I had an absolutely unacceptable billing experience from this restaurant that presents itself as luxurious. I dined at Hakkasan Miami Beach a few months ago with three friends. Our $805.72 bill was divided into four equal portions of $201.43. I authorized my $201.43 share. Hakkasan then processed my credit card for $201.43 TWICE. What followed was far worse than the original billing mistake. Rather than simply acknowledge that something had gone wrong and return my $201.43, Hakkasan fought my credit-card dispute and submitted doctored documentation to support keeping both charges. I spent months disputing this with Citibank, ultimately escalating the matter to Citi's Executive Response Unit and filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. And here's what I find extraordinary: Hakkasan's own reconstructed check shows four separate $201.43 payments totaling exactly $805.72. It identifies payments from two of my friends. It identifies one $201.43 payment from me. And then it shows my card a second time for another $201.43, without identifying a fourth cardholder. There were four diners. Hakkasan's records identify three of us. My card appears twice. Yet Hakkasan maintained that both charges were valid, and after nearly four months of fighting this, Citi ultimately sided with the restaurant. So I am now out an additional $201.43 because of a second charge their server (who appeared to be drugs that night) maintains I authorized. A billing mistake can happen anywhere. What defines a business is what it does after the mistake is brought to its attention. For a restaurant of Hakkasan's reputation and price point, I find this appalling. I would have expected meticulous accounting, serious customer service, and an immediate effort to determine why one guest's card appeared twice on a four-way split. Instead, I spent months fighting to recover $201.43 while the restaurant defended the second charge. I have dined at high-end restaurants around the world, and I cannot remember another experience that left me feeling this profoundly distrustful of a restaurant's handling of my credit card. Check your receipts when you go to Hakkasan. They cannot be trusted. Check your credit-card statement afterward. And keep all documentation. They doctor things afterward to fit their version of the story. I will not return to Hakkasan under any circumstances. If I could rate them as a -1, I would.

There was only one other person seated on the other side. At 5:15 a pack of women (5-6 ppl) walked in and started claiming seats and moving barstools around. When out of nowhere a manager (or someone who appeared to be in charge) ripped over to where we were seated and started talking to me sternly about moving chairs and saving seats. Never have I been reprimanded for saving one seat at a bar when there were other seats open. But I communicated with her that my friend was parking, and that I hadn't moved any seats. She reiterated again, no saving seats and then addressed the girls who moved the bar stools. Her tone was abrasive and honestly given what had occurred seemed out of place, especially that the bar wasn't packed and the restaurant was empty. Unfortunately, this interaction really just tinted the whole experience for me. I was scolded for something benign and also for something I had not done. Before I was admonished, I managed to order a roll (spicy tuna maki) and a drink, the agave picante. Neither was outstanding but neither were bad either. However, given the fact that it was happy hour food/free drinks it was perfectly adequate, nice presentation on both. The bartender was sweet enough and given how the manager treated us I figured he probably received similar treatment from both management and customers, or either or. So I wanted to tip him well. However, when I went to pay, the gratuity was already included and I said to him I wanted to tip him more than $2.40, because honestly he wasn't at fault at all, for how I was treated by his coworker/superior. But I guess whatever system they use makes it difficult to change because he didn't make the effort to let me pay him more. (It took very long to get our check because of said system, not sure why, but the poor man had to go hunt something down to do so. I paid with a normal card, nothing out of the ordinary as did all the people in my party.) My friend who chose the place and the other patron who was sitting at the bar both commiserated with me about the interesting treatment, and said they never saw or experienced what I did. So I hope it was a one off and maybe I was just unlucky to be seated next to a large group of ladies. But overall, if I had to recommend a place for happy hour, this wouldn't be it. Plenty of other places have better options for food/drinks and better service in the area. But I guess if you can't afford to buy yourself 2 drinks at happy hour prices and you happen to be a female, I understand its appeal.
