil's Tara Hideaway, only reason giving it a 4 is too crowded dining room seating. read more

We had a great time on 12/26/25. I do have a request: If mgmt could eliminate at least one four top in the front room to alleviate the dining congestion and minimize noise it could make the dining experience even more pleasurable. haven't been here in quite sometime, so thought we'd give it a try. what a bad decision that was!! two of the four of us ordered hamburgers medium rare and they came out well done, the greek chicken was so dry, it was hard to chew and the gyros meat was leather hard. the room temperature was overly warm because the tiny air conditioner couldn't do the cooling. the service was less than stellar. it seemed like the waiter had too many tables to be able to concentrate on doing a good job for everyone. bottom line we will never go back here. i don't know how they get away charging the prices they do for such subpar food, service and ambiance! read more

It's hard to pin-point where this place fits in. It's fancy food and dishes, but it has a loud and vibrant atmosphere. The log cabin vibe is really cool. You'd expect the food to not be as good as it is... but I was impressed. The Pork was cooked perfect medium rare. Again, I wasn't expecting them to hit this, but they did it perfectly. I especially liked the green sauce that accompanied the dish. This place can be packed so it might be wise to go at off-peak times... especially because the tables are really close together. read more

We pretty much enjoyed our supper at Phil's Tara Hideaway. our server,Jackson was great. The Moussaka was a over baked and crispy around the edge. Small, quaint little place. Service was quick, not super personable, but did a good job. The food was fantastic. We will absolutely be back for different menu items. We tried a daily special salmon linguini, pan fried walleye and the Athenian potatoes. Whatever you do, just order the Athenian potatoes.. don't ask questions, just get three orders.. they are garlicky, buttery, feta filled, just delicious. The linguini and walleye were also good, but nothing too spectacular. I can't wait to come back for a steak and more potatoes. read more

The BEST Greek salad! Really great Greek food options to try. I had the chicken Corinthian which was delicious. My husband got the seafood pasta and we have also gotten the Gyros which were perfect! We showed up around 6:30 on Saturday night and the restaurant was pretty busy. The host went out of his way to put two tables together for our group of 6. This was my second time at PTH and I give it 5 stars both times. I am SAD because I have driven by this place so many times and just assumed it was a basic American bar food joint. No. PTH is like a supper club with bonus greek fare in a charming cabin atmosphere and fair prices. PTH serves my FAVORITE restaurant brussels anywhere- roasted with bacon and Gorgonzola- yum! Our steak was perfectly cooked to our liking and the Athenian potatoes are so flavorful and melt in your mouth. We have always had wonderful service too. Highly recommend! read more

Had the ribeye medium well it is the best steak I have had in Minnesota!! This is a quaint little place on the border of Stillwater and Wisconsin. It's always busy and they don't take reservations but let me tell you the food is top notch the service could've been a little bit better but overall I will give them five stars. read more

Pretty bummed. We go to Phil's for a special night. Food was good but service was horrible! We waited for so long to even get any attention from our server. I had to remind the server about my drink order. Apps came late and our oysters never came at all. She was too busy, she said, to serve us. So disappointed. This place is unexpectedly amazing. The inside looks like a cabin with tables tightly but efficiently organized. The Athenian potatoes are to die for good. They have a perfect blend of seasoning and are topped with feta. The burger was juicy and perfectly made. They have a patio area which will be nice in the summer. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, but not annoying. The crowd when we went was all adults which created a nice atmosphere. Only thing to take note that the parking lot is mostly gravel, so with the spring melt the ground was a bit squishy. Definitely a place not to be missed when you're in the Stillwater area. read more

This restaurant is fine dining and worth trying at least once. It's very hard to get a reservation and only open certain days, so the best way we got in was by showing up close to 4pm and it was already packed. We got lucky and didn't have to wait. The staff was great and made awesome recommendations for food and drinks. I really enjoyed how flavorful the prime rib was and the baked potato side I chose was worth it as well. I love au jus and definitely added to the taste, however I found it hard to cut such a big piece of meat without spilling the sauce. Medium Rare was perfectly cooked and would def order it again. Parking lot is super small, but holds enough cars for the amount of people they can sit. The prime rib comes with horseradish and I'm not a fan, however my mother got the same meal a week prior and said the horseradish was amazing and added a spark to the meal. read more

Hello Well I do not know how to explain Phil Tara's. Maybe this will help! The menu goes from $14-$50 a plate! It is an old cabin looking place with less expensive and more expensive. A cabin that meets a unique sandwich bistro, that meets fine dinining!! And the customers match the menu! Super laid back with that mix. It was my first time and they pack the house even on a Tuesday! My Sea Bass was great and my wife had the Pork Tenderloin. Great as well! We will be back! read more

Finally! I had the time and pleasure of visiting this Stillwater establishment! I frequent Stillwater quite a bit but this restaurant isn't in downtown Stillwater. I had pictured this place to always just serve steaks and shrimp but oh boy was I surprised to see that they offered so many Greek items on the menu. Having been too many Greek Islands this was a treat. Our bartender was great we talked about his time in Greece and his love for the food. Our visit was during the weekday in the late afternoon right after they opened for the day at 3:00. The phone was ringing constantly for people to make reservations. They only make them during the week and by phone it seems. We tried Grilled Octopus Citrus marinade, charred lemon, olive oil, fresh herbs which was amazing. The complementary bread basket. We shared the Seafood Penne Mojo Verde Rock shrimp, bay scallop, roasted red pepper, roasted tomato, caramelized onion, house cured bacon, fresh chive which was a huge portion (I did include a photo of this) we had a few drinks and also some Ouzo (which is a common Greek drink). This place was really good years ago. The four of us had the walleye, the burger, broiled shrimp and gyro sandwich. The shrimp was so terrible, it must have been farm raised. It was in a bowl of butter to try to mask the fishy flavor. It was rubbery and hard to cut. The orzo rice for the side tasted like cardboard. The gyro was bland and fell a part instantly once touched and became more of a salad. The walleye was flavorless and inedible. The burger was the bright spot but the fries were so salty that i would have needed a pitcher of water to wash them down. I couldn't go that bc it was too hard to get refills from our server. The ambience is the same as always...an old school charm but the tables are stacked on top of one another so you're bumping elbows with your neighbors. They could be at least had the fire place on tonight with it being so cold or offered a soup selection. Neither were available. I'm sad to say we won't be back here anytime soon. I hope they can improve on things in the mean time, but I fear that Tara's is becoming like every other place post-Covid...more expensive, less service and poor food quality. New Years eve 2024 always a beautiful atmosphere cozy and friendly. 7:00 pm reservation sat right a way. from there it was very rushed . ordered drink arrived immediately ordered appetizer came out within minutes cold and not cook throughout. entrees arrive soon after. baked potato was cold and walleye Luke warm. very dissatisfied with being rushed with cold food. was there 50 minutes. felt it being New Year's Eve they rushed through orderes to do turnarounds on table. read more

One of my absolute favorite places to go in the Stillwater area. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food and service are phenomenal. I would hesitate only a little on calling it 'fine dining' because of the atmosphere, but the food and drink are on par with upper scale places. The place is quite small and in a log cabin style building, so it might be easy to look past it. The building was, quite literally, hidden until the new bridge went in a few years ago. It does get busy quick and I don't believe they take reservations, so do be prepared for a slight wait if you go during normal rush times. The drink menu is always a fun start to your meal. They only have a small number of wines by the glass, but the cocktails are fun. I actually prefer them as an after dinner treat. The gyros and fettuccine are my faves here. I would also note that portions are HUGE, can easily split or take leftovers. I always get a side of Athenian potatoes no matter what I order and the pear gorgonzola salad is also top notch. There's something for everyone on the menu, from burgers to pasta to grilled meats. You can't go wrong with a stop here. read more
