There are so many good non-Starbucks coffee shops in Manhattan, but if you are in theater district I highly recommend Frisson. The quality of the coffee is excellent. It's a cool little place with interesting artwork on the walls. Not a lot of seating but it turns over fast, I've never seen anyone working here. There green tea is also great. Let me be frank - Frisson Espresso is the best coffee shop in the Times Square area. I have officially tried all the small coffee spots (Khave has some great specialty coffees I will say) but Frisson has the best simple and straightforward espresso drinks. It is one of the few low key coffee spots that will give you almond or soy milk with any coffee (a handful of them in Times Square do not steam almond and/or soy milk which doesn't work out for my lactose intolerance). The coffee is strong, but not at all bitter. The prices are not cheap, but this is Hell's Kitchen/Times Square and they are as market as can be. The interior has a dark indie vibe to go with its incredibly tiny space. I admit I only come here before work around 7:45am and there is often only 3 people around so the atmosphere is very quiet and calm. If this wasn't my favorite espresso near work, I would give it a fair 4 stars because there is no bathroom and the space is quite tiny. I wish it were bigger so I could bring some people in while it's busy or do some work peacefully during lunch - however that could take away from the cute indie atmosphere that this hole-in-the-wall cafe offers. read more

We stopped by here for a quick coffee one afternoon and the place was packed so we weren't able to enjoy our coffees on location. The baristas seemed a little detached, though not unfriendly. We ordered a black coffee, which was decent, though a bit acidic. I might try it again if in the area, but it wasn't especially memorable. read more

Good Vibes. Great Coffee. Fast Service. I came in on a Saturday morning around 10ish, and man, this place got packed! There was one girl taking orders and one guy making the drinks and they got everyone in and out very quickly. I ordered 4 drinks and 4 pastries and got everything in under 5 minutes. I'm a huge fan of mochas. Please believe me when I say that Frisson has THE best mocha in NYC! Have I been to all the coffee shops NY has to offer, no, but I just know nothing can beat Frisson. This was such a great hidden gem near Time Square. They were able to do great espresso art with almond milk, which tends to be a difficult task to do because of the consistency of almond milk. In addition, the drinks were perfect drinking temperature. My husband and I didn't have to wait a 1/2 hour in order to drink them. Sometimes the stools all get filled up and there's no place to sit, but this is New York City and that happens and it's a busy area in the theater district. This is a small shop with a few tables, so don't plan to bring a table full of work and expect to have a place for your coffee and a pastry. Instead, bring a friend out your family and enjoy their company over some delicious espresso beverages served by really friendly staff. If latte entices you, theirs is a step up from most. Of course, the coffee taste is the most important part, and I was satisfied with that, too. The pastries were also great.
