If you…read moredon't have a big appetite, you might be a little concerned as the main courses are quite generous, but I think you'll be able to finish them as they're so tasty. I enjoyed my time here. Elias Mat & Sant is located in the sentrum, Oslo's city center, so is walking distance to many sites and attractions. I visited here after walking from the palace along Karl Johans Gate as the restaurant is located off this main drag. Make reservations here for the restaurant is small and intimate. It was time to try reindeer while in the Nordic region of the world, so here I did. I ordered the reindeer stew, which was delicious. The reindeer stew was similar to a beef stew, but the reindeer is leaner, so didn't taste as heavy, which is a good thing. Over some mashed potatoes with a gravy and herbs and a side of lingonberry, it completed the meal. It also came with a side of complimentary bread, which is not always the case at other restaurants. That was a nice bonus though because the bread helped soaked up the stew. Perfection!

There are two locations. There were several others that made reservations for the other location,…read morebut were able to be accommodated here since it wasn't too busy during lunch. The restaurant also has a fish shop attached. I ordered creamy fish soup as it's a traditional Norwegian staple. It had mussels and vegetables and came with bread and aioli. I enjoyed it overall, but found some sand at the bottom of the soup possibly from the leek. I also shared the raw platter - 3 Fine oysters, 3 Boudeuse oysters, ceviche, löjrom snack, and salmon tartar. The löjrom snack (salted chips, löjrom roe, sour cream, shallots, chives) was the favorite. Everything was fresh and tasty, but it was also an expensive lunch.

This popular casual seafood restaurant is just a short walk from Oslo Central Station. We came for…read morean early dinner around 4:15P on a Saturday and the restaurant was already mostly full inside. The setup includes tall tables, booths, a few seats at the bar and several patio tables outside, though it was unfortunately raining during our visit. The host initially seated the four of us at the bar, which was tight, but at least it had a nice view into the kitchen! Once a booth opened up, he offered to move us and we were much more comfortable. The most popular menu item here is the fish and chips, but our waiter said he loves the cod croquettes and that was all it took to convince me since you don't see those on just any menu. + COD CROQUETTES: Five crispy golden croquettes were fried to perfection with a rich creamy cod filling. They were served atop a bold red pepper purée, drizzled with a savory aioli and finished with shredded cheese. The red pepper sauce added a fantastic warmth that really elevated the dish, and the portion size was just right. + CUCUMBER SALAD: A large portion of sliced cucumbers (and another crunchy veggie I couldn't identify) was tossed in a sesame oil dressing. This was so refreshing and crisp, cutting through the richness of the croquettes. We easily split it between the four of us. The only other veggie option was green salad. My sister got the ceviche, which is a lighter entrée. She liked the fish, but said it was extremely citrusy, more than she expected. There were also some tough corn-like pieces which she put to the side since they were too difficult to chew. Service throughout our meal was warm and attentive; our waiter regularly checked on us and even brought an extra bottle of water when he noticed ours running low. Overall, I loved my croquettes, the salad was delicious, and the staff's hospitality made this a memorable final dinner in Oslo!

If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. FOOD - 4 stars...melding of Norwegian and American culinary sensibilities into appetizing dishes AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual and relaxing, the nice weather was the key advantage that evening SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive considering the crowds TOTAL - 4 stars...a good way to sample Norway through your palate RELATED - Exploring Norway?
