    The Cuban

FrituWhaaa is located right inside Soul Fire Brewing near downtown Roanoke, and it's absolutely worth checking out! I ordered the loaded fries and the Cuban sandwich -- both were delicious. The fries come loaded with ground beef, cheese, pink sauce, and ketchup, but I'd recommend skipping the ketchup and asking for extra of their amazing green sauce instead -- it really makes the dish. The Cuban sandwich was classic and tasty, with pork, ham, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles done just right. The staff was super friendly and even surprised us with a delicious coconut dessert at the end. Great food, great vibes, and perfect if you're hanging out in the taproom. Definitely worth the visit!

    Pica Pollo

I don't even know where to begin! The nostalgia of seeing the golden-yellow dough of the pastelillo (empanada) was incredible--it was absolutely delicious! I tried both the pizza and beef flavors, and they were amazing. I also had the pica pica pollo with arroz y gandules, and it was beyond good--especially with that incredible green sauce on top! The owners were so warm and welcoming. I even got to learn a bit about them, which made the experience even more special. It's amazing to see our community grow, and I'm so happy to have finally found authentic, home-cooked Dominican food close to home! I cannot wait to go back! Definitely for the sancocho!

A Home-Cooked Feel with a Few Rough Edges…read more My first visit to Dona Maria started on a positive note with a warm, friendly greeting that made me feel welcome right away. I ordered the Calisticas with chicken and the Pernil (braised pork). The crispy plantains were one of the highlights of the meal, providing a nice texture and crunch. The pork was tender and juicy, although I unexpectedly encountered a large bone joint in one portion. The chicken cups were less successful. They were noticeably oily and lacked the juicy, flavorful bite I was expecting. The standout flavor of the meal was actually the chimichurri sauce. It added brightness and depth, and I found myself pouring it over nearly everything on the plate. Overall, the experience felt very much like eating at a friend's home--comforting, unpretentious, and made with care. That home-style atmosphere extended to the food preparation as well, which appeared informal (I did see prep without gloves) and may not appeal to guests who expect a more polished restaurant experience. While there were some enjoyable elements, particularly the hospitality, plantains, pork, and chimichurri, the execution of several dishes was inconsistent. A decent meal with a welcoming spirit, but not one that fully lived up to its potential.

When we first walked in, we stood at the front door for about six minutes with no acknowledgment from any staff. It became obvious no one was coming to seat us, so I had to walk toward the back and ask someone if we could be seated. That should have been the first red flag. After finally being seated, it took nearly twenty minutes for someone to come take our order. Now, over an hour later, we are still sitting here without food. No updates. No apologies. No sense of urgency. This level of service is completely unacceptable. Waiting over an hour for food without any communication is ridiculous. Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing experience, and I would not recommend this restaurant based on the service alone.

Totally okay, it was right at opening and they were probably still setting up, and knowing the industry, I completely understand. I went to the ladies room to wash my hands, and the restroom is TIGHT! When I opened the door and saw how close it was to the first stall, I immediately thought, "Was this a club once upon a time?"...lol total club vibes! Later our server confirmed they do have a DJ & dancing on the weekend. He said they get really busy but it's such a good time. Check them out! Our server was super cool (forgive me for not remembering his name). The agua frescas were so good; wish they'd get mango. We ordered 2 beef & 2 cheese empanadas bc unfortunately, they do not offer beef w/ cheese empanadas. Do not let that discourage you, they were really good, and a bite of each together...yummy! Actually everything was yummy, but the Hubby did say the sancocho needed to be cooked a little longer. I (personally) did not have to add salt to anything, and for me that speaks volumes. I do not like having to season my food. We were told they were out of tostones (delayed produce delivery) so we ordered the fried yuca, but the restaurant ended up getting the plantains and we got our tostones. The Hubby was truly happy bc he said it reminded him of home. Overall we enjoyed and I will say, if I don't cook a Dominican meal at home, I would come to The Dominican Restaurant for my fix! To The Dominican Restaurant: thank y'all so much and continued success & blessings!
