perfectly cooked bacon- and several slices came with the meal
    Amanda C.

I've been on a diner kick lately- Looking for a good (decent) diner breakfast at a cheap price. I'm not looking for hipster/ fancy food- I want the real deal. I've been eating at every diner from Chapel Hill to Hickory- and Frye Daddy's is hand down the winner. The food tastes good and you can't beat the prices. This is the only diner that I've been to outside of New Orleans that actually serves you grits that are already seasoned, (butter, salt, and pepper- and the perfect consistency). We received more than three measly pieces of bacon with our order, and it was cooked perfectly. You can tell they've used their grill/griddle for sometime- because the flavors come out in your food. I mean this in the good, "homecooked meal" kind of way. You know the cast iron skillet with all that flavor in it- that's what their cook surface is like because everything that came to our table had a wonder flavor. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. There was one server, and she was pleasant and took care of all the tables in the place. When we arrived, there was only one other person in the diner, but the joint quickly filled up. (And we were there on a week day.) You can tell that this place is well loved by locals. It's not close to use by any means, but we will go back as it's our new favorite diner. I'll be comparing all other diners to this place from now on. It might not look like much- but if you want to honest to goodness diner experience- THIS is the place that you need to visit.

Food is fabulous. Service is great, a little loud when busy. Nice down home diner. Only 4 stars because I don't like giving 5.

As for the type of food, there is a lot of typical Southern food on the menu. The service was great! The cashier was extremely friendly and brought wonderful energy to the restaurant. I got the Breakfast Burrito with Grits. I was not impressed by the burrito, unfortunately. I felt like it needed more flavor, either in the meat or elsewhere. I also think more cheese, specifically inside the burrito rather than on the outside, would have made it taste better too. Moreover, the burrito was soggy! I was not a fan of that. The grits were also a bit too watery for me. I had to add salt and pepper, along with the butter given to me in my order, to give it some depth. While I think that this is a lovely local restaurant, the food could be better. I would give it a 2.5/5 stars if I could.

Super quaint café serving both lunch and breakfast. I settled on the country fried steak, grits, biscuits and 2 med fried eggs. One kiddo had the same as mine, but hash browns instead of grits (after seeing hers the hash browns were the better choice). Another kiddo had 2 huge buttermilk pancakes. Hubby had the hart and soul omelet with grits. Loved the diner feel, but the AC just could not keep up with the heat. Parking is super limited so we parked on 4th and Main by the tracks. Price was suuuuuper reasonable! Service was great and friendly!

So we decided that we were going to give it a try. After looking at a menu and being approached by the host who gave us a brief introduction to the menu we were in for sure. We asked to sit indoors with it being a windy and somewhat humid day. They have plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas. We were informed later by our excellent server, Ashlee that there is also seating upstairs! We forgot to take a tour! The decor is very chic, but not overly done. We were seated at a table, but booths are available as well. Even the women's restroom with chic. It needed to be picked up a bit but was nice. Our server Ashlee was excellent! Her upbeat personality and friendliness was in the 10 rating! For only being at the restaurant a couple of weeks I think her vibes will keep bringing customers back. But not only her vibes, the food is very good too! My friends were very happy with their main meal, me as well! I had the Chicken Panini and the companion (side dish) I selected was the Pan Fried Corn. Both very good! We did order shareables too! The Southwest egg rolls and the Charcuterie Board. We were very happy with both! I would definitely order them again. I ordered two alcoholic drinks. My first drink was called the Bees Knees (ginger, honey, lemon bourbon) and an Espresso Martini. Both were good. The ginger was very mild in the Bees Knees. We were quite full so we were not able to enjoy our desserts at the restaurant but did order them to go. We ordered the Crème Brûlée and Key Lime Cheesecakes to go. I enjoyed the Key Lime, a good balance of sweet and tart. A little perfumme for me but still good. The feedback on the Crème Brûlée, was ok. I didn't try it. When I visit this area again, I would surely come back here and try some other items on the menu. Parking in this area can be quite busy, especially on the weekends. We came during the weekday in July after 1pm. We had to circle a few times before we got a parking spot. Come early!

Who possibly wants to eat deep fried breaded grits? We ordered some apps and I forget what my wife and SIL order, but the overall opinion was just OK. No one wanted to return. Plus... the inside restaurant smelled like something died in there. We ate outside, as eating inside was impossible due to the smell. When I went to use the bathroom about an hour later, they had heavily perfumed the restuarant.

Between the two of us, we've been here at least four or five times over the years, and I've also had several business lunches here. I genuinely wish I could say it's a restaurant I love and frequently recommend, because there is a lot to like about it. The building has character, the location is great, and the overall atmosphere is charming. Unfortunately, the experience itself has consistently left us underwhelmed. Every time we visit, the food is just okay--nothing particularly memorable or worth going out of your way for. The service has also been consistently slow, and on this most recent visit, that trend continued. We keep telling ourselves we won't come back, but after six to eight months we'll think, "Maybe we should give it another shot." Sadly, we usually leave feeling the same way we did the time before. What makes this especially frustrating is that the restaurant has so much potential. The setting is wonderful, and we genuinely want to like it. However, after multiple visits over several years, it feels like the food quality and service simply haven't lived up to the atmosphere. My biggest suggestion would be to focus on improving the consistency and quality of the food and to encourage the service staff to be more attentive, friendly, and proactive. A little hustle and hospitality can go a long way. At this point, there are simply too many other good dining options in the area for me to enthusiastically recommend Hickory Station. To those about to dine, I'd honestly look elsewhere.

I was raised in Hickory all my life, but never really ventured out to enjoy the local food scene. I am trying to do that a little bit more whenever I come back. I got the Turkey, Bacon, & Avocado sandwich without mixed greens. It was a really messy but a pretty good and filling meal. There was a bit too much avocado, but I liked the aioli as it added some flavor to the sandwich. Each sandwich also comes with a bag of chips! Overall, I would be interested in coming back and trying their other sandwiches... only if I had an out of town friend visiting. I think that the sandwiches are overpriced ($14 for a simple deli meat sandwich?). It also pains me to see their version of banh mi being priced that high as some of the best banh mi from Vietnamese-owned shops cost half that price. P.S. I see that Yelp has this spot listed as closed, but as of February 2026, it is definitely open!
