As a rather non athletic person it was intimidating walking into a Pilates studio the first time - but it need not be here. Every teacher was welcoming, kind, and incredibly knowledgeable. Each equipment class has only 5 people max so you always get lots of individual attention and support. I love how attentive they are to every client, making sure you're doing the exercises properly so you're being safe and getting the maximum benefit. After taking classes at this studio for a little over a year, I'm upgrading my review to five stars. I'm still not a fan of the cancellation policy, but I've discovered that their prices are on par with their competitors, and I love their classes! Pilates has never pretended to be cardio, so while I don't always feel like I'm getting a workout during class, I often feel it after, and I've definitely noticed a change in my body. I find mat classes to be great for core work and equipment classes to be great for "everything else", and I really like going back and forth between the two. The instructors are really good about providing directions that make sense, answering questions (don't be scared to speak up and ask), and making sure you're doing the movements in a way that will help your body and not get you injured. I'm mainly a fan of Desiree and Lija, but I've taken a class here or there from Kelley or Liz and have had good experiences with them too. Class sizes are small so you can almost always get individual attention, but if that's not your style they're okay with that, too. Wherever you are in the spectrum-- between totally out of shape to tight from running a marathon to just wanting more workout variety or core strength-- I'd definitely recommend Functional Strength. read more

I used to go here when I lived down in Highlands Ranch. I love the studio. I love the one on one attention. I love the variety of classes. I love Sarah! The variety of equipment really makes the experience great. You start with a set of private sessions so can get the hang of what you are doing. I'd say you need at least 5 times to really get (feel) how to hold your body, how to make it move the way you want! After that you can go hog wild! The classes fill up, so make your reservation early! The strength and flexibility you gain from this type of exercise is amazing! The studio is really centrally located off of Lincoln and Quebec. This was my first time in a Pilates studio and it has been a great experience! I bought a Groupon for 10 equipment classes and like a few of the other reviewers, I didn't realize that I had to use all 10 classes before the 'Redeem by' date (because 99.999999% of other fitness groupons I've tried out has said finish your first class by the 'Redeem by' date). I was getting a little worried about losing out on my classes, or having to work with Groupon on getting a refund back, but Kelly was really responsive with my concerns and extended my groupon date by a month. YAY! I don't lose them! I started out with a personal training session with Desiree, which I'm glad I did, because it helped me get familiar with unfamiliar equipment in a comfortable environment. As a note, though, I've been in classes with people who start out with classes without any kind of personal training, and all the instructors were super attentive to their needs as complete beginners, so I wouldn't say you absolutely must do a personal session. Other than that, every class has me working out some muscles that I never knew you could work out, and get in unheard of positions with my inflexible body, but feeling so good/stretched out after every class that it's worth it. And all the instructors are really good about asking about if there's any pain and if there is, giving modified versions of the move. read more

I started taking classes here a year ago after receiving a Groupon for Christmas. I had never tried Pilates before but I've been hooked ever since! I've tried a few other classes at other studios and have found that the instructors don't come anywhere close to the instructors at Functional Strength in terms of expertise and attention to detail. I have taken classes at both the Lone Tree and Castle Rock studios and the instructors all have different styles so I always feel like I'm learning something new from each of them. If I've ever had questions, the instructors have always been more than happy to help. The people in the classes are usually pretty fun too. The studio offers several different types of classes and levels, so there is definitely something for everyone from very beginners to more advanced (they are also great with working with people who have injuries). If you ever have a chance to watch one of their Advanced Reformer demos, I'd highly recommend it-you'll be amazed! If you've never taken Pilates before (or if you have), this is the place to do it! read more

After moving to Colorado I made a search of all the nearby pilates studios I could find. I initially heard about functional strength pilates because of their great groupon deal, but stayed on after the groupon deal because of the down to earth yet well trained approach of the teachers. They continually offer ways to challenge and grow the client no matter what age or stage of fitness each has. Each teacher has her own unique personality and teaching style, but keep to a high standard of personal teaching. Glad I landed here! read more

Functional Strength is a great studio; it is very clean, the classes are small and the teachers are very knowledgeable. You can usually find a class for when you want. Only issues are when you become more advanced, there are not enough classes for that level and parking is a real pain. read more

I have going to Functional Pilates for 2 years and I cannot say enough Great Things about this studio and all the instructors. The studio has a very flexible schedule; the fees are very reasonable; whether taking a group class or a private lesson (Desiree is the best!) I have learned so much about my body and I continue to learn. I will be 65 in a few weeks and this is the greatest experience for me! I am really surprised about some of the negative reviews I see here. I started at Functional Strength Pilates on a Groupon (or might have been an Amazon Local but same thing). I read the really not so fine print and knew you had to complete the classes by the expiration date. At least on my coupon, the clock didn't start until the first class was taken, though so I looked at my long-term calendar and planned my start strategically when I knew I'd be able to complete the classes on time. Really wasn't that hard. As for the studio itself, I think it is phenomenal. I have had a lot of surgeries and some have been caused by poor therapy to minor injuries or poor instruction in exercises - granted one was because I tried to learn pilates on my own with a video. Pilates can be great for you but it also can be surprisingly harmful if you do it wrong. I have not had a single instructor here let me do things wrong. They always check in on how your body is before class starts so they don't push something and check in to make sure nothing is hurting and you are feeling the right things in the right places. Because they keep the classes small, they are able to check your alignment and make sure you are doing things correctly. Just don't go into a class above your level, even if you think you're fit or you've done pilates before. Some classes will make you feel like you get a better "workout" than others. And the way some instructors explain things might resonate better with you than others. So, try beginner classes with all the instructors for a while to find a good fit for you. Liz works best for me. The way she explains things makes sense to me and I can visualize what I need to do. And, even in her lower level Systems class, she kicks my butt. I walk out shaky in that good kind of way. But, I've also taken classes from almost all the other instructors here and have not had a bad experience. So, my advise to have a great experience here: read your coupon; start with beginner classes regardless of what you think your level is; and speak up if something doesn't make sense or doesn't feel right. read more

I would suggest this place for older, or disabled people looking to get into somewhat better shape, definitely not a place for athletes or those who are already in good physical shape, this will not be a workout for you. I dreaded going here, but felt as if I had to because I bought a Groupon. Every class I went to, never once did I become out of breath or feel like I was bettering my physical shape, and I gave multiple teachers and classes a go. As some other reviewers have mentioned, some of the instructors act like they are better than you... not true whatsoever. I would suggest doing yoga instead of going to this Pilates studio. I went here once. The instructor was nice. I liked it. I work 2 minutes away and really wanted this to be my permanent pilates studio. But their service deserves 1 star and caused them to lose a customer. I tried to redeem my Groupon for 10 classes shortly before the expiration date - only to be surprised with their "policy" that all classes had to actually be *completed by* the expiration date. I've never had this problem redeeming a Groupon with any other business. So after the manager aggressively tried to push me into spending my "balance" on a package twice as expensive and tried to redefine the term "expiration," I contacted Groupon to ask their policy. I have been doing Pilates mat classes at various gyms for over a decade but it wasn't until I found Functional Strength Pilates that I reaped the benefits of Pilates. I have been taking regular classes there for a year now. Over the last few years as a Personal Trainer I crosstrained in plyometrics, weightlifting, cycling and Crossfit but I never could get beyond certain limitations like how my shoulders felt they were ripping off my body when I did pullups. I looked strong but didn't feel truly strong. After dedicating my mind and body to Pilates with the help of the amazing staff at Functional Strength, I am literally stronger than ever before. I have not lifted weights or done any thing other than straight up Pilates for the last year. I never thought that I would get this strong in one year from Pilates. I no longer feel like my shoulders are disconnecting when I do pullups. (By the way there are crazy fun exercises that make you feel like a gymnast in the advanced work so keep pressing on) My joints are finally as strong as my muscles. My muscles are now flexible and long yet reactive. My posture is tall and alive. My spine feels supple and supported. More proof is when I ran a 5K mudrun on a day's notice NOT ever being a runner after only 6 months of Pilates and I felt like a superhero as I rolled through the course because Pilates has given me the lungs, legs, strength and physical vitality I need to have spontaneous fun in life.. As far as Pilates feeling like a "workout": It wasn't until the more intermediate/advanced level that I felt a huge sense of circulation throughout class. It is a different type of "cardio". It isn't heart pounding but rather a whole body synchronization where the cardiovascular, musclular, skeletal, and nervous systems are working as one. It is incredibly exilerating and regenerative. I understand how starting slow and trying to "feel" internal muscles can be confusing or make people feel like they don't get it. Precise alignment with muscular support is required so you can use your entire being to workout rather than one little muscle at a time. It is backwards from traditional resistance training in that the equipment supports you rather than resists you. I do empathize with the difficulty of getting your body to do what the teachers want because that is hard and it takes time, patience and dedication but is well worth it. I say all this about Pilates knowing that there is a HUGE variance in the quality of Pilates teachers and I know that I could never have gotten where I am now without the patient, expert guidance from each of the different teachers at Functional Strength. One other thought is that the Pilates experience is greatly influenced by the equipment used. Functional Strength employs high quality classical equipment and is clean and inviting. Didn't mean to type a whole essay but I am blessed to have found Functional Strength Pilates. I love this place and each teacher and the fellow studients! read more

This studio is great. I've been coming for several years and enjoy the instructors, who are knowledgeable but also are flexible, fun and adjust their teaching technique based on who is in the class. I just started doing Pilates in the Spring of 2014 and have been coming here 1x a week for about 15 weeks. I cannot compare this studio or instructors to other places but I am really enjoying it. So far, I have only taken Reformer Classes but hope to try some of the other Equipment classes. I originally got a groupon for 10 classes but have since signed up for more classes. Kelly and Desiree have been nothing but exceptional instructors in the year that I started classical pilates. I very rarely go to other instructors, but when I have they have been great too. Classical pilates changed my life and my health for the better. In college (many years ago), I suffered a back injury playing basketball that eventually required surgery. Since the injury, I have had days and even months that have been plagued with pain (reasons ranging from sneezing to excessive exercising), which led to an inability to do the things that I have always loved. I tried every form of therapy or so I thought. I had done "Pilates," but didn't understand that there were specific types of Pilates. In January 2017, I discovered a classical pilates mat class and I was hooked. The strength and flexibility that I have gained doing equipment and mat classes has been incredible. I am amazed at the things that I am asking my body to do because I always worried about hurting my back. As mentioned, this form of low impact exercise has completely improved my life and I want to spread the word. The instructors offer wonderful guidance through the classes. They want you to do things right so that you can get the most out if your workout without injury. They truly are amazing!! read more

I started doing Pilates about 3 years ago at one of the big gyms in town. I enjoyed it there, but felt like I was missing something. I bought a Groupon about two years ago and signed up for the intermediate class with Desiree. At the end of class she told me that the class probably wasn't for me and that I should try her mixed levels class. At first, I was a little put out. I was able to do all the exercises and keep up with the class; I had taken Pilates at a gym for close to a year, so why did she feel like the class wasn't for me? Well, I took her advice and went to the mixed levels class the next week. This class proved to be harder because I was actually using the RIGHT muscles at the Right time. They went a little slower so I was able to get a little more one on one attention and actually understand what I was supposed to be doing. Doing Pilates has truly changed the way I look, feel and move my whole body. I love this studio and instructors so much that I enrolled in their Teacher training Program...I will keep you posted on how that turns out - so far it is great!. For now, keep doing Pilates. read more
