A Home-Cooked Feel with a Few Rough Edges…read more My first visit to Dona Maria started on a positive note with a warm, friendly greeting that made me feel welcome right away. I ordered the Calisticas with chicken and the Pernil (braised pork). The crispy plantains were one of the highlights of the meal, providing a nice texture and crunch. The pork was tender and juicy, although I unexpectedly encountered a large bone joint in one portion. The chicken cups were less successful. They were noticeably oily and lacked the juicy, flavorful bite I was expecting. The standout flavor of the meal was actually the chimichurri sauce. It added brightness and depth, and I found myself pouring it over nearly everything on the plate. Overall, the experience felt very much like eating at a friend's home--comforting, unpretentious, and made with care. That home-style atmosphere extended to the food preparation as well, which appeared informal (I did see prep without gloves) and may not appeal to guests who expect a more polished restaurant experience. While there were some enjoyable elements, particularly the hospitality, plantains, pork, and chimichurri, the execution of several dishes was inconsistent. A decent meal with a welcoming spirit, but not one that fully lived up to its potential.

Totally okay, it was right at opening and they were probably still setting up, and knowing the industry, I completely understand. I went to the ladies room to wash my hands, and the restroom is TIGHT! When I opened the door and saw how close it was to the first stall, I immediately thought, "Was this a club once upon a time?"...lol total club vibes! Later our server confirmed they do have a DJ & dancing on the weekend. He said they get really busy but it's such a good time. Check them out! Our server was super cool (forgive me for not remembering his name). The agua frescas were so good; wish they'd get mango. We ordered 2 beef & 2 cheese empanadas bc unfortunately, they do not offer beef w/ cheese empanadas. Do not let that discourage you, they were really good, and a bite of each together...yummy! Actually everything was yummy, but the Hubby did say the sancocho needed to be cooked a little longer. I (personally) did not have to add salt to anything, and for me that speaks volumes. I do not like having to season my food. We were told they were out of tostones (delayed produce delivery) so we ordered the fried yuca, but the restaurant ended up getting the plantains and we got our tostones. The Hubby was truly happy bc he said it reminded him of home. Overall we enjoyed and I will say, if I don't cook a Dominican meal at home, I would come to The Dominican Restaurant for my fix! Why ain't nobody tell me that the Trinis had the oxtail game on lock?…read more I've never had oxtail this tender in my life. It fell off the bone. You literally didn't even need teeth to eat these oxtails. The plate came with a lot of food too: A generous portion of oxtails of all different sizes: big ones, little ones, medium size.... But all of them were meaty and incredibly flavorful. It came with my choice of spinach or cabbage. I chose the cabbage, and it was delicious. It also came with rice and peas, two pieces of plantain, and macaroni and cheese. This was a big plate, full of food! But this is Texas, so I'm not surprised. I also wanted a little cocktail, so I asked the lady at the counter if the rum punch was strong. She gave me a slow nod and that should have prepared me, but ya girl was not ready. I got the blue rum punch, I think it was Caribbean breeze flavor. It tasted like it had coconut milk in it, but I couldn't make out the other ingredients. What I could make out was that rum. That rum was loud! And pronounced! I wanted a strong drink and I damn sure got it! How strong was it? Well...I'm not a lightweight but I barely got through a third of the cup. I was feeling it after the first few sips. If I drank that whole thing I knew I was either going to be swinging from the chandeliers or asleep in the middle of a crosswalk somewhere. That rum punch will creep up on you. Y'all better take it from me and sip slow. This is definitely one of the best meals I've had in Texas and, hands down, the best order of oxtails I have ever had.l!
