On the plus side, items are generally well stocked and well organized, which probably has most people coming in here. It certainly not customer service... The vibe is with employees that whoever walks through the door is the opposition. Nothing unusual about having 12 or more people in a single line and only one cashier, implying that they couldn't care less how long you have to wait to get out of there. Meanwhile, generally 20 to 25 people on the entire floor many standing around in clusters gossiping. Definitely not a favorite business in Ukiah pay around 1/4 more than you would at Home Depot. read more

This picture is of what I call a painters knife. Other people I know call it a "snap off knife," a "retractable knife," or a "cheap little plastic knife thingy"' They are well nigh ubiquitous, you can get them at Home Depot, Kelly Moore Paints, Mendo Mill and most likely any store that sells paint or hardware. They used to be well under a dollar each. Prices have increased, I got this one at Kelly More for just over a dollar. You can get a 3 pack for about 3 bucks on Amazon. You can't get one at Friedman Brothers in Ukiah. I couldn't even find anyone there who knew what I was talking about. They just wanted to sell me a bigger, fancier all metal version for well over $5.00. I couldn't help getting a little testy at their lack of product knowledge, all that got me was a bigger attitude back at me. This was far from the first time that I've gone their with a shopping list and had to go to another store because there was something on my list that they didn't carry or were out of. For a very long time now it has felt like they've lost touch with their slogan. It's all to often that I need something and they don't have it. I'm not sure that Friedman Brothers understands that if I have to go to Mendo Mill/Home Depot/Tractor Supply or Kelly Moore to get part of what I need I might as well skip their store and just shop where I can get everything in one stop. I'm not sure they understand that when you are getting beaten hands down by Home Depot for inventory, product knowledge and overall customer service you have a problem. If you have ANY other choice in Ukiah, don't choose Friedman Brothers! We ordered over $1k no-climb fencing & paid for delivery. The manager called & scheduled delivery for Wednesday NO LATER that 11.. I explained that we would have worker's waiting for the fencing. He said " I will do my best to have the materials to you by 10am, no later than 11! At 10:15 I called & was told I'll get the delivery manager and have him call you. No return call, so i called again this time was told the delivery manager was in a meeting... Finally at 11:45 i got a call from sales rep. saying, "the delivery would be there ANY minute. 1 hour later the delivery driver showed up... Poor guy, when i asked him what happened he said 1 of their trucks were not working. All I needed was 1 phone call from Friedman Brothers delivery manager, letting me know they couldn't be here on time. I could have adjusted my schedule...Btw, i never did get that call back from the manager of deliveries! I cannot do business with Companies that dont come through with promises- worse yet they dont keep you in the loop when things go array... read more

Over the last couple of months, not knowing a whole lot about renovations, we've come across a few people who have assisted us where in most cases Today my fiancé and I went in to get a custom quote/design for a kitchen island. Over the last few months in getting assistance in the scope of home renovations, we have dealt with a handful of people at other home improvement stores, who gave us a negative experience rather than a helpful one. I went to the Ukiah store to purchase a new hose yesterday, mind you- I could have gone to Home Depot, Tractor Supply or Ace but chose Friedman's because they are a local small business. (Relatively!) After the cashier had taken my money she told me that I was not welcome to shop in their store until I wore a mask. I responded that I have a documented medical exemption and she ROLLED her eyes. And the damn hose was made in China. ‍DONE! read more

If you walk into this business they automatically accuse you of stealing. My bf and I walked in looking for some hinges/screws for our RV door that broke. Took us a few minutes of browsing to find the right isle, and look through the drawers to see if anything was what we needed or could use. We then heard a man on his radio talking about us and that he needed someone to come find us because he accused us of stealing. We couldn't find what we needed and immediately became infuriated and uncomfortable. We walked down the isle to leave to which a worker was walking towards us with this smug look of disgust, then proceeded to follow us, almost running into me. Didn't say a word but gave me a god awful look. I have never been to a business where browsing/looking for what you needed was automatically met with you're stealing. Not once did anyone ask if we needed assistance finding anything, or if they could help in any manner. This store and their employees are a complete joke!! Do better. This has to be one of the best stores, of any kind, in Ukiah. It is really tops in service and product display & offering. It's a bit of a drive-- clear across town for us, all of 10 minutes! Great parking, access to either the main store, the nursery and the lumber yard. We've been needing to get 3-4 bags[ 40 lb each] of wood pellets a week for our pellet stove, and we saw the flyer with the best prices here. Walmart used to have the best, but last week said they are out of season now & they are not stocking them [what, with 24 degree nights !!} So I got help loading up with pellets; then thought a Valentine's gift for John from here might be a good thing & remembered we had wanted a fun outdoor thermometer to put on the fence so we can see it from inside. Found just what I needed. I was so tempted to buy some bulbs & houseplants, but denied myself... I'll wait on that. It is true that the prices are higher here, and you can get similar products at Home Depot, Walmart & Ace. But their nursery is the best in town-- fresh, attractive, seasonal. We haven't had the need for lumber since we are renting, but one day will give it some business. This store delivers goodwill & service-- with a multitude of green shirted help around, asking if you need anything. Plus they have a Schatt's bakery branch by the exit door. What more could you want, especially on a rainy cold day. read more

Friedmans supplied almost all of the materials I used when constructing our house. They provided good prices, fantastic service. and quality products. Our relationship with Friedman's started when Ric Rizo, the outside contractor sales person, left his card and some job order books when we were just camping in a trailer on our property back in 2009. I called Ric and he set us up with an account and became our "go to" person for ordering materials during construction. His counterpart, Jason Beam, at the contractor desk searched and found some products that we are extremely happy with - like the triple glazed glass entry door and that beautiful oak double inner door. The drivers who deliver materials to the job site are professional - call when they are on their way, deliver on time and are always friendly and helpful. We highly recommend Friedmans and their wonderful associates. read more

We shop here all the time. Our account just passed 5 figures this season. It's our go to shop for anything generic. But I'm taking this time to write this review so I can give proper props to a certain employee: Randall. He is incredibly helpful. I'm not unconvinced that he doesn't know everything about every tool ever. He's honest, so he's able to make sure I spend my money correctly. Every power tool he's suggested works exactly as intended and promised. I've made about 6 major power tool purchases, from sanders to circular saws to impact guns to pnumatics nailers to our most recent miter box saw purchase; this guy knows his tools. I use Friedman's when I need a immediate fix on my ranch. Randall makes it more enjoyable to do so. read more

My husband is a contractor who does small projects and this is his go to. He likes the contractor sales people and even the people who help load his trailer. I highly recommend any home owner doing a project to create an account and get the discount. You can still pay cash and they will band your order together and have it ready. Luckily I received a really nice call from the general mgr about an issue my husband had with one consistently difficult asst mgr. The asst mgr said my husband had a counterfeit bill. Though he asked for a receipt for the confiscated bill, she would not give him one. She would not use the pen on another bill so he could compare the mark. He finally asked her to call the police so he could get a case number and we could report it on our taxes as a loss. My husband often gets paid in cash and once a year we get a weird bill. Ideally you take it to your bank where they can send it in and credit your account if it's real. Most people are too scared or uninformed to know what to do. Law says that a store needs to hold the bill and give it to the police. However they don't always know if it's really is fake, they just know their counters don't like the bill, and the only way to tell is for them to send it in. Once we had one 10 dollar bill that the machines said was fake. Who fakes a 10? Anywho, I was offered a receipt for the bill and they said they would inform cashiers on how to better handle this issue. I know we are a rare case to ask for a receipt and most people just want the bill to go away. I respect that they are trying to be helpful. read more

I went to this store yesterday just to get some more grass seed and some pea seeds. I was helped by a very nice man with the grass seed and fertilizer. I have gotten more than adequate help every time I go to this store, and very nice personable people. Then, I was very happy to see a jam packed large seed rack with everything I needed for seeds for my first fall garden. I am kind of done with catalog seed buying because I can see that it is so much more economical to buy local rather than out of catalogs. Friedman's has a very nice selection of fresh for 2019 seeds for anything that can be grown in the fall. I have always enjoyed shopping at Friedman's stores, UNTIL TODAY. I am doing major inside work inside a home in the Nice, CA. area. I have a varied list of materials that I need, and need to work up a price list that I could submit to my employer for approval. I got on the Friedman's web site, only to find that I could not get any prices or even check on any materials. I called the listed Friedman's number for prices and they switched me from department to department, depending on type of material I needed. Of course not all departments answered the phone, so I finally gave up!!! I then got on the Home Depot web site where I was able to compile a complete materials and price list. I have now found a favorite hardware store. Friedman's needs to get with the times and improve their site, as of right now it is only good for getting phone numbers........... read more

I come from ukiah ,have an account because I'm a builder and have purchased materials there for 15 years because its the lesser of two evils Prices are competative however the staff is much to be desired. The staff inside are ok at best but the staff in the yard are the most obnoxious ,know it all, lazy,rude individuals I've ever dealt with at a lumber yard and thats pretty bad,I've dealt with a lot of lumber yards worldwide. You are treated like your lucky to be shopping there. over the years I've been treated unprofessionally and unfairly by these people on numerous occasions to the point where I get a knot in my stomach when I want to go there for something and find myself paying higher prices at home depot just to avoid them and drama. If you complain to management about this type of behavior they will almost always side with there rude employees believing any made up B.S. they recount about the incident to save their jobs. The truth about this store is that there are four or five staff that are very competent and helpful, and the rest clueless or useless. Leonardo is amazing and is the top reason for the four stars. Whenever I get the right answers it is almost always from him. The guys in the yard are always helpful and go out of their way to get the job done, even in the pouring rain. The paint department acts like they are doing you a favor for answering a question, and are more than happy to tell you they can't; and direct you to another store so that they don't have to get up and actually work. I don't bother trying to match paint anymore because I am tiered of being directed to Home Depot by eye rolling obnoxious staff. There is a lady who seems to avoid customers and acts like she is organizing cans while talking on a cellphone. When I brought this up to managers they apologize, they seem timid about addressing her, and her attitude has never changed and is another reason why I won't buy paint. When Ed is around you can get really good information about the tools and limited machinery, but they have a lot of very ignorant young staff put the saws together in very unsafe ways (I would never buy a pre-assembled saw from them, chop saws should never lock down because of the blade guard getting stuck. One was installed backwards, and when this was pointed out to the guy who put it together he laughed about it. I was there a week ago and it was still messed up)! Even though it's a very mixed bag, if you get the right person the store is great. read more
