What a fun place! Since the previous place we went to was on last call, we came and spent the rest of the night here. I had heard from several friends that this was a great place to watch sports games and has a good crowd. While it was late when we came, there were still plenty of people. First off, this place is huge. I almost got lost for a second because it seemed like every turn I went I ended up in a new room. Like the last place, this has a whole section dedicated to darts and pool. There's ample space and TVs in the main part of the bar and throughout. Drink wise, I got my typical three olives grape and sprite and my friend got a beer. He loves this place for the food and the atmosphere. He got an order of wings, fries, and jalapeño Mac and cheese balls. While we were looking for a place to sit, he took me outside in their heated and covered outdoor area. Again, there was ample seating, but best of all, they have a pop-a-shot machine! He ate for a little bit and then we went to play. Friendly's is always a fun time and why it's been one of my favorite neighborhood spots! Drinks are cheap in general but they run a few specials for Sunday Funday. You can't find a better spot to catch a game, inside or out. The heated tent with TV's is a smokers paradise. With Justin in the kitchen there are rotating homemade specials, like fried chicken, and lasagna. Be warned (or advised if it's your thing) that Friday/Saturday late nights can sometimes be crazy. I've been here multiple times and never had a bad time. I'd consider this a dive bar, a real neighborhood bar. You need to know this place is cash only, they do not take cards; this helps make the prices cheaper. People are wearing masks and they do have a patio where you can smoke (it's covered in fall/winter too). I heard the food is good but I think it depends on what you order because I tried the chicken breast sandwich and I was very disappointed. I couldn't finish it and it seemed like it was overcooked. We went here to watch one of the World Series games. We had to wait for a table but the patrons are legitimately friendly and invited us to sit down at their 4 top table and there were only two of them instead of making us stand and we shared a bucket of beers. Nice guys. They left and we ordered dinner. I got the horseradish roast beef dip - however, I ordered it to come on the garlic cheesebread and it did not, I was bummed! Server was very nice. Sports games are on and lots and lots of TV's and game room-like area with ski ball and an outdoor seating area. Parking down in the residential area is remotely annoying and this place is a dive, but St. Louisan's love our dives. They are really important to us and hold a lot of meaning to our old St. Louis neighborhoods. People get the wrong impression about dives that there are just poor hoosiers in them drinking. Incorrect, STL has an eclectic dive variety and Friendly's is one of them, guys in suits, girls in heels, blue collar white collar. All of it. Cold beer on a Wednesday night! As a bar, I haven't been a huge fan of Friendly's. Usually, our group would hit it up after a game or Blackthorn run, and I can't say it's all that exciting as a hangout. They have all sorts of games and distractions, but it's just not my seen. Also, it didn't help that on my 29th birthday the door guy gave me a hard time for not having my ID. I had just been hired at my current job and took my driver's license out of my wallet to be xeroxed, forgetting to put it back in my wallet. We argued for several minutes, and after I showed him my voter registration card, he begrudgingly let me in with a warning. Yesterday I tried Friendly's food for the first time. My pops came through again with a sweet deal. For ten dollars, we got two chicken dinners with two side and a domestic beer each. It doesn't take much to get me out of the house for chicken and beer, even though Friendly's and I had a questionable past. Props to the waitress! She let us order a drink special with our gift certificate, allowing us the Wednesday night special of a ten dollar bucket of six beers instead of the single beer each. "We'll just charge you anything over $21," she said. Woo to the hoo! I thought that was very cool. The chicken was pretty good. I would compare it to Hodak's, just that clean, fresh taste with no big perks. The breading could have used a little kick, but the chicken itself was juicy and HOT! The sides were quite sizable. I am all for dive bars and local restaurants. I work a few blocks up. It is always so hard to find their menu!! Anyways. First time I ordered a pick up was July 2018. Ordered a grilled chicken wrap. No tomatoes. Picked up. walked back to the office and it was fried chicken with tomatoes. I was on a conference call so I wasn't able to go back and have it fixed. Today my coworker and I ordered a BLT with onion rings and a grilled chicken salad. We were told 20 minutes. So we walked down there. Still wasn't ready. It took 45 minutes. They bartender was super nice. She ended up taking one of the meals off because it was talking too long. However I still feel like we paid too much. My grilled chicken salad. The chicken was still pink; cold and not cooked all the way. My coworkers - onion rings were so fried that you wouldn't think there were onions in there. Not to mention cold. Not even like kinda warm. COLD! Her BLT had hardly any bacon on it. We were both starving. Now after 1:30 in the afternoon we are throwing the food away and thinking about calling Jimmy Johns for delivery. I thought maybe the first time was a fluke. It has everything you want from your neighborhood sports bar: tons of TVs, remarkably cheap drinks, food that goes beyond basic bar offerings (they have some great sandwiches, and St. Louis-style pizza), and all the bar games (skeeball, washers, Golden Tee, shufflepuck, etc). This place is the nuts. My buddy lives around the corner and I've had every kind of good time here. I've seen a girl from my grade school somehow playing roller derby here...in the bathroom. I've lit a bonfire in the back and some guy tried to shut it down cuz it was smoking up the joint and he burned his hand (he was all like, Owww!). I've been kicked out for going in the wrong restroom. Etc. Et al. But this isn't about my good times, this is about awesome: like, say, free (bleep)in popcorn? Ah-yeah! And a Skeeball-time machine (seriously, you remember that one time when you were 7? Well, you will), which I scored 880 (out of 900) and won the free doll they have but the dude was like, No, I saw you, you got on the platform and cheated, and I was like, Dude, that's how you play Skeeball...and got free beer. Hurray! And yeh, I guess I met a few girls here, though I don't remember what happened except something eventually went wrong. That's the mantra here, 'I don't remember,' like I believe there was 1.50 pints, dogs, nachos(?) till 10, and during Blues/Cards games, which was aces, but not sure? Anyway, its lovably ratty, looks like hell, and there is enough games to play Bar Olympics and have a hoot, then shoot a gun at an arcade. Yeh, and there's always some gents at the bar barring it up like mad, looking like they just got out of a union meeting and everyone's pissed cuz no one died and they're boozin-boozin, which is sweet. It's been awhile but I know I'll be back. Gotta give the place props though. So I'm not going to brag a whole lot about the quality of food or drink at this establishment, but if you're looking for a great place to talk, drink and maybe get in a game of backyard washers, you've found it. Couple of quick tips: During baseball games, the food gets uber cheap. Buckets: You know 'em, you love 'em, they're cheap here too. They don't try and do that thing that most chain restaurants do where they give you 5 beers and act like its a deal. Here you get six, pay for five, and the per beer price is cheap. Since they opened up the side seating area and the Wall O' TV's, its been a lot easier to get a seat, and a lot easier to meet a big group of people for sporting events without having to go chain restaurant. Not sure if the non smoking thing will ever hit this place, but just know that you're going to an old smoky bar, even if no one is smoking, you're going to come out smelling like cigarettes and cigars....which is like most places in old St. Louis. Everyone likes a neighborhood bar. Your "Cheers" bar. Your "Where do you wanna go?" "I dont' know - where do YOU wanna go?" And you wind up at the same old place because it feels like your home away from home...with more booze. And for many, Friendly's is just that. But not for me. My boyfriend and I went up there to meet some friends and it took about 15 minutes for us to get two drinks. We had waited so long that by that point, we deicded to order two sandwiches as well. And let me tell you - the bar was not full at this time. We got over to our table with our two drinks and my boyfriend took a sip of his - and about spit it back out. He ordered a vodka/cranberry. He got a cranberry/cranberry. It was gross. So I took it back to the bar, waited another 10 minutes, and asked her for a vodka/sprite with a splash of cran. She made it a point to tell me that she "didn't pour it weak." I told her that wasn't the issue, but there was so much cranberry in it that you just couldn't taste the vodka at all. She did not seem pleased. (Sidenote: As a person working in the service industry, you should never try to dispute what the customer is asking you about - especially not to their face. If you want to go in the back of the house and bitch about me to your heart's content, so be it. I don't give a shit how you pour drinks - I'm telling you this one tastes like crap so please remake it differently. End. Of. Story. And I can say this because I have worked at a restaurant and dealt with this every day. If I mouthed back to a customer, I would have been fired.) By the time I got back to the table, the food was there. However the bottom half of my grilled cheese was so soggy, it was inedible. Plus, it was literally a slice of the square, yellow cheese you buy at the grocery store with some bread around it. My 91-year old Grandma with one good eye (and I use the term "good" lightly) could have made a better sandwich than that. My boyfriend got a different sandwich which he said was fine, but instead of the fries (which he paid extra for), he got chips. Way to go, bartender and/or cooks. Ater eating only the top half of my pathetic sandwich, I went back up to get two more drinks. The bartender looked right at me, told me she would be right back, then dissappeared. FOR 20 MINUTES. Not kidding. I was the only one waiting for a drink when she left but by the time she came back, there were 5 other people waiting as well. When did I get served? Third. Really?! She not only bypassed me when she returned, but took the time to chat with a regular, get him a new beer, get another regular a drink refill, and attempt to take a new person's order until I said, "Excuse me? I need two drinks, please. I've been waiting since you left." I got my drinks, closed my tab, gave her a semi-decent tip, and vowed never to return. She may have been busier than what I could see, but come on - 20 minutes?! In a not-that-crowded bar? She's lucky I tipped her at all. All in all, it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in a bar. I'm sorry if you're the only bartender working and you also have to run food out or change a keg or whatever extra shit you have to do. I don't care. A simple apology would have made it all better. Friendly's is a neighborhood bar in the Tower Grove area that doesn't try to be something it's not. Cheap beer, cheap food, lots of games and a huge outdoor area are the highlights. Four of us had four buckets of beers and 8 burgers with fries and nachos... Anyway if all totaled only $60! A Saturday night out with beers and food (oh and free popcorn too!) for $15 each!!! Wow! During Cards, Rams and Blues game nights you can get burgers for $1.80! Anyway, it is sort of a dive but large enough to accommodate a ton of people inside and out. read more

I just can't give this one a better ranking. I've tried, based on advertisements and peer reviews, to give this place the benefit of the doubt, but it just doesn't add up to a great time. The place is in South City, and it actually has a lot of room to move around, more so than a lot of other bars in the city, even though they didn't have the crowd to fill the place. It three indoor rooms and an outdoor patio, which is nice. The problem is that none of it is particularly well kept. Bar games and sports banners aren't hiding the ruined carpets and water damaged ceilings. They do get plus marks for having ample TVs to catch game action. The drink specials are ok, particularly during a home team sporting event. It's cash only, which is a turn off for me. For food, I lean toward the frozen pizzas, and while good that isn't exactly a compliment. I just want more from this place. Maybe a rennovation and a revamped menu would do them some good. Until then, I'm probably looking for a different watering hole. read more

Not entirely friendly....... Had a Groupon for two chicken dinners and two drinks. Walked in on a Wednesday. The waitress walked right past us...even when I said "Excuse me". Finally an older woman, owner or regular I don't know, approached us and told us to have a seat anyway, whether in the bar, dining room, side room, or patio. We chose the dining room. It took a while for the waitress (same one that ignored me before) to acknowledge we were sitting and waiting. When she finally came over, I told her we had the groupon. My friend asked if they accepted credit cards, and she said the didn't. They do have an ATM onsite though. Anyway...she then disappeared. Ten minutes later she came back and asked if we had decided to stay?? I asked her if one of us told her we were leaving?? I'm not sure where that came from.... So she took our drink orders. They have a lot on tap, including some craft beers. This gave them an extra star for me. The menu is very informal. This is more of a bar than a restaurant is the impression I got. We ordered our chicken dinners (half a chicken and two sides each) and a sampler appetizer platter. Nothing fancy, a bunch of fried stuff. Typical bar type food. It took what seemed like a long time for the appetizer to come out...and then they chicken came very shortly after. Seems it should not have taken that long for the appetizer, which was served in a paper tray, to come out. But whatever, my friend and I were enjoying our drinks and people watching. (Always great people watch in South City. I'm pretty sure the people at the next table we cultivating an affair of some sort as she had a ring on her hand, and he did not. And the body language was more intimate than you would see with most married couples. Plus she later traded tongue kisses with someone else in this party of four. But...I digress back to my review.) The chicken dinner....is huge. I will say, it was delicious. I had the slaw and the onion rings as my sides. Nothing amazing here. Onion rings were good, served in a paper tray. The slaw was served in a small bowl like those we were served in elementary school. The chicken was on a separate plate and consisted of a leg, wing, breast, and thigh. The chicken was cooked and juicy and the breading was crispy. We both took home chicken leftovers. Again, I'll say...this place has the atmosphere of a bar. The dining room we sat in had several tvs with multiple sporting events going on. Several video games, dart boards, a shuffle board table, etc. There was some sort of game similar to the drinking game quarters going on...so our dining experience was loud. There were not many table in the room and most were set for four people and shoved together. Maybe the other room would have been better suited for dining. Evidently there is a patio, although I didn't see it. Overall...while the chicken was good....the service was questionable at best. Maybe I would stop in for a drink, as it is in my neighborhood. But with the bars on Morganford and Black Thorn so close...and my experiences in all those being so much more positive....I doubt it. I'm giving this an overall score of....eh.... read more

I have made some recent big purchases so was in need of a cheap night out. I've been hearing about Friendly's 'home team specials' on the radio for a while now and figured I'd take my few remaining dollars and check it out. We sat down with 5 minutes left in the Blues game and they were still honoring the special. $1.50 brats, hot dogs, nachos, and burgers. We tried one of each. Nothing special... but they were cheap, hot, and came out fast. The burger and brat were a little bland. The hot dog was better. Nachos were ballpark variety with extra cheese. We also tried an order of the rye bread pizza appetizer. Again, nothing that you haven't had 100 times before at a cookout... but they hit the spot for that night. The place is busy. In fact, that was one of the drawbacks. But you can't blame the place for popularity. We kept getting bumped into by a neighboring table that grew from 4 to 14 over the span of the night. Also, the place was very smoky... man I can't wait for the January smoking ban... This non-smoker hates to have to dry clean jackets every couple of months once they reek of smoke. I tried my hand at Golden Tee... and they have many other bar games... Power Putt, Big Buck Hunter, Bowling, darts, Mrs Pac Man to name a few. Service was great. I wish I had grabbed her name to post about her specifically. Our server was working the game room on Saturday night 11/13. Besides the fact that their food is terrible and the surrounding neighborhood makes me a bit uncomfortable when walking to and from my car, Friendly's is alright for a dive bar. Friendly's sponsors my friends' and boyfriend's Ultimate Frisbee league and they always offer great food and drink specials to sports teams. They always have bucket and draft specials, and hanging out on their big covered patio is where you will always find our group. The inside is pretty nasty and has had a funky smell more than a few times so I recommend sitting outside. On the patio they have TVs, a foosball table, a basketball arcade game, and more. Also, they offer free serve yourself popcorn which is always a hit. Like I mentioned above, their food is pretty bad. If you're going to order something, the burgers, TJ's pizzas, and salads are your safest choices. Definitely don't order the hot dog, it is GROSS! If Friendly's didn't sponsor the Ultimate Frisbee league I would probably never come here again. But for a few cheap post game beers and bar games, Friendly's will do. read more

It smells bad in this place but has games to keep people coming here. Many games are in the smoking outside/tent area, which actually smells better than the inside. I don't think I'd ever eat here because of the smell. It was leaking in the women's bathroom but there was bucket full of brown water and toilet paper to catch it. I got extremely intoxicated (blackout drunk) and played bags in their fenced in back yard. The issues are - it's a dive bar, in a pretty bad location. It's not like it's in the CWE or on Wash Ave, and there are a plethora of other bars within walking distance. Once you commit to Friendly's, you're going to be there for a couple hours at least. If you are a guy, there won't be a lot of good looking women, and vice versa for you girls out there. Would I go here again? Yes. But only on the premise that I was going to get very intoxicated (and thus didn't have to drive) and to annoy the regulars of this dump. read more

Friendly's is a pretty large dive-ish bar with lots of TVs for sports and a big backyard full of yard games like bags and washers. They have skee ball, free popcorn, and that punching bag game. They also have two pool tables, but one of them is a little uncomfortable to play on if seating is full (you end up bumping up to people). The drinks are cheap and strong, and they must have a late happy hour because our drinks always go down in price after our first round. Friendly's is a great neighborhood bar that attracts all kinds of people. It's hard to predict what kind of crowd will show up, which is one of the reasons we're not there more often. As I understand it, Happy Hours end before the bar closes. Not this place, on Friday nights, this place offers half off beers. All night long.Their selection is pretty poor, but for half off? Nice. The pours get mighty heavy whenever you get your drink; there's only one bartender on the night I was in. She was kind and called me 'honey' many times. It got hot inside so we moved outside. The tables were long but wet. It took about five minutes for the overworked busboy to give us towels to wipe the rain away. In Chicago, we have bags. In St Louis, washers. Or Wershers. Wershers were here. Then this odd contraption of getting balls on some rungs that look like a clothes dryer. Whatever. But what geekily made me happy was that instead of lame grass or even lamer concrete, they have nice sandstone rocks. Downsides:they close at 1:30 supposedly, they moved the time early to 1 when I was there; the tables were super close to the cockbags playing wershers, so our evening was dictated on their fading accuracy; cash only. With all that said, go back on Friday's. Stag's a buck and a half, but so is the GIN and tonic. read more

Friendly's is your classic dive bar. I've been here on a couple of occasions to watch football games with a college friend. We like Friendly's because sometimes we just want the atmosphere of a dive bar and it reminds us of some college bars at our alma mater. On my most recent visit to Friendly's, we had requested the bartender to change one of the TV channels to our game, which she promptly did! There was also a hockey game and a big NFL game going on at the same time...but there's TV's everywhere, so everyone can find a spot to watch their game of preference. Every time I've been here, the owner of the bar sits in a rolling office chair at a round poker table near the corner of the main bar area. And he usually has several of his closest buddies with him where they just relax and hangout out at the round table the whole night. That's not exactly my idea of a fun tradition, but it does give the bar a nice atmosphere and they seem to have a good time. Anyways, midway thru my game, some crazy stranger walks into the bar and tries to change the TV that my game is on! The owner and all his buddies promptly stands up for us and don't allow they guy to change the channel. So I really appreciated that and it's nice to know I can always come here and be able to watch my game from start to finish. The food is your typical bar food but they do run a special that certain sections of the menu are SUPER CHEAP (like $2 for a burger) whenever a home team plays (Rams, Cardinals, Blues). There's several sections to Friendly's but I haven't really explored all of them. As stated before, there's a main bar area with a ton of TV's. There's also an outdoor patio with a "bags" game and video game/pinball machine area. Friendly's is a great place to go if you just want to have a chill/casual night or watch your favorite team play. Friendly's is my salvation for going out on a budget. Every night between 10:30 and 1:30, well drinks are only two dollars. While the well liquors are the lowest of low quality (we're talking Barton's, here), one can become thoroughly goofy for the evening on just ten bucks. A wonderfully eclectic mixture of folks can be found at Friendly's, everyone from hipsters with asymmetric haircuts to old men sporting Nascar tees. At it's core, however, Friendly's is a sports bar-- the reason it does not receive five full stars from me. If you cannot see a swarm of overly inebriated jocks, you can without a doubt hear series of grunts and an occasional "DUUUUUUUDE!" from the other room. Kills my buzz just a bit.
