What an amazing gem of a restaurant! We stopped by for a casual dinner, started with some drinks at the bar and decided to eat at the bar as well. The recommendations of the bartender were spot on - we split a mushroom soup (hearty but perhaps just a bitbtoo salty). For a main course we had a duck breast and a daily special halibut. Stopped in randomly on a Saturday afternoon to have lunch with my daughter. The dark colors and stone walls make the basement restaurant welcoming, moody, and cozy. Our server was very friendly, got us seated right away in a booth. She explained that Black Rooster uses mostly local and seasonal ingredients so their menu is pretty small and always changing, which I love! Gives patrons a good reason to keep coming back. Even with limited menu it was hard to choose. Everything looked so good! I ordered the mushroom melt with side salad and my daughter ordered the kid's cheeseburger with fries. Honestly, when the cheeseburger came out it smelled so good my daughter inhaled it. My wild mushroom melt was the perfect blend of umami and savory. What an unexpected gem in Hudson! After a day of fun, a group of us were deciding where to have dinner to close out our evening. A quick search of Hudson restaurants led us to Black Rooster and we were oh so glad it did. First, you walk downstairs to the restaurant, very speakeasy vibe. The whole space is a little dark, but beautiful. Not loud, could still hold a conversation easily. We were seated in the "back room", likely because we had more than 4 people. Drink menu was full of interesting options and some fun specials as well. Food menu is a little select, but not so short you can't find something to enjoy. I decided on a piñajito (a refreshing mix of a piña colada and a mojito) for my beverage and the fried chicken sandwich for my meal. Both were absolutely excellent. The side of fries was absolutely plentiful. Others had the burger (which came highly recommended from a shop owner down the street) and the pork chop, which also looked fantastic. Our server was absolutely incredible and the owner came out and thanked us at the end of the meal. Overall, good experience, good service, and goos food. We will definitely be returning! read more

Black Rooster From day one I have seen how patience and determination have led to a very successful result in this small but very nice restaurant in Hudson, WI. It has been proven that with quality and perseverance you go very far while maintaining quality, service and innovation. The service mainly says a lot. Every time I am there, I feel welcomed by the waitresses who, upon recognizing us, give us very professional service. Chef Rick maintains the high quality of the dishes and innovates. My only suggestion is the small dessert menu, which knowing their expertise could be broader. Sea Scallop special - scallops were excellent but the corn mix underneath was not very flavorful and the tomatoes were not very good. This could be 5 star with a little work on flavor. This was by far my favorite restaurant experience on my work trip to Hammond. There are two entrances - both downstairs in an office building. The dining area is quaint and charming. The service was friendly and quick. The drink menu looked creative and fun. But the food stole the show. The food was SO GOOD. The tartare is probably one of the best I have ever had - it is lemony and capery and melt in your mouth incredible. The duck breast was cooked to perfection with crispy skin and perfectly tender meat. I don't even like peas and the sauce was so good I ate most of them anyways. 10/10 will be back next trip. I'm not one to complain, but this simply pushed me over the edge. Do NOT order the New York strip steak. I've never had such a flat tasting steak with so much fat ever! Had them replace the steak to which the second round portion was much smaller, still fatty, and simple no flavor. Black Rooster Bistro is worth the drive from the cities East or West! We had the opportunity to visit twice during a recent visit to Hudson and loved every dish. For starters the dumplings are exceptional as well as the pork belly and Scotch Egg. The Scotch Egg was the best I've ever tasted. The yolk runs as you cut into it and mixes perfectly with the chef prepared sauce! For entrees we tried the pork sandwich, bologna sandwich as well as the duck and chicken entrees. We ventured away from our usual aniversary spot to try something new. Everything seemed promising from reading reviews. Parking was easier than I anticipated for a Saturday afternoon/evening in Hudson. When we entered, the vibe seemed good, but the place was nearly empty. At the end of my review, I will give my opinion as to why it's empty. The staff was friendly and helpful, and we probably should have stuck a little closer to the server's recommendations. We started off with milk braised pork belly, which is said to be a popular appetizer. It was tasty, but very small for the price. My wife ordered the pan fried walleye. It was good, but nothing special. I had the schnitzel sandwich. It was so-so. I've eaten schnitzel in Germany, and thought it was dry. Same here, especially when paired with a pretzel bun. I get the "german style" pairing, but it was chewy and dry. Keep in mind, this was not recommended by our server. We finished with vanilla panna cotta. It was delicious, but not my style for a dessert. As far as drinks are concerned, the campfire old fashioned was spectacular! That could be very dangerous, as I could sip on that all day. I had an Oliphant Hefeweizen. Our server warned me that it was lacking citrus notes, and she was right. It was not a hefeweize that I would ever order again. They were also running a happy hour special on a tequila mule. Again, not something we would ever order again. So, why was Black Rooster lacking customers? In my humble opinion, they are reaching as far as the food is concerned. Our normal anniversary meal is at one of the premier restaurants in downtown St. Paul. The price is the same, but the food is not as good at Black Rooster. I think this place would flourish with a simpler, less "gourmet" menu, and lower prices. First time trying the 4 month old Black Rooster Bistro. The dyed in the wool supporters of the previous establishment will be harder to turn than us. The previous establishment was there for at least 40 years and served food from a European country. Both factors added to the loyalty. Change it up, mix it up, try something new. We did and we liked it. The decor is cool and modern. The coolness comes somewhat from the subterranean location but it felt fresh and clean. The Chardonnay was a California - 10 Span Vineyards. I asked because it was delicious but I'm no wine snob. Himself had a gin and tonic. He ordered a special - Argentinian shrimp and grits, he enjoyed it. I wasn't hungry so I got the mushroom soup and it was delicious! I was curious about the ricotta dumpling, there were three and I ate two. The panna cotta was outstanding; fresh berries and a creamy texture. We'll be back with friends and family. Support local - this establishment does! Server, Cassandra, was awesome. Knowledgeable about all items on menu and made the experience better than expected. Very friendly and respectfully attentive. Started with drinks- Campfire Old Fashioned and Thank You Berry Much; both were a treat! Shared the Ricotta Dumplings (with Spring Vegetables) which were light as a feather and so creamy. The mushroom, peas, fennel and asparagus combination with the herb dressing along w/dumplings made it worth getting again in the future (if on the menu!) For supper, husband had Schnitzel sandwich (out of memories from prior owner); was good but just not the same. But they accommodated his request about different bread w/o question. A little more well done but was still good. I had the Bistro burger, it is a super deceiving burger... looked really small at first but appeared to be a double patty of meaty goodness- the locally sourced bacon+beef mix is fantastic. Could taste the bacon but wasn't overwhelming. At first I thought it was overdone but I was wrong- was quite tender and very good. Definitely going back! We have heard amazing things about Black Rooster and got to sample it on Hudson Food Walk and made it back last night. Just me and my partner, started off with classic mushroom soup which they nailed, enjoyed Ricotta Dumplings, deep fried and nice and light, then shared the burger which was scrumptious with perfect fries. Ended with sweet corn panna cotta with fig jam and salted popcorn (you read that right) and was a perfect end to a delicious meal! Plus we learned it was created by a 19yr old kitchen staff...wow, such you g talent! I personally didn't love the s'mores old fashion but many do! looking forward to our next visit. I wanted the kitchen to switch out my side of mashed potatoes but the chef was unwilling. Since I don't eat meat I ordered the fish.... I paid the full price to eat a good but smaller portion of fish with no side. What happened to pleasing the patron. Anything besides potatoes would if worked for me. I eat at fine dining establishments and have always been able to have the chef recommend something else. Potatoes don't agree with me. So 3 stars for the uncaring chef. The desert was pretty good.
