We love our locally-owned Ace in town. The store is well-stocked and easy to navigate. I stopped in recently for some pest control supplies. And of course I had to browse their dog toys and treats (I'll be back for a dog shampoo restock soon!). And I can't resist a visit to their Yeti wall/section. This location has an indoor plant section and a bunch of outdoor plants...and an adjoining home decor/gift boutique. But what really makes this store so special is the customer service. Every staff I encounter on every visit is friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. It has a true community feel. I'm thankful to have this option so near to us, and will continue to support this awesome local business. read more

Walking in to two of the "greeters" arguing was a good start to my short and frustrating visit. I was then sent to the "helpful hub" to get information about re screening some windows. I then interrupted the associate from his much need at work phone time. He didn't say hi, he didn't ask if he could help me. He stared at me begrudgingly and waited for me to ask my very apparently annoying question. He was so rude and unhelpful. I was online looking for a company that cuts and programs auto keys after having lost my spare & I stumbled across this Ace location. As soon as I walked in, I noticed three Ace employees standing at the endcaps right at the entrance, i was instantly greeted me and asked if they could help me find something. Luckily, the key department was right next to them, so I was helped right away. The entire process from cutting & programming the key took about 35 minutes and the entire time that I waited at the counter, I noticed that every single person that walked through the door was greeted and asked if they needed help finding something. You walk in with hope, you walk out with a random lightbulb, three unnecessary extension cords, and an existential crisis. Now let's talk about the real MVP: Garrett Hardware. This place isn't just a hardware store--it's a hardware haven. It's what I imagine heaven looks like for people who know what a flange coupling is (and for those of us who pretend we do). From the moment you walk in, the vibe is totally different. Warm. Welcoming. There's no ominous forklift beeping in the distance or a teenager pretending to be busy stacking PVC pipes while avoiding eye contact. No, at Garrett Hardware, the staff greets you like they've been expecting you, like you're the long-lost hero of DIY projects and they're your friendly sidekicks. Meanwhile, back at Home Depot, I once got lost in the lumber aisle for so long I started naming the planks. Garrett Hardware would've had me in and out in five minutes, with everything I needed and a healthy sense of accomplishment. This is a hardware store/high end home decor/ nursery and gift store. Their nursery had really health plants and some that I can't find elsewhere. The real treat was the Home store near the Nursery. What a lovely little shop. Very high end bedding, kitchen store. Their silk flowers were the best I've seen. They had all sorts of kitchen gadgets. The dishes, placemats, and tablecloths were gorgeous. The bedding was luxurious. I wanted to buy everything they had on the bed display. They also had an impressive wall display with candles, soaps, lotions, room sprays. It was a pleasure to shop and enjoy the environment of this well stocked store. I highly recommend. Have visited a few times and like the place for the kitchenware / housewares selection. Have bought several items that you don't find at overpriced Williams-Sonoma or Sur la Table. Sales folks are always friendly and helpful. Store has a nice small town authentic vibe. Feels real. If I lived in Healdsburg I would never go to Home Depot in Santa Rosa. Prices here are a bit high compared to a big box store but that isn't my major complaint. The real issue pertains to the store associates that work at this store. They hire a lot of older senior citizen age guys with know it all attitudes. I understand some of them may have worked in the construction industry in some capacity in the past but they take it to an arrogant level and refuse to listen to customers. In turn this arrogance makes any knowledge they may have accumulated in some prior career and throws it out the window. I have never met one of the older guys who work at this store that doesn't fit this mold unfortunately. I will however give one star to the other staff members which seem to be competent and do their jobs appropriately. The reason I will never shop at this store again is because they hire a lot of people who fit the negative description I spoke about. Unless it's an emergency you are much better off going to Windsor to the HD. read more

Garrett Ace is the Place for your HONEST, helpful hardware store! After getting great service with a handful of hardware and household cleaners I left my wallet behind and headed home to San Diego! Garret staff took the time to track me down (via a AAA card-thanks also to AAA) and mailed my wallet to me at their expense! In addition to having a wide range of goods and services, knowledgeable staff with a great service attitude this store clearly places great value in integrity and service. I love Garrett Ace Hardware in Healdsburg. Sometimes I go there just to hang out and walk around. My daughter loves to visit the parakeets and parrots. What really sets this place apart are the employees - they seem to be mostly working or retired industry experts - carpenters, plumbers, painters, gardeners - and could not be more helpful to someone that is less-than-DIY. Just this weekend, Jim walked me through the differences between all of the lightbulbs. Who knew there was so much that went into a basic lightbulb! And Joey helped me figure out how to get a door to properly shut in my house... just by my describing the problem, without him ever seeing it. My hinge was loose due to a stripped nail and I was going to get bigger screws (following some YouTube advice) and he walked me through how that can actually do damage to the wall. Instead, he recommended buying $1 toothpicks and shoving them in there with some wood glue and then putting the same screws back in once it set. Voila! I have had great customer service here. They are always very helpful and have cook things I rarely see at other stores you just have to look around a bit. I don't recommend buying from this store because they take horrible care of the animals they call their "Pets" if you look in to the cages of both birds the water is disgusting, the cages are dirty, they have no toys, the have cloth houses that are frayed and the birds are chewing on them witch can lead to impaction witch will result in a sad death. It's funny that they sold almost all of their birds but the ones that everyone loves stayed there instead of going to a loving home. I've never seen ANY of the "Pets" with toys that went either disgusting or dangerous. I've seen many employees just walk on by when cages need cleaning or water needs replenishing. I as a individual have complained to them about their care they got them new cages soon after. I'm not saying to not buy from there but please if something seams off let an employee know the more we can so the better. By the way this review was written by a twelve year old :). I want to give a shout out to Tim in the service department. I lost the key to my firebox and needed to get my passport out asap. I felt bad because it was almost closing time but Tim enthusiastically took the box, drilled it open and installed a new lock in about 15 minutes time. AMAZING! Such a streamlined efficient store with everything one would expect from a hardware store--and then some. With so much trepidation and difficulty, while on vacation I was searching for both a charger and something t husband needed to set up a memory stick thing for his computer and television ... e were having a hard time finding this, but here we got everything we wanted. The convenience of the location, a stones throw from our hotel the town square, this was awesome. A solidly equipped hardware store is something we don't think much about--unless ask a sudden we need something and need it ASAP. These guys were really great on the phone when I called looking for iKN-95 masks. No one else seem to have them. When I got there they only had a 10 pack for $45 and I did not want to spend that much so I spoke with a sales associate who was new and he helped me. He could not find a smaller pack so he asked the manager and the manager asked at the checkout and lo and behold they had single packs for 4.50 each which I was happy to purchase a couple of those. read more

They aren't the cheapest place to get things, but I had a really positive experience here last week. I decided to buy my BF a smoker for Valentine's day. First I called and got in touch with a lady in Patio, who actually KNEW what she was talking about. She found what I was looking for, pulled it, and held it for me. When I arrived about an hour later, she was friendly, helpful and showed me a few other things I may want/need to go with it - there was no pressure at all to buy anything and the information she gave me was very valuable. Garrett Hardware in Healdsburg is rather unique. It has all the qualities of a local home-town hardware store. What's a home-town hardware store? It is one that has the items that are unique to that area. Wine making supplies, plumbing supplies that are commonly used by people who have livestock and water storage systems that are found around this area of Sonoma County. They have a nice selection of canning supplies and a "country store" with unique items coveted by the "back to the farm" crowd. I also see that they have ammunition for most of the commonly used firearms. I have yet to go to Garrett's hardware store and not find what I wanted. The people who work there seem happy and are always helpful when I cannot find things. Today, I see they are expanding their garden section. That store has been growing like a teenager for the last 5 years. The selections grow also. I'm usually busy, so I do not stroll around Garrett's looking at the stuff, but when I have in the past, I always learn something or get an idea. "Oh", I think, "they got that stuff? Nice to know!" Lastly, how could anyone not give 5 stars to a store that has a big fat cat that roams around the place like it owns it? Come to think of it, I've loved every store that had a cat. read more

I've always had the philosophy, "If Ace doesn't have it, you don't need it!" I know that there is a lot of controversy about the big box stores running out the small family businesses, but sometimes the big stores don't necessarily have the items I'm looking for either. I stopped in yesterday to pick up some garden soil and everyone was very friendly. I've never had a problem with staffing as there is always someone around to help I'm a local, and in light of the rising gas prices, I tend to stick closer to home unless I have lots of shopping to do. When I don't want to drive anywhere I just have to have something, I go to Garretts. They always have what I am looking for, and if they don't have it, then I don't need it.. I especially like their Country Store. They always have great gift ideas and I tend to forget about them because I don't like to shop that much. I know they have higher prices, but if they save me time and gas from having to go into Santa Rosa, then why not stay local and shop local. read more

A bunch of old guys that stand around and talk about how much they think they know. Nearly always condescending and typically not very helpful as they give flamboyant advice without knowing the project specs. They know where the products are but usually aren't very knowledgeable though they're very good at talking over you to make you feel as if you don't understand your own project....it's fine, it's just a hardware store...but it's an annoying place to go for a hammer or some putty. We were very fortunate to be assisted by an employee there named Jimmy. He was courteous, patient. and informative. Superior Customer Service I straggled into Garrett Ace Hardware in Healdsburg, dazed and confused (as I usually am in a hardware store) and asked about a fuel canister for my kitchen torch. Happily, I encountered Dean. He knew what crème brûlée is. "My daughter is a pastry chef," He explained. "And i used to have a restaurant."I knew I was in good hands. He not only took me to the right section of the store, but plugged in the canister to make sure that my kitchen torch was working. And shared a recipe from his childhood, that also requires a kitchen torch. When was the last time anyone in Home Depot even tried to help? Let alone with this degree of customer service? I always go to Garrett's for my home improvement/craft needs. The employees are nice (and there are lots of them available to help customers) and I love going in to see the cats. :) Today, I had the absolute best experience ever and I felt compelled to share. My partner and I are planning a wedding. We have a few projects that we need to build and they are pretty complicated as far as parts and measurements. Rich and the other lumber yard employee (forget his name) were SO nice and helpful, despite our weird requests. They did everything with a smile and -sometimes- a joke. They helped us figure a few things out as well and made extra effort to make sure we had everything right. read more

I'm so disgusted with Garrett's!!! My family was thrilled when the store started to carry some basic items for live stock animals. The owner had VERY fair prices that were actually lower by a bit than anywhere else that is local. i.e. C.O.B. rolled oats for my horses. But, like in all things that are too good to be true, she started raising her prices and is now asking over $5 MORE per sack! This is ridiculous and highway robbery. There is NO REASON in God's creation she had to do this! EVERYTHING else in her store is much higher than anywhere else between Cloverdale to Santa Rosa. And the town council preaches "SHOP LOCAL", awh... yeah, right! Couldn't Garrett's have at least given us poor local farmers a little break in feeding our animals? How many millions of dollars does this lady need anyway? Her reputation is bad enough, if you ask any local about her, as she is not a nice person! She has given people now another reason to shop elsewhere. This is the last straw!!! I have no plans in ever returning to this store. And it's a shame as I am a 5th generation to our farming community. My grandparents and parents shopped at Garrett's ever since opening it's doors, but can no longer justify making someone else rich at their expense. They are now shopping at the Ace in Cloverdale! Visiting Healdsburg for a month and was told that Garrett's was" the best hardware store in the world". We love a good hardware store, so when we needed a hardware item, we knew where to go. So far been there twice and both times the same experience: floor people very helpful, but checkout women RUDE RUDE RUDE. TERSE TERSE TERSE. What's the purpose of that. They have everything in the store and the floor clerks were very cordial and helpful. Jolting experience change when the cashier told us, rudely, "don't go out that door, go to that counter, blah blah blah". Wouldn't "pardon me, could you please exit the other door" instead be a better way to do it. Looks like there are many others with this experience. Will go to another hardware store, or by the Windsor branch if I go that way--they have much better customer service ratings. Hope the manager read this. read more

Extremely high priced, and VERY poor customer service. I went into the store for plumbing parts and knew exactly what i needed but could not find the parts and there was no one in sight to help! I went to the registers and the cashiers were talking (inappropriately) amongst each other and couldn't even pause for long enough to give me the time of day. It's really too bad... this used to be a great business with kind employees, it seems as this company is going straight down hill!! So about ACE i went there couple times and everyone was really helpful. the first time i was looking for some nice planting plot and someone there was nice enough to show me around. After that i went for some bee traps and i have to admit that they are pretty expensive compare to other places i went to. Another days i was there looking around for the best dirt i could get for my little cactuses and i could not figure out which one. Then the guy working there came to me and asked if i needed help after explaining him my need..he showed me some dirt around that was specially for cactuses and i think that was cool even when i think of it now..... overall i always have a great experience when i go there. the customer service is always good to me.
