Ordered online, went in after 30 minutes, server said it would be ready in a few, then a few turned into over ten minutes then I asked again and he said "oh a few more minutes" then ten more minutes. Went in around 7 pm, didn't receive order till 7:50 pm for just 3 specialty rolls. No waitress checked in with us regarding the extremely long wait or bothered to provide a glass of water. Speed of service is horrible. You could be the only customers in the place and in the past we have been and it's still incredibly slow. So 5 Stars just for having mackerel! Sushi bar shows a small selection and I suspected no mackerel. Got it coming though. Also a raw roll and another selection. Is early for dinner crowd which works for me. Great service. The raw roll is very small. Mackerel is most always 2 slices and $4. Plenty and same here. This is my sushi save heaven. I am a world traveler and have eaten sushi in 20 plus countries, but Fuji is the place that I would always love to go back to. They have so many options for sushi rolls, the consistency in the taste and the quality of the products used makes this place one of the most respected sushi places I have ever visited. I highly recommend the birthday roll and the spicy girl roll. And for non sushi eaters try any of the Japanese stakes you'll love'm. In terms of sushi I would say that Fuji is okay. My first time ordering some rolls they mixed up one of the rolls with one containing eel, which I'm not a fan of. Some of their other rolls that say they have lobster on top has a pureed lobster paste instead. They are the closest sushi spot to me though so I do visit them periodically when the sushi mood strikes me. They do win as best sushi spot in Portage though there is no real competition in the area so it's more a victory by default. Song in New Buffalo, MI wins out for me in terms of sushi though they are a bit further. Besides sushi they do have cooked dishes as well. D loved their ginger pork meal. Service also is pretty good and the one time D and I ate in the restaurant I got to order a couple of new rolls (Tango Roll & Yellow Stone) they were experimenting with, which both were very good. Hopefully those make the main menu. So at least they're willing to try new ideas. read more

This place is phenomenal! Better sushi than any of those expensive sushi chains, great variety, economical, and spotlessly clean! You can tell the staff care about their business. Everything is fresh, you can watch your food being made in the back kitchen or the sushi bar. Myself i order to-go and have an Ichiban beer while i wait. I love the Tobiko, and Yellow Fin rolls. Pretty much the only place I know of that you can get sushi in Portage. Pretty decent stuff as well. When I ordered we had Tempura and a California Roll sushi. The Tempura was pretty good, and I really liked the California Roll. The inside of the place is really cozy and atmospheric. Lots of Japanese style furniture and everything looks very authentic. I'd definitely recommend. Edit: Recently visited again. The owners are awesome and very helpful. I picked up a Godzilla this time around and it was like heaven in my mouth. Seriously. Price and quality is comparable (and in some cases better) than Chicago stuff, right here in portage. Excellent. read more

This is my go to sushi place because of how close it is and how consistent the quality is. The only thing I feel is missing is RAMEN. Some authentic ramen would really be the cherry on top for this place. The sushi though is great, my favorite is the crazy roll, and they also have good lunch specials during the week. read more

We were frequently going here until our most recent visit disgusted us. There was hardly any rice on the sushi rolls you could see the seaweed right through the rice. Rice is so cheap too I was appalled. When I went to complain about the inadequate rolls & that I have never seen sushi made like this the lady was a smart aleck and said I must be use to buffets! So we left still hungry but paid $ 75.00 for our meal for family of 4. Never again they lost our business! House of Kobe or Chicago sushi joints from now on. Update: There is also a new place in Chesterton, IN called Musashi that's much better! Okaido in Michigan City, Furin and Bangkok in Valpo is great too! read more

Wow, excellent fresh sushi at very reasonable prices. This place lived up to expectations, and is a great value. We had the sushi-sashimi combo, chirashi, and chicken teriyaki bento box. All were excellent, and this place will benchmark Japanese cusine for us in Northwest Indiana. There's not a lot of choices as far as we know (and we have tried House of Kobe in Merillville for the hibachi dining). Parking is very convenient, as it is in a strip mall. I have a thing for close restaurant parking. It's also a BYOB place, and there are no charges for that. The dining room is one cozy room, with not a lot of tables (maybe 12 -15). The menu was extensive with a lot of choices, more than we're used to seeing at a Japanese place. The hostess and waitress were courteous and friendly Chinese, but the food was definitely Japanese. It was a very enjoyable Valentine's Day dinner for us. read more

I'll keep it brief. Based on some reviews that claimed - by people eating sushi all over the world--that this place is a gem we went. Should have known better. The presentation was not good. The rolls were uneven and in some spots there was no rice and on the other end a glob of rice. The spicy tuna was more like spicy ground tuna. It tasted okay but it definitely was ground pulp flavored up. Very unimpressed. Yes it was cheap but sushi is not something where you want to distrust ingredients. Lastly the udon: overly salted broth. Downright inedible. I did not like this place, only redeeming factor was price but... no Thanks. And the self proclaimed world traveller must be on a tight budget if he thinks this place is among the best. Nuts. I've been coming here for a long time and if your in the valpo area this is the place to come for sushi. There chef here is always quick and makes very good rolls or traditional sashimi if you prefer that. I recommend drying the dream roll with eel sauce, beside sushi they have a large list of other dishes including youdon (spelled that wrong) and fried rice Japanese style which is delicious as well.
