Waffle a la carte
Diana L.

This is a great breakfast/brunch spot! The food here is simply delicious! I got the Meat Lovers Omelette and it was amazing! Other places where I've had omelettes the egg part tends to be dry, but not here, it was perfectly moist! Overall this is one of the best omelette I've ever had! I prefer waffles over pancakes but the ones listed on the menu included eggs and such. They were able to make one a la carte for me. Although yummy the waffle was a little pricey, 9.99 for a plain waffle. Service was good, the server checked on me throughout my meal. Will definitely be back soon as there were quite a few things on the menu I wanted to try.

Had the chilaquiles, chorizo with flour tortillas, bacon and coffee. Good size portions. Very tasty plates. Delicious bacon and flavorful black coffee. Inside is on the smaller size. Friendly and fast service!

Great breakfast When I'm in Ventura I always have to stop here for breakfast. Great coffee as well.

It's been a loooonnnggg time since I've been to galloping Hen so we decided to stop in for breakfast on a rainy Friday. The space looks the same but is definitely under a different ownership from my last visit. The service was good and we were seated quickly. The menu had an extensive amount of options, but nothing seemed to really stand out. I ended up with the Cali breakfast burrito with eggs, fries, guac and asada. It came with sour cream and pico on the side. The burrito was pretty large, but really didn't hit the pallet it was just ok and filled the belly. It wasn't something that I'd crave and most likely won't make another visit.

Oh my gosh I love this place! Tucked away out of eyesight behind Big Lots! What a fantastic breakfast spot!! Very clean, small and simple place. Very friendly service! Food was yummy and they have great coffee! Highly recommend coming here!

Vega take scramble with potatoes

In venture for family appointments and found this place for breakfast. Small older, good oldies music and seated quickly. However, the two servers working spent 10 mins talking in the kitchen before they finally came out to take our order. But, this was only after an older man that was seated at the same time as us " went to the door and asked if someone going to wait on him?!" For very slow service and very strong coffee its rating is a 3. Once our order was taken, food came out pretty fast. Food was good and kudos to the cook! We May consider returning in the future.

Talk about a throwback old school breakfast spot. I'm never in this part of town so genuinely when I found it on Yelp I had no idea where I was going and when I turned into a baby blue colored shopping mall off the main drag I thought I had been transported to my grandmas era lol. This is a cool business shopping center stuck in time, old school Ventura and definitely a spot that feels nostalgic. The setting made for the perfect spot for a classic breakfast and lunch restaurant catering to the locals of Ventura as this spot is a staple, not one that's calling to the instagramers or influencers. And they are okay with that. It's clear that their customer base are locals coming in for a no frills meal with family down home vibes. Service was definitely 5 stars but casual. We were seated right away and orders taken without fuss. Everyone was very nice and welcoming but also kept to themselves and allowed you to enjoy your meal. The food came out reasonably quick and was super fresh. Our waitress was nice and got us everything we needed. When it came time to bus our tables and clear them they were on top of that too. No misses when it came to service. We loved the large menu and you'll definitely find something for everyone. Of course they specialize in breakfast and lunch diner type plates. The prices were average and the menu was easy to navigate, despite having a lot to choose from. The interior of this restaurant is very classic feel good family vibes. We laughed a little at all of the rooster/chicken/hen decor everywhere - hence the name of the place Galloping Hen. It was fun. The food was classic and totally hit the spot. My friend got an omelette that they let her customize a little bit with a side of hash browns. I was in the mood for a tuna melt and fries and it was tasty. Butter grilled bread and a generous amount of tuna. If you like a grilled tuna they have a good one here, I just only crave it once in a blue moon so I'll be good for a while. Definitely would love to come back to try their chicken fried steak or other classic breakfast combos. This spot is definitely going to stick around for another 40 years and I'm hoping to support them when I'm in the area and craving some down home classic cooking and service. Good spot, definitely give them a try!

Buckaroo

This breakfast eatery has lasted the test of time (since 1984). Galloping Hen offers up all your favorite standard breakfast items along with burgers and sandwiches. My husband saw a dish being delivered to another table and had to have it. The Buckaroo came with grilled biscuit, sausage, omelette and topped with gravy with a side of potatoes. He loved it. I had the French Connection, eggs, sausage and French toast. I always take a chance ordering sausage but this was good. Good service.

Chili verde omelette. My husband wasn't a fan of the cheese. So he scraped it off

I was blown away by how cute this place was with bright colors and Nola inspired decor. The service was incredibly friendly and the food was fresh & well made. Very limited vegan options, actually there was really only two- Buddha Bowl and the Buddha bowl done like a burrito. The bowl was delicious and I didn't feel like I was stuck eating a boring ice berg lettuce with oil and vinegar, if you know what I mean. My bf ordered the Nouveau Garden omelette and demolished it in no time. The portion was pretty standard and not generous like other cafes like Bill's etc but it was still good. Coffee is bottomless. It looks like the price of coffee has really gone up as it was $4+ per cup of black brewed coffee. We were seated in a private little area for two and it couldn't have been more perfect. Side note- the employees here are seriously awesome! I watched one of them patiently guide an elderly woman with a cane into the cafe. He was so polite and kind, the elderly lady seemed smitten with charm. What a wonderful find!

The hashbrowns were definitely my favorite because they were super crispy. I also got a hot chocolate and it did not disappoint. Really enjoyed everything about this place and would definitely come back!

I ended up ordering the chicken parmigiana panini because it sounded like a unique option and because it was one of their specialty items on the menu. Overall, it was enjoyable, however, it wasn't mind blowing by any means. The flavors were good but I felt like it was room temperature when I got it and I wish the chicken itself was crispier. The chicken is thick and juicy though, so I loved that about it. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles and I thought this dish was amazinggg. I loved how the syrup came out hot, the chicken was juicy, and the chili butter was just WOW. I'd say this is a must order if you're a fan of chicken and waffles. The restaurant itself had a nice ambience. They offer both indoor and patio seating. Service was very friendly and attentive. Our waitress wasn't rude, but she wasn't particularly friendly or attentive throughout the meal. Unfortunately, one of the salads we ordered had a hair in it, which my sister noticed immediately. She informed the food runner, and the kitchen prepared a replacement. However, our waitress never checked in on us or acknowledged the issue, and she didn't even seem to know what had happened until we brought it to her attention. Her response was not particularly apologetic, and no one offered to take anything off the bill. Having dined out frequently, I've encountered similar situations before, and the response has typically been a sincere apology and some form of compensation, whether that's removing the affected item or offering a discount. Instead, we were essentially told, "Well, she got another one, right?" My sister also had to wait until the rest of us had finished eating before she could enjoy her replacement salad. We eventually went to the front to speak with a manager or someone else about the situation. Unfortunately, that interaction was also disappointing. The woman we spoke with was dismissive and stated, "We don't do that here," emphasizing that it was a matter of principle. We had to push back to get the salad removed from the bill, and even then, the conversation involved unnecessary harsh commentary. Overall, the customer service was disappointing. Mistakes can happen, but the lack of acknowledgment, genuine apology, and willingness to resolve the situation professionally made the experience frustrating. We left feeling that our concerns were not taken seriously, and I would have expected a much more considerate response.

I always get either the seafood burrito or the spicy garlic shrimp burrito, but I always ask them to let me add an extra protein and they happily oblige for a very small surcharge (my go-to is usually some combination of the spicy garlic shrimp, ahi-seared rare, grilled shrimp, and/or grilled salmon). The burrito is huge! And for the quality of ingredients, the blast of flavor, and beach-side vibes, all for $14-20 depending on how you customize your meal, it is definitely a good bang for your buck. Highly recommend. Oh and they always hook it up with the salsa, and their salsas and sauces are bomb! I have seen them extremely busy during peak hours and on weekends because there are many beach goers and tourists in the area, and because the Ventura Pier and San Buenaventura Beach are such popular places. Walked right over to Dukes which is literally foot steps from the beach. To my surprise, not only was it pretty busy with the World Cup on every TV, but impressively, it didn't stop the service or kitchen from being super fast. Very impressive. I ordered to go this time so I could get back to parenting and enjoying the weather. Had to be quick so I could enjoy my time before it cools down and my sunburn fully sets in. I ordered the Gizmo which is basically a grilled chicken club on sourdough. It was great. Really don't have anything to add to that other than I would highly recommend it. Anyone who doesn't love a chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich might have some taste bud issues... It came with in-house made potato chips and those were also wonderful. I smashed that thing and literally went right to sleep in my chair. What a perfect beach day thanks to Dukes. To add to my food experiences and recommendations here, the time before this, I ordered the fish and chips. In my case it was the fried fish and sweet potato fries. It was so flavorful and crispy. I highly recommend eating it there or hopefully near by so it doesn't lose that fresh crunch. However, you have to get any and all fries with their Ranch. I had to get extra as I couldn't seem to get enough. Obviously every fry needed to have a disgusting amount of ranch on it.
