This is a local staple that for those of us who have been around a while never forget entirely- but also may take for granted. That being said, today was our first time here in a while. It is not a fancy setting and never has been. You don't come here for booze and schmooze. You come here to lick your lips and it ends up on your hips. That's not to say they don't have some healthier options, like the delicious grilled chicken breast I had today. Hubby loves their 1/2 lb hamburger steak. It comes topped with onions and your choice of a generous portion of Heinz 57 or A1. He's an A1 and I'm a 57. Back to the amazingness that happened today...had no clue they had upped their food game. They have a list of daily vegetables on display. We always order the green beans since they are the best around. Now they have other sides. Let me tell you this- the sweet potato casserole was the kind of thing that keeps you awake wishing you could have it DoorDashed to you at midnight (yes, I just made a new verb). It was so good that after my meal, we ordered another side of it to share. It's just that melt-in-your-mouth good. Closing your eyes and making that mmmm sounds along with it. As a bonus, if you've been needing to slap someone but haven't been able to figure out how to do it- bring them here to eat with you and once you taste this casserole- problem solved! It's so good you'll seriously want to slap somebody. Bring a coworker. Your momma ain't gonna let you slap her if she is like mine was. This food is the home grown type. The biscuit served with my dinner was the best and biggest I've had in a long time. Yes, I should have taken pics but I was in the grub zone. If you're looking for a modern aesthetic and ambience, this might not be your place. That doesn't matter to me. I consider that an extra. The food quality matters most. Not super slow or super fast. Order went in at 1:43 and it was in my hand by 1:57. So I wouldn't stop here if you're in a time crunch. Everything was good with one exception: not crazy about the gravy. This little joint is in town of North Augusta, thought I would try it because of mixed reviews. It is old when you walk in but that adds to the charm of the diner.The lady at the counter was what you would expect at an old diner, she was cordial but not overly friendly which adds to the charm. This establishment has been open since 1984 so they have to be doing something right to be here for so long. Cheeseburgers are good. This place looks so cute and like one of those hidden gems where you find the best burger of your life, but it's absolutely not that. I had very high hopes for Gary's, but was disappointed basically in every way. Their burgers are bland to the extreme and not a hint of a condiment on them (to get some you have to go wait back in line). Their fries were soggy and had no salt on them. The whole point of fries is the salt!! The servers were not very friendly which is so unexpected at a place like this in the heart of north Augusta. Was in Augusta on Saturday and saw that the Gary's Hamburgers was quite busy. We've never been but my husband is always on the hunt for the best hamburger and when a place has "hamburgers" in their name that should be what they do the best so we decided to try it out. Pros: The place was clean and the staff was super friendly. You could tell it was a locals place where they probably have a lot of repeat customers who get their go-to items. A lot of the reviews were not for the burgers and the outside signs referenced breakfast and biscuits, etc. The folks inside eating seemed to know what they wanted and were enjoying what they had. Cons: The hamburger combo was about $9.50. It was fine but similar to what you would get at a school cafeteria, e.g. frozen burger patties. Went through the drive thru today and as normal food was spot on. Asked to move to the marked order waiting area. Food was brought out to me in a timely manner. Million ketchups and no napkins. But kicker was that I was charged 3.99% to use my credit card. When I asked the lady about it she told me everyone is doing it. That is not true and a bland statement. I don't even like writing reviews but my experience was so horrible that I have to write a review and will never be going back as long as they have the same manager. I love and brag about Gary's chicken biscuits and have been going for a long time. This review is not about the food, but the customer service. The manager was so rude and disrespectful and would not just admit that she messed up by throwing away the biscuits (which I saw with my own eyes) before fulfilling all the breakfast orders. I waited patiently for at least 20 mins watching several people that ordered after me get their order and then was offered a bun. When I said I didn't want a bun, I was told that they had to fulfill orders before me which was a lie and also knowing the biscuits had gotten thrown away. When the employee who took my order tried explaining that I had been there for a while, she still didn't want to listen and tried to offer me a biscuit from an order that had been sitting there leftover. I agreed but said can I get my money back too and was told no and that it was my fault for refusing a bun. I explained that all she had to do was just admit that she messed up and was wrong instead of trying to justify a simple mistake, but she continued to argue with me. So, I got my money back and will never be going back. Its sad because Gary's breakfast is one of my favorites and I was really looking forward to it this morning. read more

Decent food, friendly staff, decent location located in downtown NA, nice stop in the area.

We came as a five person group and were promptly served by the attentive staff. We had a fairly large order of burgers, fries and tenders, everything came out quickly and was cooked to perfection. Chicken tender breading is among the top recipes we had ever tasted, and the burgers were cooked and served to perfection. We did wish the onion ring basket came with a few more than 5-7 for the price, but they were delicious and the issue was remedied with a second order. The cheese was melted so it lets me know it was on the grill. However the burger wasn't juicy, it was dry. Some might say Gary's is better than five guys. But in my opinion they are NOT. I also ordered the Philly with everything on it, the veggies were not well chopped and there was not a taste of salt and pepper in site!! I have seen this place many times in passing (the Washington rd location) and was always curious as to the awesomeness of their food....Let me just say some things are better left a mystery! I see why curiosity killed the cat, if it ate what I ate at the Gary's or the old musty dirty water type smell inside killed it... I ordered a burger with no onions, (look at the pics for proof) and was served a burger with onions...so glad I'm not allergic...I just didn't want onion breath. The cheese sticks I ordered clearly looked as if the were only half fried and didnt do the cheesy pull thing when I bit I to them. And speaking of bites, they tasted like they suffered a bad case of freezer burn as well. The sauce was horrible I thought it was marinara but instead was plan old tomato sauce...such a disappointment. If you have a craving for some good ol' home cooked southern breakfast made with care then Gary's is your place. I am particular about my grits and Gary's does not disappoint. The grits are smooth(not Cream of Wheat smooth) and have just the right amount of texture and consistency not to be watered down or have that gritty taste (no pun intended). In one week I managed to dine at Gary's 3 times. Only once at the N. Augusta location. It was my 2nd Gary's meal, but first breakfast. I'd been craving a biscuit, so after a great run I decided to treat myself. A plain butter biscuit is to me a "food standard". You order them and can see how a place measures up to the competition. I had a side of bacon just for good measure. Both my biscuit and bacon were delicious. A bit crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Not overly salty or tainted with the flavor of baking powder. It was a nice day so I dined outside. The restaurant and facilities were clean and staff was friendly. I knew that it would not be my last Gary's breakfast and that driving past any Gary's when the biscuit craving hit next time would be very tough! read more

Wow! I wasn't expecting an awesome burger like the one I just had. I had a bacon double cheeseburger. My only complaint is it's a little messy. The bun couldn't keep up. But it tasted fantastic.
