The name of this salon has changed recently so most people will know it by it's previous name (Charm). The same great stylists are here - Kelly and Sarah and am so thankful Kelly is still there! I've personally been going to Kelly for about 3 years now after finding some great reviews on Yelp. I am always really happy with her work and she is just hands down a nice and genuine person. My hair is thick and can be a challenge to manage but she always cuts it in a way that not only does it look great and is easy (and quick) to style for work each morning, but as it starts to grow out, it grows out really nicely so I don't have to have it cut constantly to maintain it - which means I end up getting my hair cut only a few times a year.... though I know I really should have it cut more often than that. I admit, I'm lazy... Aside from the great work she does, I appreciate the fact that the atmosphere is comfortable and friendly and I thoroughly enjoy chatting away and catching up with Kelly every time I see her. I needed a haircut after being unable to due to covid. I found Sarah online and she had incredible reviews so I booked an appointment. The appointment was rescheduled due to new rules with covid which was completely fine. She takes your temperature when you arrive (mine was super high since it was 100 degrees outside & I had to walk a bit to her salon so thankfully she let me cool down before turning me away). She was nice and listened to what I wanted in a haircut but spent most of the time telling me how damaged my hair was from hard city water. While I appreciated the advice, that was all she would talk to me about and my hair is not a rats nest or anything and she made me feel insecure after a while. Salons should be a place you walk out of feeling good, at least that is what I think! I just felt for a new client, she could have done a better job for repeat business. She clearly has a client base since it was hard to get an appointment anyway but I won't be returning. Mary is my favorite hair dresser. I love coming to her and have been for last three years. Mary Is great with her skills, including customer service and she makes the time fly by no matter how long it takes and since I have long hair for a color to show it takes bout hour and half but with her skills it feels like nothing. I wrote some long paragraph about how the salons I've been going to in the burbs, where I now live, have been thinning my hair out too much when giving me layers and now the ends feel like hay and the cut doesn't look right and that I'm a wash and go girl that maybe blow dries her hair 5 times a year - so yes, low maintenance but obviously desires a cut that looks good without doing anything and I don't like layers in my face. Sarah assessed my hair, patiently sat through the video I found on IG that showed I wanted a "blunt longer layers without thinning it out" because I'm getting OLDER and my hair is already thinning, I don't need more thinning. I'm so glad I found this place! Freyja (previously Charm) is located on Damen just north of Lawrence. I got tired of driving to my stylist of TEN YEARS out in the burbs and after trying several places I came here and found Kelly. She is great!! Very sweet and very professional and she always does a fabulous job on my cut and color. My husband goes to her now as well and is also very happy with how she cuts his hair. I never really know what I want and Kelly is able to take my vague, "I don't really know...." comments and give me exactly what I want. LOVE her. I am lucky enough to live just down the street from Freyja but it is also conveniently located near lost of public transit such as the Damen bus, Lawrence bus, Foster bus, and brown line. Be careful when booking online. I booked my appointment thru their website 9 days before the appointment. Although it is a simple process to book an appointment, and the system verified I had completed scheduling my appointment, there was a "glitch" and my appointment was not booked. It was 4:30 in the evening on my anniversary and I told the salon that. Their answer was sorry, but we are booked. My husband was taking me to a nice restaurant for the evening...well you get the picture. Understandable from a business perspective, but I won't be back to this salon as this whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth. Three stars because I wasn't able to rate their salon services one way or the other. read more

I'm still getting compliments on my hair, two months after the cut! In addition to getting a great cut, the entire experience was delightful. She also cut my 5-year-old's hair, and did a great job. My daughter normally takes a while to warm up to strangers, but Sarah is so friendly and warm and good with kids, the child hair cut was all fun, no drama. Had to give it a one star because of yelp- in all fairness the actual building is cute and in a good location. That's about it. Firstly let me say that I talked to another stylist on the phone prior to my appointment- It was a nice lady who assured me that it wouldn't be too expensive to get my hair dyed. I have board straight, long, FORMERLY- nice looking reddish brownish hair. She said it would be about $60.00 for a full hair dye. Awesome. I go to the salon and Sarah is my colorist. It takes 25 minutes to decide what color she is going to mix. I brought her specific pictures of brownish color and specifically told her what I wanted multiple times- she shows me tons of pictures of synthetic hair colors and asks me to pick. I specifically wanted light brown hair and conveyed that to her multiple times. My hair is board straight so I did not want highlights at all- they always look streaky and horrible because I literally have board straight hair. She says that I have to pull my old hair through and not dye several strands of it so it will be "dimensional". OK, fine. Great. I just wanted my hair light brown and she said she could do it. She dyes most of my hair almost black with my former light reddish brownish hair in streaks outside of the dyed regions. She dries it and at this point its been about 1.5 hours and I tell her it looks streaky. She is like OK no worries "I knew you'd think that" and proceeds to dye my whole hair even darker. If i wasn't so ashamed I would post them on here. The bottom half of my hair was almost grey-black and the top half was light brown with caramel streaks from her putting some kind of toner on my former hair color. She said my LIGHT BROWN/BLONDE eyebrows did not need dying. I looked bizarre?? She cut my hair oddly and in a straight flat line- basically at this point I just wanting to GTFO of there. I was not happy. ***Throughout the whole time of me sitting there we are talking- I tell her im excited to find a cheaper place because I USED TO PAY 300 DOLLARS for hair color and I am poor and my mom has cancer so I travel back and forth by plane constantly & Im in school so I can't afford much these days. She says it definitely wont be that expensive and that is "CRAZY" that I used to pay that much. my roots were 3 inches and I just needed a color to go back to natural so I don't have to pay for anything anymore!! 4 hours later I finally get out of there to the final touch: she says it will be 250 dollars. Clearly, she thought since I used to pay 300 dollars that I have no problem paying 250 to her. She scammed me, purposefully put tons of products on my hair and went against my wishes for a light brown hair color. She gave me an awful rushed haircut because she had a customer coming in after me and took too long with me. It still hasn't faded from the awful grayish, brown streaky black color and its 1 month later. I am out 250 dollars that I will never get back for the worst haircut and dye job and I will never recommend this place or go back again. read more

Initially, I went in for a haircut to correct a horrendous cut from another salon. The cut came out okay so I scheduled a dye job for the following month. I asked for red streaks but they instead decided to put in red highlights. Whatever dye they used, it washed off for close to a month. Whenever I lay head on my pillow, whenever I washed my hair, pillow cases would stain and the water from my wash would be bright pink for all the dye coming off. I have no idea the quality of their services because it was nearly impossible to schedule an appointment. So, because the reviews were good, I waited almost a month and set appointments for a cut and color. Unfortunately, their online system changed appointment dates without notice; so I waited even longer to get my appointments. When their system changed my appointments I called an left messages and no one ever had the courtesy to return my calls. Then, at 9:27pm the night before my haircut appointment, I received a text cancelling my appointment. At first, I was understanding and asked if my color appointment set for the following day would be maintained and I was told they had no record of that appointment. I made that appointment "in person" weeks in advance during their required "color consultation" appointment. Then, without understanding or respect, the text that was sent "wished me well". At a time when people have lost their jobs, businesses that provide a luxury service should act in a more honorable manner. I would cut my own hair before ever considering making an appointment with this salon. read more

I had a short haircut by Sarah over a month ago and 1)I'm still loving it! and 2)it is so easy to style. Typically i don't like to overly primp my hair or mess with it for more than a few minutes each morning. This haircut is completely what I have been wanting for years and never seemed to get. This place gets no less than five stars from me. I've been seeing Kelly for my hair for awhile now, and I always walk out happy. She is very personable, and I've enjoyed chatting with her more than any other hair stylist I've been to, actually. She's very kind, and her niceness is only supplemental to the fact that she is extraordinarily good at cutting and styling hair. She knows exactly what she's doing, and she's good at explaining the reasons for her recommendations when asked; for example, why she thinks it's good to cut the top layer to a certain length. I just tend to ask questions about the process because I'm naturally curious, and she takes it very nicely and openly. She's not pushy with anything, she listens very well, and she executes her craft very well. I've had haircuts from other hair stylists all around Chicago that I've just been "bleh" and completely unimpressed by, and at least one haircut that I was slightly unhappy with. So, I kinda drifted from stylist to stylist for years before I found this one. I've always been very, very happy with my haircuts from Kelly from the beginning, and as a result, I trust Kelly with my hair. For reference, my hair is slightly wavy fine Asian hair, and I do have a lot of this hair. Sarah seems nice, too, though I haven't talked to her much and I haven't gotten anything done by her. But with these two working here, it's a very kind and easy-going atmosphere. I live a few blocks from Freyja and stumbled upon its former business named, Charmed, very randomly. It was the best random choice I EVER made!!!!! I had read a review about hair stylist Kelly Dorl on a former YELP review and the raves were so convincing, I decided to make an appointment. Kelly Dorl is, by far, the best stylist whom I have ever really trusted to cut my hair. And by that, I mean, I never before gave a stylist free artistic aim at my hair. (I am one of those with long curly/wavy hair who always used to keep it long, just going in for a trim here and there). Kelly struck me with so much trustworthiness the very first time I met her, that I let her cut about 10 inches off my hair and give me BANGS!! My hair was chin length when I walked out, and I felt like a New Woman. Honest to Goodness. My hair grew out of that amazing cut so beautifully, that I wore that cut as it grew out for a whole year!!!! And still would get compliments on my hair a year later like I had just had it cut. Kelly has cut and styled my hair several times since that first cut. I go sometimes just to have her blow dry and curl it for me for special events, etc. I am taking the time to write this review for her and Freyja because I have never found someone who is so kind and trustworthy and funny and intelligent and CUTS SOME ROCKIN' HAIR as I have like Kelly Dorl.
