Sushi in New York? Are you sure you really wanted to have sushi on Roosevelt Island? This was everyone's question while on a work visit in New York, to be specific, at Roosevelt Island. Actually, we took the Roosevelt Island Tramway to visit this small island next to two rivers on the east side of New York. After walking and shopping for hours, we wanted to have lunch and here was Fuji Bistro Sushi Restaurant. Located near the center of the island, we tried their sashimi and they seemed to have us large cuts of sashimi, rice and miso soup. We also ordered their lunch combo which came with fresh salad; a cup of green tea accompanied the lunch. It was a small sushi restaurant which can accommodate about 20 people, had outside tables and their bathroom was clean. The staff were nice and our orders came on time. Great nook to have some Sit down time after a long walk on the island. read more

Honestly the customer service at this place is ridiculous and I'm tired of experiencing the same thing every time I come here the lady working consistently has an attitude, makes customers feel unwelcome, and acts like basic customer service is too much to ask for. No friendliness, no "thank you," " good night " how are you" no effort to make customers feel appreciated. She just hands you your food and makes you feel like she's rushing you out the door. Today, she tried to charge me $1 for a tiny container of sauce, and that was the cherry on top. It's not even about the dollar. It's about the principle. If I'm coming into your business and spending my hard-earned money, the least you can do is treat me with basic respect and provide decent customer service. Nobody expects you to be overly friendly or fake, but a simple greeting, a little courtesy, and a thank-you should not be that difficult. Customers are the reason your business stays open, and people should not have to deal with an attitude every time they walk through the door. What makes it worse is that this is not a one-time experience. It's a repeated pattern, and it genuinely makes me not want to return. Good food is not enough to make up for consistently poor customer service. I will gladly spend my money somewhere else where I'm treated like a paying customer instead of an inconvenience. Management seriously needs to address this. read more

honestly eating here now and the sushi chef and the servers are all eating on the floor and not a single one of them washed their hands before returning to service! not only is this a health code violation but I'm genuinely confused....there are guests in the restaurant. read more

Walk in party of 2, seated immediately. The place has lots of space and looks like your typical neighborhood sushi place. We got the shareable platter of sushi and sashimi, which ended up being around $60 for a lot of sushi. The quantity was definitely there but the quality was eh. Nothing special. Service was great. read more

Location: Roosevelt Island Service: Normal, nothing so special. Ambiance: clean and fresh bathroom (unisex) Food: We had sushi; Black Dragon Roll--taste great, Calamari--Not too meaty with sweet Katsu gravy (unique but taste okay among other Calamaris I've tried) the coat is overpowering the meat. Gyoza--tasted great. Miso soup--taste normal but compared to other miso soups I've tried, this one has less tufo and seaweeds. Tempura shrimp-- meaty and tasted so good-- just for the sauce I'd prefer the sweet and sour for it. Tempura Ice cream- Taste good according to my husband. Gave 4 star cause over all from service to cleanliness I admired it. read more

I was really confused with how delicious my dining experience here was. Went to Roosevelt Island for the first time and after biking around, walking, and exploring the area for a few hours, we felt like stopping for some food. For whatever reason, my stomach was telling it it wanted sushi, so I looked sushi up in Google maps and this spot popped up as the only? option in the area. It was quiet when we came in but we were promptly seated and greeted by one of the waitresses here. We tried the sushi/sashimi plate for 2 which came with approximately 35-45 pieces of nigiri/sashimi and sushi in total. I felt like for the price it was solid (especially for NYC) and was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the fish tasted too. Not the spot I would have expected to have good quality sushi (the area seems a bit touristy to me in some ways), but nonetheless I was more than happy and not about to complain! I'm not quite sure if I would venture here just for the food but if I am in the area I will definitely come back here again! read more

Came here for lunch the other day. The lunch special box is a pretty good value, as it comes with rice, miso soup (or salad), a california roll, the entree, and 2 fried shumai. The taste and quality was fair, nothing too special, but not bad either. The fried shumai were a bit odd to me since I've never had them fried before. Out of the various choices we got at my table, the pork katsu was probably the best, followed by the chicken teriyaki, then the kara age, and lastly the salmon teriyaki. Overall, it did the job of filling us up, although nothing particular to write home about. read more

Fuji East Japanese Bistro - 7. Kara Age Lunch Box - Sushi Bars Near Me - New York, New York

Hubs and I decided to be Roosevelt Island tourists on one of those holiday Mondays about 4 yrs ago. After absorbing more history than we already knew about the island and walking aimlessly, Fuji East landed on our laps. Fuji's design is ultra organized. My sushi was very basic, nonetheless fresh and rolled nicely. Plus service as I remember, was pleasant. So if you hop on the Roosevelt Island Tramway, branch out this way for a quick sushi lunch. read more

Mediocre food, misleading price, and bad service. The food is just so-so. And for lunch I ordered a $15 lunch combo of teriyaki beef and miso soup. It comes out that there was just six slices of beef. I mean you can have a higher price but if you mark it as a lunch combo you should give something that is enough for a real lunch. And when we check out, the waiter chased out and ask for a 15% tip. We originally gave about 12%. That's really absurd. They didn't serve much at all! read more

I still love these guys - I usually get take-out at least once a week - it's conveniently right next door to my apartment. I always give them a tip even though I'm picking up because I want them to succeed and stay there forever. My new favorite order is the tofu ankake. If you had told me when I was ten years old that one day I would crave a dish of tofu, red and green peppers, onions, broccoli and carrots I'd have thought you were crazy. But I love it - I don't know what they put in that ankake sauce but it's so good. And it comes with a helping of white rice and a small green side salad. And unless they are putting crack in the ankake sauce, it's gotta be super-healthy too! read more

Excellent food and service! The Teriyaki Shrimp was especially yum! Highly recommend.

Sushi pieces are larger than average so price is quite reasonable, especially for NY. Miso soup was also in a larger than average bowl (not the usual miso soup bowl). Kara age was with white meat. Age dashi tofu was fried well (thin coating of batter). Place is clean and staff is nice. Solid place. read more

This is a solid neighborhood sushi place with high-quality food and both indoor and outdoor seating. I had the Chirashi Sushi and the fish was thick and really soft, although it was served in a pile and the rice was in another pile--not the way I've previously had the dish, but it was fine, really. I live around the corner. Please come to RI and help keep our restaurants open! This place is great! read more

Excellent sushi here! I've been several times and never been disappointed. The shrimp tempura is probably my favorite regular roll, the American Dream is a great Fuji specialty. My boyfriend loves the mango chicken, they serve it in right out of a fresh mango! Food is ready quickly, served with excellent presentation, and is always delicious. read more

I love the sushi and steamed vegetable gyoza appetizer at this restaurant. I have ordered takeout from them about 20 times since living here, and every time the order has been correct, on time, fresh, and the staff have been super nice. Food was great- super quick and really cute little spot on the island. definitely recommend

The veggie fried rice ($7) was so good! It came with egg (good fried rice always has egg), beans, broccoli, carrots, onion, kale, and about 2 pieces of Lotus root. For garnish, there was a beautiful flower. All the veggies were crispy which I loved but a few of the sliced bean pieces (the flatter version of string beans) had small black dots all over; were spotted. The rice was buttery and just delicious! I just wish the serving was bigger & there was more lotus root. I feel like other places have bigger servings. I was satisfied but it was so good that I wanted more. read more

I have been going here for years ( there are not too many places to eat for the residents of Roosevelt Island). However, the food is pretty good and their special rolls are quite creative. I typically get the various bento boxes. The service is pretty prompt. I disagree with people who say the waitresses are cold. Instead, I will say that they are "efficient". Great place to go if you take the tram for a visit to the "little apple in the big apple". read more

Fuji East Japanese Bistro - Nice dinner on the island. - Sushi Bars Near Me - New York, New York

Giving this place five because the staff is extremely hard working, excellent customer service always and if I don't have sushi on Roosevelt island I would die. LOL . I have always just ordered standard basic rolls but I always get the specialty lobster roll it's a must. However!!! They need to get larger wine glasses. I feel like I'm sipping wine from a tea cup. Better off to buy a bottle if you're going to get two glasses because it's seriously a rip off. It's awkward when someone orders 4 glasses of wine when really they only had 2... They also need to renovate the outdoor seating.. it does not look appealing. They have too many tables crammed inside , I really didn't want to hear the next tables conversation. Despite that, I'll be back because this place is great! read more

I'm from Vancouver, Canada where I believe has one of the best sushi places outside of Japan. So I have to admit that I have an expectation when it comes to sushi and that also means that I normally don't go to mediocre Japanese restaurants, but this place was the only option on Roosevelt Island. Ordered Alaska Roll and Long Island Roll for takeout. Surprisingly, it didn't take long. One star for the fast service! But when I came home and started eating them, I found a small piece of a plastic piece from one of the Long Island rolls. And NO, it wasn't a grain of rice although it looked like one. It felt plasticky and almost like an egg shell. Glad I didn't swallow it. I can't wait to go back to Vancouver for fresh sushi. read more

My wife is allergic to cucumber. We asked for no cucumber in our california roll and they tried to add +$2 to our order for "specialty" order. Is this a joke? I've eaten at many Japanese restaurants and never came across something so bizarre. The food was below sub par and the person on phone was rude to talk to. Won't be ordering here again. read more

Great fast service. Good Japanese. All around very good and worthwhile. They should have more stars in my opinion

As the only sushi on the island, it's a good thing it's decent. I probably eat here 2-3 times a month. It's good enough we keep going back, nothing outstanding but the service is always good. Can only speak to the veggie options but those are always consistent. Lunch special sushi is a pretty good deal with 3 rolls and a soup or salad. Staff is always nice :) read more

Fast and quality sushi for many years. Friendly staff that is good with kids and responsive

I went here a few years ago and I'm so glad that it's still open. Covid 19 has been very hard but I'm so happy that it's still here. They still have really great food at an amazing price. They sell so much things from appetizers like soft shell crab to literally sushi. It's so good. I ordered miso soup, seafood yakisoba, chicken katsu combo box, two orders of spicy tuna rolls, pork and vegetable gyoza, shrimp tempura, and banana tempura. The miso soup was very flavorful, it was surprisingly very subtle yet refreshing. It had such a good balance to it with the tangy salty miso flavor and the seaweed and tofu just helped it taste even fresher. My mom tried the yakisoba but I couldn't eat it, she said it was really good with all the different seafood, scallops, shrimp, crab meat, etc. The chicken katsu was so crisp yet flavorful, it wasn't dry and it just was so satisfying. In my combo box, they added shrimp and vegetable tempura, shumai, california rolls, rice, and two different sauces. Surprisingly, the katsu wasn't very heavy. It was so worth it for the price. The spicy tuna rolls were so good and it wasn't as spicy but it tastes really refreshing. The pork gyoza was so good and very flavorful, it had a subtle sweetness from the soy sauce and had a lot of wonderful juices. The vegetable gyoza was alright but it had a weird aftertaste. The shrimp tempura was so crispy and it wasn't overcooked. The Banana tempura was alright. Overall, I'm very satisfied with coming there and I can't wait to come back again, it was such a pleasant visit. Also, the servers were really nice, already giving us water and always asking if the food was okay, even making sure that we were fine. Such nice ambiance and such amazing food and amazing service. Will come back!! read more

I ordered the Salmon Combination Plate and it was super tasty. Not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating. My meal was really good! read more

This is the best restaurant to eat at on Roosevelt island, and affordable as well. Edamame appetizer is good ($4), as was my entrée tofu and veggie udon soup ($9). I was full from just eating 1/2 the broth and most of the vegetables; I didn't even need the noodles to fill me up because this is a monster serving of soup. Fried ice cream ($4) desert is a large portion and ok, not the best I have had by any means. I would gladly throw Fuji East 3 stars for food and 4 stars for price, except the service was curt to the point of rudeness. read more

There are not that many food options on Roosevelt Island, so I guess you just gotta settle here. However, be in the know for what to expect. Food: -Salmon sashimi: the fish quality seemed actually pretty okay -J J Salmon Roll: this is blergh. not recommended. felt like I just ate something bland and mushy. -Lobster Roll: flavors overpowered by the sauce. basically drenched in sauce. So if you like sushi drenched in sauce, this is for you; not for me. -Crazy Tuna Roll: better than the salmon roll. pretty okay, actually, but there wasn't anything crazy about it. it was average. Service: verrryyy verryyyy slow. not that many customers here, but it was hard to get hold of the server. The server was not so friendly and looked like she didn't want to be working there. Recommended? Sure, if you are on this island stranded. read more
