During our visit, I had the opportunity to speak with Rick and learn that the next generation is already preparing to carry on the family tradition. In a time when many independent restaurants struggle to survive from one generation to the next, that's something worth celebrating. The atmosphere is exactly what longtime fans have come to love. Wood-paneled walls, a bustling dining room, homemade pies in the dessert case, and an old-school charm that feels increasingly rare today. Even the cash-only policy somehow feels right at home here. The pickles are sweet gave a lil different twisted surprise. I also ordered a grilled chicken sandwhich made the same way. The sandwhich was grilled properly. Chicken wasn't dry. Service was just ok, we waited a considerable time and having no option for drink refills (they only offer cans) was a little disappointing. My MIL and husband loved the bologna sandwiches, my pork tenderloin was pretty good but definitely not like the Hoosier versions I'm accustomed to. The onion rings were top notch, fried perfectly. The pies however were only ok. The crust lacked flavor and was not crispy so likely not made with butter. We only tried the fruit pies since at 2:30 pm they were out of cream pies of any kind. Visited G&R Tavern to taste their world famous bologna sammich. My coworker and I visited and quickly realized they only took cash. Well, I only had a credit card, so my coworker was going to have to cover for me. For lunch, I requested a thick-cut bologna sammich (duh) and some onion rings with a Mountain Dew. My coworker requested the same sammich, but with fried mushrooms. Not long after, the food was delivered. My first bite of the bologna was magical. It had an excellent char on it that I found delicious. The flavor of the bologna was excellent! With cheese, onion, and mustard that I added, this was one of the best sandwiches I've had. Now, I have had a special place in my heart for bologna sammiches since my grandpa cooked them for us when we were kids. The onion rings were large and tasty. They should rename this place "Cheat Day," because you're not getting out of there without something fried, sweet and/or alcoholic. And it's SO worth it. The legendary bologna sandwich is legendary for a reason. That thick cut slab is enough to send you home happy by itself, but adding cheese and onions will make you happier. The burger is better than anything you would get at another grease pit or any fast food joint. And the combination of the burger and bologna - named the Country Boy - was the best choice of them all for me. G&R also has a unexpectedly large selection of pies. Where's Waldo??? The drive to Waldo is worth it to eat at the G & R Tavern. They claim to be the home of the famous bologna sandwich - which I did not think there was such a thing as a famous bologna sandwich. There is, and it is definitely at the G & R Tavern. This place is not an impressive building but it is really cool inside because it is filled with nostalgia that covers the last 60 years or so. The restaurant is clean and I loved the vibe. The staff was incredible - they operated like a team and we got great service. The food came out quickly - I really wish more restaurants could pull off great service and getting the food out that fast. I had the famous bologna sandwich, fried mushrooms, and fried cauliflower which was delicious (I was totally, impressed with the famous bologna sandwich). Wifie had their Cobb salad with chicken which she enjoyed. I normally don't eat dessert but the Cherry pie was calling my name and WOW a slice of warm cherry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yes, 5 stars. It is not fancy, but it did not disappoint. The G & R Tavern fires on all cylinders--it is worth a visit. We will be stopping back to explore more of their menu. read more

Our server very attentive but once we got our food we were fine, I got the G&R Tavern bologna sandwich with cheese onion & pickles a little mustard it is a very balanced sandwich my wife got the same with out cheese and enjoyed it. Before retiring in 2017, I used to travel up SR 23 - right past Waldo - at least once or twice a month. THe G&R Tavern is a very short detour off of SR 23 at the route 98 exit and I would stop occasionally to enjoy a fried bologna sandwich. However, since retiring, I haven't had an occasion to travel to the Waldo area until today. I planned my travels so that I could stop at the G&R for one of their famous freid bologna sandwiches. The good news is that today's sandwich lived up to my memory of the sandwiches I've enjoyed here in the past. The place was packed (lunch hour on a Saturday) but I was able to snag a seat at the bar instead of waiting for a table. The service at the bar was excellent. I ordered my old standard - a fried bologna with crinkle cut fries. The food was EXCELLENT. For those of you who might not like fried bologna (horrors), the G&R has a typical bar menu that includes burgers, dogs, fish, steak, pork chops, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, BLT's, and on and on - like I said, typical bar fare. I'm sure I don't need to tell the locals how good the G&R is but if you're traveling on Route 23 north of Delaware - you won't regret exiting at route 98 and stopping at the G&R Tavern. read more

If you are traveling on State Rt 23 near Waldo, you have to make a stop on the Waldo exit and exit to the left toward to little town. Turn left at the stop sign and head toward the G&R Bar and Grill. So, I know people are going to be upset about this, but,,,my husband and I have been stopping in Waldo at G & R's for several, several years. Always have had great food and service. Today, 10/2/25, not so much. Arrive at 11am hungry for lunch. Husband ordered The Bologna sandwich and curly fries. I wanted a small salad. Unfortunately, their idea of a salad is lettuce and tomato. Sorry, I need more than that. But that's ok. I ordered a cheeseburger with everything and regular fries. Order came out quickly. Good. BUT, our fries were old and barely warm. Mine definitely had been sitting under the warming light too long. Now, I'm sure you all know, fries, FRENCH FRIES, are really only good when they are fresh and hot. And up until today, never had an issue. I know you all think I'm being too harsh, but, a place like G & R's that you've enjoyed good hot food always, let us down today. Also, they didn't have any cream pies. (Not holding that against them). Also, I don't know if our server was new, but she wasn't really with it today. But everyone has those kind of days. We had a good dinner. We sat at the bar and had excellent service and perfect portions. The only disappointment was that the bologna had a cinnamon/clove taste. Cans only and nearly $5 a beer despite there being signs all over with old advertising with different prices. Cream pie prices also just went up to $6 a slice where they were $4 before. read more

Always driving past the exit to G&R Tavern and always say we need to stop. Today, we were doing the same thing but I said "PIE" and my hubby whipped into the exit. We pull up and there's no parking so good sign. They were busy but we were seated at the bar. We were greeted and waited on right away. Two pieces of pie Coconut Cream and Chocolate. The problem we had here was with the service. There wasn't any. We had just decided to get up and leave when the hostess stopped and asked how things were. We told her we had not been approached by anyone at all after sitting for close to 20 minutes. She immediately took our order (Blt, pork tenderloin and fries) and it took probably another 20 minutes to come out while we watched people who came in after us chowing down on their food.
