Tip: Don't come here expecting anything other than a Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak only makes Cabernet Sauvignons and offer only Cabs for tasting and for sale. We stopped in unannounced and were greeted warmly. Taylor was such a pleasure and she remembered my daughter & I from 2 years ago when she helped with our tasting. Not very often does a winery connect with visitors at that level. Says a lot about the culture here. Grabbed a couple glasses of champagne and walked the grounds to kill some time before our lunch reservation. Probably my favorite winery in the area. They are having a social hour on the terrace 3:15 to 5 Thursday thru Monday through the month of May. $10 a person waived if a glass of wine is purchased. Also small bites for purchase. We're experienced wine connoisseurs and have enjoyed wine experiences around the world, including in Healdsburg on numerous occasions. In our search for Pinots to serve with upcoming holiday dinners and parties, we stopped into Marine Layer. The space itself was inviting and had many comfortable seating arrangements from living room style areas with a plush sofas and chairs to more traditional table and chair seating to bar stools at the bar. Typically we enjoy engaging with staff while we sample wines, so naturally we gravitated to the bar. We were hoping to learn more about the wines they pour and about the winery itself. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. There were two gentlemen behind the bar and we obviously drew the short stick as our assigned staff member just couldn't be bothered to engage with us at all. He poured us our two glasses and proceeded to busy himself doing everything and anything behind the bar than to engage with us. We knew this wasn't the norm because the other staff member was readily and easily engaging with the other patrons. We ordered glasses of the the 2023 Grand Vent and the 2023 Cap's Crown. Both were palatable wines, but we were left wanting as literally no information was shared with us about these two wines, although we made it clear our intent was to find and purchase suitable wines for upcoming celebrations. Needless to say, Marine Layer failed its first interview and won't get another from us. Perhaps we've been spoiled by the exceptional tasting experiences we've had out on Westside Road - where anyone should go who's seeking exceptional Pinots from the area (Russian River Valley). We know that Healdsburg remains a great place to sample wines from Sonoma and beyond. We also know that a spot on the square in Healdsburg doesn't equate to excellence. We're often asked to recommend approachable wines and wine tasting experiences to friends, family and colleagues. Unfortunately, we'll not be recommending Marine Layer.

Laura was our host and she was really sweet and very knowledgeable about the wines that she poured. She told us about the history of the winery and how it began. It was neat to learn that Medlock Ames was started by two college buddies while they went to school in NYC. Most of their grapes from their wines are sourced from their own vineyards in Bell Mountain. The majority of the wines that are produced here are small lot and limited production. Tastings are $45 and available by reservation only. Although I enjoyed the atmosphere here, I wasn't blown away by any of their wines. My friend is a big fan of their sauvignon blanc and I'll admit that it's tasty and probably their signature wine. It was odd that it wasn't featured on their tasting list, but Laura was nice enough to pour it for us anyways. I'm not usually a fan of merlot, but I actually enjoyed their Jefferson Clone Merlot the best out of all the wines that we tried. I just felt that wines were overpriced for the quality, but it could have just been that my palate didn't align with these particular wines. Despite this, I would still come back again to try more of their wines. Hopefully, I'll find something that I truly like here in the future.
