At the very beginning of our lease we had a couple of issues but after I wrote an email to Chris, the manager, we have had nothing but good experiences.

It's unfortunate that this is the only choice for on-campus housing at UMSL other than dorms. My…read moredaughter lived there for two years. From the beginning, it was just an extremely frustrating experience. The contract is a joke. The place could quite literally burn to the ground, and contractually you still have to pay rent while they have no obligation to provide alternative accommodations. I would never have signed the contract given any other viable choice. On move-in day year 1, which was limited to no more than 3 days before classes started, the deadbolt lock froze up. The maintenance man busted lock through the door frame to get us in, then left with no way to secure the apartment. Said he'd be back the next day to fix it. Next day? No way I was leaving my daughter with no way to lock her door. Had to buy a temporary rekeyable lock to key to the original keys and piece the frame back together so she and her roommate wouldn't be left unprotected. It ended up being 3 months before they finally came back to fix the frame and replace the lock, then had the nerve to say we shouldn't have done any repairs ourselves. Spiders were a problem, so my daughter was constantly spraying peppermint spray, which spiders don't like, to keep the spiders at bay. One of the panes in her double-pane bedroom window was broken before move-in. It was the summer between years 1 & 2 before that got fixed. They charge monthly rent for the furniture, which was supposed to be all new at move-in. Not only was everything not new, there was no couch or chair in the living room. After several complaints and at least 2 months, they finally got the chair, but no couch. After more calls and requiring a partial refund on the furniture rent, they finally got a used couch that had only one useable sitting spot. We were eventually told the couch, which had supposedly been on back order, wasn't coming and it would be the next year before it was replaced. I about lost it. My daughter was adamant about not living in the dorm, so against my better judgment, we signed up for a second year. Big surprise, when my daughter checked with her roommate, who had stayed the summer, there was still no new couch three days before move-in year 2. After an angry call, they finally delivered the new couch. The furniture "rent", which started at $50/month and increased to $55/month year 2, would buy everything in that apartment over the course of 2 years, especially considering they get that x2 when there are roommates. Two or three last things that were ridiculous were that move-in is mid-month, but they charge a full month and still limit you to moving in the weekend before classes start. Same thing with move-out. It's mid-month, full month's rent and have to be out the weekend after classes end, and they only have someone in the office until 1:00pm on move-out weekend making it about impossible to demand an inspection and return of security deposit before turning in keys. Lastly, before writing this, and what triggered me again, was calling about the security deposit refund. I was told it takes them 60-90 days to issue the refunds, and they send them snail-mail. Given their history, I can almost guarantee that won't happen without a nasty call or visit. I'm sure there were other frustrations, but I think that proves my point. Good luck, if you can't find any other option.

Especially when I have pain in my legs/back since I suffer from a disability, its easier to get to class when the location of where I live is closer. Second, the Starbucks deluxe machine in their internet cafe has CHAI TEA LATTE which is perfect for me because I don't drink coffee. Sidebar: I used to live at standard, but decided not to sign again because I couldn't afford to pay the high rent even with the renewal discount they offered. After knowing that the University Heights Lofts now called the City Lofts Laclede went through a million dollar renovation and management transition I decided to give it a tour. The only difference I noticed between the two apartment complexes was the fact that Standard comes furnished and washer/dryer in house. I can overlook these differences due to the obvious price difference. With the lofts, my living room square space is bigger which means my roommate and I can bring our own furniture and furnish the place to our tastes. I also adopted a rescue dog recently and love that there is a fenced area behind the parking garage for my dog to roam around freely without a leash. Staff is always helpful and ready to go the extra mile to help us out.

Washing and drying your clothes is free, which is really nice as they have accommodations. What are some bad things about City Lofts? The roof is leaky, so instead of fixing it they like to put buckets around the building to catch the rainwater. If they miss a spot, expect flooding. The main office has this interesting policy where they will try not to release packages to you until they have it "checked in" and you "notified" even though you paid for the package with your own money. So yes, they will keep your package hostage essentially. The office itself closes at 6 PM so if your package arrives at like say, 3 PM, they will keep it until the last minute or sometimes the very next day. You have to insist you need it right then and there. Finally, if you are attending SLU's school of nursing or medical school, City Lofts is a 25 minute walk and a 10 minute bus ride away. If you want to understand how City Lofts views it's residents, please take a look at this photograph attached to this review. This photo was found in one of its elevators.

After 5 months of back-and-forth, paperwork, approvals, and jumping through every hoop required--including a fully signed lease by all parties and housing voucher approval--this property management company canceled the agreement at the very last minute for no legitimate reason. Let that sink in: five months of process, only to be denied housing over attitude and ego. Ms. Harris and Ms. Charity were consistently rude, dismissive, and openly hostile throughout this process. Basic communication--such as simply asking how much was due at move-in--was treated as an inconvenience. Instead of acting professionally, they responded with irritation and ultimately used that as justification to cancel a legally executed agreement. This is not just poor customer service--this is a complete failure of professionalism, accountability, and basic respect. People are depending on housing, and to drag someone through a months-long process just to pull the rug out at the end is beyond unacceptable. If you value your time, your stability, and being treated with basic decency, do not put yourself in a position to rely on this management. I strongly recommend documenting everything and proceeding with extreme caution

Let me start by saying that Gentry's Landing does have some positives, but in my experience the…read morenegatives ultimately outweighed them. When I first moved in during the summer, many residents were friendly and seemed excited about building a sense of community, which initially made me hopeful that this would feel like home. However, as I began to socialize and spend more time around the building, I became increasingly concerned about the professionalism and conduct of certain individuals working behind the lobby desk. In my opinion, majority of their behavior came across as predatory and lacking appropriate self-control or social awareness, which made interactions uncomfortable. I also had concerns about the background and professionalism of some members of the maintenance and leasing staff. It often seemed as though individuals with questionable pasts were being placed in positions of responsibility within a building that markets itself as "luxury." While I believe people deserve second chances, I did not always feel confident in the competence or professionalism of the maintenance work being done inside residents' units. Another major issue was the cleanliness and general condition of the building's common areas. The hallways frequently had strong and unpleasant odors, including body odor, vomit, and marijuana, which created an uncomfortable living environment. Additionally, it often appeared that the leasing office was not particularly selective about who was allowed to live in the building. There were times when the environment and the individuals coming and going made both me and my friends feel unsafe. From my perspective, many concerns seemed to be overlooked or swept under the rug rather than properly addressed, which reflects broader issues with how the building is managed. Management leadership, particularly Julie, was especially disappointing. In my opinion, there was little effort to uphold higher standards when it came to staff professionalism, tenant oversight, or maintaining the building's overall cleanliness and appearance. Living at Gentry's Landing is ultimately a personal choice, but based on my experience, I would caution prospective residents to carefully consider whether the environment, management practices, and overall standards align with what they expect from a place to live.

The university is offering counseling and support for others in the building and has also offered assistance in helping them move to another residence should they feel a move is necessary. University City police and Washington University police are increasing security patrols in the area.
