For decades, I have heard people rave about the Haines Steak House. Fans were devastated when the…read morerestaurant burned down in the late 1980s but elated when the then-owner rebuilt and returned it to its previous renown through the Pacific Northwest. Over the Labor Day weekend, our group of six was camping at Union Creek, between Baker City and Sumpter and decided to drive the short distance to Haines to eat at the steakhouse. We expected steakhouse prices, so that wasn't an issue. But those were the smallest portions I've ever seen. I based my observation through comparisons with Chandlers in Boise, the RingSide and Saylor's Old Country Kitchen in Portland and St. Elmo Steak House in Indianapolis. I ordered the beef sampler, which included brisket, ribs and prime rib. It truly was a sampler. There was hardly any meat. The ribs came with barbecue sauce but the brisket and prime rib didn't seem seasoned at all, which meant they didn't have much flavor. And with the prime rib, they wouldn't let me choose a temperature. What I got was medium rare. That was a new one for me, to take what they brought me. The baked potato must have come from Oregon. It certainly wasn't one of the massive bakers Idaho is known for. Again, based on other steakhouses I have eaten at, the potato was very small. My wife ordered prime rib, medium, and what she got was also medium rare. Maybe it only comes in one temperature! The salad bar was a throwback to the 1950s and '60s. Uninspired lettuce, but a large selection of add-ons and dressings. I hadn't seen Catalina dressing in decades, but they had it! The honey mustard I opted for was good. I don't care for old-style chili they served but my wife said it was good. Likewise, one of our companions said the baked beans were very good. Our waitress brought an extra basket of cowboy bread, which was good. She also brought a refill carafe of Pepsi for one of our guests and me. That was nice. It took a long time for our orders to come out from the kitchen. With a party of six, that's understandable, but it would have been nice if our waitress had checked in and given us a status report while we waited. Overall, we were disappointed. After we got back, an Internet search revealed the restaurant was for sale and was in closing. Maybe the Johnson family got tired and that's the reason we didn't have the stellar experience we anticipated. Hopefully, the new owners will return the Haines Steak House to its previous glory.

After checking out a few places online, we decided to head to Lattitude 45 Grille for dinner. Pulling up to the venue, you notice how updated and pretty the joint is. There are a couple tables outside and beautiful potted flowers in the front, it's quite welcoming. Walking in, we were instantly greeted. We got sat in a small room that had a couple tables. It was separated from the main dining area. I appreciate the room we were in cause it created more of a personnal environment for my friend and I. The room was bright and vibrant. I love the big windows, it gave us a great view. I did check out the menu online. I noticed they had lobster manicotti. I was sold! Pasta, lobster and sauce, you can't get better than that! We breezed through the menus again while our drinks were getting taken care of. As many times as I looked the menu over and over again, I couldn't find the lobster manicotti. The waitress confirmed that they didn't offer it anymore. Such a bummer cause it was the only thing that really caught my eye. For dinner I settled for the chicken fontana with the pesto sauce on the side. I also got alfredo as my side since it was an option. I like that they give you pasta options as a side besides your typical fries and salad. Our meals came out super hot. I got a beautiful piece of chicken and a nice portion of alfredo. I can tell the pasta was freshly made, I was pretty close to burning my mouth cause of hot it was. The sauce on the pasta was rich and creamy. I did add a little salt and pepper to it, it needed just a pinchmore salt. The chicken was flavorful! Whatever they used as a crust on the chicken, it was nice! I used some of the alfredo sauce to dip the chicken in. The chicken was good but it was also kinda dry and there wasn't much cheese in the middle. The alfredo sauce really was needed. Our sweet server got a piece of the peanut butter cheesecake for my friend's birthday. She also put a birthday candle on the cheesecake for her. Little gestures like that are the best. The cheesecake was delicious! It was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. It had a good amount of chocolate on top. There were pieces roasted peanuts in the cheesecake that added a nice crunchy texture to it. It's a must have. Lattitude 45 was packed when we were leaving. Clearly they are doing something right. Service was great. The venue is beautiful. They produce good food. I'm happy we got to check this joint out and celebrate my friend's birthday here. I don't know when we will ever be back but if we are, we will definitely come back. And hopefully by then lobster manicotti will be on their menu!

Unfortunately didn't take the advice and got what we thought sounded good, which turned out not to be.
