Sooo great beer selection here, but what killed me was the service. The bartender was not nice and was slow. Maybe I got unlucky and she was having a bad night... but either way not a great experience because of that. She never greeted us when we sat down even though she saw us. When she finally came over we asked her for recommendations and she was literally useless. I've bartended for a few years and that was just sad. We didn't stay long because of it. Quick service on 2 visits when we explained we were on a short lunch. Happy chatter gave it a great vibe. It's quite clean and bright - lots of windows bring in natural light. Visited this pub during "Canada Day", and while it was crowded, we were able to get an outside table without any problem. Lots of beer on tap, and the special rotates every day. We had the Poutine with bacon and the pub made pot pie. Both were amazing. The fries are batter dipped, covered in gravy, cheese curds and bacon, and the pot pie is homemade with big chunks of steak, and comes on top of homemade mashed potatoes- real comfort food! We came here upon arriving in Victoria; unable to check into our hotel yet. Something about it was very "University", but that may have been just because the crowd was college age. That wouldn't present a problem but it did seem very loud. As in, we couldn't hear ourselves talk because everyone around us was so boisterous. Or maybe it was the acoustics in the restaurant. I got the Poutine (fries topped with cheese curds and beef gravy) out of sheer curiosity. They were really good (If you love cheese you will love this) but $9.25 was a bit steep for fries, even if they are covered in cheese. I also ordered a large beer. At one point, the music level rose (I think there was a live band somewhere) so we decided to leave because we were there to visit and couldn't do that. All in all, I think if you are a college kid, this would be your place. We aren't, and so we didn't stay long, but we did appreciate the service and vibe. Just an all around great place to visit late night to try their great selection of beers, all at reasonable prices. The bartender was particularly nice with a wonderful Irish (?) accent. He made us feel at home, even though it was pretty obvious that we were tourists. He even didn't ask for money right away after handing us our drinks, which showed that he had complete trust in us. We had to alert him that we were ready to pay 15 minutes later, which was pretty cool to experience. We will definitely visit this place again the next time we head to Victoria. read more

I'm going to start with the bad news. My fiancee and I clearly came in at a bad time. It seemed like someone had either underestimated the December 21st lunchtime demand and didn't schedule enough staff or someone was a no-show for their shift. We weren't even given menus for at least 5 minutes and our server was clearly overwhelmed. Kudos to Corey for busting his butt! You may be reading my first paragraph and questioning my sanity. "How can he complain about the service and still give this place 4 stars??? He CRAYZAY!" No I'm not. The menu was well inspired, the beer list long, and the prices appropriate. My fiancee ordered the Lemongrass Tuna Melt w/ Creole Turkey & Rice Soup (daily special) and I ordered the Ginger Soy Pork Burger. I will start with my finacee's lunch. The tuna melt was unlike any tuna melt I've ever enjoyed; the lemongrass added a tangy zip (just like Miracle Whip LOL!) to the melt, and the CHEESE (OMG the CHEESE!!) was thick and quality! The soup was delicious; it was spicy, had a good blend of sour cream to soup, and was full of rice and turkey! Now to my lunch. First I have to say, a pork burger: who knew?!!? The pork was the perfect vehicle to deliver the sweet thai chili sauce to my mouth. This burger reignited my love of a good burger. It was like nothing I've ever had before! The french fries were hot and just salty enough to balance the sweetness of the burger. The side salad was delicious (loved the shredded beets!), but was slightly over-dressed; the dressing could've used a touch less balsamic vinegar. Overall, The Garrick's Head is a great place for a relaxed lunch or dinner. With so many Anglo-European style pubs around, the GH has stepped up the wow factor in their menu and built a stylish, focussed beer list that any BC beer-lover would love to drink his way through. read more

As restaurants go Garrick's Head won't be winning any beauty contests. It is a dive, dive, dive... BUT!!!! It's dill battered fish and chips with crusty fries are worth all the I feel dirty, need to wash my hands constantly, perhaps take a full body shower now that I have just sat down here feelings that this place can bring out. Big TVs showing sports shine from the walls and you can mistake the TV watching of the cook as some serious stalker like staring if you are seated at the right (or wrong) table... 3 beautiful meals and 1 ick, followed by meh... Let's start with, I had the opportunity to taste the meals of the other three in my party. Wow! Super tasty bangers and mash, and seared pork belly. Beer cheese soup was far too thin for my preference, but had generally good flavor. Our server was great, while also very busy. She was quick and stayed in touch throughout, even warning us about the kitchen lag and keeping us supplied with beverages and updates.. I ordered the putanesca off the specials menu. It arrived looking more like canned pasta than a fresh meal, but I attributed that to the unusual pasta choice and over thick sauce. One bite and I was out. I LOVE a good Putanesca. This was anything but. Replaced with the Shepard's Pie.... Bland and the meat was ground and cook to a paste like texture instead of having any good body to it. I ate less than half of it, and the roll with butter (the roll was also unusually good. I should have had bangers and mash with the surprisingly well spiced bangers and excellent flavorful gravy. We would all go back, as I said, 3 out of 4 is good. And the service made up for other issues. read more

I liked this place a lot. Just about the only 'normal' pub/restaurant I found in Victoria. The service here was great, the food was very good, the portions were huge, and they have a very good beer selection. All for about the most reasonable prices I found in Victoria. Why only three stars, then? Because their yam fries, while tasty, turned my stomach in knots for the next 24 hours. If I hadn't indulged in the fires, I think this place would easily get four stars. read more

Unless you are in the habit of bombing your gut with grease and have built up the excess stomach bile needed to handle it, you may end up wanting to vomit for 45 minutes post meal as I did (Fish and Chips, I'm looking at you). Was looking for a proper craft beer selection somewhere after dinner and this place nailed it. I was able to try a bunch of different local Vancouver beers as well as introduce a couple coworkers to the finer side of real beer. The draft list and the service was excellent here, waitress was completely cool and she impressed me with her beer knowledge. Can't say anything about the food as we only came for drinks. Est 1867 - this bar has Character. I've been coming here for over ten years & many more to come, no doubt. Pub fare is elevated to a higher standard while retaining affordability & great flavours. Had a great dinner at the Garrick's Head. We had a large group (7), and I tried to call ahead. Learned that they do not accept reservations after 3pm on Friday and Saturday. Had no problem getting in and finding a large enough table for us all. The food was delicious. Had the vegan burger, and it was great. I do wish they had more than the one vegan option. Atmosphere was fun and lively, and the location is great. Restrooms were clean but a little small. Would return. read more

So the first time we were ever in Victoria we stopped in for a snack and a drink to get out of the rain. The roaring fire really sold us on that. I had fish and chips and a whiskey! It was awesome. This is a very nice pub in a great part of Victoria. The pub itself is a great place to hang out - lots of natural light, nice views of the surrounding architecture, and a fantastically long and comfortable bar to sit up at. The staff were very friendly and laidback. There are 55+ beers on tap here, and they seemed to carry almost every local craft beer available. More importantly, they served it well - perfectly cold and in proper pint glasses. The specials - choices from Philips and Vancouver Island Brewery - were on at $6 including tax, which was a good deal. The food was also great - I had a chicken burger for about $13, which came with perfectly cooked fries and was nicely presented. It wasn't AMAZING, but it was certainly above average. And with a perfectly poured beer to wash it down, who can complain? A great pub for relaxing on a weekend afternoon. I hope to return. read more

Yum. Ate here twice in the two days we spent in Victoria. I don't usually go back to the same place for dinner twice while vacationing and yet, there we were...drawn back by the great service, delicious food (shepherds pie, fish and chips and sticky date pudding were all delicious). Prices were slightly more reasonable here than at other pubs. They have a summer ale called Sunsetter on tap that has a fantastic peach note I couldn't get enough of... Garrick's is also on the list of supposedly haunted historical places. Talented buskers perform right outside the door, so the area feels vibrant and lively! Liked it a lot! read more

This place has great service and what looks to be twenty beers on tap! Plus the locals were very friendly. they say it's supposed to be haunted because way back in the day the court house was across the street and they would bring the inmates here for a final meal and drink before they hung them in the square. Finally the bar tender was awesome! He let us taste almost every beer before we ordered our pints (20oz pints by the way) and the people here are beautiful to look at! Pleasantly surprised by this place on a recent trip up to BC. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but food was solid! I had the chicken burger and BF had the beef burger- both really tasty and came with both hot battered fries and a lightly dressed fresh salad. Better beer selection than most places we checked out the menus at- good local selection. Lifesaver on a hot day. Service was pleasant, patio seating was ample. My family and I went together on our first day of our vacation in Victoria. It was winter so it was cold but it was nice to sit in the heated pub. However, don't sit by the door if you can help it because the pub is popular enough to create a pretty nasty and consistent draft from people entering and exiting (obviously only an issue in the winter). Everybody really enjoyed the food and the waitress was so helpful! I'd never had a tuna burger before but the waitress said go for it and I'm glad I did. Genius combination, but the salad was a little awkwardly presented. Overall, we really liked this place. read more

My wife and I have been staying at the Bedford Regency Hotel for years when we come to Victoria. We were there again over the (US) Thanksgiving holiday. The main attraction is the Garrick's Head. Despite the many changes and upgrades, the pub food has maintained its quality over the years. I have never been unhappy with their fare, but the shepherds' pie and fish & chips are to die for. They also have an incredible selection of local craft brews. If you like the livelier side of things, the newer section up front with the taps is your place. if you want a more relaxed talk to friends and watch hockey area, the older section is your place to be. We especially appreciate the tables on either side of the fireplace. Stop in for a glass or two and a meal. You will not be disappointed. read more

The wait staff seem disinterested in providing any service. The food is average, what you'd expect from a pub - greasy, typically deep fried, average taste. Not the best for a date night but good for something quick. The location is ideal, heart of Downtown Victoria close to anywhere you'd want to go. The staff are what really let's the place sink so low for me, they are slow, disinterested, and seem to act as though they are doing you a favour by serving you. read more

Our cruise had a bit of a weird schedule - we had spent three full days in Alaska, and were only in Victoria for about four hours on the last evening of our cruise before returning to Seattle early the next morning. We hadn't planned much to do in Victoria - Butchart Gardens and most other attractions were closed, so we just stopped into the Garrick's Head for drinks. We are definite craft beer geeks, and really enjoyed the chance to try a variety of local beers. I had the Hoyne Brewing Dark Matter, which was a lager with a really interesting coffee/roasted flavor - liked it a lot. This is definitely a fun place to stop in Victoria. read more

Awful staff I would never return. Got laughed at when I asked for something with blackcurrant cordial in. "We're not that up market" she said. A $2 bottle of cordial would make you upmarket? The waitress was the colder than winter in the Yukon, miserable as could be. read more
