I love stories. I love stories of bravery and rememberence. I love funny combinations too. Froggy bottom as both. This place has been on my list after reading about it in the Washington Post about a restaurant owned by a Vietnamese couple that honour service members on memorial day by serving vets and leaving tables open for fallen service members. The owners do this because they were "boat people" during the Vietnam war and were rescued by American GIs during the evacuation. What makes this place even better is that they serve both happy time foods and pho as late night snacks. It's pretty rare for a Vietnamese restaurant to stay open after 9, and this place is perfect for that. Me and my friend ordered nachos, pho, and spring rolls! All were delicious, and not something I can say Ive had at the same time before lol. This is def one of my go tos when I'm craving food late night! read more

Froggy Bottom Pub is truly one of the hidden treasures of DC. On the outside, it looks like a normal pub-type restaurant. It looks clean but definitely bar food - and if you look at the menu quickly, you might make that same mistake. The menu has things like wings, mozzarella sticks, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and pizza, but if you look closer you'll see there are also Vietnamese dishes mixed in. The website does the best job of explaining the reasoning here with its emotional story about the two owners escaping Vietnam during the war only to be picked up by a Thai fishing boat. The woman was able to move to Paris and gave the man an ultimatum to find her by a certain time, and he ended up showing up on her doorstep right at the end of the limit - they moved to the US and opened a restaurant afterwards. It's such an amazing story I definitely recommend reading the whole thing on their website, but that's the reason for the amazing Vietnamese food on the menu! I ordered the Bun Cha Froggy and the Fresh Garden Rolls, but I'd definitely go back for their Banh Mi and maybe Pho if I was eating in. Everything was amazing, and they even sat me at a table with water while I was waiting for my takeout order. Fresh Garden Rolls ($7) - These are great! They have a nice chewy exterior and are packed full of noodles, veggies, shrimp, and pork. The peanut sauce was a nice addition, but I also dipped them in some of the fish sauce from the Bun Cha which was also very tasty. I'd definitely order these again - and they're reasonably priced! Bun Cha Froggy ($15) - I love Bun Cha - it's like a salad with rice noodles, pickled veggies, and grilled meat. This one was great and came with a HUGE tub of their sweet and tangy fish sauce, which I doused my noodles in. I had enough leftover to eat with the springrolls too, but the Bun Cha was so fresh and tasty with the perfect amount of seasoning on the meat. The steak in the bahn me was slightly dry but overall a flavorful sandwich. You get a good amount of food for the price. The atmosphere is very casual. Service was the one thing that could have been a little better; the bartenders were good but because the waitstaff was so sparse things took longer than they should have. We were looking for a spot to eat after a long day around DC and a Nationals Game and we were in the mood for Pho and stumbled upon this place which was a short 10 min walk from our hotel. Location was easy to find and the place was very clean and well maintained. Service is something that needs to be addressed as we were waiting about 5 mins to be seated even though the place wasn't packed and many tables were open. The bartender and the owner was the only ones doing everything so o think if there was another person hired then it would be better and faster service. The rooms on the other hand was excellent and reasonably priced. I was there with a friend and we both got the Pho Froggy which was very flavorful and the broth was really good too. Portion size was great as well. Going back to the service part again we waited for a long time to get the bill so we could be on our way. Ok on the 4 dollar scale this is a 2 dollar sign location. The food is really more of a basic one dollar food, the location and ambiance is nice enough. The service was friendly and fast. The deep fryer wings were barely basic. The wild poppers are from a bag the same you can get from Sonic for $4. The nachos were fully loaded not a single chip without the goods on it! Came in for the first time with a friend and we wasn't greeted the best but I over looked that and proceeded to order our food. Which by the way was good. Now my second time returning is where the problem takes place. The same young lady that took my order last time was the same young lady who took it this time but over the phone. When I arrived I proceeded to tell her the name I called my order in for. The young lady looks at me and says: will you have chain on of such& such letter, not of the name you gave. So I looked at her sideways and told her what the letter on my chain stood for. She then goes: oh I never heard of that name before I've heard of such&such.. so I'm now confused as to where she is going with this, so then she hands me my food and as I turn to walk out the door she blurs out something that was disrespectful and very uncalled for.So I turned around to check her and she says with a grin oh it was just a joke. But do know management and young lady if you're reading this.....next time I come in there and you say something out of the way, I will slap all taste out her mouth respectfully and see if she take that as a joke. Came across this place because we are looking for "Pho near Dupont Circle" and this came out. I have passed this pub so many times but by the look of it just never thought it sells Vietnamese food! The chicken banh mi was good. The Pho Tai's (beef pho) broth was good as well - noodle was a bit overcooked. Perhaps next time I'll ask to make it more al dente. Just personal preference. The draft amber was solid. We came close to 9PM on a Wednesday, there were only two servers & around 20 patrons (limited menu as well). Given the ratio, service was tolerable. The ambience is actually nice: air-conditioned & clean. The price is quite affordable for downtown. If you are a tourist or in DC on a business trip or a local who is craving late-night pho and beer, I highly recommend this place & looking forward to trying other food. So I go back to eating at the "Frog" to 1997 when it was located on Pennsylvania Avenue. When in DC recently, I popped back in to find the same owners as way back when and food as great as ever. First, we got the wings and mozzarella sticks. The wings have always been a favorite of mine and unlike most places, no changes of note on this great recipe/food. The mozz sticks were as solid as before though the sauce has gotten better than I remember. The thing that kicked this up another notch is the amazing Bahn Mi! My prior times here never included native food from the owners home country. Now, these new additions really hit the spot. A great sandwich with fries that are the right point between crispy and burned, this dish was a big hit for both me and the wife. I will say I do miss the old place ambiance some as I had so many college nights at the Frog, but the new place is clean and somewhat septic, more fitting for a more adult ambiance rather than the old college dive bar type setting the prior location had. read more

I had the Froggy Pho, the house beef pho that consists of more than one kind of meats. The brisket was okay (it was already cooked through and consequently a bit less flavorful when I received it - I probably should have asked for it to be brought out less cooked) but the meatballs were excellent! I was surprised there was no cilantro, but did get the sprouts, lemon, Thai basil, and sauces to dress up the pho to my liking. The broth was good as well. What a great find! I had 3 hours to kill while my wife was having a medical procedure next door so ambled in to have a cold beer or 2. A very casual, warm, and welcoming atmosphere! Didn't take long to make friends with the excellent bartender Sebastian, owner Hien, and a few other patrons. The beers were cold and the fresh veggie rolls absolutely delicious. Froggy Bottoms is a really cute and unique bar downtown because they sell authentic Vietnamese food and great American food all under the same roof. We ordered spring rolls, bahn mi and fries, and the breakfast burger with fries. I loved everything! My favorite was the spring rolls. They were so fresh and packed with veggies and meat. Best ones I've had in a while for sure. Reading previous reviews, I saw some complaints about the bahn mi bread being too hard. I agree that it was, but I dont think it should turn you away from ordering it. It was so good and a little spicy because of the fresh jalapeños in the sandwich. All the veggies were fresh actually and the pork was cooked to perfection! Flavorful and tender. Im a suckered for good French fries and i may come back just for that. They were hot and oh so crunchy! The best way to have them in my opinion. My friend really enjoyed her burger and fries. I hear the beer selection is great! I dont drink beer so I cant speak to it, but everyone else I saw in the restaurant at the time seemed to be really enjoying their selections. Don't wait on visiting this Pub! I stopped by this cute little Pub for late night eats, especially since they had Pho available after 10pm. Froggy Bottom Pub was working off a minimal menu until 11pm and closing at 12 midnight. The service was good, but I did not like that she did not wear restaurant clothing, not even a apron, I think that's inappropriate. In all honesty, it did go with the Decour of the place, which is four walls, an open ceiling and an ugly floor. Meaning , this place is totally lacking of any interior design.
