The Safeway on Monterey ( not the city but the boulevard ) is one of the legacy Safeways in San Francisco. This is the place where San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee use to shop at until he unfortunately collapsed inside this Safeway and later passed away. Over the years there have been some improvements inside. This is a good place to shop for groceries in San Francisco. One of the originals San Francisco Safeway This is located in the city of San Francisco on the boulevard called Monterey read more

This is really disappointing. Usually staff here are really nice and helpful but tonight my mom and I did NOT experience that! Mind you, there are other locations closer to my house, but I like coming here more. I drove my mom to come purchase the .88 cents pasta. Deborah, elderly white lady rang us up. I enter my mom's number, however, it didn't accept her number because the pasta came out to $20. I showed Deborah that I clipped the coupon on the app and all she said was- well.. it says it's $20. She then scan the coupon barcode on the paper ad but it still didn't change the price. I asked if I can re-enter my mom's number and she huffed and puffed and made it a big deal then it needs to be. She complained that if I want to re-enter the number then she have to return every thing and start all over again with an eye roll and head tilt. Which is weird because we don't even finish the transaction so why do I have to return every thing. I'm sure there is a void option. Even if she have to void the whole transaction, then do so. I work retail as well, and we have the option to let our customers to re-enter their number and a void item option if customers decided they don't want an item. Now she's just standing there telling me- well what do you want to do? It says here it's limited to 12. I recounted my pasta and confirm it's 12. And she's still telling me it has to be 12. I said yes it's 12, but can I re-enter the number. Again, she goes- so I have to start everything all over again. I told my mom to place all the pasta back on the counter. I quickly wobbly myself back to the pasta section to make sure I got the correct pasta that's on sale. (I'm healing from leg surgery and I'm only one week out of the hospital) She finally let me re-enter the number and it accepted my mom's number. Then she complained that I enter it wrong. So if I entered it wrong, and I ASKED TO RE-ENTER THE NUMBER, why would you NOT let me! Yes it's late (7pm) and every one wants to go home. She's old and tired I'm sure but I think she needs to find another job if letting a customer re-enter their number is such a hassle. Customer service may not be for you. read more

If you see an elderly female cashier named DEBORAH, run the other way and never come back. She is very strange and rude. I did not have any coupons or asked her to rescan any items. She stared directly at me and said 'creepy' which is so ironic because that described her perfectly. The last time I was unlucky enough to encounter her, she was muttering under her breath complaining about me to the bagger, right in front of me., I asked her directly if she was talking about me and she started muttering that she was talking about something else (yet staring right at me when she was saying those things). What a weirdo! Waaaay past time to retire. read more

rude older lady rang us up, I didn't catch her name tag unfortunately. She huffed and puffed over everything, and speaking as a woman of color it seemed to be because of that. She seemed fine with all the other white customers but when it came down to us she was angry. Mind you we waited in line and mind our own business. She generally either needs to pick up her attitude or find a new job. Seeing the other post made two days ago I think her name is Deborah as their situation was similar. read more

The security guard here. Working at 1/22/24 at 5:30pm almost assaulted me because I had an issue with a price. If was ice cream, ice cream melts. I told her the price was 3x less than she rang me up for. As I left the security guard followed me out the store, and told me I wasn't allowed back anymore. I essentially told him this was my neighborhood Safeway and I'll come whenever I want. He took his baton and got in a defensive position like he was ready to hit me with it. This guy should not be working security with that attitude and if you try and call a manager, you get nothing. I tried calling SFPD, they didn't answer either..... read more

Safeway - Want to buy some milk? Good luck! - Grocery Near Me - San Francisco, California

Honestly this is a supermarket of the 1990's that was never updated. It is pretty small and still has those decorations of your childhood. It got its claim to fame when former mayor Ed Lee died waiting in line but in reality the lines are minimal. Although it is pretty sad that they haven't put up a plaque in honor of Ed Lee dying. Abraham Lincoln died at some theater and now it is a tourist attraction but this Safeway is just a place that sell Rainier beer. read more

They overcharged me by $42. This was on so called white tag special ms for members. I couldn't get help Customer Service was closed No counter employee or staffer would help They don't answer phones I returned after a week. I don't live near there They denied the prices were ever discounted though I had them in my phone and even took some tags to prove it I asked for last weeks ad. They had conveniently thrown it out. They took my phone number and receipt and promised to research Extremely customer hostile I came back a third time and they offered me $3. Not a typo Albertsons/Safeway are thieves stealing your money, your time and your dignity. You can find worse treatment in Russia but in this country, they're scammers and crooks. read more

This is a good neighborhood Safeway, not as big in size as most others. If you're looking for inventory and selection you'd consider going to the one over in Diamond Heights, but if you're looking to pick up staple goods and avoid long lines at times, this is a good one that'll get you the basics of what you need. There are 2 parking lots, one on the top deck and then the one providing front door access, as well as lots of parallel street parking. This services the community of residents well and has been here for I think at least 40 years or so. For those who live in the area, it's easy to walk to and grab things without having to drive. The service here is fine, and selection gives you enough options. It does feel a bit small and claustrophobic at times with more narrow isles and a lot of stuff crammed into a small space, but does the job. read more

Not all Safeways are the same. The difference between a well managed store vs a terrible one is apparent when you visit this one. Unfortunately, this is my neighborhood store and happens to be badly run. Expect to be stuck in a long checkout line with one cashier and hear frustrated sighs as you and your fellow sufferers ask them to open another lane. It will happen, eventually. But likely not before you have been reminded yet again that you have the misfortune of being stuck with an *incompetently managed* Safeway location in your hood. Shameful! read more

Lucky's or Safeway? Those were the grocery choices in my formative years. My family fit the profile of typical Asian (Ken K.'s A$N gene or Cherylynn's Chinesey aspect). We used to shop as a family at a one-stop shop named GET, a familiar name to longtime Sunset dwellers, on Sloat Blvd. After buying basic need items (school supplies, hardware needs, housewares. etc), we'd walk across the parking lot to the neighboring Lucky store for food needs. After they flattened GET and Lucky and later built the current Sloat Plaza, we had to find a replacement grocer and this was the nearest one. It is about 1/6th the size of the popular Marina Safeway so you may not necessarily find everything you want here. Parking is sufficient with two levels available. It is busier here since the Ocean Ave. closed; probably a wise choice given the new Whole Foods Market. While in the area, if you get hunger pangs, there are several dining choices here now. Rice Valley Shanghai is next door, Blue Iguana truck (Mexican) and Lucky River (Cantonese) across the street, and K's Kitchen down the block. read more

This Safeway needs a lot of help! This is the first Safeway I've ever been to that is so poorly managed! A bunch of the meats looked spoiled and seems like it's not properly refrigerated, some vegetables had mold, the eggs had water droplets meaning it also was not being properly refrigerated, the hot whole chicken did not have an exact packaged date, only month and year! The card machine on the very end register near the vegetables and the one next to that have constant problems (happened me and my Gf plus the person in front of us and behind us). I hope corporate sees this and does an investigation on this location. Management here needs to step up and do their job read more

Well this review is long overdue. Back in March of this year, I bought three grapefruits, advertised as $0.50 each, which should total to $1.50. But cashier charged me $10 instead, and the receipt said I had purchased starfruit instead of grapefruit. In what world does a spherical grapefruit look like a jagged starfruit?! And I don't think Safeway even sells starfruit! Yes, I blame myself for not checking my receipt prior to leaving the store. But how can a cashier make such a silly mistake? My advice: DOUBLE CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS! read more

Ugh Safeway- I just can't anymore. This location is small and safer than the one closest to my house but is so gross. The produce selection is minuscule so I usually just pick up staples- a quick stop during the week BUT that stop isn't quick, when you need to double back and return expired items. This has happened here more than once. So disgusting. ONE STAR and that goes to the manger for addressing this quickly and not wasting more of my time. read more

Safeway - Moldy old bacon - Grocery Near Me - San Francisco, California

Worst run Safeway in San Francisco and last time I will shop there based on today. I went there this morning to get a few things. I had my dogs with me so I need to park by the door entrance. There were three spots open but they were all taken by a small white track that parked across all the spots so no one else could park there. The truck was NOT doing a delivery, just some jackoff. I went in to tell the cashiers about it and they could care less. That's the attitude of that store from my 10 years experience. The staff and mangers have a hostile attitude toward customers. If you have a few items they NEVER open the express lane. It's like the staff enjoys having you wait behind people with 40 items.Despite complaints it never changes. The store manager is never around. Solutioion: I went to Tower Supermarket off Portola. AVOID THIS SAFEWAY LIKE THE PLAGUE. read more

Y'all need a remodel, for real. I mean, for real, for real, for real. Every time i get in the elevator I say a prayer to Big Baby Jesus to make it through to the other side. Also, some of your baggers are so slow and rude it makes me want to scream. Lady with the fancy long acrylic nails, I'm looking at you. You always have to interrupt the gaggle of women behind the deli counter to get something from them. I know you love to gossip ladies, but when I just stand there and stand there? The place could stand a serious remodeling, and more often than not you'll find yourself in a 6 person line with 1 register open. This is what a good Safeway store is all about. Good management with great diversity. Just because you are a particular race, it does not mean you should hire your own race. It does not matter what color you are. The only thing that's matter is Good and Bad. If you have good customer service, then the store will be good, if you have bad customer serve, the store will bad. So far the store has been very good, because there are nice people working there. This is what I like about this Safeway. There are diversity employees out here. Every businesses should learn from this example, and this is what we all need, diversifications, not racism. read more

this is purely a "local" grocery store. it lacks a bakery or a real butcher section so I never go here for major supplies shopping, just whenever I need something quick. Parking can also be a pain since on one realizes there's rooftop parking, instead everyone backs-up in a huge line in the lot in front of the entrance. the staff is nice, just wished they would avoid policy by trying to call me by my last name based on the tel# I use, especially since it's not my name they're saying. on the hand, this place is great for when I have guest over, everything is just down the street for me (and them) when needed in a pinch. read more

To echo the sentiments of some of the other reviewers..this Safeway BLOWS and only blips on my radar at all because it's very near to my home! It's dinky, the parking lot is a J O K E....the deli people seem to have just been released from a correctional facility and you get the distinct feeling that if you ask for them to slice up some mortadella they might shank you in the jugular and leave you for dead, hunched over in that bin o' bread sticks or whatever those things are up near the rotisserie chicken display! Low/limited quantities: I imagine because of the size of this store...they don't stock much inventory...the quantity/selection of produce is low....I do like their wine aisle though (big shock) which has an amazing selection in relation to how small the entire store is!Let this be a lesson to all grocery store designers of the world...ALWAYS create a ROOMY space for the hooch, ummmmkay?? The security guard...oy! Roosts up near the deli with his arms folded, thinking he looks bad ass but wreaking of Ben-Gay! Listen Papi, my grandmother could beat the crap out of you...try and tone down the machismo! How about you make some rounds about the store and pretend to be policing the joint? Gangs of unsavories could be walking around but you give the lady with a seeing eye dog the stink eye like SHE poses the clear and present danger to Safeway's assets!! The checkout clerks seem to have all just graduated from checkout clerk college...AND what is UP with that Richie Cunningham-esque (so retro, in an UN-sexy way) store MANAGER, who asks you 5,000 times if you found everything and then keeps staring into your cart as if you're planning to shoplift the 10 lb container of laundry deterge?? Worst still, the courtesy clerk (rather robust, confused looking woman, who seems to have been the victim of a mind meld OR perhaps bad mushrooms? Kinda does that "Night of the Living Dead" lumbering shuffle in a trance like walk...while she murmurs robotically "need any help getting this to your car?" (UM...no thanks, I just bought a pack of Eclipse gum and some pomegranates!!! Unfortunately, this is my neighborhood safeway. BUT .. there has been plenty of times where I have seen expired package deli meat and things that are actually MOLDING that are on the shelves. Oh yeah ... they recently got some creepy "security guard" asian lady that is a WEIRDO. Safeway never was high on my list of favorite grocery stores. Someone should do this mini-Safeway a favor and put it out of its misery. Small, bad selection, unhelpful staff, and NO passover food during passover. Look, I'm not super-jew but during Passover I expect to be able to buy some matzos and maybe some other stuff. The lady I asked about them looked at me funny before shaking her head no. I wouldn't have believed her, except I had already walked the length of the store twice looking for her and my matzos. Ever tried to make a peanut butter & jelly matzo sandwich with peanut butter, jelly, & pita chips? It's a complicated disappointment. To close things on a sour note as I'm leaving the Safeway 18-wheeler is trying to maneuver into the loading dock. Doing this means he blocks the entire parking lot for about 5 minutes. Then to top it off they had a truck full of gas cylinders that had been blocking the loading dock and rather than go around the block and coming back in to park, the driver first tried to back up into the line of 6 cars that had been waiting patiently to leave. Genius. read more

This is a review of two different people in the Deli department: Mr. Nice guy: his excellent customer service saved the whole grocery store from getting a "one star" from me. I was in line one evening for some chicken strips. He said to the lady in front of me who had a kid with her, "it's dinner time and you guys must be hungry. Are you sure you don't want more?" Sometimes it takes that extra touch to wrap up a sale. Female dog: she always talks extremely loud in the store. Not only was she inattentive to the line that was accumulating because she was busy cleaning up in the back, she was rude to the people who'd been waiting for her to finish! One time I asked if I could pay for my order with her. She said yes. I used my Debit card and asked for $60 cash back. When she saw her registered opened, I kid you not but she smacked her lips and said she didn't expect me to get cash. She said grudgingly that she didn't have enough 20s. So she took a bunch of $5s out, counted them in front of her and put that small stack of $5s right in front of her (rather than counting them and gave them to me). Without saying anything, she left that money there and walked away. She won the Female Dog Award. read more

I remember the days of Costco when I was a wee little thing and, come 12 noon, my father and I were there, hand in larger hand, perusing the aisles and sampling the Little Smokies and Frozen Pizza cut into inch-by-inch squares. I live alone now and so the need to buy toilet paper in bulk has ceased and I rarely find myself in Costco. Safeway, enter stage left. You walk in the Monterey Safeway and you are at once immersed in the odor of their "gourmet" soups! And lo and behold your eyes narrow in on a familiar object of the past - could it be?! Hark! A sampling cup! You scoop the viscous mess into your 2 ounce bowl and delight in the warmth that radiates through the plastic. Eat up, because as pathetic as the sensory experience, this is as good as it gets at the Monterey Blvd. Safeway. This seems to be one of the few Safeways that has not gone under recent renovation. Let me rephrase that, this Safeway is tiny and dingy. Let me rephrase that, this Safeway fucking sucks. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Safeway! If Safeway were a liquid, I would bathe in it! If Safeway were a dog, I would walk Safeway every day adorned in a complete doggy outfit and rhinestone collar. If Safeway were a condom, I would put it on and screw as people as possible before it broke! I LOVE Safeway. But this Safeway fucking sucks. There is an extremely limited supply of EDIBLE produce, they are always understaffed at the deli (and just standing there looking rather useless when they're present), the checkers seemed to have "checked out" most of the time (slow and/or stupid!), the organic/'health food'/not nasty section is about as existant as UFOs, and to top it all off - they were closed last time I attempted to buy Gardenburgers at 3 am. LAME. The only reason it's getting 2 stars is because I am here all the time (I live within walking distance) and the security gaurd hasn't caught on to my penchant for eating things I don't always get around to paying for (MMM...cookies). read more

I had a BAD experience at this Safeway I was picking up a few items on my way home from an evening class at CCSF. The store was very busy and there were long lines at the checkout. While I was waiting in line a man cut into the line behind me. The people behind him asked if he was in line and he rudely said that he didn't know where the line was and he was going to stay where he was. He then started to become very agitated and vocal about slow the line seemed to be moving, directing loud and obscene language at the cashier and the other customers. He appeared to be intoxicated At no time did any of the store employees or security guard say anything, try to diffuse the situation. They also shouldn;t have been selling him additional liquor. Also, the shopping carts and baskets at this Safeway (and most others) are super NASTY - covered with grime, filth, and god knows what - Even the check out counter had some sick looking mold growing in the corners! And this is where we put our food! YUCK! read more

This is the Safeway they've left to remind us what a supermarket in a third world country would look like. Forget the terrible selection, cranky employees, and stench of a generation gone by, it doesn't even have an ATM. All of this is actually not Safeway's fault, they've been trying to remodel this store for over 3 years but it's stuck in the planning process as the neighbors who prefer this decrepit monument have slowed the process down to a crawl. Seems awfully counterproductive as an upgraded Safeway would really liven up a pretty decrepit Monterey Boulevard. No, Cell phone reception. So, I can't see what coupons I have loaded. This location is in need to a make over. soon....

Pretty weak offering from the weakest grocery chain I know of. Some sale items are not actually sale items, just misplaced items. You get store credit if you return it the same day... 'store policy' supposedly. I go here to recycle bottles, but randomly they can fill up on glass or have the machine break so I end up having to go to Mission and compete with the hordes of elderly ladies insisting that non-CRV bottles are redeemable. I'm glad to have this place nearby, and it has a good number of items you might need, but a remodel should be underway. Monterey is way more run down than the rich people that live there realize and this could be the anchor of revitalization. read more
