This is certainly a dive bar, but a pretty neat one. The staff is very personable and the food is good. There are more than a few places to sit, a surprising amount and there is a lot of history here. I believe it's the oldest continually operating Barr in Wisconsin. Either way, it is what a dive bar is good for, very relaxed with nice staff and patrons. It could use a few more selections of IPA's though. read more

I have always LOVED breakfast at Dick's, and their prices are so reasonable which is why I attached photo of the menu. Get this! Monday - Thursday they have a special: 2 eggs any style 2 slices of bacon 2 slices of toast For $2.99, AMAZING! I got there eggs benedict with their famous and very delicious hollandaise sauce. Their hash browns were the best I have ever had flavorful and done to perfection and not greasy (my biggest hash brown complaint) My friend had the burrito and said it was stuffed with sausage and veggies and big enough to feed 2. Now the only complaint I have and you really have to look past it. The tables have some type of acrylic on them which make them feel sticky and the place in general needs a good cleaning. Even the salt and pepper shaker had dirty film on them and the wood work had ketchup and other splatters and the window must have had a years of kids dirty hand marks smeared on it. I love their food so much I can get past this but think how much better reviews could be if it were cleaned up. One other minus, our waitress never asked how the food was or refill our water. And last time I checked 19 is not divisible by 4. . Her explanation is it's packed in here like "200 ppl" while there is 10 people in this bar. . including the 4 of us."tana" who claims she's a nurse . . So disappointing...I'm being generous and calling them out as 3 stars. Next up on my tour of Hudson restaurants & bars was Dick's. I was excited. They're the oldest bar in Hudson. The on-line menu looked pretty good. And we got 2 referrals from local wait staff at other local restaurants. I was SO disappointed. They handed us menus but told us the only thing available off the menu was the appetizers. What??? Then they gave us a single photo copy page of the current "menu" with, basically, burgers, chicken sandwiches, & wraps. NO steaks, NO desserts, NO chicken pasta, NO Lucky Dog Mac & Cheese...NO...lots of stuff. The bartender told us they cut back on food because of COVID. And he said they have a hard time with staffing because of COVID. I know for a fact that this is a load of crap. We've been to 95% of the Hudson restaurants during the pandemic. Do you think LoLo has a photocopy short menu because of COVID? No, they do not. Is Urban Olive & Vine under-staffed? I don't think so. There are plenty of service staff available because so many restaurant people are out of work across the river in Minnesota. On the bright side, the service was great. And the "oldest bar" thing is super cool. I love dive bars. But the food sucked. My burger was okay. But my friend's chicken wraps were dry as hell. I had hope for the hand cut fries. But they were greasy, soggy, under-cooked, and limp. Higher temp in the fryer, please. Bummer. So... I'd say the food is a 2. The service is a 4. And the "oldest bar" in town thing is a 4. I'm averaging it all out to 3 stars. This is a great dive bar for drinking. But forget about the food unless you're drunk and can't tell the difference between good & bad chow. We recently tried the Friday fish fry at Dick's Bar & Grill on the recommendation of friends. The all-you-can-eat fish (cod) is served in smaller portions of 4 pieces along with choice of potato, a side of cole slaw, and a side of tartar sauce. Malted vinegar is also available on request. The fish was very tasty and was served nice and hot, and it had a nice batter without being overly thick. I chose French fries for my potato, and they were nicely seasoned but they were too limp and soggy for my liking. My wife had the mashed potatoes, and she said they were pretty good. The service was excellent and the manager came by a couple of times to check that we were happy with our meal. All in all, I'd eat here again if there weren't so many other fish fries yet to be tried. read more

I was in 'The Hud' for my cousin's wedding and we had just finished breakfast when someone asked -- "Is that a bar sandwiched between two bars, across the street from a couple bars?" "Niet, the one in the middle is a liquor store." Later after visiting the sandbox-sized St. Croix beach and admiring the statue that commemorates the birthplace of the Boy Scouts, I was looking to keep that level of excitement. I ask my cousin-in-law for advice on the local nightlife as I'm researching them on Yelp for iPad. Q: Dibbo's? A. Bikers. Q: Sports Club? A: You'll go days without seeing a woman. Q: Pudge's? A: Bring theme music and a cornerman cuz there's gonna be a fight. Q: Dick's? A: You'll love dicks. I don't know if he was making a recommendation or a prophecy but I decided to give it the old college try. I half expected to be greeted by a sign above the door announcing 'Drinkin' Beer, Shootin' Deer since 1955' but it wasn't country at all. I recognize a dive when I see one. SPIRITS Death's Door Gin: the more something sounds like it's going to bury me in the ground, the more I want to try it. Liquor labeled with poisonous/ radioactive/biohazard warnings seem to have seriously inebriating effects on me. Maybe it's psychosomatic, but this locally distilled liquid was no different. Mad Bird Rum: it has a pink flamingo action figure attached to the bottle and I'm from Florida, I didn't need an excuse. Local Beer: brewed by New Glarus, Grain Belt, and Leinenkugel are better than many craft beers I've had and cheaper than bottled water. Lucky Dog: surprised to see this Brooklyn native on draft so far away from home. I don't know what I was going to if my contraption fell apart while it was under her cast though. NO SMOKING My sibling, being accustomed to smoking in bars unknowingly walked inside with a lit cigarette. He immediately turned around and in those two steps was bombarded with warnings and threats. We'll call her 'Heidi' because in Wisco there's a 50% chance that's actually her name, followed him outside and gave him a relentless lecture. He responded to by lighting two more cigarettes and blowing tire sized smoke rings in her face. Don't worry; Heidi got payback by tripping him as he was running back in for last-call. It's Hudson's oldest bar, yay. It's much more than a dive bar, or it has more rooms than most, at least. (Front and middle bar, restaurant section and the patio makes four.) It's a nice place to get a beer or cocktail, and a surprising variety for a dive bar, with prices to match. Service is usually great. Free popcorn to fuel your thirst. NFL fans: as of the 2018 season, they had NFL Sunday ticket, so you can watch the Packers play when the Vikings are bleeding purple on the Twin Cities stations. There are 'better' places to watch the game with better TVs, but none as fun. It's one of those places that feels different every time you're there, be it a quiet Sunday afternoon or a raging dance party with a DJ on a Saturday night. Sometimes it's really loud. I haven't had any food yet, so no comment about that, and I've only been in the first two rooms, so this review is half complete and I'll have to go back for further research. After shopping in Downtown Stillwater we googled dive bars and found that Dick's was only about 15 minutes away. Always up for a new adventure, we decided to check it out. Parking was free (meters not on during the weekend) and easy to find. Dick's is your typical dive bar. Go here only if you like dive bars or if you have a (very) open mind. The music was blaring, the lighting was dim and the locals were watching football on the multiple TVs. Basic bar food available. My favorite. Cheap, strong Long island. Even more of a favorite. Did not get the waiter's name but he was a laid back fella with long hat and a backwards baseball hat. Sat at the bar from to time chatting with friends but always made it a priority to check in on us. Husband was happy to see Spotted Cow on tap. I was happy they served a delicious Rachel. I used to frequent this bar as you can see by my check-in's on a weekly basis. Ownership has changed along with the prices AND the bartenders. I used to feel valued, welcomed and have a great time when sitting here eating, listening to the juke, and bs'ing with the bartenders. The ones you have behind the bar currently are more interested in their own gossip and snarky behavior. I have no interest in drinking or eating here any longer. Great place! Things have really changed though. Food is good. The wraps are now half the size. The new main owner is now extra special. It feels you're not appreciated as much as the old owner Paul did towards his customers. There should be music playing all the time till the jukebox is played. I always have to play $10 in music to keep away the silence! Is it about the customers, or the jukebox making money??? The drinks are good, but bar tending has gotten very poor. We are on the St. Croix pretty much every week during the summer, and Hudson is a regular stop for us. On our way to or from lunch (usually at Stone Tap) we stop by Dick's Bar for a drink. It is a nice dive bar. It has an odd layout, but it is big enough that you don't feel squished like you might at other dive bars. The service is friendly and prompt. It doesn't hurt that they have more than one area to grab a drink. The drinks themselves are cheap and strong. If you come during their happy hour they have a 2-4-1 deal. As other reviewers have pointed out it is a good place to kick back with friends, but I would agree that there is just something that keeps it from pushing over to the 5 star range. If you find yourself in Hudson this is definitely worth a stop in. 74/100 read more

Tap lines always have been sour tasting, but it has been forever! Service is inconsistent, but it has been for forever! My son and I ate at Dick's on a Friday afternoon. He ordered the fish dinner and I ordered the French Onion Burger. I asked the waitress if the French Onion burger was good. She said she likes it. It sounded delicious. Well, that's where it ended! It was not even close to good! Didn't even have everything on it that was in the description. I guess my expectations were too high! $12 for this "burger" and a $2 up charge for tater tots. I probably haven't been to Dick's since the 80s and most likely will never be there again. Ick! Dick's Bar in Hudson--it's like a glorified hole in the wall but with good food. Does that make any sense? Let's get down to the details! My friends and I were looking for a fun bar to watch the Wisconsin Basketball game on a Saturday afternoon. We've been to a few bars within Hudson but this one looks decorated and fun. Beers are cheap and popcorn is always available. We were able to secure a table and was comfortable for the rest of the game...until they had to take our table away for a party. Understandable but it was a bit too uncomfortable then so we left. However, I'd stop by again for a shot or a beer...or whatever. Great time for a football game! read more

Upon walking in, one might view this as being a sort of "hole-in-the-wall" bar, and it kind of is. But not in a negative way. It has that kind of small town bar sort of feel. Dick's Bar, of course...and I've loved it ever since! Now before you go on thinking this is strange...give it a chance! While Dick's is a typical, grungy, riverside bar (on the St. Croix in Hudson)...the food and the traditional bar-esque atmosphere make it sooo worth it. So throw on a pair of jeans, or hop off your boat and head on in for some greasy-but-great skin-on fries and fried chicken-in-a-hubcap (their specialty). They have great specials every night and it's just the place to hang out in your comfies with your drinking buddies and food friends! For those not as comfortable with the dirty bar scene. Best people watching EVER! We wandered over the border to Dick's after a dinner for a friends birthday recently. It was like taking a step back in time. The music was a good mix of late 90's / early 00's and fun to dance to in a group. Beware: there was nothing short of 5 bachlorette parties there on a random Saturday night. I had the good fortune to eat at Dick's bar of Hudson. This is the kind of places I love to eat. The atmosphere is laid back and the food is great. Greasy spoons and bars tend to have really good food. Dick's is located in down town Hudson, nestled right along the St. Croix river. This bar is just off the main drag though town. The entrance and host station is in the bar. It has that smell that many bars have of stale popcorn and spilled beer. Some may not like that smell, but it brings back memories of great times for me. I took a deep breath as soon as I walked in just to relive some of my wonderful drinking past. I used to have out in bars and clubs a lot. They have a dining room and garden off to the right. Once you enter the dinning room that wonderful bar smell is gone. For me and most people that is a good thing. Although I love the smell of bars, I do not want to eat within the smell. we sat in the dining room with its nice view of the street and garden. The garden looked really cute but it was kind of a warm day and we decided to stay indoor. I ordered a 'Spicy Banana Burger' and Potato Salad. Both were from the specials list and both were fantastic. The 'Spicy Banana Burger was made with grilled banana peppers and cream cheese. I was a little unsure about the cream cheese at first but it was really terrific. They some how cut into a slice. It added a nice freshness to an already good burger. The banana peppers were lightly grilled and served still warm. They were good although I would have caramelized them a little bit more. The Potato Salad was really good. It was obviously made fresh and tasted quite good. It was made with potatoes, eggs and celery for a little crunch. The dressing was a Mayonnaise/mustard base with some spices.
