We were in the area and craving ramen. We walked by this place and decided to have a late lunch there. The interior was surprisingly spacious. We were the only patrons there on a Wednesday. The hostess/waitress was friendly and quick. We started off with takoyaki which is a Japanese street food; it had minced octopus inside a creamy ball and lightly crunchy on the outside. There were 5 balls and these came out piping hot with a saucy topping; it was pretty good. For my entree, I had the tan tan ramen. It had sesame sauce, seasoned minced pork, scallions, and spinach. Not a fan.. our first clue should have been there was only one other couple in there addition to our group of four on a Saturday night. The person serving us was friendly and accommodating, however there was nothing special about the food. Everything was either bland or tasted off. It is nothing special food but not bad too. I gave them two stars because of their customer service. The hostess was a Chinese woman who was on the phone pretty much while I was eating. Not only she did speak loudly in the hallway but also used her speakerphone. We can hear their entire conversation. There was one group of customers around 5 pm. So the voice echoed inside entirely throughout the restaurant. When I entered, no "welcome" but just "how many" in a blunt way. When I ordered ramen, she raised her voice a bit and asked me "No egg, no egg"? I found out the egg was the addition. When you want to upsell the dish, say "Would you like to add an egg on your ramen?" Simple. She asked in the same way to the other table. That's her nature... rustling service. Make sure set your expectations at this place as if you go to a to-go bad Chinese pickup place. Then your dining experience would be ok. The food is 3.5. A dining experience may change drastically if you are provided bad customer service. I wouldn't go back to this place for sure. read more

Visited this restaurant tonight for the first (and last) time. Although the size of the restaurant is quite large most of the space was dark and looked like it was just being used for storage. It was actually kind of creepy. Very musty smell too back my the restroom. Perhaps this was a popular spot at one time but it certainly isn't now. Sadly, the entire place could use a good cleaning. Windows were extremely dirty - not a good sign. There were only four other people there besides us. We actually should have left before ordering but we almost felt sorry for the place. Waitress was loud and pushy. She kept pressuring us to order before we even had a chance to look over the menu. Food was bland and not very skillfully prepared. Not sure how this restaurant stays in business. Based on the amount of clientele in the dining room and the mediocre food my guess is they won't be surviving for very long. They tried charging $4.95 for one soda, $7.50 for the second same soda, and it was shown on the menu for $3.95. When I pointed it out, they did correct the $7.50 to $4.95. I just made my second visit here and ordered same dish as last time. This time was a big disappointment!! The minced pork was precooked and stored in refrigerator and then just put into the ramen broth without adequately heating it through. Similarly, the halved boiled egg was green and cold. Yuk! I brought my dismay to the attention of the waitress and she first said it was how they "always" made it! I told her that it wasn't like this on my first visit and furthermore - it was unhealthy to not thoroughly reheat a refrigerated precooked meat product. So, then she went into a tizzy and said she would remake it for me and spent the next 15 minutes screeching at the kitchen staff in whatever language it is that they speak. I had the chicken broth Ramen and I added a half boiled egg. The egg added a nice richness to the soup. The soup had seaweed that also gave a nice touch. The soup was bland along with chicken, so if your looking for a mild soup, this was it. They gave you 4 chunks of chicken and plenty of noodles . I also tried the Edamame beans. They were tender but firm and warm. The salt from the shell gave it a nice flavor. I thought they were a little pricey, but they gave you quite a bit. For those who want more pork slices without having to add it as an extra, go for their chashu ramen. The broth is the same as their tonkotsu ramen. The broth was one of the blandest ever. It felt more like a paitan chicken ramen broth vs. a true pork broth. While it was a cloudy broth, it was not milky in true tonkotsu fashion. It was not even salty or porky. Just bland. (+) Their spicy miso ramen was better. It was rich in miso flavor especially towards the bottom of the bowl with a slight spicy kick. I know it's much better when my husband doesn't even want to switch bowls with your tonkotsu. There are a lot of vegetables in this ramen, which is their own spin. With all the veggies, it felt like a Champon ramen (sliced carrots, cabbage, spinach, corn). (-) Takoyaki was clearly from the freezer. Center filling is liquidy and luke warm. In the past couple years more Ramen noodle bars and restaurants in CT have been opening up and unfortunately some closed down within a year of opening. For some reason Ramen has suddenly become more popular in CT and Fujiya Ramen was able to fulfill my Ramen cravings. First time I had real Ramen was in Queens, but of course there was none up here around that time. The Ramen I had down in NYC was A1, it was at a top end noodle bar and my wait was well worth it. The Ramen here at Fujiya was very comparable, obviously because Ramen is Ramen but the quality was very good. I had the Chashu Ramen, basically just ypur typical Ramen with extra pork. I really wanted to test the quality of their pork belly and it was very good. I didn't feel shorted out on the meat, the noodles had a chewier texture because it should, that's how fresh noodles are. But it wasn't super chewy which is good for me. The broth was great, tasty, not too salty. I've had salty Ramen before and we all know how that tastes. Nothing overpowering in this dish either, some flavors could be too much for some, but to me, this Ramen dish was so simple that it was just a comfortable bowl of Ramen. Perfect for a cold winter day. My pork bun that I had for appetizer was amazing as well, it had a nice sauce on it, and the bun was soft with a great texture as it should. Shrimp Tempura here was good but they don't use panko bread crumbs here, just the batter so heads up to those who do not prefer it. The staff was also very friendly and the person who I assume is manager or owner was dressed in a suit and tie making it seem extremely sophisticated but trust me, just relax and eat the Ramen. One last time, everything in my picture of my Chashu Ramen was everything that was in it. Like I said, very simple. I like it that way. For extra money you could add all the fancy stuff though, so spend as you please. Hopefully the upcoming Ramen trend won't be slow because some narrowminded people are afraid to eat food that doesn't look familiar to them. The cheap Ramen people eat litterally was just broth and noodles. They get intimidated when they see the real stuff but trust me, I approve that Fujiya is nice and simple for you lightweights. Fujiya Ramen will be my go to for now, the restaurant is very nice and clean inside as well. Prices go for about $13 per bowl, it's not as much food as Pho but it is equally as filling. Anyways, I'm just glad to find a Ramen place near me that doesn't have a bad reputation, staff is friendly, and can easily be the standard for Ramen around here. I am torn between a 3.5 and 4 (Yelp you really need to add .5 star options). While service was spot on and the ambiance clean and modern, I felt that the ramen itself was lacking in both execution and technique. I got the tonkatsu and the broth itself was thick to the point of being a stew or gravy rather than a broth. In addition, the flavor department was a bit lacking as well, being more on the side of bland-with none of the "funk" or umami associated with an intensely stewed broth. The ramen just had an identity crisis as a whole. Now this is a shame considering how good everything else they had was. They offered us a free mashed potato salad app, had nice and crispy takoyaki, and gave us free scallion/chive dumplings. I have no complaints about the apps. Some yummy ramen if you're around the area! A few locals have recommended this spot if you're looking to have your ramen fix. The interior was quite nice, very open. They had large tables as well to host bigger parties. My boyfriend and I came in for lunch on Saturday and we were seated immediately. The menu was pretty big with photos as reference. Our server was very quick and made the whole process smooth and easy. For apps, we got the takoyaki and the pork buns (2). Both came steaming hot! Then for ramen we got the spicy miso ramen and the chicken broth chatsu ramen (there were a lot of scallions/spinach FYI). Very different flavors, but don't disappoint!! We got extra pork, eggs and ramen as well. I was quite happy and satisfied at the end of our meal. Only thing I'd complain about would be the bowls. They were quite narrow at the bottom and big at the top. It made it difficult as I was reaching the end to spoon any broth remaining. It does however keep the ramen warm as I continued eating. Sooo excited to have a ramen place open in Middletown! We decided to stop in for lunch on Sunday after running some errands around town, only 3 days after they opened. The inside is beautiful...Looks like they put some work into the decor. You would never guess that it's located in the former home of a fro yo shop. The employees were all super nice and helpful. But unfortunately, we weren't head over heels about the ramen. My husband got the chicken broth ramen. Broth was bland - tasted like unflavored broth from a can, and the chicken was sketchy - gray and fatty. He didn't eat the chicken at all. It looked that way in the photos on the menu, so unfortunately, I don't think this was a fluke. He ate some of the noodles but the broth was so bland that he wasn't really into it. I ordered the tan tan men ramen which had well cooked and seasoned chopped pork in it. It was good and my broth was a little more rich than his was, but still felt like the flavors had not fully developed. It was also very light on meat which was a disappointment for $12. The pork belly looked gross in the photos on the menu, so we stayed away from that. I would have liked to try the spicy miso, but was not in the mood to get a big slab of unrendered fat in my soup. We got one order of extra noodles, which they bring on the side so we were able to share. We had also ordered the pork gyoza, which were tasty. Overall, it wasn't a great value for the price. Other ramen places have soups with more flavor and often more components. At Fujiya, the soups are very basic and add ins are available for extra cost - most $2 each. We are new to the authentic ramen world and I will preface this review with our first foray into authentic ramen was two weeks ago in Chinatown in Boston and based on that experience our bar seems to have been set pretty high. We tried Fujiya Ramen last evening and first impression as we walk in was a little concerning based on how few people were in the restaurant. The restaurant is nice and clean. Our server was friendly and greeted right away. We started with the veggie Yaki-Gyoza steamed and when compared to the ones we had in Boston their were not filled with near as much filing and the filing was mushy. Not sure but seemed like they might have been frozen vs made on site. I had the spicy miso ramen and my wife had the miso ramen. She added a hard boiled egg. The broth in mine was just the right amount of spice for me, not overly spicy but enough to know it was the spicy version. Overall average when compared to the other experience we had in Boston. This amount of accoutrements in the ramen was slightly lacking, I.e not enough cabbage, corn etc. We will be back after trying other places in CT and give them another try. read more

In town for my sons swim meet at the college and I had to sneak away to try Fujiya Ramen. I ordered the Yaki-Gyoza (7.00) for five pork dumplings and they were delicious. The bottoms were crispy, and the rest of the dumpling skin was super tender. The filling, scallions, porky goodness. Paired with hot chili oil and vinegar, adding a nice tangy zip to cut through that porky goodness. I also had the Miso Ramen (13.00) pork belly chashu, scallions, minced corn, carrots, onions and cabbage. First look, beautiful opaque miso broth offset by the bright green scallions and the aroma of miso pork a scallions is mouth watering. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the pork belly was tender and had hints of soy and miren. A very good Ramen! Ill be back to try the spicy miso next time and more of these amazing dumplings. We weren't sure what we wanted, but we knew we had consistently written Fujiya ramen off because we were worried about being disappointed. While this was not necessarily the case, it was wildly average and not something we would seek out. The décor is exactly what it should be for a ramen joint, but because of the abundant spacing in Middletown real estate, it just looked unfilled. There was this awkward "dance-floor"-esque space in the middle right in front of the open-kitchen/bar area that felt uncomfortable and unoccupied. It was not very crowded when we went at 4 PM on a Saturday. We tried the takoyaki, seaweed salad, Tonkatsu ramen, and Spicy miso ramen. Everything came extremely quickly - while we were waiting I saw the gentleman in the back creating everything, which was a cool experience. The seaweed was standard fare, and the takoyaki was yummy, but it wasn't anything special. It was a bit too gooey in the middle, but it had all the flavours and sauces right. As for the ramens, I was slightly disappointed in both with respect to the broths. When I have ramen, I am usually overwhelmed by how umami the broths are, to the point of over-saltiness, but this time I got none of that - the Tonkatsu was bland, while the Spicy miso tasted like a miso soup base that had gotten a few squirts of Sriracha in it. It felt as though the broths weren't slow-cooked to infuse any pure flavours inside. While the noodles themselves were the right texture, the pork-belly was clearly one that had been baked as a pork tenderloin as opposed to slow-roasting, and it was served cold atop the noodles, which was unfortunate. This little Ramen place is tucked with in the other little shops and restaurants along Main St in downtown Middletown. We stopped for lunch during the week and found it pleasantly semi-packed. The decor was plain with a lot of brown, and it felt like we were underground with the huge industrial pipe running around the ceiling. Service was very good. The older Asian gentleman well dressed in a suit, I assume was the owner or manager, as he checked on every table after meals were brought out to make sure everyone was satisfied. We were checked on regularly by our server and had our water glasses refilled timely. I decided to get the charsiu ramen that came with extra charsiu pieces. I enjoyed my ramen; the noodles were Harte and very fresh, possibly made on site. The broth was flavorful and the charsiu pork belly pieces were delicious. The only downside was that it costed extra for any add ons, I added a soft boiled egg for an extra dollar. In comparison to a couple other ramen places I've been to, I think this place is a bit more pricey with no add ons, but hey we're in Connecticut. So, I convinced my family to dine at Fujiya Ramen tonight because of the positive Google Reviews. Big mistake; I should've checked Yelp. Being Japanese myself, I can say with complete conviction that the noodle soup I ordered was absolutely NOT authentic Japanese ramen, despite the very Japanese name of the restaurant. The overpriced tonkotsu ramen was incredibly flavorless; the broth had no hint of being prepared with pork bones or kombu, which gives real Japanese ramen its creaminess, depth and flavor. The curry we ordered tasted like curry, but the chicken it came with had an odd texture, as if it wasn't really chicken. I don't even want to know what that mystery meat was. The miso soup that accompanied our curry and my son's Gyu Don dish, similar to the ramen broth, was also missing actual miso flavor. My son remarked that the soup "tastes like slightly flavored water," and after sampling it, he wasn't lying. They charge $13.50 for a very small kids meal that consisted of cheese sticks, fries and a tiny cubed fish stick bun. Not worth it. Bubble tea was served with way too much ice and not enough boba and at $7.50 each, was a total rip off. We were rushed to order despite no one being in the restaurant and rushed to pay, but thank goodness I looked at the check because we were charged for an extra bubble tea. We received no apology when it was removed from the check, and our lady server even tried to tell me the new check amount was more than it should be. I made her correct it with the actual price the check should've been. All in all, we spent an incredible amount of money for such underwhelming food. The space is definitely very big, so given that it wasn't very full, the space felt a little awkward and sterile. As for the menu, there's a lot to choose from. I was glad to see a different types of ramen and a nice selection of appetizers to start. We started with the pork belly bao, rock shrimp, and fried chicken. Unfortunately, most of these are very underwhelming. The pork belly bao were not very big, and the greens were the most flavorful element in the bun. The fried chicken was also not very tasty and definitely needed the side of sauce; it was also nice once dipped in my ramen broth. On the other hand, the rock shrimp was too creamy, doused with the same sauce ahead of time. My ramen was ok. I got the Tan Tan. I wish there had been more inside the bowl, though I did like the broth. My friend's spicy miso was also ok, though it was a little underwhelming in the spice category. Overall, Main Street definitely benefits from the ramen place, but overall the restaurant didn't really wow me. Since it's opened I've been here often and have tried so many delicious menu items. The appetizers here are so delicious; I haven't had one that I didn't enjoy. I really love their gyoza (it tastes fresh and homemade and delicious), their pork and chicken chashu buns, the takoyaki, karage (fried chicken!!), and their tempura (which is covered in batter rather than panko FYI). Additionally, they have a pretty nice selection of sake and a pretty tasty and reasonably priced warm sake. The ramen, as I mentioned before, is great, albeit not comparable to ramen in NYC.
