Fusion restaurant with mostly Japanese items with Thai and Chinese influences. We got the following ** chicken karaage- 5/5- moist and yet well cooked and flavorful chicken. The chicken seems to have been marinated in baking soda to ensure it's that soft. We loved this dish. **curry noodle soup- 4/5- we got two versions of this. One with the original thick udon noodle and the other with thin rice noodles. The udon noodle version reigned supreme. The curry in this case was similar to the Thai coconut curry style. **chicken ramen-3.5/5- it lacked a depth of flavor in the broth though on the surface it had all the makings of a good bowl of ramen. **veggie gyoza-4.5/5- the filling was flavorful. Doused in their sauce, it was delicious. **thai fried rice with chicken- 4.5/5- rice was moist and umami rich. Chicken was soft. Though it was not pineapple fried rice, they had pieces of pineapple as well. Though I am not a fan of fruit in my fried rice, it was surprisingly delectable. We read later that the place is actually run by a Chinese family. They make Japanese food as their kids love the cuisine. They also have a lot of boba based drinks. We got a couple of varieties, family loved them, for me they were too sweet. read more

Ramen joints in Southeast Connecticut are few and far between and AJ Noodle Bar fills the gap with some solid offerings in a very casual space. The service is very attentive and pleasant and the food is fresh and well prepared. It may be hard to find as it's tucked away in a corner of a strip mall, but clearly a well-known local establishment. If you're in the area it's a reliable option worth the stop. read more

I got ramen the pork gyoza and the shumai overall it was pretty bland. The ramen was close to flavorless, the gyoza was freezer burned and the pork was mushy the shumai was mushy. The service was fine and nice environment however the food was very bad read more

Went to AJ Noodle Bar last night for the first time. Deciding what to eat was not an easy task because as I looked around at what other people were eating and I looked through the menu I wanted to try it all! I made a good decision as I ordered the Curry soup with seafood. Wow the flavors were complex and amazing... I find when ordering curry dishes people tend to either overdo the seasoning or not have enough well this dish was perfect!! The seafood in the dish was fresh tasting and overall it will be hard to go there again and try anything else!! And yes, I will be returning! Loving this addition to Old Saybrook, AJ Noodle Bar! Before, the closest ramen or bubble tea place was in Middletown. We were greeted by a super sweet woman (I'm assuming she's the owner?) when we entered and guided us to choose our seats. It felt very welcoming. AJ Noodle Bar's menu is simple and has all the classics gyozas, pork buns, rice dishes, stir-fry, ramen and more. We tried the Vegetable Ramen and Bulgogi Fries with Taro and Thai Coffee Bubble Tea. Everything was delicious. The ramen was a big serving of noodles with fried tofu, zucchini, mushrooms, carrots and bok choy. The Bulgogi Fries were a big hit too and highly give them a try. We ordered it with the mayo and spicy sauce on the side. Share it or have it as your meal, it's very filling and satisfying. The bubble tea was so good, the boba lightly sweeten and boba cooked perfectly. AJ Noodle Bar is tucked in the plaza with the AAA office and the Paperback Cafe on Main Street. Love that it's in the plaza because of the parking lot! The restaurant is small inside, but is very busy. There is bar like seating at the window looking out to the parking lot and tables that could hold 4-6 people. On spring or summer days, there is outdoor seating too. It does seem they do a lot of takeout orders and you can order online. If I am in the Old Saybrook, I would love to stop by again to try more. I can't wait to try some of there desserts like Green Tea Tiramisu (we were too full this trip)! read more

A solid spot to get ramen and rice bowl in the area. It's a small cozy spot and our group of 7 was able to push 2 tables together during lunch. If you have more than 7 people I would recommend calling ahead though. We had the Tonkutsu ramen, beef rice bowl, fried gyoza, takoyaki and fried shumai. The broth and ramen itself was just a tad bland but the charsui pork was very flavorful and tender. The beef rice bowl was good and really flavorful. My daughter enjoyed the gyoza and shumai. Is it the best ramen? No. This is also a ramen shop in the burbs... of Connecticut... keep that in mind. However with that said, if you're craving a decent bowl of hot ramen or rice bowl, AJ Noodle Bar will hit the spot. Nice small, cozy little nook of a restaurant. Little hard to find from the road, but visible clearly when you get into the parking lot. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We kind of knew what we wanted as we had looked online. So it didn't take too long for us to order. Food was prepared quickly and came out all at once. We had ordered two types of Ramen, the Miso and the Tonkotsu. Both were delicious, although we favored the Tonkotsu one more. Portions were good as it filled us up. We ordered the House fried rice to try that as well. It was good, but we had to bring home the leftover. Compared to other Asian style restaurants we have been to, the fried rice was one of the better ones we had tasted. We also ordered the Chashu rice bowl, which was a meal in itself! My wife and I dined at AJ Noodle Bar and were again delighted with our meal. We started the meal with a Seaweed Salad appetizer that was generous and tasted phenomenal. The restaurant is tucked away in the back of the plaza, but the outdoor dining area was really nice and if it wasn't blazing hot we probably would've opted to eat outside. We ordered the Pork Buns, Miso Ramen, and Tonkotsu Ramen. You were able to order from a QR code on the table which was convenient and our food came out relatively quickly. Everything tasted great, and I'm usually not a huge fan of a Miso base but I really really liked their broth!! This delightful little noodle bar is located in Porter Plaza in Old Saybrook next to Triple A office and a very nice consignment store (Fantasia). Indoor and outdoor seating available. While waiting for my to go order, I heard a gentleman complimenting the quality of his food, and found out that the owners had a previous location in Fairfield County. I had the vegetable tempura with salad option. The salad greens, and veggies were very fresh, and the light salad dressing was devine- what was left on the bottom i poured over my rice- too good to waste. A small little place with such big flavor! First off I love how tech savvy they are! To get the menu, you scan a QR code and place your order right on the link from there it prints out the order request and the turnaround time for food is quite quick! If you prefer the old-school hard, menu method they have that too! We went on a cold early winter day to have some Ramen. My husband has his preferred Ramen spot, and we were trying to see if this one appealed to him because it was a little closer. The nice woman working there was so attentive and willing to answer any question when we were trying to figure out what to order. Fantastic!!! I live in suburban Boston, visiting family in CT. AJ Noodle Bar puts in lots of effort to prepare the fully home-made tonkatsu ramen that I ordered. It was great! My folks had stir fry w/ noodles, whose "lightness" and incredible taste were really notable. I am excited to return again and again to try the other ramen dishes too. I had my first meal at AJ's tonight. They opened two weeks ago and the place seems to already be getting a crowd at meal time. The owner and staff members are SO nice and came around while we were eating. It's casual- you order at the counter and then they bring you your food to the table. I had the beef bulgogi ramen, and we also shared the pork buns and agedashi. Everything was piping hot and delicious and so flavorful. The bowls of soup are huge portions.
