    Boat Noodles
    Thach N.

I've been trying boat noodles at different places and so far this is my favorite place

Average food for the price - 3.5/5 Poor customer service - 2/5 We ordered boat noodles, glass noodle salad, iced tea, wontons, and crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli with rice Boat noodles are definitely worth coming back for, but not the rest. Skip the Thai iced tea. It tasted like straight from a cheap canned brand and was already mixed. Pork belly was especially fatty with smallest bit of meat (see photo) Service was initially prompt but staff weren't friendly or attentive once you order

    Pork Pad Kra Pao

First time here and I loved it! We got the Thai boat noodle & pad kra pao, in which both were satisfying and delicious. Coming from a Cali person, this is the best Thai boat & pad kra pao I've had in Minnesota thus far.

Good food, fast service. The area is not the best but the flavorful dishes and service is worth it to support the small business.

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM! This was my first (definitely not last) authentic Burmese cuisine experience. I'm glad to report this restaurant is family owned and operated and really felt as such. The service was sweet and friendly and the food was sooo good. And the prices?! Another big win for them. We ordered: Pickled Green Tea Leaf salad $6.95 Century Eggs with Chinese broccoli Golden Egg Curry in tamarind sauce $6.95 The pickled green tea leaf was so light yet full of flavor and texture. I pretty much ate a dozen eggs on my visit here but ya girl ain't complaining! The golden egg curry was different from any egg dish I've had before and it was full of flavor and not too salty which I like. The century eggs were also a first for me. They look kind of offensive... but also really pretty at the same time, kind of like a geode or dinosaur egg?! The best part - it tastes amazing! They are fried but the yolk is soft in a creamy way, not runny. I'm so happy about my first Burmese cuisine experience, I want to introduce it to all my friends!

Burmese cuisine is of my favorites to consume. I was introduced to it in San Francisco, and I fill myself to the gills with it whenever I'm back on the West Coast. I didn't know we had such an authentic Burmese restaurant here in the Twin Cities! *slaps forehead and picks up a fork* I suck at history and geography, but I think Burma was a nation made up several cultures, so their food is influenced by Southeast Asian flavors from Laos, Thailand, and more. So you already know their food is delicious. When I came to Friends Cafe, I sought out the Burmese specialties. My favorite dish that's uniquely Burmese is pickled/fermented tea leaf salad. I crave this like crazy all the time! It's fresh, salty, tangy, and savory. And very good for you! The shrimp and eggplant Burmese curry was loaded with garlic and fresh ginger... spectacular flavors and big shrimp! We also tried their Chinese broccoli with century eggs. Century eggs are intimidating and look... different... but I like them. These ones were fried so they had a crispy exterior with complemented the extra-creamy yolks. On top of all that, the service was lovely. It's family owned and the young woman who served us was very kind and informative.

Great food and great service! The pricing on Yelp is wrong, and it's actually a little bit more expensive than it says on here. Nevertheless, the eggrolls and Pa Kra Pao were both delicious!

    Boat noodles

Heard that this place had really good boat noodles so I decided to give it a try. The broth was definitely not bad, I just wish the noodles wasn't soggy. Regardless of that, the workers were nice. Their chili pepper & chili oil was spicy! The spring rolls was good, just like the typical spring rolls you get at restaurants.

The sauce that came with it is also a perfect pairing to the dish. The 4 pieces really fill you up so definitely good for its price. Portions are definitely good at this restaurant and you can easily find street parking in the neighborhood behind. Mohinga was okay. It was behind the first two times I came here. The fish cake in Mohinga was tasty as well as the fried peas. The boat noodle has very rich flavor. Broth was good and they gave generous amount of bean sprouts. La Phat Ye was good. They normally don't offer iced but we asked them to change. Overall, it's a great restaurant with decent prices and we hope that we can get back into business ASAP.

In terms of food, there is a mixture of Burmese, Thai, and Karen dishes, and each one that my friends and I have ordered has been a hit. The tea leaf salad has amazing texture because of peanuts and fried garlic, which provide crunchiness, and has amazing flavor because of lemon juice, fish sauce, and tomatoes. The noodle salad has a light taste without adding the given lime piece, and then the rich nutty taste gets evoked and elevated upon adding lime juice. The zaap crispy has very well-seasoned fried chicken pieces, and medium spice level gives it a good amount of flavor. The shan khao soi is so creamy and tasty that even tasting the curry broth itself is a sensational experience, and the chicken leg included literally has "fall off the bone" meat. The boat noodle has a mixture of sweetness and savor, while the sweet flavor does not overpower anything at all. Finally, the mohinga clearly has fish cake flavor and texture fully infused, making it authentically delicious. We also ordered the knyaw iced salad, which was a mixture of ice along with crackers and other types of sweet ingredients. I thought it was very similar to a type of Vietnamese dessert called chè ba màu (three color pudding), and fully enjoyed it. The establishment only had one dessert, and I thought that was sufficient. While the street contains many excellent restaurants, I personally believe that this establishment stands out in terms of taste. I must also mention that since my friends and I arrived when barely anyone else was there each time we had gone there, we never experienced any service delays that some have mentioned in their reviews. I probably will give this place a 5 rating anyway even if I experience slowness, although I hope I don't.

Next, the Fried Brussel Sprouts with the sweet and savory dressing and pork belly is a new personal favorite take on the popular side dish. The Beef Rendang was a delightful mix of spice, herbs, coconut, and tamarind. The beef was tender and the broth was perfectly rich! The toasted coconut milkjam ice cream was an odd, crumbling, dry texture that was not enjoyable. Might be the worst dairy free ice cream I've had unfortunately. I had been on the road traveling for work and was tired of eating out at restaurants, so was like, "I just want to eat in my hotel tonight." So to note-- Panang Curry is hard to eat "to-go" -- but I made it work. I didn't care for the cream cheese wontons. They were just plain, and kind of basic. But honestly, I think I thought I was ordering "crab Rangoons" LOL So here's why they get FIVE stars-- the Panang Curry was the BEST Panang Curry I've ever had. And that is my "go-to" dish anytime I try a new Thai restaurant. And this, honestly, was possibly the best Panang Curry I've ever had. At first I was like, "what the heck, the to-go container isn't even filled all the way to the top." But then after tasting it, I was like, "oh, okay, I don't care. This is SO good." Whenever I'm back in Minneapolis, I would get this again. However, I cannot comment on the ambiance/atmosphere, as I didn't eat there... maybe next time. We'll see!
