The barbecue sandwich was really really good. It has a nice amount of pork on the sandwich. It's one of my favorite barbecue restaurants in Birmingham. I also really like their coconut pie. My wife and I eat at this Full Moon location about once per week. I usually have the ribs and they are very good. The sauce is sweet and tangy. But today I decided to have a Catfish Plate. It was quite good. The crust was like what you would get on chicken fried steak - peppery and crunchy. The catfish itself was perfectly cooked. I loved my potato salad, too! My wife always gets the same thing, so she must really like it. A "Big Baker" with pulled pork. Sorry, I'm the type who dives in to my delicious food instead of posing it for pictures. PS - Oh. Full Moon in Hoover is a staple for me and my wife. I always like a burger and my wife goes for a loader Baker. At least once a month we'll order a pound of pork to go. ONE STAR. Look at the pictures.. Catfish plate. I went between 6:30-7:00pm. First, the moment I cut the fish, yellow liquid came out of the fish. The crust slid right off!. I hate the gray slime line in some catfish. This was loaded with it. As the crust completely collapsed, I realized what happened. The fish was undercooked in the middle. The breading was raw underneath. My cornbread was cooked in 2022. It was fossilized. They tried to put butter on it. The texture was a dehydrated sponge. This is my WORST experience at Full Moon. I am giving Full Moon on Patton Creek four stars because it has consistently been my favorite BBQ place in Birmingham, but I almost gave them three because I have been a little disappointed lately. The problem is that their pork can be quite fatty. This hasn't been the case. My husband says it is the way they slice it, and I do order sliced rather than chopped, but it used to not be this way. Other than that, they are a great place. For example, even when there is a line, it goes quickly. They have a lot of people behind the counter so things are run well. Also if there is a problem, they will fix it. I have been amazed that with so many people going through this restaurant especially at lunchtime that it stays clean and that you don't have to worry about finding a clean table. Regarding the food, my husband and son swear by the ribs. I get the pork plate and love their cole slaw. Not a lot of restaurants in Birmingham make vinegar based cole slaw, and I'm not a mayonnaise fan, so thank you Full Moon! I also like their baked beans. Another thing I like about Full Moon is that they use a red sauce instead of a vinegar based sauce. Vinegar sauces are okay, but I prefer red. Also, their cookies are to die for; chocolate chip with half the cookie coated in chocolate. I will definitely be back, but I hope they will do something about their fatty pork! read more

I never do reviews but I had to this time. DO NOT call in an order at this place. They never take your order down. I just left there to pick an order I called in and guess what? They didn't have it. Even though I called the right place. This is the second time this has happened. So don't call your order in you will have to go inside to place an order. I stopped by Full Moon in Hoover for a moon dog. The staff were extremely friendly and patient. There was a line due to it being lunch time, but the wait wasn't too long. The moon dog is a hotdog with chow-chow and bbq sauce. It normally is delicious but all of the toppings were wiped off by the foil the hotdog is wrapped in. I would suggest using a recyclable container that will not cause the sauce to be rubbed off. There were no Covid restrictions, but everyone wore gloves and hair nets if necessary. Ok so full moon has been around forever here in Birmingham- opened in 1986. While this may not be a legend like dreamland in Tuscaloosa... this is still a mighty fine bbq chain. We stopped by about 10 days ago. Had not been here in awhile and I noticed some menu changes mostly related to beer and wine additions. I ordered the chicken baker that is most assuredly the largest potato stuffed with the most food goodies I have ever seen. This will usually feed me for at least 3 meals. Sorry I forgot to take a pic but trust me that this thing is giant !!!! My daughter got the pork sandwich which is a good solid meat sandwich. The counter service is fast and efficient and they sling it to you within a few minutes. And those half moon cookies just can't be beat with the chocolate on one end and crunch on the other! read more

When the food is good, it's really good. Chicken bones in pulled chicken are a choking hazard though, and if you order through a delivery service (especially DD), some items are marked up $7+ than picking up directly from the restaurant. The wings in particular are priced more than double in app. So if you get their food, pick it up yourself and make sure to eat carefully so that you don't choke on stray bones. read more

Update Nothing has improved with this place. I ordered the chicken baker and when I got home and realized it was not even edible. A complete waste of ten bucks! The potato was hard as was the chicken. I will not be returning. Pulled in the drive through at 5:20 and ordered a big baker and a broccoli baker. I get to the window and the guy tells me after he swipes my card that broccoli takes 10-12 minutes to cook. At this point I have a serious attitude because he could have told me this at the speaker when I placed the order. Mind you it's 5:48 when I arrived at the window and now you want me to wait another 10-12 minutes. And in what world does it take 12 minutes to steam broccoli, especially using commercial equipment. Went at about 11:30 this morning. Typically pretty crowded at this time, however plenty of seats available today. I ordered the pig on a salad with a few customizations with a large sweet tea (best sweet tea you can get anywhere!!). My food was at the table in about five minutes and accurate as ordered. The pork was very good with very little fat. The salad was very fresh with no browning or wilting. On previous visits I have had a variety of the baked potatoes, pork sandwiches, and ribs. Good sides to compliment your order (onion rings are some of the best around) Would recommend for your BBQ or sweet tea fix. read more

We ordered the Whole Slab of Classic Ribs from the "Value Meals To Go!" menu. A full slab of pork ribs, sauce, two pint sides, bread, and cookies for 30.99. The ribs were ok. They were full sized spare ribs with a seasoning rub. The ribs are grilled/smoked on the pit that you can see from the counter when you place your order. Our ribs were heavily charred, and the smaller ribs were quite over cooked. The sauce was good, sweet and tangy, but not too tangy. The fresh white bread slices were soft and fresh, and did a great job of soaking up the sauce. For our sides we chose the baked beans and collard greens. The beans were good, not too sweet, and small smokey peices of pork were used for seasoning. I thought the collard green were very good. They were cooked just right and had a good flavor. I did not need any vinegar-pepper sauce to enhance. We also ordered a side of the chow-chow, and we thought it was very good. Chow-chow is a spicy relish and boy was it spicy. Very unique, and I would recommend everyone try it. The half moon cookies were pretty good. Pecans and chocolate chip cookie dipped in chocolate. The restauraunt was crowded and we did have to wait about 20 minutes for our order. They did a good job of packing everything to-go. I would recommend calling ahead if you are ordering a to-go. Went to Full Moon to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday. Everyone enjoyed their meals and pie and the manager, when he found out it was my mother-in-law's bday, brought her a container of the Full Moon cookies. That was unexpected and very much appreciated as a special gift. They also cut up a a pie into 7 slices and put on plates for our family, which the manager personally delivered to our table. They were very attentive to their customers. My only critique would be the brisket had way too much fat in it. I couldn't eat it, but my husband said it was good the next day for leftovers though he agreed there was quite a bit of fat. The shredded pork was good, but a little dry. Been here a few times already and finally getting around to writing a review. We ate on a Friday evening. It was busy as usual because they have many people who use the drive thru as well as phone in orders to pickup. Located on corner of Patton Chapel and 31, this Full Moon location is always busy and have a loyal following. Their interior is nicely decorated with booths, tables, large screen tvs and sports memorabilia everywhere. The owners have many framed photos with famous sport celebrities as well as autographed photos. You place your order at the counter, get your drinks, find a table and they'll bring your food to you. There are employees that regularly patrol the dining area in case you need something. Sarah ordered the child's plate BBQ sandwich with corn on the cob. The sandwich was Yuge! but it needed more sauce. They might leave off a lot of sauce in case kids don't like it, but who doesn't like bbq sauce?!? :) It comes with one of the famous half moon cookies... Yummmmm. Tammy ordered the brisket salad with Greek dressing. She reported that it was good especially the dressing which was nice and tangy. She said her brisket was ok. Matthew ordered the rib plate. It comes with a healthy portion of 4 large ribs smothered in their sauce. I thought their ribs tasted good, but it wasn't falling off bone good if you know what I mean. In fact, one of the ribs had a good bit of cartilage and the meat wasn't that tender. The mac and cheese was ok, but the collard greens was better. I tried the Soup and Salad. I tried the house salad with ranch. They give you a large portion of greens with a few slices of cucumber, tomatoes and plenty of cheese. Their ranch dressing is homemade and delicious. However I was unimpressed with their Brunswick stew. It has pieces of brisket, beans and some other veggies which I couldn't figure out in a dark soup base. I didn't really care for the taste and wish I would've ordered the chilli instead. It also arrived tempered to almost cold. I brought it back to the counter and asked them to nuke it for me for a minute. We will return here again. It's not the best bbq I've ever had, but they make a decent bbq. Best in town is the location on Hwy 31, I know there are several locations but every time I come to town I usually will go to the location closest to me just to see if they have gotten any better. The next visit is to Hwy31 that's just how it is, they always have all the sides desserts and BBQ that you would ever want, melt in your mouth tender everything is well seasoned you just can't get enough.
