BLUF: Excellent sushi, friendly staff, and a clean restaurant. I'd consider this one of my top 3 sushi restaurants. I got a California Roll, a Pacific Roll, and a Shrimp Crunchy Roll. The Shrimp Crunchy roll had cream cheese, which I'd never had before, and I was surprised at how much it enhanced the flavor. The Pacific Roll is my new favorite roll of all time, and though pricy, it is worth the money and filling! My only gripe is that the iced tea didn't taste freshly brewed and is likely store-bought or commercially distributed. This isn't even a complaint; it's just an FYI if you are a tea person. It's one of the better sushi places, in my opinion, in the area! The service is always great, our server Dylan was very attentive to us and made sure we were taken care of! I enjoy the nice quiet, low-key atmosphere.They have a different variety of sushi compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. It was refreshing to try new rolls! I would normally order Chinese dragon rolls and black dragon rolls when I'd crave sushi. I went here when it first opened around 2016. A classic go-to for me was the Beef Yakisoba. I remember it tasting pretty authentic. Had a bold rich flavor with the meat and veggies. In 2021, I got the Beef Yakisoba again... It was so bland. There was no thick sauce, no carrots which are main stables in yakisoba. The yakisoba lacked flavor. Any flavor at all came from the bitter bean sprouts. I was hoping this year would change that. I got the Shrimp Yakisoba to switch it up. I asked for them to put Yakisoba sauce on the side. No, it still is very bland with little to no flavor. The Yakisoba sauce didn't do much to save it. I'm glad I had enough Asian sauces at home to flavor it myself. Now, why the two stars if I hated the Yakisoba? Well their sushi is really good. I have no problem with that. It tastes extra fresh. First time, I got the salmon, eel and to be adventurous, octopus. All were excellent. Last time I went I got the Richie roll. Nothing beats the flavor of unagi sauce. Lastly, the other dishes I tried here was their Chicken Teriyaki Hibachi with fried rice and the house soup. The chicken had the typical sweet and savory flavor you get in teriyaki. But I felt like the rice needed some extra time to cook as it was quite dry. The house soup just french onion soup. It good if you want a familiar taste but I highly recommend the miso soup for that authentic Japanese flavor. Overall, highly recommend coming here for their sushi and having some miso soup on the side. read more

Yes the food is good it's actually pretty great sometimes but the staff are not nice. I've never eaten in, only gotten takeout. The way the staff is doing takeout not sure I could handle them during a meal inside. Don't order edamame it's usually not a very large portion and no salt. Everything else is really tasty. Tried this place for the first time on a Friday. Ordered to go spicy tuna roll, hibachi salmon for kids, and pad Thai with shrimp. To eat while waiting i ordered the yellowtail nigiri and shrimp and vegetable tempura. To start with I normally don't expect fresh fish out in these parts but this was pretty fresh, well cut and very tasteful. The shrimp and veggie Tempura was good, wasn't oily and but breaded heavily. The rest of the food I took home for the family. The spicy tuna roll was surprisingly as delicious as the nigiri. The kids hibachi salmon was ok from what my daughter told me. The pad Thai wasn't that great, it lacked a lot of veggies. For the pad Thai I wasn't expecting much. Normally when an Asian spot sells sushi and Thai food and the restaurant has a sushi bar then the Thai food is usually secondary. I only ordered the pad Thai because I was avoiding meat that day (lent) and I knew sushi would not be enough. Overall the sushi was great, stay away from non Japanese cuisine. A one price per person and you get a piece of everything. A piece of paper with all of them listed and you can mark down your new favorites. The food was good until I found a 6 inch black hair (I'm blonde) wrapped around two pieces of my sushi. The restaurant was quiet and I didn't want to make a scene so I discreetly told our waitress. She still charged me for the roll even though the hair clearly wasn't mine. Okay, so, first off we did have a little bit of a wait being seated. It was about a 15-20minute wait because the place was packed with people. I am so glad we waited, too. We started off with the Gyoza as an appetizer which is a fried pork dumpling. It was pretty great and so was the Miso soup. For an entree I decided on the Chicago roll and spicy tuna rolls. Both of these were so well worth the wait. Typically, when I want sushi I have to go to town and country or the local Strack's while they do have some pretty good, reasonably priced sushi made by sushi chefs on sight, this was even better. Husband got the rib eye hibachi. That steak was melt in your mouth delicious. He is a man from Texas and as a Texan he loves his steak probably more than his wife. This brought a very manly tear to his eye. I know we are going to drop a pretty penny here but it is definitely worth the money and the wait for some hella delicious food. read more

I was visiting a friend from out of town and we were looking for a local place to get sushi. After reading reviews, we decided to go here and I ordered a California roll, miso soup, edamame and hot tea. My friend ordered one of the speciality rolls (that I'm forgetting the name of now). The miso soup was average but was nothing to write home about. The edamame came out on a very small plate (which is unusual for edamame) and it was also average. The sushi however was when things went completely downhill. The "sushi" was chewy, tasted old and overall, lacked taste. For the record, we both ordered "spicy" rolls which normally hides the taste of bad fish but this was not the case! We both were unable to finish the roll we ordered even though we were starving! We ended up grabbing food elsewhere. I understand that Michigan isn't know for their sushi and I'm used to eating mediocre sushi but this was not good. The only thing that we enjoyed here was the hot tea which was splendid. Their sushi is not something I would recommend. read more

I'm a big fan of hibachi style food, but the cost of places like House of Kobe or BC Osaka makes it not something I can enjoy often. There used to be a small place in Merrillville called Ichibans-but they closed. Lo and behold my shock when I discovered Musashi.
