I love Hungry Harvest! A few friends of mine signed up for their service, and always raved about it, but I had a Community Supported Agriculture farm share, so I never looked into it further. Then the pandemic hit. My CSA had to find another avenue to fulfill their quota, since workplaces shut down and they could no longer support the hub-site pick-up model. I signed up for Hungry Harvest in a panic, not knowing how I would get food on my table, and I am SO GLAD I DID! HH has been fantastic! The quality of their produce is excellent. I recommend HH to anybody. Great, customizable variety of regular and offbeat veggies and fruits. MUCH better quality, taste, and price than local chain grocer. Also get milk, eggs, other dairy, drinks, and bread here- all organic, all top-notch. Saves me time and money. I cook what my refrigerator tells me to cook so the variety from HH lends itself to a lot of experimentation- with usually delicious results. Also delivery always timely with text notifications. We've been hungry harvest subscribers for years, maybe 6 or 7 now. It's a great idea and we love the concept and social responsibility behind the business. However the last year or two things have really gone downhill. Missed delivery times, always late, sometimes by an entire day. Our produce is increasingly of poorer quality with many items going bad within a day or delivery. Quality control seems non-existent. It's not uncommon to open our box and find moldy or rotten veggies or fruit. We've always been evangelists for the service but given how poor the product and service has become we're less inclined to recommend them. We'll likely be moving to a local CSA as soon as we find one that fits our needs. read more

I have been a hungry harvest devotee for over a year. We get a mini box of veggies/fruit, along with a weekly delivery of eggs. The eggs are extra large and make really good soft boiled eggs for my husband to take on the go. The veggies like carrots and yams are so necessary in our house since we make our own dog food and we have a veggie eating bunny. For a box that comes with irregular produce that could not be sold in stores, I have had no issues with quality. Every once in awhile you'll get an eggplant that might be so obscenely big its almost perverse, but mostly you get either mini or jumbo sized versions of your favorite produce. They also sell grocery items like yogurt that may have a shorter shelf life period. We usually get items we like and there is a list for disliked items, and every box usually has a new to me item. Usually the things I get frequently that I love are pineapples, tomatoes, onions and cucumber. I had no clue what Japanese sweet potatoes were or what exactly to do with rhubarb but they do have featured recipes on their insta and website. Our delivery gets dropped off on a Thursday, we get a text when it is on the way. Never had an issue with delivery or even a single broken egg. What's even better their boxes are so sturdy we reuse them, right now our pet Easter bunny is using the boxes as housing/chew toy. I am especially grateful for their service and delivery drivers during COVID, they have kept us all stocked with produce. What's even better they deliver butter lettuce and other greens sometimes packed with dirt and roots. I managed to plant these and now I have a hungry harvest garden going. It was recently brought to my attention that there are produce delivery services that rescue rejected but perfectly edible food from being sent to landfill. I was so excited to learn that Hungry Harvest delivers to South Florida! I found a $5 discount code (you can find a ton of them, I even have a referral code) and ordered the Mini Organic Harvest box ($28). I debated between the regular Mini Harvest ($17) and the organic but ultimately splurged on organic. It is my understanding though that even the regular Mini Harvest box sometimes comes with organic and they tend to be produced locally so that's an awesome deal. Shipping is under $4 unless you place an order for $29.90. There are add-ons, like garlic and lemons, and you can customize what you want exactly in the box for $1.50. You can customize and add a few extra items that are already in the week's box to meet the free shipping. Once they figure out what will be sent out for the week, you get the list and then you have the option to skip delivery or customize the order. What's great about this list is that they actually tell you why that item was going to be sent to landfill (too small for stores, overproduction, cancelled order, blemishes, etc). If you don't want to pay $1.50 to customize, you can always create a Never List so you know they won't put that particular veggie you don't like in your box. I've ordered two boxes so far and I was pleasantly surprised both times. Based on the list they sent me and knowing what their reason was for rejection, everything was as expected or better quality than what I have seen in some big grocery chains around here. This is a great way to eat veggies and fruit that you don't necessarily consume regularly and stock up on your staples at the same time, all while helping reduce food waste. When my daughter learned that the apples and mushrooms she just ate today were supposed to go to trash, she cried and said she's sad for them if they were wasted. Hungry Harvest collects produce from local farmers that the box stores did not take. It can be slightly "ugly" produce (which tastes perfectly fine) or surplus harvest that the stores didn't purchase. You sign up to get a box (size of your choice) each week and it gets delivered on the date assigned to your area. You are assigned a local liaison who will email you each week to remind you to customize your harvest and give you details about where each produce item came from/why it was chosen. Customer service is super friendly and responsive, so fear not if you have questions about anything. Being the moderate veggie eater that I am, I get the mini harvest for myself and have plenty to get me through the week. The cost is $15 plus a roughly $3 delivery fee, so not bad at all. You get 2-3 different fruits and 4-5 different veggies. The website is very easy to navigate and it tells you what you are getting starting on Tuesdays at 12pm. The delivery does not come until Fridays, but you get to go back into your Never List and add things that you do not like in your box. If there are things in your box that are on your Never List, the company will switch them out for a mystery other produce when packing up your box. Over the past few months, I have noticed some issues with the fridge life of the lettuce, pretty much all lettuce types. Becuase I do not eat it fast enough, within a day or two, I have had to throw out lettuce in the past. To solve this, I have put lettuce on my Never List and have just bought lettuce from the store when I need it. I have been receiving Hungry Harvest boxes for several months now and I have been happy with the whole process overall. Hungry Harvest is awesome! My family is vegetarian and we eat tons of produce. The best thing about Hungry Harvest for us is trying new and less popular items. My wife likes the cooking challenge. When was the last time you peeled and enjoyed fresh lychees? Hungry Harvest sent them to us, and our five year old daughter had a new instant favorite. The grown ups loved Indian eggplants-- so tiny and yet so delicious when stuffed. All of the items are fresh. You can create a "never" list including the stuff you don't care for, and they won't send it to you. We customize our harvest (again, five year old taste buds, here), which is also super easy. They try to use minimal packaging, and I enjoy receiving text updates about my deliveries. We are a family of three and order the Full Harvest. It's also super easy to skip deliveries. I've been enjoying my Hungry Harvest box for six months now but with frequent travel skipped the box more often that I got it (the HH system made it very easy to schedule and pause deliveries). Now that we're homebound, our Hungry Harvest box is a weekly staple and a huge highlight as we wake up every Sunday to a beautiful box of fresh produce. While initially billed as an "ugly" produce box, it's more of a "this is weird size" or "there's too much of it already in stores" box and the produce is usually lovely. On the few times it has been delivered past its prime, a quick email to customer service has resolved the issue. Your first delivery also comes with a nice guide to using/storing fruits and vegetables which is a nice bonus. Each week you can add on "marketplace" items which range from kombucha to bread to matcha cashews - some staples are always there but there is a lot of variety to choose from as well. Another nice feature is the "no-list" which indicates items you never want in your produce box. This helps guide the mini-produce boxes while the full produce boxes are completely customizable for no extra fees. You can also get a just fruit or just vegetable box. I've really appreciated the HH staff stepping up communications about how they are working to keep staff and customers safe, and keeping up good quality and diversity of food during COVID. Some items have sold out before making it to my box and they are quick to let me know and offer reasonable substitutions/credits. I added Hungry Harvest to my family meal planning rounds about a year ago. I am a chef and just wanted something delivered to my door so I could prepare my family meals without a production. I don't really look at the order prior to arrival except to add eggs and anything else I see from the add on section that seems worthy of a try. Everything has been packaged well and arrives fresh and ready to go. I like that I get specific notice about the delivery itself so I can make sure nothing sits outside for too long (although there are a couple of ice packs in the box). The cost is only slightly higher than shopping around, but the convenience makes this a non issue in my opinion. I'm still in love with hungry harvest and have recommended it to all of my coworkers. They even have produce in a SNAP markets so low income residents can purchase quality produce for $9-10 using their benefits. Since signing up, I have completely changed the way I consume and prepare food. I used to spend tons of extra money buying foods that were processed and pre-prepared because I assumed it would be too difficult or a nuisance to prepare it myself (like steaming broccoli or cauliflower only takes like 5 minutes to cut up, rinse and steam in a bowl with saran wrap on it lol). Look I love this company and this service. I don't think I have a negative thing to say about it. Other than the mobile website gives me a bit of angst sometimes. It's not too expensive (certainly less than I would spend at the grocery store), it's convenient, the produce is fresh and delivered fresh, and it makes me feel better about my impact on the world. HH is also seriously customer centric. With updates about company growth and progress, requests for constructive criticism, and actual improvement based on customer reviews. But also updates on how HH is affecting food waste and limiting the amount of produce discarded without practical reason. Every other week (I chose bi weekly deliveries) a box of produce is delivered to my door. I get a text when it's on it's way and a text when it's delivered. I have a love list and a hate list. If the standard weekly shipment includes items on my hate list, they are automatically replaced with items from my love list. But my favorite part? Last year Hungry Harvest helped cut down on like 7% (I believe) of food waste in our country. I know that seems small. But it's 7% more than nothing. And I got to be a part of that. So if you're looking for someone to be the deciding vote and just tell you to go for it, I say give it a try. Seriously, what's the worst that happens? After 4 deliveries, we love this CSA! We have never been CSA people before but the food-waste-avoidance mission of HH was too much to pass up. We get the small veggie box every other week, and it's enough veggies for two people who cook a lot for a full week or so. Occasionally the veggies need to be used right away, but generally I can't understand why a given item would be unsellable! Nothing has ever been beyond its good use point or otherwise unacceptable, and the veggies are often fresher & better than what I get in my local supermarket. I love that you can customize a little -- so we don't receive things we can't use -- but that it pushes us to learn new ingredients, like spaghetti squash or broccoflower. I've been receiving produce boxes from Hungry Harvest for a couple months now and I can't praise it highly enough. Their mission to end food waste and help communities facing food insecurity is amazing and I feel good knowing that I am supporting it while also providing nutritious fresh food for my family. I'm still fine-tuning the frequency & size of the box that's best for my family, but overall, the super harvest gives us a good variety of vegetables and fruits to last two weeks in a household that is mostly vegetarian and whole foods based. I've loved the chance to try produce I might not have otherwise purchased on my own (hello, broccolini and baby bok choy) and the quality of what I've received has been great! You can also customize your profile by adding items to your "never" list. For us, that meant no onions. There's no cost for using the "never" list to customize your harvest. If you check out the harvest menu before delivery and find something else you want to swap or change, it's a pretty nominal fee to customize even more. I'm a bit of a budget geek, so I also priced out my 1st box at my local grocery store and found that it was most definitely cheaper! It's on par with my local farmer's market, but is so convenient! No fighting for parking or sweltering heat while I shop. If organic is something you care deeply about, they also offer fully organic boxes in my area, but I've found with my regular non-organic boxes that most of my veggies are organic anyway because that is just what was available/surplus that shipment. So, if you do organic when you can or if it's convenient, you might be totally fine without springing for the organic box with is a few dollars more expensive. If you're die hard organic, though, it's worth the extra money and still an amazing deal. (Remember, I'm a budget geek, so I've priced it out!) All in all, I would say give them a try. If nothing else, you're helping to reduce food waste and providing for those less fortunate while enjoying a variety of healthy (usually seasonal) fruits and veggies! read more

My husband and I have been dedicated Hungry Harvest customers for about 6 months now--we never skip a box. Hungry Harvest provides us with weekly fresh produce that may have otherwise gone to waste, but don't get the wrong idea... the produce is great quality and delicious, usually turned away for cosmetic reasons or issues of surplus. We love knowing that we're supporting farmers in the area who may not have sold these crops otherwise, and the convenience of having fresh produce delivered to your door every week doesn't hurt :) Going through our HH box is our favorite part of our Saturday morning ritual. Other pros: *The customer service is amazing. Any time I have ever emailed their team, I receive a response within 10 minutes. I am not kidding--within MINUTES. The team is prompt, kind, and professional. *There are a plethora of "add-ons" available each week that include things like Beyond Burgers, fresh bread, honey, maple syrup, herbs, citrus, and tons of other fruits and veggies that might not have been included in your box. Just received my box !!! With the exception of one cucumber with a squish spot ( years of working in produce, I've seen plenty lol it happens fast !) Everything else is great ! This is the super box , they also offer other sizes , all organic and even a just fruit box ! They also have a great referral program! I was recommended by a friend to try hungry harvest. Her exact words were that its recovered produce and is seen as reducing food waste but that the fruit/vegies/food in each box is really tasty regardless of what it looks like. I have been using it for my family of 7 for the past 6 months or so and we customize each week, generally by adding things - on top of the full harvest we now get 4 dozen eggs, gluten free bread, lemons and any other interesting fruit and vegetable that is on offer. I love that we are reducing food waste. The produce is top notch, and we try out things we might not of if we had brought them at the store (eg last week dragon fruit). If they send you produce that isnt up to their standard, they will refund you the cost. Its happened with avocados and plums which were sent but turned out not to be up to their expectations. And after almost 3 months of using HH, I can say that they really keep their promises. Delivery on time, fresh produce, fresh eggs and breads, amazingly tasty fruits and vegetables and I love love love add-ons products. In our area, they deliver on Saturdays AM. So we usually start our weekend brunch with fresh fruits and omelets. I am thrilled with my first order from hungry harvest. My apartment office was closed for deliveries that day but the box was sitting at my door when I came back. The vegetables are all clean and nice, and they included a handy storage booklet. More than enough for one person for a week, and they credited my apricots because they were "soft," however they tasted fine to me. Love this service. It helped us as we transitioned to a vegan diet. The quality of the veggies has been amazing even though they say they're available because their "seconds" in the eyes of retailers. Our only disappointment is that a few pieces of fruit-- too bruised to eat sometimes escapes their quality control to get to us.
