I rarely write reviews, but I thought I'd send some love to local businesses that have brightened my 2017 with awesome products and services. Here's what I love about From the Farmer: great customer service, convenient early morning delivery, delicious and high quality local produce and meats, that super awesome Thanksgiving delivery (the pastured turkey was fantastic!), good value for the quality received, ability to adjust items in the box according to preferences, etc. What really prompted me to write this review is the new Supper Club, a total game changer. I've ordered other meal kits from various companies over the past couple years, and From the Farmer's Supper Club is so far ahead of the competition that I will never go back (and I love it so much that I order every week!). Here's why it's in a league of its own: 1. Prepared by a DC-based chef and kitchen with locally sourced meats and ingredients. 2. Meats are already marinated, sauces and dressings are prepared, all you have to do is a little cooking (under 30 minutes) to throw everything together. It actually delivers in convenience, unlike other services. 3. Every meal has been uniformly delicious. 4. The price! $7.50 per meal. You also have to count the amount you pay for the small produce box into the price (some of the ingredients come from the box), but you don't use nearly all of your box in the meals and there are always extras. 5. The recipe cards are thoughtful and helpful. 6. It's a great way to learn how to use different items in the box, and a good way to make sure you don't waste anything. I just cancelled my subscription after 7 months. Pros: -Overnight home delivery - can't beat it for ease of use. Cons: -Just about everything else. Since I joined in January, every week we've gotten at least one inedible item (usually moldy). A month or so ago, they got rid of the ability to reduce items you didn't want in favor of more of the things you did want, which had been a lifesaver after weeks. and weeks. and weeks. of apples, lettuce and kale in every. single. order. There's a farmer's market every other block in DC at some point during the week, so I'd rather spend that $35 on stuff that I can see the quality of, and will actually use (what the hell are pickling cucumbers? Do you think I have time to pickle things?!) read more

From the Farmer is simply the best. The weekly delivery service is flexible, reliable, and the quality of the produce is excellent. In the rare occasion that something happens to be damaged during delivery (an orange was smashed), then the amazing customer service team takes care of it immediately (account credit). The customer service team is easy to communicate with, responds promptly, and demonstrates a real care and consideration for their customers. I also love the pantry add-ons. In addition to the weekly half-share I receive, I also enjoy having the choice to add on additional meat, dairy, coffee, and produce items. The selection changes weekly and is focused on local businesses. Another perk is that From the Farmer makes meal planning super easy - the suggested recipes are fun to look through and try. I can't say enough positive things about From the Farmer! They make it so easy to support small farmers and get super fresh and wonderful produce each week. I also love some of their prepared food -- all healthy and non-processed. The ability to stop this service if I travel and to pick what I am getting each week makes it very user friendly. From the Farmer (FTF) is a God send! Let me preface this review by saying I NEVER keep any kind of subscription service for food delivery. I'll try it on a coupon but not subscribe until I found FTF. A neighbor told me they get a weekly delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables for $29! That's certainly in my budget and I don't always have time to get to the farmers market. I gave it a try and I am so glad I did. The quality of the food is top notch. The customer service is super easy. I had a ton of questions before I started and the the responses to my emails were swift and informative. Since trying the service there are a few unexpected surprises that really set FTF apart in my eyes: 1. They send an email with tips on the best way to store your items. I've learned a lot in the past month on how to keep my veggies crisp, things from put asparagus in a glass of water to put other veggies in a plastic bag before I put them in the crisper drawer in the fridge. 2. The vegetable variety has improved my cooking skills. I've had to get creative with my recipes because each week there's something there that's not in my usual repertoire. I don't normally go for bok choy or radishes but I've been happy to have something in my fridge that makes me try new things. 3. The online setup is super easy. I like that I can skip a week, preview the items, swap things out, add more of this or less of that. 4. I like that I can browse for other good add-ons such as fresh breads, meats, jams, dairy etc. Most importantly they have sales (I love this word, makes me giddy if I think I'm saving). 5. The FTF communication is impressive. They send emails to remind me to make changes to my delivery before the deadline, emails the night before my delivery reminding me to put my cooler bag out for pick up, emails confirming delivery and the email on storage tips- I love it. For a busy person this place makes sure to send reminders so you can get what you want. Most of all what I really love is through this subscription I'm supporting the little guy in my area. When given a choice of how I spend my money, I'd rather support the little guy or independent business owner in my area than a mega chain like Safeway or Starbucks. I'm SO glad I chatted with my neighbor and got a referral to this service. read more

After two weeks with From the Farmer, I have become a devoted customer. The produce has arrived in great condition, and the weekly bushel is flexible. If there's an item you'd rather not have, you can remove it and increase the amount of another item. If you are going to be gone for a week, you can suspend. You can add a number of other tasty looking items to your delivery as well. Additionally, the customer service is amazing. The team is very responsive to all of my questions and have been able to navigate a number of delivery challenges (ones not caused by them). They also send weekly emails with storage tips and recipes. I am very pleased with the service and would highly recommend this CSA. read more

Absolutely love this service. While it may be slightly more expensive than a regular grocery store (which is why I get shipments every other week), I love it because the quality is great (growing up with homegrown vegetables-they taste better than store bought!). Also, I often get shipped things that I'm not familiar with or haven't cooked with frequently, forcing me to get creative. Also, their customer service is excellent! Just got my second red bag delivery, filled with beautiful, fresh produce delivered to my back door. I can't wait to eat a lunch salad of amazing arugula, peppers and radishes I threw together from my delivery along with a lovely apple for an afternoon snack. We have tried fruit and veggie boxes (previously reviewed) and just started receiving the prepared meals. It's been a positive experience and has expanded my teenage son's palate. I get two meals each Friday and it makes cooking something tasty on Monday & Tuesday night (around activities) much easier. It's really nice to have all the ingredients you need to make something fresh at home. Plus, even though some parts of the recipe are prepared in advance, you are still cooking, so it's fun. Favorites so far, pan sauteed shrimp, milanese chicken breast, spiced sweet potato mashed. I like being introduced to ways to prepare things I already know plus being introduced to veggies I never knew what do with! read more

I've been receiving produce deliveries from From the Farmer for several years now with no complaints. For the most part, the produce I receive is very good quality. Their customer service is excellent and when the quality of the produce doesn't turn out so well for certain items they are quick to provide some kind of compensation. I love the variety of the items that can be purchased from their site too. I'll continue to use From the Farmer and would recommend anyone in their delivery area to try it out. read more

Pros: - Easy to use - Bags + Baskets are beautiful (I don't want to return mine, but I will) - Excellent customer service - Great quality food Cons: - I don't want to return my bag! :) I love having food delivered to me. I love that I can pick and choose what I want (plenty of carrots for this girl) and don't have to worry about where the food comes from. I consider myself a produce snob, selecting only the best of what I find a Farmer's Markets - I'm still amazed that From the Farmer delivers BETTER produce than some of the best farmer's markets stands I have visited in the past. The BEST peaches I had all summer were From the Farmer and I grew up in a peach orchard eating peaches so I know what's good. I'd recommend it to anyone, absolutely outstanding. read more

From the Farmer is one of the best things that's ever happened to our family's eating habits. I've been enjoying fresh, local goods delivered to my doorstep once a week for a year and a half now, and I still feel like I'm unwrapping a present every time I get my big red bag. I don't have to think about what to buy that week unless I want to. Some busy weeks I just let our regular order, which includes veggies, fruit, fresh bread and pastured eggs, come; this is great way to try new things, too. Romanesco? Kiwiberries? Watermelon radishes? I love them all and tried them first here. Other weeks I get in there and customize and add specific things we need. I order meat as needed and it's all been excellent (try their bacon, if you haven't yet!). It's also a convenient way to pick up favorite local brands (Cava hummus, Soupergirl soups, Bionic bars...yep, tried them all here first). I had never used a CSA before From the Farmer, and now I don't think I'd ever want to use a different one. I first signed up with them in 2014 for a few months, then moved away for a few years, and signed back up in the spring of this year. They've expanded quite a bit since my initial experience with them, adding the online store, which is a great offering. So, what's to like? First off, the weekly produce boxes are wonderful--5-7 items a week, with an email sufficiently in advance so you can plan the rest of your shopping (I get Wednesday deliveries and the email shows up the Saturday prior). There's usually a good balance between fruit and vegetables (a couple fruit items, the rest veggies), and sometimes there's fun stuff like apple cider. I like the flexibility to swap items in your box--take a pass on the butternut squash in favor of twice as many apples, say. Second, the online store has some great offerings. I don't shop on there a lot, but I've liked everything. They sell this amazing cinnamon-raisin brioche bread, and you may think $11 is a lot for a loaf of bread, but it is ENORMOUS and delicious and will keep well in your freezer so you can make amazing French toast out of it for weeks. There are high-quality sausages, good bagels and a big variety box of mushrooms, among other things. The only thing I'd pass on is the cream cheese; it tastes good, but is small for the $3 or so you pay for it. Finally, the customer service. Not only is the box delivered to your door, but they are so responsive if anything goes awry. This doesn't happen often, but every once in a while, something will--one of those delightful peaches will get a little mushed in transit; an item may be left out of your bag; a different delivery guy may leave your box somewhere else. If you reach out, they are there to help and make things right. This may come in the form of a coupon to the store, an extra serving of an item the following week, or even a back-up shipment of the entire box the next day if yours didn't show up. I always appreciate the effort and the attitude; it keeps me coming back as much as the food does! Keep it up, guys! read more

If I am moving out of the area, From the Farmer will be one of things that I will truly miss. As a company that delivers from farms, yes, their produce and everything else are always delicious and fresh. What really keeps me around is their outstanding customer service. Whenever there is an accident with the delivery (bruises on the fruit, missing items, etc.), they always take care of it with the best attitude in the world! They also try to find out what the cause of the accident is, and promise to improve in the future. I am very amazed by this kind of efforts since I constantly have to fight with customer services from the other companies. Please keep up the good work! read more

I love Fridays so much. I run to the front porch and find my red bags of goodies From the Farmer. Gorgeous kale, perfect oranges, mushrooms from heaven, lettuces of all kinds, quiches to eat or save in the freezer, cheeses to savor. We are addicted to the breads, love their fresh eggs. My shopping has changed completely now. The BEST thing is that when something is missing in the red bag, an actual person responds to my email same day to remedy the problem. I've been using From the Farmer for a number of months now and I have yet to be disappointed by ANYTHING, they are a wonderful company, straight forward, honest, and have a top notch customer service team. A few examples of their amazing service and experiences I've had while using their delivery: * One week I placed an extra order to get a few things, the order was doubled accidentally. I emailed to ask if I should pay or if I could get the items back to them some how, they told me not to worry and to keep everything, the mistake was on their behalf. * One week my sourdough bread loaf did not make it with my bag (possibly my favorite loaf, I was a little devastated). I emailed to ask about it, I was immediately refunded for the missing loaf AND they snuck one in for me with my next delivery, for free. * One Friday I opened my bag to a sample of cheese, and not a puny little one bite sample, this was enough to put on a cheese plate for a party. I've since taken to calling it my "cheer me up cheese" whenever I am trying to explain the pure awesomeness that is FTF to friends and family. It was included free of charge and had an sweet "happy weekend" note with it. These added surprises are not a regular occurrence, but they are super sweet when they do! * One week was supposed to have beans, no beans! instead an organically grown broccoli with a note and apology that the beans were not ready yet. PLUS a follow up email. * I just moved from a high rise building with a 24/7 concierge desk that would receive my deliveries for me to a different building requiring an access code or FOB to get deliveries to my new front door. I've been working with Nathan via email since updating my address and he has absolutely gone above and beyond to help me get this set up for the new address - as far as having to call the building to get an access code for the delivery driver etc. (I am so looking forward to Friday!!) If you are hesitant about getting the same items week to week, then yes, be prepared! Food grows in seasons!!! Some produce grows better than others in the cold! I've been getting loads of apples since this fall and while eating them straight is delicious, any I am not able to get to, turn them into something else. Not to mention I find that there is always a reasonable amount of apples/potatoes/whatever seasonal fruit and veg we're getting. Every Monday I get an email with what I'll be getting listed and 9 times out of ten, it's all things I can work with. If every it's not something I'm a fan of I either a) figure out how to be a fan of it and cook it or b) give it to a friend or neighbor. (Let me say, my mom and neighbor are huge fans of when we get beets and or excess peppers). And price wise, yes, You are paying a bit more for the convenience and in my opinion the quality! I'll be damned if everything I get from FTF doesn't last 2 - 3 times longer than things I buy at the store. Their spring mix has lasted EASILY 2 weeks without showing a single sign of being sad where as bags of greens I've purchased (and no, not only from Safeway, but whole foods) are done in 5 - 7 days. I'd rather pay the bit extra and have the quality and ease that FTF offers. I will absolutely continue to order from and support FTF and am looking forward to many more deliveries! I recently moved from Cali where I was able to get really good produce from local Farmer's Market's and/or CSAs year round. Most of the Farmer's Market's and CSAs in Northern VA don't start till May so I thought I'd give "From the Farmer" a try. Unfortunately, I am NOT impressed! After receiving two deliveries I've been unhappy with the quality, quantity and price of the produce. In my first delivery, the lettuce was a sorry 5-6 leaf thingy... wish I had taken a photo. The tomatoes were the same flavorless crap you get at the grocery store. Thought I'd give it another week and see how it goes. In the second delivery, the cucumbers were the same wax covered crap you get at the grocery store. I am sorry but if I am going to pay $35/week for $10 worth of veggies, they better be heirloom quality! read more

I tried From the Farmer for about 2 months. I've always wanted to try a CSA and I liked how FTF worked as a weekly subscription so I could skip weeks if I needed/wanted. From the get go, FTF was a mess. They messed up my first order with broken eggs, missing my "cooking essentials" add on and more. They gave me a credit and I was willing to give them another shot. The 2nd week delivery also had mistakes. STILL no "cooking essentials" add on and my customizations were missing. Again they apologized and gave me a credit. The 3rd week rolls around and AGAIN my delivery was WRONG. Things were missing, I got produce I didn't ask for or order and my customizations were wrong. I still stuck with them because I was going through law school finals and didn't have time to do my own grocery shopping, but the mistakes continued and finally last week I decided to cancel my subscription for good. Now it seems as though they may be shuttering the business. The idea was a good one, but the execution was terrible. read more

The third week of delivery, they were no-shows! They just stated that they "couldn't find my building" but they were able to find it for the two previous deliveries, and my building is not hard to find. I even sent additional directions, although they should not be needed. Since I still got no response or deliver, I asked for a refund, but they still haven't even bothered to respond. Also, the previous week, I received red onions that were decaying and the entire basket had a stench. The peaches were also badly bruised, and I had discard half of them. This service is very overrated. I will look for an alternative. read more

I tried FTF after using a Guilt City coupon thinking- "after the coupon is over I'll prob never do it because it seemed a little pricey." I am so amazed at the quality of good and customer service and will probably extend when the coupon is over. You actually get more than you think- do you realize how much a bushel is? Even half a bushel?? It's fresh and delivered. Also if you're thinking about itt- they have a 40% coupon now for new customers!! Seriously, just do it! You will not be disappointed. And for the customer service and the ability to customize is pretty worth it! I've never been disappointed and now I'm a really a huge fan of them! "Convert" if you will :) I had to cancel my order the day before and they were so helpful in doing so. The automatic subscription made me wary at first, but trust me it's so easy and you can set it up- when you want. Also, if you hate Brussels sprouts (I don't but I just saying :), you can just say "none" and get more of what you like. So great! My only complaint is I wish I had a longer window to customize my basket. I realize since the food is local and constantly changing, is tough to do. Love you guys..keep it up! read more

The produce, without fail, is AMAZING. Everything in my basket always looks fresh and edible. I especially love the weeks when they throw in things that aren't produce - for example, I got freshly made CHEESE and BREAD in my basket this past week, both of which were incredible! The reminder emails to leave out your basket each week are very helpful (I'd definitely forget otherwise), and I LOVE the weekly emails detailing what will be in your basket and different recipe ideas for each item. I am not a very experienced cook so the tips on how to store each item are very helpful as well. read more

I have not yet encountered a more inept group of people who say they are in business. They cannot deliver product to the location required; they cannot even open a gate. They cannot adequately communicate what is coming in an order; they send what they wish. Their customer service regularly condescends to you in their response. The only highlight is the product of Lyons Bakery, but that is not enough to put up with the weekly irritation. They can't even provide an easy way for you to quit on their badly designed website. I can't speak more highly of From the Farmer. My boyfriend and I decided to try this out on a whim, figuring we could cancel it if we didn't like it, and we absolutely couldn't be happier. We are signed up for the half-bushel and it is the perfect amount for two people. I love that you get an email ahead of time to let you know what you will be receiving because it enables you to plan your meals out ahead of time. You also have the ability to "edit" your delivery so you can choose to nix the items you don't like in return for double of one of the items you do want. They also offer recipe suggestions for each item which is such a nice touch. Lastly, I think the best thing about FTF is their unparalleled customer service. Earlier this week our doorman was away from his desk when the FTF delivery man arrived, resulting in our order not being delivered overnight. By 7:22am the next morning, Andy had already emailed to explain what happened and to offer to get us on the next night's order. We received our order the next night with no problem. I have recommended FTF to my family, friends and coworkers (really anyone who will listen to me). It really is the best. read more

I just received my first delivery from FTF this morning, and I could not be happier! I live in a dorm building and had to work out the delivery process, but the people at FTF were more than accommodating and unbelievably helpful and friendly! Any questions, concerns, requests- they'll get back to you right away and do whatever they can to help. It was so exciting opening my bag to fresh raspberries, kale, cauliflower, peaches, endive, and green tomatoes- I even went online a couple days earlier to request more of what I wanted and less of what I didn't want. I would strongly encourage those considering this, especially those who have never done anything similar before, to try it out! It's hassle-free, and you can really feel good about supporting a local farm and eating local produce, instead of spending almost the same amount at a grocery store like Whole Foods. FTF gets TWO THUMBS UP!! read more

By far the my favorite grocery shopping experience hands down. My girlfriend lives in McLean and has her produce delivered for us to cook with during the week every Tuesday morning. The produce is BEYOND fresh and customer service above and beyond ANYTHING I have ever seen. We had a batch of raspberries that went bad after a day (hey it happens) and they solved the situation, replaced it in the next order with a credit, and apologized. ABOVE AND BEYOND. They even included cooling within the basket to ensure that the produce stayed chilled during those super hot days/nights. A+++++++++ HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

I have been getting a half-basket of produce from this CSA for 4 weeks now, and it just keeps getting better. This last one had the sweetest ripest white peaches and HUGE blackberries, need I say more? Most of the produce has just been beautiful and fresh and organic; rarely is there a dud or bump in the process (currently their 'every other week' choice button is under repair), but these guys have the best customer service I've ever experienced. They are communicative and friendly and try very hard to make you happy every week. Once a squirrel got into my beautiful bakery bread, and even though it wasn't their fault, they comped me for it (now I just leave a cooler out, works great.) They even throw in awesome free gifts once in awhile. I first saw FtF mentioned in several local food blogs (with a coupon!) and then got into this for several of the 'usual' reasons. I was raised on fresh fruit and veggies from the backyard, and want to support small local farmers instead of big farm conglomerates. I missed the variety of fruits and vegetables I know from my past, many of which you can't find in the supermarket, or the quality isn't there; I am very picky. (Guys- I'm waiting for some kohlrabi this fall!) And then there's just no substitute for freshness- if you've never had just-picked string beans, or free-range eggs, you haven't lived. Trust me on this one, just try it, you'll be hooked. But mostly, the convenience of home delivery appealed to me. I have had some health issues this year, let my gardening go, and never enjoyed shopping anyway. I LOVE that they tell me on Tues. what's coming and I can customize it till Thursday, and deliver in a nifty insulated bag in the middle of the night on Friday AM, avoiding the heat of the day, and our area's famous gasoline-guzzling traffic! All you have to do is follow their advice on how to best store the items (most go right in the fridge) and decide how and when to prepare it. They even send recipes with helpful ideas to spark your creativity. The only thing left is going to the store for some meat (see my butcher recommendation) and sundries, and you're done! I find the portions are perfect for me (half bushel- 1 or 2 people), and nothing ever goes to waste. The PRICE is perfect too; initially I thought it was high BUT now, to the contrary, I think it is more than reasonable (and the full bushel size an even better bargain- I'm tempted!) What I've found is - a quite unexpected benefit after joining- I must be more judicious about my meal planning and waste, because - my food bills have been cut almost in half ! And of course I am eating much healthier, loving my fruits and veggies, and loving not walking around the store for hours. I AM ONE BIG HAPPY CAMPER! Just got our first CSA delivery today! Our previous CSA closed down mid season so we decided to try out FTF. It's $7 more than what we paid on average (we paid $600 for a season) and a little less veggies but the delivery is awesome. It was always a struggle with my husband's and I scheduled. There was a mistake that I did on my address and I got an email right away saying it was fixed. Then we got charge more than we were supposed to since we had a discount to be applied. I got an email saying that they did make a mistake, were sorry and fixed it. Awesome service! Will probably stay, not only because we like it but want to support this company. They are really doing it right. read more

Did this for a while after I tried it with a Gilt City coupon. The selection was awesome and the produce fresh. I aso got the fresh bread add-on --- sooooo worth it. It was really great bread - artisian, local and fresh made. It is a little more expensive than some other competitors, but the customer service is great. The ordering and managing of your account is super easy online - you can cancel your delivery for the week, or swap out things really fast. Also, the picnic baskets the delivery comes in are really quality - with insulation and metal handles. They also let you keep a few if you like! read more

I've been using Ftf for almost 2 years and they have been great. I love that you can cancel any week. If you are busy, out of town or just know that you won't be cooking that much that week you can just cancel. There have been RARE times where I've gotten something that is badly bruised and they either give me more the next week or give me a partial refund. Prices are very affordable and you can now adjust what you get. Love them! read more
