To be a true fan of the Garrick's Head, it helps to spell it correctly and so that is where I am left...a true fan. I have been a regular and an irregular of the Garrick's Head since I moved to Victoria many years ago. There's a reason it's still around amongst those other three "updated" places that opened in recent years. Sure one could say it's their overflow, but I prefer to think it's the dependability. The Garrick's Head has made very few changes, including the decor. Where they lack in fancy light fixtures they make up for in the bar staff. They always have a fun charm and actually welcome you. They come around often and seldom let a pint sit empty at your table. This is what I like. The stuffy places can keep their high maintenance girls, I'll take a pint of cider in less than two minutes anytime. The food is where the last star went. Frankly, a pub is not where I seek fine dining so I know exactly what I'm getting. But where the Garrick's fails is they've been trying too hard lately, but I've long since forgiven them, and so should everyone else. There's a lot of pressure across the square and I can't blame the owners for trying. My whole point is, if you just want to sit and enjoy a pint, maybe catch part of the game and just catch up with a book or an old friend the Garrick's Head is the perfect place. read more

On a beautiful day in Victoria, new to the land, I found this gem for lunch. The special was very filling. It consisted of a burger, half order of fries, and half salad, with a pint o beer. All for 12.50. BOOM. Sold. The waitress and bar guy were very nice and I had great conversations with both. I sat out on the patio and people watched as I ate. This place gets it. read more

I thought you should know I was at your pub tonight with 3 of my friends and we received terribly disappointing service. I We started with one waiter and never saw him again, so we had to ask another waitress to please take our order. Just after receiving my beer it was accidentally knocked over, spilled everywhere and the glass broke. None of your staff came to help, we had to hunt down paper towel and cleaned up the mess ourselves. After we finally got the waitresses attention about what happened, she was no help. I wasn't even offered a new drink and had to wait 10 minutes till she came back around I ordered another. To make matters worse I was charged for the spilt beer. We asked for our bills (which totalled over $120 combined) and then sat waiting for another 20 minutes to pay. At which time your waitress gave a lame excuse of only having 2 staff on. Normally I would feel bad for someone in that situation but she didn't even stop by our table to say she was trying to get to us. We go out every Monday and normally to Milestones but this time I pushed the girls to change and go to your pub. What an embarrassing mistake. I guess we'll be looking for a new place to go on Monday's. read more

Always full at dinner time in the Summer, so try to get there early, especially if there's a game on. The last time I went to the Garrich's Head, I had the beef dip sandwich. It was HUGE and very tasty. Friendly, attentive staff make the general feeling in the Garrich's Head a good one. The menu is typical pub fare, the beer list carries local brewery's, and the outdoor patio is an excellent place to sit and chat on a hot Summer night. read more

We went during the day when the crowds were light...actually non-existent. While you would never guess it, had the most delicious hummus plate for lunch. Really, really good. Paired it with a nice beer I don't recall (they don't carry Lighthouse Lager for some reason). Left very happy. I remember the waiter being a cutey. But boys in Canada usually are :) read more

Took a cruise to Alaska and stopped in Victoria on the way back. Went in to Garrick's and were greeted by a very unfriendly waitress who seemed to be in a bad mood. No smiles etc. We were trying to ask questions about the menu when she said, "You guys are too much and unless you can quiet down I am going to have to ask you to leave." Really, she could have handled the situation in a number of different ways. I will never go back and will tell my friends to stay away. She was also trying to decide our order for us. Good for beers .... Not good for wine .... The service was very good!!.. They changed my wine as I didn't like it, without any problem... But even then, it was still not good... At the end.. This pub is really fun for groups. They have some huge wooden tables perfect for socializing. Also, their bartenders are really funny and friendly, and provide attentive service. I had a long island iced tea here and the bartender made it really well. Overall, I had a fun evening at this pub and would recommend it to people who want a relaxed atmosphere and a well-made drink. read more

Food was very good and definitely a cut above pub food in the U.S. We had wings cooked to perfection and the chicken was moist and tasty, not like the frozen dried leathery kind that I have gotten so used to. Raw vegies were fresh and tasty. Fried shrimp was served witout a drip of oil. Falafel wrap delicious. Fries, sliced spuds with skin. I had Kalaidescope Ales to drink and they were flavorful without heaviness and produced a wallop. Highly recommend the balcony seating. read more

This was a fantastic find. We came in for lunch as this looked a little less corporate and touristy than the other pubs nearby. We were very pleasantly surprised. The beer selection is huge with some local and some big name breweries on tap. The food was packed with flavor and eye pleading presentation. There was a lot of food on the plate, almost too much, but it wasn't loaded with filler. The sandwiches came with fries and a real salad, not the usual moldy piece of lettuce. We tried the yam fries and the beer battered ones and both were the best we've had in a while. Lastly the service was friendly, unintrusive but helpful. Just moved to Victoria from Toronto and I find this place to be as good as some of my favourites back there. Excellent / very large selection of craft beer on tap, which seems to rotate often. On a recent business trip to Vic, I stopped in here for lunch and had a great experience. The wait staff were knowledgeable and friendly, prices were on par with similar establishments, and the fish and chips were fantastic. The pub was alright, the waitress was the worst I have ever seen. Out of nowhere she was treating us badly, asking us to leave before close time and counting the minutes. I am never coming back to this place. We had a really bad time. read more

The Garricks head is and should be known for it's beer. They also have pretty good food I wouldn't recommend going there for dinner. If you want your food to be cooked properly and your service to be good, go for lunch. If you go for anything but a beer at night you will be disappointed with slow service and inaccurate orders. You can tell the employees all get a long well because they spend most of the night at the end of the bar chatting while customers patiently wait for service. I have had more than a few bad experiences there recently and it's unfortunate. My wife and I used to go there once a week for dinner and drinks, now we go for just a beer once in a while. It used to be our favourite pub in town now it's a place to go when we want to try something new on tap. I really hope they get they get their shit together soon. read more

While walking around downtown Vic we found this pub. The building is very cool, the outdoor seating was a little aways down from the main entrance and isolated from the Main Street (government?) I am a land locked sea food lover and was so looking forwards to the chowder. Couldn't find a place who does their chowder in a bread bowl so I settled for a hunk of French bread on the side. When my chowder came out the presentation was a bit sloppy. The edges weren't cleaned off and the splatters from the soup being poured were all along the wide rim of the bowl. The kitchen also decided to throw on some paprika power perhaps (not 100% sure) on top of the soup. Seemed more of an sloppy afterthought. I was willing to over look the presentation if the soup rocked my world but it came up flat much to my disappointment the chowder was lacking flavor! Even after adding salt there was nothing to make my taste buds sing. Not to mention there was a sour aftertaste that made me think something in the soup was spoiled. The soup was also Luke warm idk if that's their serving temperature or what. The biggest disappointment was the bread I love nothing more than a good hunk of hard bread that tears the shit out of the roof of your mouth. "If I ain't bleeding it ain't worth eatin " I always say. The French bread they have paired with the chowder is a semi hard crust with a soft fluffy inside. I nearly wanted to cry I'm sure not everyone loves their chowder with hard bread but people you're all missing out on the pain and pleasure. All in all I can't give this establishment my yelp blessing, but I do look forwards to visiting again soon and having my mind changed. read more

It's a great little pub. A bit on the smallish side, but also cozy and friendly. They have a real fireplace inside for the winter, and some patio seating for the summer. A good mix of people - locals, tourists, university students. During hockey season they always have games on the t.v.(s). Food tends to be typical pub grub, which doesn't stand out from every other pub. read more

A fine option for a drink downtown, but a warning for those who are looking for cider (rather than beer): their options are limited to Strongbow and Hornsby, and the Hornsby is the green apple kind, which is very, very sweet. There are other nearby spots that serve local, Vancouver Island ciders, if that's more your taste. read more

Whenever I get out to Victoria I always make sure I go to this pub the bartenders Mark and Chris are spectacular and really take care of their clientele. The oldest pub in Victoria, amazing history in it, but clean and modern. The original owner is still rumored to visit. great selection of taps. Some craft beers are hard to find anyways, but to come and find them in pints is like a little slice of heaven. love the pickles. staff is always friendly and professional, even when they are super busy. Good place to catch sports. It maybe isn't as fancy as some of the other pubs on Government St., but sometimes all you need is a beer and the game in an awesome space. read more
