Ambiance 5/5. Outdated decor just like all VFWs, but this one has AMAZING views of the Mississippi River, so the ugly furniture doesn't even matter anymore. Free and plentiful parking never hurts either. Food 4/5. Broasted chicken was perfect with bubbly crispy skin and tender meat! Sides were okay, but not as good. Next time, I'll get chicken only. The mashed potatoes and gravy came as a generous portion. It also came with some baked beans and coleslaw. Service 5/5. Great service too. I just wanted to get some chicken to take home, but my server said it was a 20 minute wait for Broasted Chicken and offered me a complimentary soda to enjoy while I waited. Crisp on the outside but super juicy inside!!! We had the Lemon Pepper Dry Spice! And I'd order it again!! I've been here with my boyfriend and also on another occasion with my family for a day out by the river. We sat and ate some food, enjoyed the views. We were very disappointed in the menu and the prices! Very expensive mediocre bar food. The service was good and the patio is great.

Fried cheese curds were "out of this world"!! Seriously, can't think of another that compares!! Four of us had dinner, serving size was huge and well worth the price point! Our waitress was polite, nice and on top of anything we needed! Ruben and Rachel didn't seem to have thousand island on them, waitress brought us a side promptly and again these were huge sandwiches! Met a group of classmates here for a lovely lunch. It was a beautiful day in Hastings. I ordered the strawberry salad with chicken and my husband ordered the bacon cheeseburger with chips. Both was good. We sat outside on their patio. Couldn't ask for a nicer day. read more

First time at an UPSCALE WATERFRONT American Legion! :-D Although the decor might be worn or dated, just look out the window. Went with family on a beautiful Summer day and was really impressed by the view and the OUTSTANDING delicious food! Went for recommended Burger Monday Special. $7 (+ add'l/topping) that included parmesan fries. Old School hand pressed patties and caramelized grilled bun. WOW This is when the Locals come when the Main Street is closed pretty much on Monday. Only disappointed with quality of fountain lemonade and iced tea, (if you're the designated driver). We were traveling through the area to visit Michigan's UP. In Hastings for the night, we explored the area for a an interesting local spot with some atmosphere. We were literally driving through a parking lot and saw the tables nestled along the bank of the Mississippi River with a breathtaking view of the bridge behind us. We immediately stopped and were stunned by the excellent food and drink and the breathtaking atmosphere. This was the best dining experience we have had in years. I need to be more diligent in taking pics & videos but the views from the legion were so amazing that I totally got lost in looking over the Mississippi river. You have to see it for yourself! Went in on a Monday afternoon, and they had a hamburger special, which I got. The burger was fairly decent and the fries were crisp and seasoned well. Our server Sandy was wonderful and attentive. The menu is limited to finger food (I guess, which is to be expected). The seating area is a little dated (probably to be expected also) and the bathrooms could definitely use some TLC. read more

We ate here after one of our bike group members insisted we try it. From the parking lot, it looks like a dive-then you discover the patio area! It faces out towards the river & above the riverwalk. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality & cost of our lunch! The hand cut corned beef on our Rueben sandwich was excellent. It was refreshing to order a sandwich and not get a bunch of carb-filled chips or fries. Very nice views, light lunch food & service here. This is our favorite place in Hastings for breakfast or lunch, especially in the summer when you can enjoy the beautiful view from the patio overlooking the Mississippi River. The food is good, especially the Reuben sandwich at lunch or the corned beef hash or biscuits and gravy at breakfast. Drinks are well-made and generous. The one downside is the speed of service. The servers are all very friendly and enthusiastic, but the kitchen is small and probably overwhelmed because the food delivery is very SLOW. Friday night fish fry is good and karaoke nights are a load of fun. Lots of locals performing and some of them are pretty good! read more

Food was good. Service - STUNK! Our server treated us like we were an inconvenience to her. It was a Monday evening. It was so-so busy and we weren't in a hurry at all. She took our drink order (ice tea) I asked her if they had artificial sweetner (can't have sugar) and a big sigh and she left... no response. She returned with 2 regular sugar packets. We were there scoping out the place for 4 other couples, we were planning to be there with next Monday. We will be changing venues!! I finally tracked her down and got 2 pink artificial sweetner packets. She took our order and told us it would probably be 45 minutes before we got our food (patty melt and an order of cheese curds). After 10 minutes our food was delivered by a guy from the bar. I had to go to the next table to borrow the ketchup - "bring it back as we will need it for our order!" Server came back and brought our check and was as sweet as could be (what changed?). Ran our card and never saw her again. Maybe brought our check because it was tip time? (sorry - sarcasm). Needless to say, our server was less than welcoming! Food good - server terrible! Ambiance was great, as we were out on the patio, overlooking the river. Flies were obnoxious, but tis the season. We'll try it again, however, not with other couples. Don't want to risk embarrassing ourselves with the terrible service! Nice, down home place where no hipster would be caught dead. I like it that way. This, along with the Bierstube, was one of my grandmother's favorite places to stop and eat at in Hastings on the way back from Sunday trips to the casino. Part of it was probably that they both have pulltabs and the gambling could continue. More than once, we were able to cover our losses at the Island and pay for our meals here. Came here today with the folks after checking out Gravity at the Hastings Cinema (the movie was not my cup of tea, but I digress). Great setting here which is smack dab on the Mississippi. I've never been a big fan of eating outdoors (flies and other insects), but they have a nice patio eating area with views of the river and the new bridge under construction. The food is good, but nothing great. Went here a couple weeks ago and saw that they have AYCE crab legs on Saturday night. Decided to make a trip back to check it out as there are not many places in the cities with AYCE crab legs. $24.99 gets you a soup or salad, two sides and unlimited crab (actually, kinda limited). Got there around five and was initially told no crab legs as there was a special menu for the car show that was going on. Got the special menus which said all you can eat crab legs from 4 to 9. Inquired again. Yes, they were available. Waitress was new and a little spacey, but very friendly. My mother ordered a Manhattan and was brought a margarita. Waitress kept coming back several times after we ordered the AYCE crab. First time back, you get a soup or salad with that. Couple minutes later, you also get two sides with that. The only side that any of us cared for much was the bacon mac'n cheese. The tater tots, the rice and the coleslaw were pretty meh. The crab is not stellar, but decent and good bang for your buck. We had three additional plates brought out after we had each finished our own individual plate. When we left around 6:30, the waitress told us they had just run out of the crab. Just two and a half hours shy of when they were supposed to go to. Drinks are dirt cheap. They were a buck a beer for twelve ounce taps (large macrobrews only). Not a place to see and be seen. At thirty *cough* *cough* years old, I was probably the youngest customer in the place by two decades. Fine by me. I'll take this scene over the scene at Bar Louie six days out of seven. read more

We decided to drive 30 miles this morning and have breakfast at the American Legion in Hastings, MN. It was a good choice, our breakfast was very good. Rachel was our server and she did a very nice job of taking care of our needs. We both as for our eggs over easy and they were done to perfections. The kitchen and wait staff is doing a great job ! We love the nightly specials, especially, burger night on Mondays. Starting at 4pm, a burger with fries is $4 with additional toppings for a small upcharge. We just stopped in for the Fish Fry on Friday and it was Excellent ! Just $9.99 for the two piece fish dinner and unlimited for $3 more. I am sure it is getting harder to run an American Legion post these days because of limited budgets and dropping membership and support. I support all of our Veterans and hope others do too. This is a friendly place for locals and visitors. Located just off the historic main street, the view of the river from patio is great in the summer or winter. Reasonable prices on food and drinks make it even better. The great service from the staff makes it a pleasure to come here as well. read more

The Legion is a great find in Hastings, tucked away behind the historic downtown, it sits right on the river. The nice sized dining room has huge windows so you have a front row seat to view the Mississippi river. Looks like they have a nice patio for the summertime, but it was -4 yesterday, so I can't even imagine that right now. I stopped in for a beer during happy hour, which, to my surprise, was only $2. Busy place, free popcorn, and most people in the bar were hitting the pulltabs hard. Just your textbook dive bar. read more

Went here last night after a movie with our son. We had noticed the AYCE crab legs a few weeks ago an decided to give it a try. When we sat down our waitress came over very promptly to get our drink order. We asked about the crab fest and she said that it wasn't available on the special menu they had for that evening. We decided to order a drink anyway and the guys ordered beers and I asked for a brandy manhattan. Drinks came out quickly but I was brought a Margarita. Our waitress quickly rectified that and I got my manhattan but it was loaded with cherry juice. The beers however were $1 - where do you see that anywhere! We asked about the menu we were given because AYCE crab legs were right there in black and white and she said she would check. When she came back it was good news - crabs were available. We had already won enough playbacks from pulltabs to keep us going for awhile so we ordered three orders of AYCE crab legs. With the crab legs you got a salad or soup and two sides. Wow that is a lot of food. But we plodded on and ordered tator tots, cole slaw, rice, and mac and chese with bacon. The mac and cheese was seriously wipe your chin crazy good. The other sides were meh. The first plate of crabs came and I ordered another manhattan but without cherry juice. It was better. The crabs were Ok/good - I'm conflicted. They brought us several more plates but my butter had congealed and I told myself I should be full. They ran out of crabs as we were leaving so if you decide to try it go early in the window - I think it's 4 to 9. By the way the view is great! I stopped here for breakfast today at about 10:00 am. It is a beautiful view of the the new bridge and overlooks the Mississippi River. I have been coming here on occasion for years and never left disappointed. I sat at the bar and ordered from Haley, I believe is both a manager and Bartender. My meal came in a very timely fashion and she was very friendly and attentive with great service. My breakfast was hot and delicious! I read reviews on this site so I also made some observations about all of the other staff here. All of the staff was friendly and courteous and I believe all of the customers were greeted upon entering. I will be going back here for another great affordable breakfast. read more
