I seem to always wait til the last minute to get the registration sticker. I arrived at 8A and the line was quite short but it went fast. I drove around for a minute due to the last time I was there, they were at a different spot in the shopping center. I was told that they moved 2 years ago, so that shows that I haven't been there for some time. They do change a $3 fee for using your card, so that is something to keep in mind. It didn't bother me, since I actually don't carry cash. I recently attempted to do a title transfer here after purchasing a car. Arrived around 7:45am to be first in line so I could get in and out before my work shift. Upon entering, the staff were very polite & friendly but the woman (whose name I didn't catch) looked at my paperwork and informed me that they could not process my transfer because the place I had the car inspected wasn't an approved vendor or something along those lines. She told me I would have to either make an appointment with the Travis co tax office, where they would verify in a different way, or go to a different inspection station. I asked her if there was a website to check or verify which inspection places were acceptable . She did not know but she told me to go to a shop about a mile up Lamar for the inspection (she even named them!) & come back so they could process the transfer. Well, I didn't do that. There is a website. The inspection place I went to is listed on that website. I decided to visit a different tag & title place. There was no wait at all this afternoon and they processed my title transfer/reg/etc with no issues. Seems sus, as the kids say. read more

was denied a permanent disability placard because i was told it was too early to get it and to come back months later after my temperary placard expired. When i came back months later they said my prescription was expired. I tried another title company and they gave my disability placard right away. I was given mis information twice and waisted time and did have access to my disability parking accommodations. I will be putting in a complaint to BBB and never returning to this location. Ruth Ann and I have lived in Austin for 35 years and we did not know this authorized service provider on anything vehicle, title, boat, and registration stickers option was available. My Texas sticker expires in December each year for my Vistage auto. This year I had the mailed reminder with me in late November and for some reason got distracted and then forgot to do anything and eventually lost it. Long story short, the woman at Fry's told me there was a problem with my documents when there wasn't! Long story: I recently bought a new Tesla and you have to get the registration and pay the sales tax yourself to get your plates. The tax office up on 183 was booked over a month out, so I gave Fry's a try. They said yes they could do this, but the woman who handled me after I waited in a short line looked at the documents Tesla gave me and told me Tesla made a mistake. She said they put in a rebate amount along with a trade-in value for my old car and that the form couldn't have both fields filled out so I would have to call Tesla and get them to send me a new version of the document with the rebate line left blank. I said I would really like to get this done today if possible since there's a 30 day deadline from the day you get your vehicle or there's a late fee. She looked at me like I was dumb for having to have this repeated and she repeated the above claim about Tesla's mistake and CROSSED OUT the $570 written on the rebate line with a PEN. So, convinced Tesla made a mistake, because, she does this for a living right? How could she be wrong? I told Tesla the problem and to send me a new document. Tesla came back saying there was no mistake and that they wouldn't send a new copy of the registration application document! Well, shit. So finally I explained to Tesla how this woman crossed out the field with a pen and then they agreed to send me a new copy, however, it would be exactly the same as the original one they mailed out because there was no mistake. I said fine, I'll take it directly to the tax office this time and just walk-in and wait line instead of going to Fry's. So I did that, and the the tax office had no problem with Tesla's documentation. Everything was fine and I got my car registered and got my plates after waiting in line about 30 mintes. It's the tail-end of 2021 and we've been in the pandemic / "great resignation" combo for almost 2 years. Quite a few things are still not as they were in "the before times," and trying to license and title a vehicle in Travis County is a fantastic case study to illustrate the frustrating situation. At least there's Fry's Auto Title Service to provide some small measure of relief, even if their own "service" could stand some polishing. TL;DR Come here if you can't get an appt with the county office. Have you tried to buy or sell a car as a non-dealer in Texas lately? It's a bureaucratic nightmare that requires multiple in-person visits to government offices that can only occur by unknowable duration appointment during weekday working hours and guess what, all appointments are booked for the next two months. One reason multiple appointments are required is that the "rules" for the paperwork are so poorly communicated that many customers will have their forms rejected and must return another day to repeat the time-sucking cycle. Oh, and if you don't get your taxes paid and license applied within 30 days of purchase, you must pay a penalty of $250 or more. It boggles the mind that these transactions could not occur by mail or even electronically through Docusign like almost all other legal/financial business. Hmm.... Also, forget about reaching someone who knows anything by phone unless you can make time during your work day to wait on hold for 45+ minutes, if they ever actually answer the phone. Ugh, indeed. Only after I did reach a human by phone at the Travis County Tax Office and asked what to do if unable to get an appointment before the 30 day limit that I was informed of the 2 private title companies in town (Fry's being 1) who could also perform this process. Turns out they take walk-ins only, and only during the limited hours of 8a-3p, Mon-Thu. Hey, Travis Co: please post this essential information on your website like Bexar does. It's ludicrous that taxpayers are wasting time stressing out over getting an unobtainable appointment with you when there are alternatives. Arriving at Fry's (same complex as Half Priced Books on S. Lamar), you'll see the long line of people waiting on the sidewalk. Bring something to do, as you're likely to be standing here for 90+ minutes. Only 4 customers are allowed entry at a time for pandemic risk reduction. At about 2p, they will send someone outside to stop any new people from joining the line. Do not try to call Fry's. They don't answer the phone, as they are too understaffed to respond to calls and barely have enough staff to help the customers already on site. If you have questions about auto titling & licensing, you need to review the FAQs on the websites for Texas DMV, Travis County Tax Office, and Fry's, then hope for the best. They do have an email form on their website, but you may not get a timely response, as they just don't have enough employees. In my 2 visits to Fry's, I saw about 30% of the customers (including myself) wait in line for an hour or more to get to the desk, only to be turned away due to some minor deficiency in paperwork that could not be fixed without another party who was absent. All of this could be prevented with clear instructions on the website FAQs and/or clear signage in both English and Spanish about common issues with the paperwork. Further, having at least one person at the desk who speaks Spanish would be wonderful, especially given that this private company is providing a government function that should be accessible to all community members. Most helpful would be having someone out there talking to people in line, pre-checking their paperwork and finding any issues sooner so that the time of both parties is not wasted and the line moves quicker for all. Even though the entire process was frustrating and dehumanizing, and the lady at Fry's who handled my paperwork was the epitome of surly, I did ultimately get my tax, title, and license resolved on the last hour of the day my temp tags expired. That's more than I got from the useless Travis Co Tax Office. For this, I am eternally grateful, and I would definitely recommend going here over the government office if you have an auto title transfer. Protip: To be certain that all will be resolved in a single visit, your best bet is to have all registrants for the vehicle present (for example, both spouses). This way, if any additional papers need signatures, you don't have to come back another day. Otherwise, bring a comprehensive durable power of attorney giving you all rights to do business on behalf of your spouse. Also, if any signature uses a different spelling than the legal name as shown on the ID (such as "Bob" for "Robert", or using a middle initial instead of spelling out a full middle name), you will be required to complete an "affidavit of same name" that both names represent the same person. Avoid! I had a simple question about their services. I input my question on their website form several days ago.....no response. I tried to call the number posted here and on their website (5 times).....the call disconnected every time. They used to be the efficient alternative to going to the Travis County Tax office when run by Nelda Wells Spears. Now Travis County has upped their game and has several satellite tax offices. If you buy a new Tesla, do not bother going here. They will not accept your paperwork, because of what they claim is a missing signature on the odometer paper. Travis county accepted the paperwork, saying with the title from Tesla, no signature was required on the odometer paper. Only wasted 1.5 hours in the cold, in line, to be incorrectly denied. read more

The worst experience ever. I've been using Fry Auto Title for over 10 years now and they have always been great, until now. This time was much different. I went here to verify the information and docs I needed to transfer a title from my father who had just passed. I flew to CA had the documents notarized with my brother, came back to Fry Auto Title, and they told me they were done incorrectly. I had docs re-notarized several times and made many trips back and forth as Fry Auto Title would not except the CA notary. After many trips and a lot of money I decided to go directly to DPS and had no issues. Matter of fact the original documents would have been just fine. Don't let this place frustrate you, they are only good at very simple tasks that have to do with the state of Texas. I will never use or refer Fry Auto Title again. I am new to TX and was registering my vehicle after inspection. Service was fast, especially given that there were at least 7-8 people in ahead of me when I arrived. But the tiny DIY sign that lists procedural instructions about no "numbers being taken" could be more prominent. But what's really alarming, is that after my transaction here, I have been receiving letter after letter from fraudulent companies who have ALL of my vehicle's information and of course, my address too. The letters all claim my warranty is expiring and I need to contact them so I don't lose insurance coverage. I looked up some of the phone numbers and it's pretty scary to read experiences of the shady tactics deployed by those bad actors to get money out of a person. Did I miss some fine print? Drove from North Austin to get a Disabled Parking Placard. Had appropriate Dr's document and Texas form VTR-214. The employee stated that because the 2 documents were dated in different months, (April and May) she could not issue a Placard, citing "time sensitive". I left and went straight to the County Tax Office and got it with absolutely no problem. This translates to missed revenue from a customer trying to use a private local business and a lot of wasted time for the customer. Service is not fast but it's thorough, even though they COULD do better (seems kinda ridiculous to be open 18 hours/week and to still do like 2 hours of breaks daily between three employees with like fifty people in line, but ok). I had to do something simple. Just needed to register my car to TX as I moved from another state a few months ago. I was in and out fairly quick. Waited in line/got my car registered all within an hour. I got there right at 9AM. If anything is probably go around 10:30am - 11. The line seemed to die down by the time I left. I was going to give 4 stars because the customer service to other patrons could of been a bit better. This was an awful experience. I called before coming to make sure I had everything I needed and nobody picked up. Waited in line for 3 hours, and was told I didn't have everything I need, and the lady who helped me called me a liar. While I was waiting in line the owner (the man who sits outside and let's people in) told me that they are the only place in town after a bunch of other places got shut down, so it makes sense that the customer service was garbage. If you need something very straightforward done, Fry is probably not a bad option compared to the DMV. My recent experience shows they have a pretty serious lack of knowledge about TX registration laws. I went by with all of my paperwork to register a car bought from an out of state seller, and was told that my odometer disclosure statement needed to be notarized. I contacted the out of state seller, and they were adamant that Texas does not require seller odometer disclosures to be notarized. I went back a second time and was told the same thing once again. This time I pressed it and they got the boss out of the back who came out to confirm that absolutely the odometer disclosure needed to be notarized. She was very certain about it. Seller wouldn't do it, and nothing I can find on the DMV or tax office websites says it's required. I finally went to the actual Travis County Tax office and they said "yeah that's fine, it doesn't need to be notarized" and did the registration. By that time I was past my 30 days, so I got hit with a nice $50 late fee. So if you have a standard in-state registration renewal or something, it's probably better than the DMV, but they really don't know what they're doing so I'd think twice about wasting your time with anything else. read more
