The location is fixed, adjacent to the 80th St lifeguard station. I loved the vibes and magnetism of the crowd. Everybody here comes with one mission, dancing and having fun. Definitely not my usual scene, but I enjoyed this immensely. It's nice to get out of your comfort zone sometimes. We came early on a Friday and managed to get lucky with parking. Soon after, we made our way to the beach and got to see the lovely full moon making its appearance. If you're going during the winter months, bring a jacket. It gets windy! Otherwise, bring a blanket or two, as well as some comfortable footwear. Ditto with a camera. You'll see fire dancers performing to lively music as soon as the moon goes down. It's a fun treat for all, regardless of age. Be careful with the kids though - fire is dangerous, after all. I suggest to go early, and if not, use Uber or Lyft. Limited parking in the area. Regardless, it's worth it. You get to meet a lot of cool people and this makes for some amazing family fun/hanging out/date night. read more

Came here to relax and enjoy the full moon along with the eclectic Afro, Caribbean, latin beats. This group here is extremely talented and get together every month for a full moon drumming. It's right on 79th and Collins and you can walk through a park to gain access to the location on the actual sand. Parking is along the street and police are parked outside to keep the crowd safe. Many people come out here in groups with family, friends, tourists, etc with blankets, and chairs to post up and celebrate. It lasts for hours and alot of drumming and dancing brings everyone together. You can smell the incense in the air as well to give it more of a spiritual gathering. All are welcome here especially your 4 legged friends( dont forget to have them leashed). Another cool thing at these drum circles is the hand made items for sale with stones and crystals( make sure to bring cash). It started to rain after 2 hours so we headed in early but alot of people stayed and continued to celebrate under the moon. I'd recommend to everyone to at least come out once for such a relaxing drum and dance session. read more

Loving the liberation of spirit and mind on a full moon evening!! It had rain al day but by 9:15 the clouds rolled out and the moon appeared . People from all walks of life were out enjoy such a beautiful moon! There were tents pitched everywhere and the instruments were being played. The people were moving to the rhythm and beat. Others were at the edge of the water which by the way was warm. Felt safe. Miami Beach Police patrol the event. People are mindful and keep things in control. At 12 all are escorted off the beach. Love, Love, Love, the Miami drum circles! They take place every full moon night beginning around 8 pm. The first time I went I was completely blown away by the amount of people around the bonfire, walking up and down the beach, camped out on blankets and towels, and swimming in the ocean. It was electrifying!! The light of the full moon lit the beach up with it's beautiful glow, I felt like I was in another world. The music of the drums took me away and I danced, and danced until I couldn't dance anymore. And then, I hit the water. The waves were amazing at night and in the summer months the water is warm, inviting, and enticing. I absolutely revel in it. My kids are huge fans. Yes, I take my kids with me and we usually build our circle away from the bonfire because there are just too many people in that area. We get comfortable with some fruit, snacks, and drinks and we also bring our sage and incense to burn. This is a time we hold our family ritual in releasing unwanted energies under the full moon. The first time we went I had no idea how much my kids would enjoy the water and we didn't think to bring towels. So whenever we go it's like packing up for a beach day, without the sunscreen. We had to learn this the hard way, make sure you exit towards the south end of the beach. The first time we went we followed the crowd when it was over and got stuck trying to exit through a space in the gate that was closed. Everyone seemed to be cool with it, like this was the thing to do, however when traveling with kids it could get a little tricky and scary. The beach was packed and in a large crowd like that it's safer to have an exit that doesn't require you to become a contortionist in order to leave. It's a great place to unwind, let your hair down and let loose. You won't be looked at like you're crazy on this night, it's what's expected. read more

Many many "moons" ago, like back when I was in High School I heard rumors about this wild full moon party on the beach with all sorts of wild fun stuff as described by Nate. I think I even stumbled upon it once but couldn't stay for the duration as I had to catch the bus back home. Fast forward to 2003..Party 93 was on Air..the boom was starting and Miami was starting to become known as an art Mecca. How exactly I became reacquainted is a hazy memory but there I was November '03 to enjoy the full moon and eclipse that night. As I recall "Exploration of Space" by Cosmic Gate was playing as I drove there. Since that day it had earned a regular spot in my Blackberry's calendar and a qualifier for any girl I'd date. If she doesn't enjoy it, she and I aren't dating! I've enjoyed the drums, the chanting, the barely dressed belly and lighted hula hoop dancers, the waves and of course La Luna herself. I've experienced good conversation, summer romances and even got hypnotized at one. It's like an esoteric and erotic carnival rolled into one awesome event! It's a roving party in the sense that the exact location isn't known until the night off. Best advice is to park near 79th street and head to where you hear the drums. The caveat is that since the beach is technically closed at midnight in this location, Miami Beach PD shows up around 1145pm to roust everyone out. For the most part they won't arrest you if you leave. Also glass bottles aren't allowed on the beach - even in daytime - so be discrete if you bring your own grown up grape juice (ie use a flask). Full Moon Drum Circle is certainly a must have experince that should be on everyone's bucket list! read more

The full moon drum circle is a Miami tradition that has been happening ever since I can remember. I've been joining this community of people since I was a junior in High School and it has never failed me. Every month, the day prior to and the day of the full moon, drummers, fire jugglers, dancers etc, gather at a spot on the beach, somewhere between 79th and 85th St., and jam to the beat of drums underneath the moonlight. I've seen all kinds of people and all kinds of drum circles. If the full moon falls during the week, the circles tend to be smaller (20-60 ppl) with a tighter community feel of artist, they also last longer before the cops come break it up*. If it falls during the weekend, or during summer or break, the circles can be up to 200 people, with big bonfires and different mini circles scattered around the main one. These also tend to have a higher ratio of high schoolers, chongos/as, the after party clubbers that are still high on something, and your typical Dave Mathews band- listening, Birkenstock wearing undergrads from the many universities. It makes for some really amusing people- watching. So bring a big picnic blanket, your favorite bottle of wine, and if you have one of those Indian shawls with those jingling things wear it for a musical addition while you dance. If you are a drummer, you are welcomed to bring your congas, djembes, dunduns, sabars, tambourines or what have yous, and join in the jam session. *yes, the cops do tend to come and break it up eventually because its illegal to be hanging out at the beach after hours. But they're cool with it noting that this has been going on for decades, sometimes they let it go on all night, others they break it up around 2 or so... they wont arrest ppl unless you are really asking for it. Some advice: circles that don't have bonfires tend to last longer. read more

My fellow Yelpers told me about this party on the sand that takes place when the moon is full, my interest was peaked so I headed out this full moon to check it out. I was shocked that something like this has been going on in a city I've lived my entire life and I never knew about it. This was quite the experience. So many people gathered on the sand, all bringing something to share. Be it music, drinks, or other talents it was an evening of sharing. The vibe was so communal, talk to whoever's sitting next to you and by the end of the night you've got a new friend you'll be looking forward to seeing again the next time. If you fear Hippy's, VooDoo, Pagans and people of free spirit, this is definitely not going to be in your current. Personally I've never seen so many people that needed Jesus congregated into one space like this in my life. What started out 16 years ago as a few Godless Liberal pagans drumming around a bonfire on every full moon has transformed into what I would now consider a "Miami tradition" of hundreds of people gatherings monthly for a night of drumming, dancing and debauchery. It's pretty easy to find, typically around 8 pm and beyond crowds of people from all walks of life begin to gather on the full moon at the 79 st entrance on Collins ave. You really can't miss it because there's always a police presence there with rolling blue lights. Once you arrive you're going to see a swarm of people, there's typically two central drum circles with many satellite circles, I just follow the sound that draws me the most. I've seen fire dancers, neon dancers, alcohol & smokers. Some people just bring an instrument (typically a percussion instrument) and join the leading troupe or start a new drum circle somewhere else within the crowd. It's easy to fit in, just get close to the fire and the drumming and let loose, what ever you feel like doing. The last time I came I saw a dude playing a trombone, a girl vending new age stuff like crystals and people flying drones. The amount of people in attendance was amazing. Even though there were more people in attendance, the control of crowd was still the same. If you're looking for an "out of the box" event in Miami - The Full Moon Drum Circle is the place to be! The night is filled with cool people, good vibes, music, and fire twirlers... can't go wrong with that! Located right on the beach near 79th and Collins. I would recommend getting there a little early, as parking can be hectic. Come prepared with a blanket, cooler, and friends. Say hi to your fellow circle-dwellers. Every age, race and creed is covered, and there isn't a rude or unfriendly face in the lot. As the drums start to beat, get up to groove. Interpretive dance is the gist of it, so wave your arms, hop around, shake your tail-feather; lose your inhibitions. As Johnny Castle once said, feeeeeel the music. Get liberated. I have always mentioned that I wanted to try to find a beach where we can get some good friends to hang out around a bonfire and have a few beers. I was told about the Full Moon Drum Circle, but I never had the opportunity to go until my little hippie friend, Bo, invited us. The actual drum circle wasn't until Sunday night, but we went on Saturday night instead. I was not sure what to expect, but we went ahead to check it out. I bundled myself up since it was a bit chilly outside, grabbed a blanket and headed out to the beach. It was just a very small group of us that went, Christian, Bo and I, but it was very delightful. Although the weather was colder than I like, it was a great atmosphere. The moon was shining so bright which reflected off the ocean. What a beautiful sight to see. There wasn't that many people out there, but as time passed, more and more started showing up. There were some fire throwers, people with glowing balls of some sort, a few drummers and lots of people to have a good time. We didn't stay too long since we were freezing out asses off, but it was a great time while we were out there. If it wasn't for the weather, we would have stayed longer to enjoy the party. I would definitely go again once the weather warms up a bit so I can stay longer to enjoy the festivities. read more

Last time I went to the drum circle, it was October of 2000, I think. This is back when it was on 22nd street. It was wild. There was a couple thousand people people, giant fires and a crazy vibe. Perhaps in my younger years, there was fungus ingestion. The crowd was the perfect Miami crowd: ecletic, on edge and hinting at dangerous. I wish it was still like that. I've been in Miami for 4 years and I only just heard of this incredible event! Huge crowds gather to watch fire performers and hula hoopers while casually drinking and socializing with friends and strangers alike. It is located on the very northern tip of South Beach and is great place to walk around to find eating places and bars. Parking is quite a struggle, so ubering would be your best bet. Pooling with a bunch of friends will make the price more manageable! read more

The first time I went, I ended up sitting with a group that I thought was there for the full moon drum circle but they were actually going some kind of ritual which I guess I didn't pick up on. Some lady even offered me peanuts which I ate and god knows what was in them now that I think back to that (luckily I'm still here so they were probably just peanuts). I digress... Finally I ended up where I was supposed to be and had a great night. On the second trip, I was more prepared as I brought my own blanket this time and brought drinks as well. Definitely go prepared for a beach experience combined with your invisible dancing shoes that will help you dance to the beat all night. Such a good experience. We got there with our coolers and blankets around 8:00 pm. Perfect timing we found parking across the street and after 6:00 pm is free. We brought food and drinks. Sat down and started seeing the people arriving. Coincidentally we sat in the edge of the circle. Around 9:00 there were like 200 people at least. The music, the show and the ambiance in general are amazing. Little bit too much ganja but overall an amazing experience. The moon was recharging our energy and we left at midnight. Only thing is we saw a bad fight which kind of ruined everyone's good energy but we got over it and kept on enjoying the live music, the fire dancers and the energy from every one. So good to see people from every background, families and just everyone enjoying this amazing moon, the energy from the ocean and the music. I was wondering who pays these artist for their performances? Is it free...? Cause the events of course are free. I am definitely coming back and I recommend anyone who loves this hipster and chill kind of events to participate but please control your drinks and don't fight. the people that come are tying to have a good time and I talk from myself I go cause I want to recharge all my energy with the moon! read more

Full moon drum circle is held when the moon is full in case the title isn't obvious. It's a fun and relaxed atmosphere. When you arrive at 79th and Collins, you can find metered parking outside. Make your way toward the beach. When you arrive at the sand, walk to your left a little north. Here, you'll find people gathering with their instruments. It may be several drums and people bring other instruments. So if you're into music bring your instrument to join in! For you couples, it's a nice atmosphere bring your towels and blankets to lay/sit on and unwind. It doesn't matter what you do for a living, everyone comes together through music. A sense of unity. A peace as calm and connection with the earth. :) You can also do a quick Facebook search as there is a Facebook group for it. You can make sure what days it's held and ask questions if needed. If I could give this awesome get-together of folks known as the full moon drum circle 10 stars, I would. What is more peaceful (and perhaps romantic) than lying on a towel on the beach, enjoying the sound of waves, and watching the entrancing movements of fire dancers, hula dancers, and belly dancers, all while enjoying the ocean breeze, the full moon, the stars, and beats? The full moon drum circle consists of people who either worship the moon as a form of religion (Wiccanism or Shinto perhaps), are spiritual, or just feel alive and energized by the full moon. While there apparently is a Facebook page advertising the drum circle that may include video or pictures, there's nothing really "formal" about the rest of the evening. Anyone and everyone can come out and be a part of it, and bring something, if they so desire. Some of the people just wanted to relax, while others wanted to twirl LED lit hulas around, or dance barefoot on the sand. Others used the opportunity to jump in the water or provide massages. You can bring an instrument such as a conga, samba whistle, tambourine, pan flute, bring props for dancing such as a hula hoop, fire instruments, LED lights or glow sticks, fiber optic whips (or not), or some food or drinks for yourself will do. You may even be offered drinks or food while there, among other things... Because of the full moon, some people can act all kinds of kooky. You can let yourself go and do anything, without fearing judgment. Some people howled, for example, while others stumbled around, talking to themselves. There are New Agers, hippies, hipsters, kids, dogs, singles, couples, friends...The best part is that it is safe. No one is going to come here and grope you (something that can and does happen in other parts of the beach, further south), and people look out for each other. There really is a great sense of togetherness here, and good chill vibes. If there is a lunar eclipse (as was the case this past weekend), then they hold the full moon party on the day prior to the eclipse (full moon night), and on the day of the eclipse as well. The best part of the night was the fire dancing. It's so mesmerizing, and the performers are incredibly talented. There was some great chemistry between two of the dancers, one of which included belly dancing in her routine, and it was so beautiful and erotic watching them dance by the edge of the waves! I am not sure if these people make a living as performers or if they have other day jobs, but the way they danced, it seemed like this was part of their profession. If not, then they are extremely skillful. Best of all, this performance is 100% free, and happens throughout the evening, sometimes from the same fire dancers, and other times, by other fire dancers present, which take turns. There were some people doing headstands, and there was also a didgeridoo player, who was garnering tons of attention for his unusual instrument and the vibrations it put out. While the police are supposed to show up around midnight to break up the multitudes, at 1:30 a.m. they had yet to come, so perhaps the police is relaxing their policy. It was a very fun and relaxing evening, and I'd love to come out again (and plan to) -- I just wish they would do this every weekend, regardless of whether there is a moon, perhaps to worship the ocean or the stars! This is a great way to relax and meditate while wrapping up a busy day. Bring some friends or come alone, everyone is welcomed. read more

My only wish is that they'd keep the circle bigger so as to make space for whoever wants to dance and that way we don't all end up smashed together as the frenzy of the drums starts to get in our system. read more

No hate, no racism, no bigotry, just peace and love. The night can get pretty packed so you need to go early to find parking close by and not have to walk too much. Plenty of police monitoring and keep and eye out, even though I have never heard anything bad happening. It starts at sundown and ends at midnight, cause that is when the police stops it. If you live in Miami, you have to go to at least one of the full moon parties.
