Well, I'm not feeling well this week but I have committed to being here at La Quinta Hotel in Springfield (the lowest rate is not refundable) hoping to go to 350 Grill for a good meal. However, although I'm feeling better, I am still not feeling up to leaving my room at all like I had originally planned a month ago. I am still a bit congested still coughing up some phlegm. Instead, I'm doing takeout (delivery) for Caribbean (Jamaican ) food. I've never tried this place before but have known about it for a few years. It's right down the street from 350 Grill in a little hole in the wall. This is a fast food place but the food is probably going to taste very homemade. The menu is very small right now, so I got a sampling of what they have and some new things I've never had before. The menu on the photos is actually their normal menu. I found it rather odd that I order off Uber Eats and then, within seconds, go onto Facebook and what's the FIRST thing I see? Yep. It's an Uber Eats ad. Spying, are we? That can't be coincidence. I was particularly happy that there was no additional fees on my order (just taxes). For $40, I'm going to get a lot of good eats. Don't you worry though. I have a half dozen (6 ) craft beers in the little fridge keeping them nice and chilled and a vial of deadly hot habanero powder. I even brought my own glass courtesy of Powder Hollow Brewery in nearby Enfield. See Groupon for a great deal if you're interested (25% off today in addition!). The glass(es) are included. You're not going to believe this! The app tells me, 5 minutes before delivery time (8 PM) that the order is cancelled! I call Queenie's and it goes directly to voicemail! I then decide to go back to my original plan - 350 Grill. I'll do pickup instead. The person who answers the phone, Mike, tells me they are not taking pickup orders! Argh! On to Plan C. I do Barkaya I stead. It's right across the street. Nope. Closed on weekends! Plan D. I go back to the Uber Eats app and notice this place is open and fairly close nearby. To my astonishment, after I complete my order of 5 items for around $40, there is a $25 off special! Sign me up! Notice the Chinese characters next to each item on the receipt. The fees are 33% of the original order! Going to start it out with a Tribute DIPA made from the 14th Star Brewing Company in Vermont. Very good ! Very hoppy. There is a also a huge number of Air Force service people here tonight so this is a fitting "Tribute" to the troops ! The meal comes with a few napkins, soy sauce, duck sauce and fried Chinese twists. My first curiosity is what exactly are "fried cocktail claws"? Ok. It's fried imitation crab. These are like 4" long. Still pretty yummy ! I don't eat a lot of fried food. Next up, I'm sampling their hot and soup soup. This has always been a favorite of mine. There's no fork anywhere but I brought one from home so I'm prepared! But, I didn't bring a spoon , but they included one. At least something's gone right tonight. I see a lot of floating mushrooms. So what's in it? Here's the North American version: Soup preparation may use chicken or pork broth, or may be meat-free. Common key ingredients in the American Chinese version include bamboo shoots, toasted sesame oil, wood ear, cloud ear fungus, day lily buds, vinegar, egg, corn starch, and white pepper. This is damn good ! It's still quite hot (temperature) too! Next up is the Pork Fried Rice. This is also a favorite of mine and my sister. CoFor this, I believe the only ingredients are fried rice, pork , onions and soy sauce. I love this stuff! Yummy ! For my next beer, I'm having a Beer'd Brewing Company TROUBLE. This is a Belgian style Tripel (yes, that's how they spell it) ale. It is slightly sweet, strong (8% ABV) and not hoppy. For my entree, I'm having the Three Amigo with Jalapeños made with scallop, shrimp and chicken chunks with broccoli , carrots , mushrooms and special sauce. To kick it up a notch, I'm adding Carolina Reaper powder made with...Yes. You guessed it. Carolina reapers and nothing else. These are brutal so be careful! This is pretty good ! Interesting. They had a few banana peppers in there (not jalapeños as advertised). For dessert, Chinese donuts . OMG . These are dangerously good !

Food was bad. Even bad is an Overstatement. The worst place I've ever gotten food from and I like to eat everything. Everything was bland and flavorless and dry. Did not look OR taste fresh, you're better off buying frozen boxes of chinese food from BigY. A waste of money, but luckily, everything was cheap.

Actual rotten food! Save your money and go to somewhere that's actually good. I don't think they clean the kitchen!

The fact that they aren't listed on the big ordering apps just adds to their charm and you know you're getting an authentic Chinese take-out experience. The restaurant is run by a lovely married couple who are both incredibly efficient and friendly. What really sets them apart is their personal touch. Even if I disappear for a while due to work, they still remember me by name whenever I return, which speaks volumes about how much they care for their customers. The food here is fantastic. My go-to dishes are the chicken wings and the egg foo young. They are always perfectly cooked with amazing flavors. The shrimp with broccoli is also done very well, with fresh, crisp veggies and plump shrimp, and their crab rangoons are some of the tastiest I've had in town, crispy on the outside with a creamy, flavorful filling. Every dish I've tried has been made with care, and you can taste the quality in every bite. One thing I really appreciate is the convenience. There's a large parking lot, which is a huge plus in this area, and the restaurant is located in a plaza with some shops, so you can walk around and browse while you wait for your food. If you're looking for a consistent, family-run Chinese restaurant with great food and welcoming service, Hong Kong Garden is it. I can't recommend it enough for some good old American Chinese take-out!

I have never been so disappointed--the only items that were still good were the wings and the egg rolls were in fact better than I remember. The Mongolian beef (which is my favorite Chinese dish) was awful-I ate one bite and could eat no more--it had an odd taste which was not pleasant. All fried rice (I had ordered a number of combo meals)-was hard as a rock (one could have gotten a broken tooth due to the hardness of the rice)-the rice had no flavor. The pork chow mein had hardly any pork. The shrimp with lobster sauce--the shrimp was not in one solid piece but soft without flavor. The teriyaki sticks were thin and hard in the middle. Nothing satisfied--I had spent $109 and most of the food went in the garbage can after one bite. WORD TO THE WISE; IF YOU CRAVE CHINESE FOOD, WATCH A YOUTUBE VIDEO AND MAKE YOUR OWN. Beef was delicious as was the sauce. Won Ton soup was excellent too. Great broth and won tons were tasty. However, the quality has been exceptionally good, especially in the last couple years since there appears to have been a change in management. The portions are generous, the meat and especially the vegetables aren't overcooked (a problem I've encountered at some other places), and the staff are friendly and professional. Is it greasy? Yes, though not nearly as much as some other places around here. Is it healthy? Probably not, unless you get one of the steamed vegetable dinners in the "healthy section". Personally I don't get Chinese food for my health; my personal favorite order is the dinner combo plate with chicken and broccoli and fried rice. Comes with an egg roll and tastes perfect every time. The timeless General Tso's chicken is also a treat. I've been here enough that a year or two ago they even gave me a free tote bag, which is among my most cherished thing-holders today. If you live in Holyoke, forget the middling rating and give this place a try. It's a great place to have in the neighborhood.
