First time trying this track on the Oakland/San Leandro border, literally right next to the…read moreairport. Planes fly so close that you can feel their speed and power. Total links style, meaning almost no trees in play, just a big blob of grassy space, but littered with bunkers and a few creek hazards. I'm usually not a big fan of links style golf, but if I get acquainted with one, then one can grow on me, like neighboring Monarch Bay. For a first timer it is just incredibly hard to know where to aim your shot. I ended up in a hazard multiple times after executing a nice shot, to find out 200+ yards later that my ball is either in a sand bunker or worse in a creek/marshland area that I couldn't see from the tee box. Then add stiff winds cuz its such an open space, then it just makes for a really long round. For some reason I did much better on the front 9, then on the back I got killed. The back 9 here is significantly harder, it's almost like 2 different skill levels. I do like the driving range here, as they have real grass, which is super rare these days. I also liked their golf carts, clean, modern and fast. They also have super great deals for seniors, like free golf carts so that's almost a $20 savings from a regular dude. I'm not quite a senior yet so 3 stars for now. When my rate drops to that awesome rate, I'll bump them up for an awesome value. But for now, I'll remain a golfer who gets a penalizing score yet also has to pay a premium. Such is life. But I'll try and give another swing here before summer ends. Round 2 *ding ding*

We walked in and I asked the guy in the pro shop if they rent clubs. He yelled, actually yelled, back at me asking me what did I want. I was taken aback because I was genuinely confused by his animosity. I hadn't been in the shop for more than one minute. I'm repeated my question with an explanation. I said do you rent clubs for people who don't have their own. He yelled louder this time throwing up his hands in exasperation. I realized it wasn't a misunderstanding-for some reason, I just wasn't welcome. My friend and I left the shop and walked around for a bit before leaving just five minutes after we arrived. I wouldn't give this place my business if they gifted me a set of clubs.

The road to the golf course is beautiful with trees on both sides. I always walk with my golf cart, but booking online it only had the option with cart. I was glad that they forced us to pay for the golf cart, BTW, when you book online the night before, you have to pay for the tee time non refundable with a credit card. If you want to walk which is a little difficult and slow due to many hilly fairways, you must call the pro shop to book. I didn't see anyone walking on last Friday. There are 2 courses on this establishment, there's one 9 holes and one 18 holes. The check-in pro shop is across from the cart return area, hard to see, a small house, may be it's still in renovation? The driving range is right next to it. BTW, it's a little difficult to find a parking spot close to the pro shop, the best is to park, then check in to get a cart and go to the car to get the clubs. Anyhow, the first hole is right there at the golf carts. I could see the hill already. It's beautiful. The fairways are very well kept, plenty of grass but many bushes on the sides, easy to lose balls if they went in there. Many fairways are quite narrow, and a few that have flags up in the hills to guide people for teeing off due to blind fairways. The greens were just aerated a few weeks, still very thick and spotty but puttable. Many greens are quite small although some are big. I like number 9 par 3 on the top hitting to the bottom of the hill, beautiful but quite challenging. The 18 hole is amazing, par 6 and so vast, long, hilly, and beautiful. Love this hole. Most of the holes have wonderful views of the valleys, canyons, I love the scenery. Ah, at the end of the 11th hole, the BBQ grills smelled so good that I had to order the Cheese Burger and believe it or not it's the best $13 cheese burger anywhere at any price. The young lady did it so well, so perfect and I even had a bag of chips to go with it. She deserved a great tip. The prices on weekdays are quite reasonable, for Senior like me, only $43 including cart which is inexpensive. Yes, I'll come back here again and shoot a better score than the first one due to not being familiar with the golf course.

Note: booking times get taken up fast from what I've seen so if you see a time, make sure to book it ASAP! There are a lot of selection time slots, but I've seen them get taken up, normally the earlier slots as soon as they become available. The holes here have always been great to me, and bring great value, especially the monstrous Par 6 at the end, never a dull moment when trying to get on the green from a bad drive. I also say the best part is the turn at the 10 with the fresh burgers, links and beer ready for you as soon as you finish up the hole, come on down here if you're looking for a great tee time and experience!

The membership pricing is a good deal from the local spots weve been to.The facilities are fairly clean and they have a restraunt on site called the Overlook. We ended up grabbing some burgers and fries from there. Pretty solid food. Two burgers and an order of fries and tip came to $50. The course is definitely not for beginners. I had a hard time hitting from even the junior's section so i sorta gave up. Apart from that though my biggest complaint would be for the way they upcharge. They didn't honor afternoon pricing and tried to upcharge on the golf cart. It was ~$76 for me (non-member) and ~$52 for my husband (member) for a Saturday afternoon tee time plus another $40 ($36 for members) for the cart rental. Unfortunately, I didn't even end up playing because the course was too hard for me so it was a waste of money for me to just sit in the cart. The other downside was that it took 6.5 hours to get through this course because of all the wait times. It should've been less than 4 hours. So i wasn't much of a happy camper in the cold. Lesson learned- wear more layers. We still come back for the driving range. I may send my husband off to play on the course until I can get better at hitting the distance. Tom was super helpful. He recommended wide shoes and also helped measure my shoe size since it can be different for wide shoes, and it totally was. The shoes were reasonably priced and comparable to anything you can find online. But you can't beat a personalized shopping experience with Tom, who helped explain what different brands offer shoe-wise and also measured my feet to be sure. Tom is a true gem and it's always awesome to support a local business with owners like him who have a true passion for what they do. He used to own a bigger store downstairs but during the pandemic, his business suffered and now he's upstairs but still clearly knows all of his tennis stuff. I would definitely come back to support his business whenever I need tennis gear. The only downside is that parking is street parking and you do have to pay for it.

Through Yelp, we found Montclair Sports offered restringing services and I am beyond satisfied with my experience working with Tom. To start, Tom is a seasoned professional in his craft, with over 50 years of experience. We brought over our two beaten up rackets to the shop and Tom walked us through his recommendations for the rackets. We ended up going forward with restringing only one of the rackets, but we actually purchased a new Babolat racket there on the spot. Turns out, the racket my wife had been using her whole life was completely the wrong size! At no time during the racket shopping process did we ever feel like Tom was trying to upsell us. He patiently answered all our questions and I trusted Tom's guidance in every step of the process. Honestly, you won't find a nicer guy in the business; I cannot recommend his services enough.
