I didn't know places like this existed outside of the Mission District. So it was quite a surprise to step into El Chico Produce. If you've ever been to a Latin Produce market/stand you won't find anything that surprises you here. Great value and selection , yes it's not gonna be a pristine as your Whole Foods/Safeway but that's not why you come here. Great to see a venue like this... Like your mom/grandma/abuelita always told you "veggies and fruits are good for you mijo".

Pork tamle

Picked up 2 pork tamales... really good! It's a little spicy. They ran out of chicken, so I'll definitely come back. 2 tamales for $5.

Decided to stop here after eating at Hard Knox Cafe... the produce look so fresh so picked up some manila mangos and bell peppers. Wonderful variety of produce like guavas, papayas, plantains, greens along with Mexican groceries and a few asian and mediterranean items. Relatively clean, organized and reasonably priced for mom and pop

A colorful array of fruits!

If you know me, then you'd know that everytime I see fruits and veggies, I get really happy because I'm your fruit-and-veggie type of gal. So when I moved to the neighborhood 1.5 years ago, I was stoked when I realized I live literally 30 steps from this place. I spend a good chunk of my money here, and I have no problem with that because most of the time I don't even have to spend all that much, yet I still get plenty of fruits and veggies. I love the convenience of it...they're open early and close late. I love that they carry a variety of produce and even other grocery items. I don't know what I would do without this place!!

The produce selection is gorgeous and fresh at Safeway prices, but with flavor.

A good store all around with great prices. The fact that there is a meat market inside as well makes for quick one stop shopping.

If you want persimmons right now, this is the place to go! Giant cardboard containers of them, very reasonably priced.

The man who runs this market is always on the phone. Today he saw me come in and he stayed outside…read more- ON THE PHONE- when he came by the cash register, he was STILL ON THE PHONE- Very bad place to shop, none of their goods are priced.

I was walking around Balboa St after 6pm, and saw some nice oranges at this produce market…read more Actually there was a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, but I was only interested in the oranges (my favorite fruit). Balboa Market is a nice neighborhood market that has a little bit of everything. The prices are, of course, higher than in a big supermarket. But I have found better customer service and just plain better treatment in smaller markets, than in chain supermarkets. Why? They want repeat business and positive opinions about the place (like Yelp reviews). When you shop in a neighborhood market, you just buy what you need. While I was paying for my oranges and chocolate chip cookies, the clerk tried to sell me ice cream. I told him it's around 57*F and drizzling outside. He said eating ice cream might make you feel warmer. Then we had an amusing discussion about San Francisco weather. Maybe 57*F is balmy for the "Avenues" because people were outside eating dinner in parklets. Anyway, Balboa Produce Market is a nice neighborhood store, and is probably a popular choice among locals. That's why it was still open pass 6pm.

Plenty of hamachi chunks with seaweed salad, avocado, and edamame beans. I think this is about $12 or $13 if I remember correctly. so good and wallet friendly Sashimi (5/5) I loveeee hamachi (yellow tail) and I always get their sashimi and nigiri here. They have both regular hamachi and also the hamachi toro! The toro is about $18 for 6 or 7 pieces. So much cheaper than what you can get at restaurants. I wanted to do a make your own hand roll night at home and got a variety of sashimi, a small container of ginger and wasabi for $1 each, and a small container of tobiko for $2! Everything came out to about $80 and enough to feed 3 people. They have plenty of rice bowls, sushi rolls, and you can even order catering from them. And since they are a mini market, you can get a variety of Japanese snacks, drinks and ramen! Service is fast and the lady at the cashier is very nice and efficient.

Gets busy, but quick line. The store is super clean. The toro sashimi was delicious. Good fatty pieces, but it was a bit pricey per pound, so you do not get a lot of pieces. The salmon tobiko don ($15) was a good meal, I love how it includes seaweed salad. The onigiri, about $4.50 each, has a balanced ratio of rice and filling.
