the outside of a grocery store
    Peter C.

This grocery store actually shuttered back in 2019 pre-pandemic. There were many bottlenecks on the new owners reopening this store, they actually remodeled the storefront to look more modern and unfortunately had to tear it down after some busybody in the neighborhood decided to complain to the city. Fast forward 3 years they reverted back to the original storefront and reopened for business. One thing I missed is the fruit and vegetable puns on the back wall. The store was very well remodeled and clean. The shelves are all well stocked and their inventory is fresh. On my visit, I came to buy pasta to make dinner and they have a huge selection available. The pricing is very competitive for convenience at a walking distance from home. The produce here is also very fresh and they have items at reduced price to move their inventory faster. There is also a flower shop on the side that is also run by Fruit Barn. The staff here are very friendly and are open to feedback on making the store better. Overall a win for the neighborhood, as this increases competition for the grocery market on Ocean Ave.

Fruit Barn is in the Ingleside neighborhood. It is a great spot to pick up stables especially affordable produce & even some organic produce. Small Bulk bin w/ staples. Organic pasta, hummus, & salsa. No non-dairy yogurt. No tempeh. Yet bulk tofu that sells for 4 blocks for $1.00 which was very affordable. They had no refrigerated soy milk yet they had the smaller size non-refrigerated non-dairy milks including soy milk, almond milk, & rice milk. For speciality items in the neighborhood there is a Whole Foods a short walk from here yet this is a good place to pick up produce & some staples.

www.94112.net You are in luck, because you don't have to drive very far to buy organic food. Most of the major chains, such as Safeway located at 4950 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94112 have many organic lines. If you don't like the fuss of the major grocery chain, you can also check out Fruit Barn located at 1616 Ocean Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112. Fruit Barn always has fresh organic fruit products and gives the larger chain a run for their money. You can even find healthy organic cereal, milk, and just about anything and maybe more than you would at the larger chain. Fruit Barn 1616 Ocean Ave San Francisco, CA 94112

I typically avoid shopping on Ocean Ave since parking can be challenging. With the gentrification of the neighborhood and the influx of Chinese businesses to cater those who live in the area, the foot traffic and business atmosphere has starkly improved in recent years. Used to be, my only reasons for coming to Ocean were McD's, CVS (now closed), and, back in the day, Church's Fried Chicken (long gone and missed). I found parking about a half a block away a little after 9 am and walked by several businesses that were mostly closed or about to open, restaurants and a hardware store respectively. As I walked in, I noticed the butcher counter to the left and some self-serve refrigerators across with bottled goods on shelves just above them. There is only one aisle to the right and the cashier counter is to the immediate right by the window. In shopping here, do be mindful of your surroundings as they are often restocking the meat counters and fish tanks as well as hauling ice. I found my two shopping items within three minutes and was out of here in about five minutes. A gentleman was buying a couple of live fish, likely for a restaurant as he requested a written receipt for tax reporting purposes. I came here once a few years ago on a holiday to buy something that I needed to cook lunch so it wasn't my first visit. The left gated area (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=x5Zw2VaalFAYeHDrKaAnhg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) seems to be their warehouse/storage area. Thank you for saving me a drive to Chinatown or Daly City. In a pinch...

The stock is nothing concretely substantive with produce or meats as would be standard in most Latin-American-Mexican groceries but it does have the typical stocks that would interest Asian customers, English speaking customers writ large of the Ingleside area as far as dry foodstuffs and sundry: Energy drinks, chips, some fruits and vegetable produce, frozen foods such as frozen yuca (root vegetable similar to the potato that you can fry and boil), along with some condiments and seasonings that can be used in Asian cuisine and dishes in spite their target Latin American/Mexican intended dishes. And although some would consider the store redundant in offerings, I would caution that sometimes, whenever someone can't find something in one store in the neighborhood, you can always go to another grocer that may have what you're precisely looking for as far as basic foodstuffs and sundry. That said, the service, usually of one person or two available to expedite your transactions, is more than enough to get you from where you want to be. If you are more of a casual shopper that wants an "in-and-out" experience, this place is a good place to stop by on foot or locals that are on their way to catch the San Francisco MUNI K-Ingleside or T-Third Street light rail transit trains hither or fither. A real life saver and breath of fresh air and variety from the typical of the Ingleside grocer offerings!

The Price: Easily some of the best values in the city. The Con: Sealed Packaging: Everything is pre-sealed in 1lb plastic bags. Because of the sealing, you can't smell the tea before buying. I'd love to see them implement scent jars in the future to help with the selection process. Neutral Observations In-House Packaging: All the tea is packaged identically in 1lb bags, which suggests they likely process and bag everything in-house. Labeling: I didn't notice any specific organic labels on the packaging, though I didn't explicitly ask. If this is a deal breaker, you may want to ask. Review If you're looking for a genuine loose leaf tea source -- your search ends here. I stumbled upon this place after endless online searching (blogs, search engines, etc) and it was well worth the effort! Just a heads-up on navigation: G-Maps is slightly off. If you rely solely on that, you'll be a few doors down. Look for the Volvo mechanics and the shop is located just on the other side. The exterior is unassuming, no windows, just a sandwich board on the sidewalk and a door. Looking inside it's a bit of a mysterious vibe, you'll see a stairway to the left and a hallway ahead. Go for it. Ignore the single pane glass, bank-teller-style window to your right (which directs you to the main door) and just head in. Also, keep an eye on the clock because, per the phone tree, they close for lunch from 12:30 to 1:00. I arrived right after 1pm and was able to park right in front. There was also plenty of other parking spot around at that time. IDK why, but before walking in, my imagination had prepared me for an old-world San Francisco opium den. I was thinking there was going to be this lingering aromatic smoke, plush floor pillows, people lounging, sipping tea, and the soft, ambient melodies of an upscale spa. I had also pictured rows of heavy, whiskey-style wooden barrels overflowing with loose leaf tea, topped with clear lids and metal scoops. The reality is much more utilitarian. This is not a den or a spa. It's clean, straightforward, and focused entirely on their product. The selection is robust and incredibly diverse. While they claim "wholesale to the public", I can't verify the industry margins, but I can tell you the prices are very good for the quality you receive. The employee greeted me and then stayed hands-off while I browsed, which I appreciated. When I did ask specifics, they had basic foundational knowledge. Honestly with the diversity and sheer quantity of products offered, it would take forever to earn a Tea Master badge. No harm no foul. The only real bummer here is that everything is pre-sealed in 1lb plastic bags, so there is no way to smell the product. I'd really appreciate scent jars in front of the bags. Since they seem to be doing the packaging in-house anyway, it makes me wonder why they haven't set aside a small amount of each batch for scent jars. It wouldn't require a change in their supply chain, just a few ounces and a glass jar to help customers navigate that massive variety. That aside, I absolutely loved this place. I've been searching for a spot like this for a long time. I'm just glad I finally found it. If you're at all interested in loose leaf tea, I'd suggest giving these folks an honest try.
