Visited Function on a Saturday night for happy hour, about 20 minutes after they opened. The place was virtually empty. The restaurant is a lot more spacious than its outside would hint at. Their happy hour menu knocks a couple dollars off some of their regular menu items. I decided to go with the shrimp tacos and they were surprisingly good - I was expecting an average taco but it was yummy and I'd actually order it again. My one qualm is that on the happy hour menu, it doesn't indicate it, but the shrimp tacos are actually $2 more. Came during their happy hour and got the shrimp tacos. The sauce, which we think we from the pico de gallo, was delicious and the shell was perfectly thin and crunchy. The menu didn't indicate that the shrimp tacos costed $2 extra (this is indicated on their regular menu) so it came as a surprise on the bill. The restaurant is located downstairs and the space was larger than I expected it to be. They have a corner with a stage and looks like they have live music sometimes. Since we came when they just opened for the night and were their first customers/only ones there, there was only 1 worker who was doing stuff around the restaurant and was hard to get his attention sometimes. While looking for a cocktail bar and live music, my friend and I stumbled upon Function bar. Midtown is in need of some low-key night life, so we were excited and optimistic. The narrow staircase takes you down into the basement, which opens up to an open space. I can see a live band + dance floor situation happening here. But it was pretty quiet on a Friday ~8pm. They have a large craft beer menu, a solid cocktail list, and a very reasonable food menu! We grabbed a couple of cocktails and some garlic fries (amazing!) and I'm really looking forward to coming back for a live band. read more

Went back for a second visit and had another great experience! Shakshouka was spicy so I would be wary of that for anyone who doesn't like that. My partner thought the burger tasted healthy, refreshing, and again very fresh. I noticed that the space was very clean again, which is surprising considering that it is a night music venue. Everything on the menu has fun names and interesting food combinations. Great flavour fusions are what make this gastropub stand out. Everything is made in house. They seem to smoke all of their meats....as well as watermelon! Smoked watermelon is on the menu for any veggies around or anyone looking to try something truly unique. The Holy Smokes! Burger is deeeelicious. So smokey. So meaty. So good. The fries are a killer; so good they are NOT shareable. You've been warned. Function Bar does not let their menu get stale. April This was my 4th time visiting here, This time i brought my friend who's never been before. Today we had the male owner as our waiter. He was friendlier and nicer this time around at least. I asked which of the ciders was the sweetest and went with that. I Had the apple and cherry cider. I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't my favourite but didn't hate it. I would have it again if they didn't have my usual go to's. Food wise I had the Dr Pepper duck taco. The Dr Pepper duck taco consisted of hoisin braised duck, kimchi, and Dr Pepper crema. The Duck wasn't what i was used to. It was very chewy, reminded me of a sweet (but not overly sweet) flavoured beef jerky until the kimchi hit. The spice from the kimchi and then sweet from the Dr Pepper pairs well together. I'd like to taste it on beef or duck that's prepared differently. $16 for 1 taco and a cider isn't bad if your looking for a decent priced spot near Yonge and eglington. read more

When Function Bar opened a few months ago, they were operating only as a daytime bakery and coffee shop. There was also a plan for the place to function as a gastropub in the evenings, and since I don't drink coffee, that's what I was waiting for. I finally got a chance to check the place out on Saturday night and it seems like the Yonge/Eglinton area definitely has a cool new nighttime spot. The lack of windows - the joint is underground, after all - isn't as weird as I thought it might be, and I really liked the dimly-lit vibe they're going for. We decided to share a couple of items: Holy Cow poutine ("braised beef short rib, duck fries, mushroom brandy cream, cheese curd"): This is definitely a top-notch poutine. I could've used some more of the tasty gravy, yes, but the cheese was plentiful and it was all melted, so it's hard to complain. The short rib was tender and definitely added a tasty dimension to the dish, although I didn't love biting into a piece of bone. Jalapeño Popper Burger ("roasted jalapeño and aged cheddar stuffing, spicy corn relish"): We really enjoyed this concoction, as well. The meat was cooked well and had a fair amount of juiciness, although neither of us really noticed or tasted the roasted jalapeño and aged cheddar stuffing. The spicy corn relish definitely added a delicious dimension to the burger, though. Service was attentive and prompt, and though there were a few issues with our food, I'm definitely happy that Function Bar is in the neighborhood and I look forward to returning on a regular basis. read more

Terrible food. We ordered two snacks and instead of plating them on two separate dishes, they put them together on a oval dish. I mean if I order 5 things, are they going to put everything on one dish. Food was mediocre at best. The taco shell was so chewy it was almost like uncooked dough. For a place that calls themselves a bar, these people cannot make drinks. asked for a "fruity" cocktail and what I ended up getting was a gin and water. Came here a few weeks ago with some colleagues after work. It can be super hard to miss with the construction going on, and the sign isn't very noticeable. You take the stairs down and you'll find yourself inside a funky looking bar, which had a lot of empty space. It was pretty dead when we got there which was about 6pm on a Friday night, but picked up a bit as the night went on. I thought their beer selection was pretty good, and enjoyed mine. We got a couple apps to share which were ok, but I felt very overpriced for what you were getting. They did have a couple games on hand which was a nice touch. What I'm not too fond of are the prices - my boyfriend ordered three tacos and they ended up being teeny tiny (like smaller than the palm of my hand) and totalling $18 + tax. I wasn't expecting much considering the grimy place this location used to be. They cleaned it up so nice. It looks incredible in there. My partner liked their beer menu and I was happy they had a couple cans of cider and their cocktail menu didn't appeal to me. The food menu did make me a bit nervous, there's a lot of heavy meats and foods. We ordered a couple tacos which were alright but I wouldn't order again as the shells were chewy and just all wrong. The fillings in my taco were so plain it just wasn't good. The only other thing we ordered was the pulled pork nachos, it was so meat and sauce heavy that at first I was disappointed. But the flavours were delicious. The flavour combinations are so strange and I was very confused as to why it tasted so good. The pork was smoked really nicely and was covered in a delicious bbq sauce. The other sauce that on there in a Mac a cheese sauce, I think Mac and cheese powder mixed with sour cream. There is also fresh dill sprinkled across the top of the nachos and a dill and sour creak dip on the side. There was a lot going on flavour wise and it all went together so well. Because of this one nacho dish we will be back to try some more of the food. The server also brought over the smoked watermelon which was smoked so much it made me wheeze and left my tongue feeling strange. I think the chef is likely a smoker and can't taste it as well as we could. I was disappointed with how much it's smoked because I can see that it would be delicious if done properly. I'd say it's smoked 3/4 longer than it needs to be. I felt like a wheezing bag of smoke after eating it. I forgot we ordered the creme brûlée which was apple jacks flavour. They rotate the cereal flavour. It was alright. I don't think I'd order the creme brûlée again because it was to runny. I can't wait to try their cereal flavoured gelato. I also can't forget to mention on of the most important things was that the service was fantastic. Some of he best service we had in the neighbourhood. I was very impressed with Function, from the time it first opened as a daytime coffee joint to when the long awaited gastropub came about. Drinks are amazing. Food is amazing.
